Where we grow up and what we love first, often influences our entire lives. That’s the case with young biologist Jonathan Townsend, who grew up in the rolling hills and forested slopes of the Allegany Mountains outside Olean, New York. There, he developed a love for wilderness and a respect for Nature that has become a driving force in his life. “This upbringing spurred a lifelong passion and interest in biology and conservation, specifically bats,” he says. Educated at SUNY Fredonia where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science (2005) and a Master of Science in Biology (2014), Townsend will begin studying for his doctorate at the University of Buffalo’s Geography Department this fall. They would hit the Catskills and make a wide circle to include Binghamton, Jamestown, and Syracuse before returning to New York. Publisher’s Word “Prime Time”

Happy Birthday, America! And a warm, Fourth of July welcome to all our friends, locals and visitors alike. You could just feel the excitement building as the villages prepared this past week for a week of red, white and blue festivities and unbelievable sensory delights. Food, music, arts and crafts, parades, fireworks – you name it, we got it! It all seems so appropriate to me, as we are celebrating “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” – this is what our nation is all about, isn’t it?

Although the majority of Americans (with a sprinkling of our northerly cousins!) associate July 4th with the independence of the United States from Great Britain, for many it also represents quality time with loved ones, cookouts, summer sports and vacations. While the food sizzles on the grill, take a moment to appreciate all things good in your life. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – there’s no better place to be than right here, right now! Until next week… JZ

New Exciting Partnership Begins Jamestown Public Market & CHQ. Connections Children’s Coalition

Jamestown Public Market The Jamestown Public Market continues on Cherry Street in Downtown Jamestown, with some exciting new programs and events for the month of July. The market will once again participate in the Double Up Food Bucks program, in partnership with the Field and Fork Network. The program is slated to begin July 6 during traditional public market hours. Double Up Food Bucks is a SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food-stamps) incentive that matches federal food assistance benefits $1 for $1 to increase affordability and access to fresh healthy foods for low-income consumers. The program also helps direct dollars to farmers who sell at farmers markets and to other food retail, ultimately strengthening our local food and agriculture economy. Double Up is a program of Field & Fork Network, a food and farming nonprofit organization based in Western New York. Field & Fork Network

Patrick Smeraldo, director of the coalition, is excited for the potential. “The Chautauqua Connections Children’s Coalition along with its 40 partner agencies and service providers has been in existence for the last 6 years creating partnerships and fostering communication to better serve all children birth to five supporting their social, physical,

The smell of a campfire, sultry hot days and cool comfy nights with softly croaking frogs, fireflies and the Big Dipper, that is June becoming July. It already leaves me wanting for more of this perfection in weather and nature. We have not had this for a year, a whole long year! No wonder it is all so amazing; we have put in our time, waited it out, and dreamt about it and all of a sudden it is summer! It’s walking out the backdoor barefooted and sipping coffee in the clear morning sun. It’s working your heart out on the garden until you’re completely worn out! But the weather is warm and relaxing and good. This is sort of a rest time in gardens here at our place as far as flowers ‘in bloom’. It’s a pause that is almost shocking because there are very few flowers right now in most of the main flower beds. Soon there will be an explosion of blossoms in many colours but for now it is just a big combo of green contemplation in waiting. Thank goodness for the newly opening small rounded Annabelle Hydrangea blooms that are just now beginning to show themselves in cloudlike

They are the perfect complement to the only flowers that I can see from the window or porch, the vibrant red Asiatic and rare red Oriental Liliums in the Dawn Redwood bed. They really do make a stunning duet! Red and green are opposites on the colour wheel and therefore called ‘complementary’ colours and that they are! Luckily though there is a hidden garden here that cannot be seen from the house that I refer to as the Shade garden, Hosta Villa or the Fern forest. It is situated on and around the found brick floor of a former horse barn that once stood here on this property in the early 1900s. I say luckily because that garden is in bloom right now. Even though the colours and flowers are subtler there, it is their opportunity to shine. The 5 -6 foot tall Goatsbeard (Aruncus) has huge fluffy panicle shaped plumage in white that changes to off

A columnist for a Eugene, Oregon paper wrote, “Hippies have taken over the north end of town and the business people don’t like it. They have signs saying shoes and shirts are required – no entrance to bare feet.” Some signs of the times were even more blunt, signs that said “no long hairs”. Another sign that became popular around the 1970’s was “please wait to be seated” prior to that only a very upscale restaurant might have sign like that posted. Casual restaurants, you just went in and sat down wherever you wanted. But once there were long-haired people, out came the ‘Please wait to be seated’ signs. While the “No shirt, No shoes, No service” signs definitely exploded in the early 1970s, it doesn’t mean that they did not exist before then. In the 1950’s many Beach communities, had the signs posted, much more than the rest of the country. The culture in the 1950”s was more formal, almost all restaurants, even beachside

