Jazz Fest Swings Into Summer Annual Event Promotes Good Times and Great Music, July 30-August 1 BY JOHN THOMAS

Inside Business Track: Elkdale Country Club...page 5 By Dean Whitcomb There really is nothing like 7 o’clock sometimes. There are songs about 5 o’clock, 5 o’clock shadows, and stories upon stories following 2 o’clock last calls in every pub and bar in Cattaraugus County when it’s dark as shadows outside. But really, there is nothing like 7 o’clock.

Street Painting Festival Springville Honors Tradition, Next Sunday...page 3 The third annual Springville Street Painting Festival will be on Sunday, August 1, 2010 from 12-6pm. All are invited to chalk up the park!

Starting off Friday, July 30 Balloons will present the vocalist Barbara Jean Strickland with Michael T. Jones on keyboard. Michael told me how he started playing with Barbara Jean; several years ago he was playing at Bobbie McGee’s in Buffalo when a young woman approached him about singing with a band and possibly recording some of her music. She gave him a CD of some songs she had recorded. Michael admits to having been skeptical about her music, but when he played it he said, “It was great!” They have been playing together ever since, and last year recorded a full CD. Dan Hull, a well-known area bass player and Cameron Kayne on drums will join them. The group will play some well-known standards; Michael says “some Gershwin and Cole Porter; songs you would hear from Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra” as well as some of Barbara’s original tunes. Madigan’s will showcase the talents of Sue Kincaid and Ron Davis Saturday from 6pm to 9pm. Sue will provide vocals with Ron on keyboard, performing what he calls “left hand bass.” Ron describes their music as “high quality standards; Billie Holiday kind of stuff; we kind of swing pretty nice.” Sue will play percussion while singing and will switch off singing with Ron. Ron SEE JAZZ PAGE 9

One of the most popular summer events is the annual Jazz Festival running this year from July 30th to August 1st. The festival, gathering together some of the area’s coolest jazz bands, promises to be one of the best ever. Downtown stores, restaurants, and bars will all participate, and Monroe Street will be closed off for some performances. Big band music lovers will find lots to enjoy Sunday afternoon when the Jim Tudini Band takes Monroe Street Stage (pictured above).

Publisher’s Word “Boy, They’re Good...” Fair? I’m here to tell you it was fantastic! This was (once again) a wonderful community event, filled with fun, food, and fab volunteers. The event’s success could be judged by simply looking at all the smiles. Everyone had a super time, but the kids were just a delight to watch. Whether riding in the horse-drawn hay wagon or tractor trailer, playing with the kitties and puppies, slurping down a snow cone, or enjoying the petting zoo, the kids obviously had the best time of all. Another great job by Bob McCarthy and So, did you take my advice our own wonderful band of last week and check out the Rotarians, Alley Katz and local Americana Folk Art and Music historians. The money raised

will be well spent on improving the lives of hundreds of local youths and their families who live and visit our little village - our home. It’s no wonder the spirit of Ellicottville goes on from generation to generation. The genuine love we feel for this village transcends from parents to children, who are fortunate enough to experience what life around this little resort village is all about. We’re lucky, lucky folks, aren’t we? So, dear readers, you’ve heard this here before – this place just keeps getting better and better. No need to travel far – stick around, save your gas and have a gas! Until next week… JZ

The famous corps has finished in the top five for the last 27 years in the world and has won the DCI World Championships, an unprecedented 13 times, and are the reigning 2009 World Champions. Billed as the best of the best in drum corps because of their consistent domination of the competitions, the Blue Devils will dazzle the crowed with their mastery of synchronized formations and their unparalleled musical talent. Joining the Blue Devils at this year’s show is the acclaimed US Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, which is the only full time active duty drum corps in the United States Armed Forces. The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps consists of 85 active-duty Marines dressed in ceremonial red and white uniforms. Its origins date back to the 18th and 19th centuries when military musicians provided a means of passing commands to Marines in battle. The sounds of various drum beats and bugle calls that could be heard over the noise of the battlefield signaled Marines to attack the

enemy or retreat. The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps “The Commandant’s Own” was formally established in 1934 at the historic Marine Barracks in Washington D.C. and was primarily used for military and presidential events. In the early 1950s, the unit gained considerable acclaim when it began performing for civilian audiences. Today the corps can be found touring the nation and participating in some of the countries most prestigious parades. “This year’s event is going to be a show stopper, featuring the best drum corps in the world competing in what has become one of the favorite stops on the Drum Corp International competitive tour,” states Jack Gaylord Jr., president, Drums Along the Waterfront Inc. “Besides having the world famous Blue Devils returning this year to defend their 2009 DATW title, for the first time the US Marine Drum and Bugle Corps will take part in the show and excite the crowd with their flawless performance and fill SEE DRUMS PAGE 8

