you’re lucky enough to live in this beautiful corner of New York State, truer words were never said. Walking around our villages, one can see an explosion of work and activities associated with the season. Everything is just coming into its “summer mode” – beautiful flowers, clean streets and squeaky-clean storefronts abound – all designed to enhance our lovely ambience. Homeowners also need to get cracking - mowing the grass, sweeping the porch, and tending As my farmer friend always the garden are just a few of the says: “You gotta make hay routine things that need attention. when the sun shines”! But after the sun goes down, take some time for a nice barbeque, open a bottle of your favorite spirit, and get some rest for tomorrow. You’re going to need it! your boats or your docks, look at your habits and make sure you aren’t inviting them. I found these prevention tips on WebMD: The best way to control pests is to make your home unappealing to them. Pests need water, food, and shelter to survive. If they don’t find these, they will likely leave. So, pick up all food spills and crumbs right away. Keep your counters, tables, sinks, and floors clean. Clean under large kitchen appliances - food debris can often collect in these spaces and attract pests. Store food in containers with airtight lids or in the refrigerator. Keep your trash in a container with a tight lid, and take out the trash often.

Place outdoor trash bins as far from your house as possible. Fix household leaks and clean up any excess moisture on counters or sinks right away. Cockroaches like water and can swim. Don’t leave pet food out overnight. Fix any screens that have holes to prevent pests from entering. Check for any openings or cracks where pests may enter your house, such as behind sinks, along baseboards, and around windows. Seal them. If carpenter ants are a problem, look for damaged or wet wood and replace it. Vacuum carpets and cracks and crevices regularly. Check the foundation of your home for openings larger than onequarter of an inch and seal them. If you’ve already tried prevention techniques and you still have a pest problem, you may need to use pesticide to treat the area. But first, be sure that you know what kind of pest you’re trying to eliminate. Your local extension service or an exterminator may be able to help you with identification. The next step is to choose a pesticide that will work against See “PESTS” Page 9

Dunkirk. “I like how diverse this area is. In my experience the North and South County are so different, in a good way.” There’s a spirit of generosity, “everyone wants to help.” While working to help reestablish Food Pantry and Emergency Services at the Salvation Army of Dunkirk she met Woman of Achievement winner Diana Butcher. “I could see how incredibly passionate she is,” Carlson says. But it was when she began volunteering with the Fredonia Farmers Market that Carlson found her own passion-creating sustainable food environments. “Chautauqua County has the most farms in New York State. Farmers are the most important people we need to support in our community. My hope is that this community support of local food continues to grow.” She looks to farmers markets in other communities for inspiration. “Rochester has a really fantastic market that caters to everyone,” she says. “They have programs and vendors for every person no matter what their economic status.” Healthy foods should not be limited to those of financial means, she believes. She points to issues of food insecurity. Homelessness is much larger than people think, she says. There are so many needs. “I don’t think anything exists in a vacuum. Networking is the

biggest asset I’ve found. Seeing what can be done together.” Even with the needs of the homeless, the elderly, “I think our community is working forward.” Her passion for food extends to cooking. She cannot pick a favorite local food. “I like pretty much everything. Any fresh veggies. You can do so much with them.” The key is not being afraid to experiment or taste new things. Jamestown has very talented chefs, she says, lauding the caliber of restaurants, bakeries, breweries, filled with passionate people. And yes, she said “I’m very passionate about my home town.” Some farmers markets have produced cookbooks featuring local produce with great success, she says. “If we get to that point I hope it’s something the community would support.” Prior to her current position she also worked for the Chautauqua County Health Network, Absolut Care of Westfield, and the James Prendergast Library. In the years ahead she anticipates access to healthy local foods will continue to be a central part of her life. She lives with her partner Ben, and their four cats Fefe, Kiki, Monty and Bo. What people might not know about her-“I’m a huge nerd. I love to read. Anything creative. Comic books, sci-fi.”

Cont. From Cover protective pop-up tent at Art in the Wilds in Kane, PA during a weekend in June, is colorful and eye-catching. Hillsides, flowers, and green meadowsher art may bring to mind a special place in the eye of the viewer. The places depicted reflect beauty and peace. Susan let her breakfast sit and get cold that morning in June as people passed by her space. She engaged them in conversation with a smile on her face and light in her eyes. For Susan, her art is “a lot more than just making pictures.” She wants to make connections with people; she wants to engage in conversations with people. She is successful in her art and in making those connections having sold 75% of her pieces in two days. Susan has a Master’s Degree in counseling and was an elementary school counselor for 11 years. She currently serves in the Employee Assistance Program at

Fredonia State University of New York. In that role, she assists employees with personal and work related problems that may impact mental health. An artist at heart, Susan received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University-her medium at the time was clay. She is well versed in acrylic painting. She discovered the wool medium through a friend, Julie. Susan explained that she enjoys clay and wool felting because her “hands are in it as opposed to a technical thing that comes out of the end of your paint brush.” Wool felting starts with roving, which are bundles of fibers, in this case wool, that are produced during the process of making yarn. It is a labor-intensive art form involving the wool, bubble wrap, soap, and water. Rolling and dipping describe the process before hanging the felt to dry. The outcome is always a bit of a surprise even though the dyed wool fibers are laid in a certain sequence. Beads and stitching can finesse the outcome. When asked where her inspiration comes from, her

husband Jeff Murphy piped up it’s “what she does in church.” Asked to explain, Susan described that at the Fredonia U.M. Church there is an “amazing organist”. During a reflective interlude before the church service begins, Susan finds herself sketching ideas on a church program. She describes the process with a reference to the paper napkins that hold lyrics to songs that are displayed at the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame. She revels in her inspiration. A quote on her business card seems to confirm it: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” To take her art to the next level, she would like to refine her sketches and clarify the wet wool felt design on paper making those sketches available to her customers as well. Most recently, Susan displayed her work at A Stir of Artists held at the park in Bemus Point. She will return to the same venue on Saturday August 10 and Sunday August 11, 2019 from 11am to 6pm both days. Visit her booth to experience her sense of joy. For you can experience all of this and more by attending the Great American Picnic on the simply sublime grounds of Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, NY. This winsome gathering, formerly known as the County Fair, was held in the 1920’s and 30’s. After a rather lengthy gap it was brought back to glory in 1992 and dubbed the Great American Picnic. Held on the 2nd Sunday each July and hosted by the Alumni Association of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle (CLSC) this annual fundraising event allows for monetary support of Alumni Hall as well as the various activities and events of the CLSC. Reading together since 1878, the CLSC has remained a leader in lifelong learning through the reading and discussion of literature. Each week of the Chautauqua Institution summer season features at least one author

presentation and book signing, as well as community conversation programs. According to the Alumni Association Executive Secretary, Cate Whitcomb, the CLSC members decide where the monies they raise will be spent. For instance there are 150 years of graduate class banners that require archival storage. “It’s really a social history of the United States from 1878 on”, said Whitcomb when we spoke. This is just one area of importance where the funds raised by the event may go. In it’s 27th year the Great American Picnic is a day full of family fun. Held at Alumni Hall on the corner of South and Whythe Streets the air will be filled with “picnic-flavored” music provided by a live band to set the stage for your experience. Enjoy summer time fun foods like hot dogs, burgers (veggie too), beans, potato salad and all your favorite picnic fixin’s by purchasing tickets on location. There will be games for the kids and second hand books to buy. Personally donated items have been accepted by the Alumni Association to assemble a silent auction sure to delight.