snack bars required shirts and shoes to order food. Today you are more likely to find a sign that reads “No shirt, No shoes, No problem!” at beach communities. What seems to be clear from the history of the “Shirt and Shoes Required” sign is that it never had anything to do with enforcing health codes, although several early versions of the sign included, “By order of the Board of Health.” There are laws that require food service employees to wear the “proper attire”, but there are no rules for patrons. It is not illegal for a business owner to refuse to serve someone without a shirt or shoes? Private business owners are allowed to enforce their own dress code as long as it’s not discriminatory. experience. “Our kitchen is wide open, you can see everything-the copper wood fired oven, the brewery equipment, tanks and taps,” Daughrity iterates. “The highest quality ingredients” are used in all of his products, he continued. There are menu items that reflect Americana. Red, white, and blue chips with chipotle shredded chicken and toppings to bring it all together are listed as an appetizer, among other choices. Abe’s House is an Angus beef burger with American-style toppings. Top Hat is a trendier version of a burger topped with smoky Gouda, portabella mushrooms and balsamic glaze. Of the ten different pizza choices, made in that copper wood fired oven, Honest Abe’s stands out as a thematic entry. The pizzas, burgers, and salads can be customized. Hot and cold sandwiches and wraps are menu features, too. Youngsters will enjoy the kid’s menu. A brew pub doesn’t exist without suds and at Grace & Abe’s there are many choices. Besides Abe’s Ales that are made exclusively for the pub, Daughrity features more beer from 7 Sins Brewery in Ripley-which he also owns. Those beers, named after the seven deadly sins, include Cherry Wheat, Amber Ale, Stout, IPA, Belgian Wheat, Pilsner, and an American Brown Ale. Clearly, there is

Before he become famous as a crooner, a young singer named Frank Sinatra played the Casino with the Harry James band. As Steve Carlson noted, “That (touring) cycle happened several times a year. Anybody that was in the music business wanted to be on that trip. Back then, the singers often were not introduced, because it was all about the band. But we know that Frank Sinatra sang here twice. And back in those days, there wasn’t all the entertainment we have today. The idea back then was to go out and break bread and have fun with your friends.” Andrew Carlson says there has always been something “almost magical” about Bemus Point. Going way back, fire pits showed it to be a gathering point for Indian tribes including the Seneca’s and other peoples from Pennsylvania and Ohio. “All the families would meet party and spend time here and discuss what they’re going to do for the future. The word casino translated into the language of Native Americans means to party. So it’s a magical location. We added the word ‘Village’ fifteen years ago to show our commitment to the village.” Visitors often come to the Village Casino with unique stories about the memorable times they had upstairs, like the couple who had their first dance there in the 1930s. “It’s kind of a unique feeling to be a

part of that.” The Carlson family took over the building twenty years ago, and added the main deck at that point. A second deck came about seven years later. The changes made allowed diners inside to see the lake. They made extensive renovations, and more work is planned. “We’re adding handicapped elevator accessibility for the upstairs. This will be the first time in the Village Casino’s history it’s ever had handicapped accessibility to this area.” The new accessibility will allow the upstairs to be a full service entertainment hall, bringing in musical entertainment and traveling shows, in addition to traditional wedding gatherings. An emphasis on fine family dining will be preserved. Speaking of entertainment, rising country artist Joe Noto will play at the Village Casino on July 7th and July 21st from 1-3pm. Words like powerful, passionate, and entertaining have been used to describe Joe Noto, who plays guitar, bass, drums and piano. He’s been playing on stages around South Florida since he was eleven, and is now pursuing his childhood dream. He’s been influenced by Alan Jackson, Zac Brown and Travis Tritt in developing his own strand of country. Noto has played with Craig Campbell and opened for Danielle Bradberry, The Cadillac Three, LANCO, Drake White, Kane Brown, Luke Combs and Jake Owen.

educational programming to provide an accurate portrayal of these important animals.” As a scientist, Townsend is deeply concerned with the state of the planet, including our own local habitats. He speaks powerfully about these issues. “Global and local issues are intertwined, and I believe largely stem from over-exploitation and misuse of natural resources. From the small scale to global scale, the damage done to the environment from resource extraction and consumption has led to a changing climate and a host of related issues (deforestation/habitat loss/ fragmentation, environmental pollution, etc). Microplastic pollution is a symptom of this as well. Right now, plastic particles are being found in nearly everything sampled, including us. Plastics are choking our rivers and oceans and are made with hydrocarbons, which come from fossil fuels. “It may be true that both fossil fuels and plastics are essential in some ways, but the vast majority of these uses are not essential, and are in fact squandered on single use items or woefully inefficient electrical production, transport, and use. The way we use resources must change. If we can control our consumption, many of the environmental issues we have would begin to lessen. Healthy, high quality ecosystems are key to healthy economies, healthy populations, and healthy biodiversity.” Personally, Townsend seems like a person who will influence the world in some enormous and positive fashion. He suggests the earth is in crisis, and he reminds us our entire imperative to keep the planet healthy. He sees the interrelationship of sound