Springville Honors Tradition, Next Sunday August 1, 2010 The third annual Springville Street Painting Festival will be on Sunday, August 1, 2010 from 12-6pm. All are invited to chalk up the park! There will be live music from Heard of Buffalo, Lindsay Burgio, Alison Pipitone and the Springville All-Star Marching Band. The festival is located on Franklin Street between Mechanic & Chapel Street. Artists will reproduce their most favorite works. Like the true madonnari (Italian street art painter) the work will last only as long as the next rain or street cleaning. The beauty of this art form is observing the artist in progress while enjoying a festive atmosphere. The tradition of street painting originated in Italy in the 16th Century. These Italian artists known as “madonni” (after the religious figures they painting such as the Madonna) were vagabonds traveling between festivals as a sideshow making a living off of tips thrown to them while showcasing their talents. They were folk artists

using minimal materials to reproduce simple images on the beaten earth or paved public squares. Today, the tradition still lives strong in Italy where they host

Village Announcement Police Department Joins Missing Persons Program ELLICOTTVILLE-Dear Community of Ellicottville, The Ellicottville Police Department would like to let the community know about a new program that we have joined and will use if ever needed. The program is called “A Child is Missing.” This program is free for law enforcement agencies to join and utilize. It is a tool that our department can use to assist in missing person situations. Such situations encountered may be a missing child from infant to age 18, elderly individuals (often suffering from Alzheimer’s), mentally challenged individuals, disabled individuals and run-aways. The program can assist in locating parents of children found to have wandered off alone, and identifying and locating other family members or guardians for any individual who is found without identification for any reason. The community will benefit as a whole from this program as well as it is also used to advise the community when a criminal/ dangerous person is on the run within our are and also when a convicted sex-offender has moved into the town. The program is operated quite simply. The first officer reporting on scene from the Ellicottville Police Department will call the “A Child is Missing” dispatch number and will relay all information

regarding the missing individual including where they were last seen. The dispatcher will then view the area through a geomapping system with satellite images and will advise the reporting officer of wooded and water areas to search. A prerecorded message is then sent out to all listed phone numbers within a given area to provide information on the missing, or dangerous individual, in which case the message will advise you to remain inside until advised otherwise by police. If the message is regarding a missing person, the message will give a description of the person and ask you to observe your surrounding neighborhood for him/her. If you do see something or can provide any information regarding the situation, please call Ellicottville Police and we will contact the investigating officer. The system is able to send out 1,000 calls in 60 seconds, which is very helpful given that time is of great importance in missing person(s) cases. If you have a phone number that is unlisted, or there is a better way to reach you, you may log onto www. achildismissing.org and add your number in order to receive the calls. This program has helped thousands of law enforcement departments around the United States recover missing children and

individuals as well as locating the parents of children who have been found alone. Every 40 seconds a child goes missing in the United States. Our department hopes it never happens to any family in our community, however, should such an even take place, we want to make every conceivable effort to prepare ourselves to do the best job we can in returning missing persons home safely. We firmly believe this program will be a great to utilize if ever needed. The program also works cooperatively with Amber Alert whenever a situation calling for that specific program takes place. We at the Ellicottville Police Department wanted to spread awareness that we have joined this program and that villagers may be receiving phone calls containing missing persons information. If you should receive a phone call for these matters, please do not hang up! Take the time to listen and help us by looking around your home and property. If anyone in the community has questions regarding this program, or simply wishes to learn more about it, do not hesitate to call. Contact Sergeant Ashley Butler at (716) 699-2120 or log-on to www.achildismissing. org. The Ellicottville Police Department thanks you for your time.

World Harmony Run Relay Run Across the Length of America A relay run across the length and breadth of America dedicated to the cause of world harmony will pass through over 1,000 cities and towns this summer. (Please call 888-8824081 to confirm arrival time, all times are 24hr clock). The World Harmony Run is now the world’s largest relay run. Founded by peace leader Sri Chinmoy in 1987, the World Harmony Run has blossomed into a remarkable global grassroots phenomenon with a clear message “Harmony begins in the heart of each one of us!” This year teams of runners will carry the torch more than 45,000 miles to over 100 countries. That is like running around the circumference of the earth – twice. Runners in the 10,000 mile 50-state USA World Harmony Run are carrying a flaming torch to symbolize their goal of harmony through sports. The World Harmony Run touches

the lives of millions of people along its route. The runners visit schools, community groups, running clubs, and local and national government organizations. At these events they talk about their experiences, and share their inspiration and enthusiasm for the goal of world harmony. On behalf of hundreds of thousands of citizens across the globe who are participating, the World Harmony Run is honored to support the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures as designated by the United Nations and UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Dr. Davidson Hepburn, President of the 35th General Conference of UNESCO, offered the following words of support. “The World Harmony Run provides a chance for all participants to expand their

awareness and to gain practical experience of other cultures. It is also an excellent opportunity to develop an appreciation of diversity through art, culture and sports. This communal sharing of our hopes and dreams is so necessary for building the foundations of peace and harmony.” The World Harmony Run has been endorsed by many of the nation’s Mayors, Governors and Members of the Congress, by world-class athletes like Carl Lewis and Grete Waitz, by leaders of numerous countries, by the late Pope John Paul II, the late Mother Teresa and Archbishop Desmond Tutu as well as many others. Everyone is encouraged to participate. Find out how by calling (888) 882-4081 or visiting www.worldharmonyrun.org/ usa. Olean Gus Macker Assists Needed for August 20-22 Tournament

OLEAN -- Gus Macker 3-on3 Basketball Tournament started in 1974 by Scott McNeal (alias Gus Macker) on his parents’ driveway basketball court in Lowell, Michigan with 18 friends playing competitively for $18. Since then, the Macker Tournaments has expanded, holding both indoor and outdoor tournament in over 50 cities and with over 150,000 players and 1.0 million spectators enjoying 3-on-3 competition and family fun each year. The Macker has grown to national prominence, but is still run in a hometown, friendly manner. Teams of various age, size, and talent levels pay a team registration fee for the opportunity to compete against other teams of similar make-up and the chance to win top-quality trophies.

By prohibiting alcohol or tobacco-related sponsors, the Macker has maintained the wholesome nature and pure fun of the event which draws players, spectators, and media wherever it is held. Gus Macker is scheduled for Olean August 20-22, 2010. The 3-day event is organized by the Olean High School Sports Booster and the Olean City School District Foundation. Salamanca’s WGWE-FM Radio Says “What’s Up” BY ERIC HUND

Mike Smith, “Smitty,” has spent the last 10 years working as a disc jockey on the radio, but now he gets a chance to manage a station. Smith, who had worked for the radio station WPIG-FM 95.7 since 1999, has taken on the role of program director for WGWE-FM 105.9 since mid-December of 2009. He said that, as part of his job launching the station, he was involved in setting up the equipment and refitting the building to function as a radio station. Smith said setting up the station was quite an experience, and working as WGWE’s program director has been an adventure that’s far different from that of just a DJ. He said, “At the PIG if something didn’t work I just complained about it, now I’m the one who has to fix it.” GWE, which roughly translates into the phrase “What’s up,” launched on Feb. 1, 2010, and serves all of the Seneca Nation’s territories and their neighbors by providing local and Native cultural programming, information and entertainment. Smith said that John Garlow’s Seneca Radio Society proposed the idea for a radio station controlled by, and servicing, the Seneca Nation 20 years ago.

Smith, who had worked for the radio station WPIG-FM 95.7 since 1999, has taken on the role of program director for WGWE-FM 105.9 since mid-December of 2009.

He said that, while the Seneca Radio Society’s plans did not materialize during the group’s existence, Seneca Holdings took up the cause. Smith said Seneca Holdings created WGWE 2 years ago as part of its attempt to diversify income streams for the Seneca Nation beyond the Casino and gas and cigarette sales, and WGWE serves as part of the Seneca Holdings economic development initiative for the Seneca Nation and surrounding communities. The station has a Classic Hits format featuring music from the 60s, 70s and 80s, as well as the local and Native programming, and the station is managed and run entirely by enrolled members of the Seneca Nation. The station features state of the art on-air and production

studios located on the Seneca Nation’s Allegany territory. Smith said he learned so much about the radio industry while working at WPIG, and that prior to working at the station he had never produced a program or taken part in a live broadcast. He said that his associates at WPIG taught him how to be a radio personality, and he learned what it takes to be in charge of a station by watching them. Smith became well known in the community during his time with WPIG for his support of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, his offthe-wall request show and his countless live appearances. Smith also hosts the Wake up with Smitty in the morning