economies with environmental health. Life on “this planet,” he states unequivocally, “developed over billions of years, and each and every species matters in the context of deep evolutionary history as well as current ecological linkages. Based on that alone, we owe this life respect and should be striving to protect it every day at every level of society.” His words are particularly important today amidst melting polar ice caps, violent weathers, and multiple species dying off at alarming rates. It is not time to turn a blind eye to the health of the planet. It can start in our own backyards. He encourages us to tend our own gardens because ecology and respect for the environment starts there: “Planting a wide variety of native plants in your gardens helps to replace lost ecological connections… and benefits impacted ecosystems while beautifying my property with these wildflowers.. The weekly Spotlight recognizes individuals in Chautauqua County for their pursuit and achievement of their passion. These individuals include musicians, artists, teachers, and other individuals who though their dedication contribute to quality of life of the community. The column is under the guidance of Lee Stein who states, “I hope that by recognizing them they will serve as examples to the youth of the county of what is possible with hard work an dedication. You just have to pay for food and beverages. Children are not discouraged from attending though you must be 21 or older to partake in alcohol. Southern Tier Brewing’s Lakewood location has grown into one of the largest craft brewers in the country. They sell their handcrafted ales in more than 30 US States. For the festival, Steve said they would be featuring their

“Mango Crush” which is their summer sour ale. Mike also stated, “We expect a crowd of 800 to 1,000 people. It’s a lot of fun for everyone. We are featuring the Steve Davis Group on our outdoor amphitheater stage” Steve Davis (an artist we actually just highlighted in last week’s Ledger) is Jamestown born and raised and is a teacher at the Infinity Visual & Performing Arts Center, along with being a notable and talented musician. Mike also noted “Our outdoor bar should be open by the time of the festival as well.” So you could grab a few thirst quenching drinks while you enjoy the fabulous summer air. You can also visit the Empty Pint taproom at their state-ofthe-art production brewery in Lakewood, New York. Since their founding in the early 2000s, The Empty Pint

has poured fresh beers and served as the launching point for Saturday brewery tours (which you must be 21 years or older to attend). Their expansive outdoor beer garden is open seasonally. They offer a wide selection of cold packaged beer to go, along with growlers and crowlers of 14 draught beers, a gift shop, and killer pub fare. “We’re here for beer, but our lunch and dinner menu is widely known for pairing perfectly with your beverage of choice. Our sandwiches and tacos are piled high with meats from a hickory fired inhouse smoker. “ Summer is a time of long days and exciting nights. The “Summer Funk & Soul Festival” at the Southern Tier Brewing Company is the perfect event for your whole family to enjoy. And everyone is invited, so hope to see you all there!”

as a leader in the political and economic life of the village of Lakewood. His family farm – one of the seven that made up the village - was strategically placed with the Cowing farm as its western border. The grand Kent House hotel stood on a small portion of the Bentley lakeside holding. Fred A. Bentley when in his mid-thirties was a real estate salesman. He may have worked with his neighbor, John Cowing as he developed the Lakeview House, the first hotel in the village. When the first Packards, John and Warren, came to Lakewood in 1880 with their ambitious building activities, Fred A. Bentley was surely involved. To the wider region Mr. Bentley was well known as a banker. In the early years of Lakewood’s development

there was no local banking available. The Chautauqua County Bank, established in 1830, had offices in Mayville and Jamestown, which was difficult for Lakewood residents to access. After Fred A. Bentley was appointed to a position with the Chautauqua County Bank as a director and Vice President of that institution, he was able to negotiate a more direct means of access to the Bank for the growing Lakewood community. He subsequently founded the much more available Bank of Jamestown and served as its President for many years. Local politics was another activity where Bentley’s name was prominent. He was elected Busti Supervisor for two terms, not concurrently. As Lakewood moved into its golden age, steamboat, trains and resort living, it became an incorporated village. Fred A. Bentley became its first Mayor (President). It could be said that he became President

for life since after serving six terms as Mayor he died in office in 1904. During his terms as Mayor, the basic laws and ordinances of Lakewood that we still have today were developed. Fred A. Bentley’s grandfather, Uriah, is remembered for his legendary canoe trip from Mayville on a wintery November day as he brought his wife and children to their new home in a large log cabin on the southeast shore of Chautauqua Lake. Uriah’s heritage remains in the large sturdy home that he built in 1837. Masterfully constructed, its three brick thick walls and use of stone for interior steps and floors do not distract from its artistically pleasing style. Fred A. Bentley spent his entire life in the Bentley house and it remained a family home until well past the mid-point of the twentieth century. Today, it is a landmark on Fairmount Ave., a storied setting for the Lakewood Furniture Store.