There really is nothing like 7 o’clock sometimes. There are songs about 5 o’clock, 5 o’clock shadows, and stories upon stories following 2 o’clock last calls in every pub and bar in Cattaraugus County when it’s dark as shadows outside. But really, there is nothing like 7 o’clock. The smell of fresh cut grass soothes a chest and mind after a late night out in the village. The fresh dew upon the grass and the fog rolling slowly away from the tree dline reveals a smile upon the faces of those saddling up in carts that seem to even yawn themselves at the first step on the gas. From the sight of the earlyrisers clipping the final greens and yawning as the sun rises, to the feel of your bones cracking and muscles stretching as you take that inevitable “breakfast-ball,” rfirst cut on number one tee, ethere really is nothing like 7 o’clock, especially in the morning, and especially at Elkdale Country Club. Okay, so as it turns out it doesn’t have to be 7 o’clock in the morning to play golf, but from the point of view of a golfer, there really is nothing like an early morning round of golf to start the weekend. Long-time Elkdale Pro Shop employee, Marcus Stephens, agrees. “You just have to be here,” Stephens boasts. “Let me put it this way, it’s [Elkdale] only fifteen minutes from the village of Ellicottville, so if you can drive that far, do it sometime! Elkdale is totally worth your time and is a course that can be played by and is challenging to players of all skill levels.” According to Elkdale’s website, it is an 18-hole golf course spanning 6,132 yards (tee to green). The front nine “was built in 1927 and is cut through varied terrain and mature trees.” Scratch golfers are challenged in several ways on the front nine from its smaller “dimesized” greens to its variety of natural terrain and tree lines. On the other hand, the front side also delivers a warm welcome to golfers of any skill level as the fairways are open and out-

Elkdale isn’t only appealing to golfers. The Clubhouse comprises a restaurant atmospher and family fun in offering fine-dining as well as a patio and swimming pool for entertainment, and not to mention, and incredible view.

of-bounds markers are found almost exclusively along the outer-most borders of the land itself. The back nine, also according to the website, “was built in the 1960’s and is a bit longer with larger greens.” Although it is seemingly much flatter than the front nine, holes 10 through 18 present challenges in several different ways. Number 15, in particular, can be a struggle to any player. The sheer size of this legendary Elkdale “giant” is intimidating. The 555 yard, par 5 is a menace to short and long-hitters alike and has a green exemplary of any back-side green at Elkdale; large in surface area, but deceiving in both break and hardness. The back nine may rival the front in overall beauty, but it certainly steps up the competition against all those who challenge her. The Pro Shop is manned by several employees, headed by PGA Professional, Jack Widger. Widger has been the PGA Professional at Elkdale since 2001 and has been an Elkdale golfer since he began golfing. A staff of 10, including Widger himself, runs the shop. The Pro Shop is responsible fiscally not only for the daily rounds and tournaments played, but also for the arrangement and management of golf outings and tournaments alike. This includes everything from play format, tournament setup and cleanup, scoring, prize allocation and dispersal, to retail sales. Widger takes pride in the fact that his shop is not only staffed by both young and older adults that he can

trust, but the fact that all of his staff members have personality. “You need people with personality working for you, especially in an environment like this,” Widger recommends. “You have all sorts of customers coming in here paying a lot of money for golf and equipment. It’s so important and so pleasing to me to have a staff that can interact with anyone that walks in the door. We like to make people feel at home whenever they’re here, even if they’re members somewhere else.” Elkdale isn’t only appealing to golfers however. The Clubhouse, managed by Denise Lord, comprises a restaurant atmosphere and family fun in offering finedining as well as a patio and swimming pool for entertainment for customers of all ages. Lord heads up a staff of 12 employees who perform duties in several facets. Most employees take on several responsibilities at the Clubhouse restaurant including serving, bartending, hosting and even cooking. The fact is, the Clubhouse itself acts as the nucleus for the entire staff family that runs Elkdale from the nitty-gritty up to the gourmet service and professional leadership. Without the work done in the Clubhouse, all of the fun and relaxation associated with the sport of golf would not be possible there. “I am fortunate to have a staff here that is as close-knit as they are,” Lord smiles. Now introducing Shellac Hybrid Nail Color! My name is Erica Walker. I am 35 years old. I have most recently been attending Erie Community College in hopes of attaining my Registered Nursing degree. I have about another year before I complete it. However, I’ve decided to take a break from it while attending to my most recent illness. I am trying to be brave and stay healthy enough until I can receive a kidney transplant. Doctors say I’m fairly young to be diagnosed with CKD. I have been receiving dialysis treatments for about a year now. I worked at Interstate Baking Company for 10 years prior to the plant closing a few years back. They made Wonder Bread and Hostess products right here in Buffalo, NY. My boyfriend, Jim, and I have recently purchased and moved into our first home. We’re very excited. Our plans are to marry and raise a family here in Cheektowaga. If you are blood type “A” and would like to be Erica’s living kidney donor, please call Jeanette Ostrom at 716-450-8958 or e-mail Erica at jmark1@roadrunner.com To the world you may be just one person, but to one person, you just may be the world. Architectural Digest Upscale Sophistication in the Forest STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOHN THOMAS

“Jaw-dropping gorgeous” is a phrase I usually reserve for supermodels, but it’s exactly what I said to myself when I entered the house on High Meadows Road. The exterior of the house is impressive enough. The high-peaked roof and the two-story open-sided tower that frames the front door emphasize the height of the two-story façade. The tower’s roofline and matching dormer window create white triangles that emphasize the upward lines of the exterior. The cedar walls blend artfully with the brick front steps and dark stained front door. But it’s inside where the real drama begins. Going up the short flight of steps that lead to the main floor I can peer into a section of the living room. As I climb up the view into the living room expands. The room seems to expand back and extend upward as I come around the corner, and find myself standing in an absolute palace of a room. Yes, my jaw dropped. Apart from the shear size of this two-story room the first things I notice are the beautiful cherry wood walls. Custom built bookshelves and drawers line the wall between the windows. There are box seats in front of most

The exterior of the house is impressive enough. The high-peaked roof and the two-story open-sided tower that frames the front door emphasize the height of the two-story façade.

The cherry wood from the living room continues here as wainscoting, and trim for the windows. The view looks out across the deck to the forest. A sliding glass door provides access to the deck, and just past the door is a little coffee table with two chairs, a perfect spot for Mom and Dad to have a quiet moment together. The oversized kitchen is separated from the room by a two level counter. One side is a handsome cherry wood breakfast bar with sculpted metal stools, and the other is a working counter for the kitchen with the sink and dishwasher. The cherry cabinets are accented by Tiffany glass doors. A cherry lined cut out in the ceiling breaks up what would otherwise be a plain white ceiling. Down the hall is a bedroom and bath that could be the master or a mother-inlaw suite. A Tiffany chandelier hangs over the three-story stairway leading up to the bedroom area. On the upper walls more windows let in the afternoon light. The windows are built into their own recesses creating a sense of detail and unique style. Overhead, the open beamed ceiling reaches cathedral height. Altogether the room has the elegance and ambiance of a fine library. The far right wall extends back to the dining area. be the master. There are two more kid bedrooms here and another full bath. By far the house’s most unique feature is the reading tower just off the bedrooms. It’s octagonal and walled with oversized windows, under which are pillow covered benches; perfect for curling up with a book or an afternoon snooze. The chandelier would add just the right touch of elegance to the latest Dan Brown potboiler. Descending to the bottom floor I discover that this house is more than just a pretty veneer. Down a short flight of steps from the front door is the mudroom. It’s just of the large one car garage and as well thought out as the rest of the house. There are plenty of hooks benches and cubbies for gear and a closet for wet clothes. Just off the mudroom is a kid’s activity room clearly designed for “home-schoolers.” It features a built-in black board and large corkboard. There is plenty of room for the kids to spread out lesion plans or games. Here also are two bunkrooms and a full bath. I step out onto the deck and feel the breeze drifting through

the trees. The lush lawn and the green of the forest create a quiet relaxing setting for outdoor dining. It’s all to uncommon to find a home with this kind of attention to detail and this high a degree of sophistication even in the city, but out here in the forest, its rarer still. OBJECTIVELY SPEAKING By providing their clients with a dispassionate perspective, real estate agents help sellers see their homes through prospective buyers’ eyes. Armed with these honest appraisals, sellers have the guidance they need to put their properties in their most marketable condition. While this preparation strategy may border on common sense, many homeowners overlook detracting conditions that they have come to accept as normal. Because prospective buyers are not likely to be as forgiving of such things as peeling paint, cluttered closets, and malodorous rooms, it can pay big dividends to have a real estate agent point them out. Once the house is cleaned, painted, and/or repaired in a cost-effective manner, it stands its best chance of attracting attention and serious offers. HINT: If necessary, rugs, draperies, and furniture containing smoke, pet, and cooking odors should be removed (and replaced) if a home is soon to hit the market.

BY KATHERINE PRESTON Question: What are shin splints? Can orthotics help? Shin splints, or Periostitis, occur on the front lower leg. Here, the sheath (periostium) surrounding the shinbone (tibia) becomes inflamed. Pain may also result from a stress fracture in the bone. Symptoms may include: 1.) Shin pain, 2.) Possible swelling and/or redness, 3.) Pain when pointing your toes, 4.) Tenderness on the inside/ top of the shin, and 5.) Possible lumps on the bone.

Some people find they’reC wonderful. Unfortunately, itt seems that not everyone cano comfortably wear them something that may only bet discovered after purchasing.t Any slight changes in yourS feet or footwear can requirec an updated orthotic. 9 Be cautious in your choice of the surface you run/c walk on. It’s best to avoidy hard surfaces (concrete andF asphalt), which offer veryf little “give” and a lot of4 impact. a Foot structure is crucial. Ifo your foot rolls to the inside/w outside, stress occurs on youre shin. A shoe with extra archa and ankle support can maket a BIG difference in keeping your ankle straight, insteadf of rolling to one side. n Early diagnosis and restD affect the healing process. Initial icing for 10-minute intervals may control the swelling. It’s best to consult with your doctor to discuss the various methods of care and recovery and to determine what’s best for you. When returning to fitness, choose a low-impact activity. By taking the proper precautions, you’ll be back in step soon!

Opinion:

Burke Contracting, LLC Call Pat Burke

When examining the causes, we can also focus on their prevention. Overuse is often the biggest culprit – i.e. too much too soon! They can also result from quick, insufficient warm-ups prior to exercising. Spinal alignment is vital. A forward lean results in sudden, harsh impact on your heels. Here, your foot rapidly overextends when taking your weight on your ball and toes. This fast, continual “overextension is very straining on your shin (comparable to wearing high heels). A “tall” spine and lighter placement of your heel can lessen any stress on your tibia/ “shinbone”. Footwear choice is important. A shoe with built-in shock absorbers and heal support can also assist in lessening your step’s impact. Also, if you continually tend to take most of the impact of your step on your toes and balls of your feet (sprinting, long striding or aerobic dancing) you may also encourage shin splints. Again, a smoother, softer, slower heel placement can make a BIG difference. Orthotics can improve many foot ailments, as an impression of your foot and step can be taken and molded for them.

Tradition, dedication and honor. Three words not often heard in the sports world anymore. Where have the heroes gone? We live in a world that is vastly different from the one our parents grew up in. In the not too distant past those three words weren’t needed. They were implied. Our heroes were part of a larger organism. The team. The team played as one. Win or lose there was always honor and sportsmanship. Any remaining vestige of those glory days died two weeks ago with the LeBron spectacle and the nail was firmly driven deep into the coffin lid this week with the death of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. “The Boss.” I don’t even know where to begin with LeBron James. Contrary to what the fans in Cleveland might believe, James had every right in the world to move on. Free agency, like it or not, is the way of the world now and it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere anytime soon. The way LeBron handled the situation and the pathetic pandering of ESPN is another story

Drums

CONT. FROM PAGE 2 the stadium with pride and patriotism as they salute US veterans for their sacrifices.” Other World class corps competing in the area’s only DCI sanctioned event include: top world title contender, Boston Crusaders (Boston, MA), Troopers (Casper, WY), The Academy (Tempe, AZ) and Cascades (Seattle, WA), Spirit (Atlanta GA) and Pioneer (Milwaukee, WI), In exhibition will be the Mighty St. Joe’s Alumni Corps (LeRoy, NY), Preston Scout House Alumni Corps (Preston, ON), The Toronto Optimists Alumni Corps (Toronto, ON), and the five time DCA Champion

altogether. LeBron could have easily explained himself with a simple press release or local news conference and the sting felt by Cavs fans would have been much more bearable. Instead we were subjected to that awful, painful and disgusting primetime, ESPN interview. The LeBron show became a paid advertisement for ego stroking and faked sports journalism. The whole episode reminded me of a late night infomercial only with less tact. The idea that James was somehow shocked by the anger felt by Cleveland fans is insulting, not only to them, but to the rest of us. Which brings me to “The Boss.” George Steinbrenner. Rarely, in the sports world, has a franchise owner been so identified with his team that it became impossible to separate the two. Steinbrenner and the Yankees are either the most hated duo in the sports world or the most loved. Steinbrenner has been described as everything from an evil tyrant to a benevolent dictator. The truth lies somewhere in between. One thing “The Boss” was very good at was turning young men into team players which is why LeBron would have never been a Yankee or, like Reggie Jackson, he would have been traded after he became larger then the team. After his death last week the rats could have easily come out of the woodwork. Instead current and former players alike stood as one in support of the Yankees franchise and “The Boss.” Steinbrenner, all of them agreed, had a way of turning brash young players

into men. The way a Yankee conducted himself off the field was just as important to Steinbrenner as the way he performed on the field. If you didn’t like the way he ran his team you might find yourself playing in Baltimore by the end of the week. Steinbrenner, indeed, was a dictator. Your uniform had to be perfect. There would be no beards or long hair on his team. Your political beliefs were yours, not the teams. It was, and is, hard for these talented young men to live outside the spotlight as they watched their contemporaries live it up, but, according to “The Boss’” rules, everything you did was a reflection on the tradition and history of the franchise. Follow these rules and he would make you very, very rich. The New York Yankees are the last team in the sports world to host yearly “Old Timers’ Day.” All the former players come home. This year’s event was no different except for the glaring fact that “The Boss” was gone. His tradition, however, of honoring both the past and present of the most storied franchise in sports history lived on. Reggie Jackson was there and despite the animosity between he and Steinbrenner during his time with the Yankees, he was once again wearing the pin stripes. He had tears in his eyes as “The Boss” was remembered. Reggie and LeBron. One knows where he came from and whom he owes his thanks to. The other one will never be allowed in his hometown again without an armed escort. Past and present. The Boss and The Rat.

Charlesworth, who helps run the Fair, says “we have plenty of grandstand tickets” which should be available the night of the concert, August 5th. “And there are still some track seats.” Show time is 7:30, and tickets can be purchased by calling 938-9146. The many exhibitors who come to Little Valley each year are the backbone of the Fair. Mrs. Charlesworth urges fairgoers to visit not only the 4-H booths, but also the dairy and other livestock shows. “Not only are there the 4-H exhibits, we have all the open class exhibits for dairy, beef, sheep, and pigs. They are a great part of the Fair.” Each night at the Fair finds a featured attraction. Monday night, it’s the Demolition Derby at 7:30. On Tuesday, the

Firemen’s Parade kicks off at 7, followed by something new at 7:30 called Stock Car Football. Stock car drivers are challenged to push a six-foot soccer ball down the playing field in an effort to score a touchdown. It’s been a hit at county fairs, and Mrs. Charlesworth says “that will be interesting.” Do you like tractor and truck pulls? Then don’t miss the East Coast Pullers Wednesday night at 7:30. They sure look ready to do some serious pulling! Speaking of big and mean, The Monster Mash Monster Truck Rally takes the spotlight Friday evening. Mrs. Charlesworth notes that “on Monster Truck Night we have our pit party for the public at 6 p.m. with your grandstand admission. That allows the kids to visit with the drivers and get their autographs, and look the trucks over before they go out on the track.” The Motorcycle Stunt Show is the featured act on Saturday night at 7:30. Looks pretty

risky to me! Rounding out the highlights are two Demolition Derbies on Sunday, August 8th. The Small Car event is at 5, followed by the Large Car Demolition Derby at 7:30. There is a $5.00 grandstand charge for the evening events on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Tickets to see Billy Currington are $28 trackside and $23 grandstand. There are plenty of activities that come with your gate admission. These include the tigers of the Kay Rosaire Big Cat Encounter, and Buford the Bear and His Miniature Truck, very popular with children. And don’t forget “Horses, Horses, Horses, which “always beings in the people,” according to Mrs. Charlesworth. She adds, “We have a new ride company this year, Bates Brothers Amusements out of Pennsylvania.” So come to the Fair! Check the schedule online at www.cattarauguscofair. com.
