hello!
f, like me, you’re frustrated with trying to locate a five, an eight and a ten year-old’s missing hat and gloves, every morning before school, then the arrival of our Spring 2015 Scallywag issue means the sun will shine, the grass will start to grow, the trees will burst into bud. Yes, Scallywag can change the weather! We’re hoping to expand and be able to halt climate change next! (Only kidding- but wouldn’t it be good?) I always feel more energised when the mornings are lighter. I can’t say I make best use of this positive feeling, but at least I have an option to! The Easter school holidays are looming in the not-too-distant future so it could be a good time to start dusting off those cobwebs and getting Out & About in the fresh air. I have featured Brockholes Nature Reserve, close to Junction 31 on the M6 at Preston and the National Football Museum in Manchester, (for when you need an ‘indoor’ option). Also featured in this issue are various groups and initiatives that we think might be interesting, like Home-Start, Valley Shorai Karate Club and the newly set up Rossendale Macmillan Cancer Support group. Again, an enormous ‘Thank You’ to all the advertisers; it is vital to remember that without their support this magazine could never be distributed free of charge, so whilst browsing through please take note of their input, too. Enough from me- enjoy the Spring 2015 Scallywag, then get out there and have fun!

front cover Many thanks to Staghills Nursery School & Children’s Centre, Newchurch, for holding the competition to supply the front cover of the Spring issue of The Scallywag magazine. The children worked so hard to produce some wonderfully happy and colourful pictures. However, this fantastic bright family picture made us smile. ‘Congratulations’ to

news Karate Club celebrates success!
V
alley Shorai Karate Club had a triumphant 2014, and has made a winning start to this year too. Sensei Neil Holroyd thought the experience of entering local and national competitions would be of great benefit to the children who attend his Martial Arts Centre based at Ewood Bridge.
However, the children, of all ages and abilities, outclassed themselves by winning their respective categories many times over. “The Club seems to be going from strength to strength, I couldn’t be more proud of them”, he commented. To get the whole family involved, the club has organised various fund-raising events, including a Club ice-water bucket challenge for Rossendale Hospice and an en masse sticky-moustache-wearing for Movember (for those that couldn’t grow their own)! Neil encourages you to “Come along and meet us! Our award- winning team of instructors are happy to guide, teach and …….have fun with you!”

Home-Start Expand Announcement
ome-Start Rossendale is delighted to announce that with effect from 1 March 2015 we are being joined by Home-Start Burnley & Hyndburn.
The new larger scheme will deliver a more robust service across all three areas. Each area will have its own coordinator and volunteers in order to ensure that the service remains a local charity for local people. If you would like more information or if you are interested in working with us please visit our website www.homestartrossendale.co.uk or contact Emma Heinicke, Business Manager, Home-Start Rossendale, Burnley and Hyndburn on 01706 214621.
Home-Start is an early intervention service, offering a unique package of support to prevent family crisis from escalating. As a voluntary organisation, we are committed to promoting the welfare of families with at least one child under five years of age who live in Rossendale, Burnley and Hyndburn. Home-Start volunteers support parents in situations as diverse as isolation, bereavement, multiple births, illness, disability or those who are just finding parenting a struggle. Volunteers, who are all parents themselves, provide nonjudgemental, practical and emotional support, which helps to build the family’s confidence and ability to cope. All volunteers attend an initial 40 hour training course prior to being linked with a family and many undertake further training through our schemes. Once linked with a family, volunteers are supported and supervised on at least a monthly basis. If you think Home-Start could help you, please contact our Senior Coordinator, Alison Mather on 01706 214621.

news Up and Active goes live in Rossendale
A
new programme encouraging people to get up and get active is launching in Rossendale. Aimed at addressing high levels of inactivity in parts of Rossendale, the Up and Active programme has been funded by Rossendale Borough Council and Lancashire County Council’s public health funding, to contribute to health improvement work within the borough. The programme sees Rossendale Council and Rossendale Leisure Trust working with local groups and organisations to provide activities that are easy to access in the community, activities that anyone can do and which don’t require any special sports kit. Many of the activities are free or low cost. The Up and Active website www. upandactive.co.uk lists all kind of activities suitable for a wide range of people, run by different organisations in Rossendale. From the over 50s looking to start becoming active, to new Mums getting back into exercise and families looking for ways to spend quality leisure time together; there are activities for everyone. Councillor Alyson Barnes, Leader of the Council, said “Up and Active makes it easy for you to find free or very cheap activities that are happening in your local area. Evidence shows that just 20 minutes of activity each day can make a huge difference to your health and wellbeing. Being active isn’t just about going to the gym, it’s about taking small steps to be more active in ways that suit your lifestyle. “ Residents in Rossendale are encouraged to make a pledge to be more active, and in return they’ll be entered into a free prize draw to win a years’ free Leisure Trust membership, worth nearly £400. There are small grants of up to £500 available through the project for local organisations and groups that can help to get inactive people active. Alison
Wilkins from Rossendale Borough Council, who is co-ordinating the project in Rossendale, said ”We want to encourage local groups to join in and help get their communities more active. Funding is available for things like equipment, room hire and instructors.” Groups and organisations in the borough which provide activities and exercise sessions can also promote them on the Up and Active website free of charge. Martin Kay, Chief Executive of Rossendale Leisure Trust said “The Up and Active website is a great source of information about activities in Rossendale, and we are encouraging all local organisations, sports and fitness clubs to contact us to get their activities on the website.”
For more information contact upandactive@ rossendalebc.gov.uk or call Alison Wilkins on 01706 252593.

wishing to buy tickets (should you wish to enhance your visit further) for the interactive exhibitions called Football Plus+. These purchased credits can buy you a photograph of you lifting the FA cup, taking part in a penalty shoot-out or following an autocue and pretending to be Motty on MOTD. We decided not to buy the extra credits and just see what the Museum had to offer.
From the entrance, you are led through the turnstiles and into a Hall of Fame, and so your Football Museum experience begins. You are free to meander on each level where there is a large variety of interactive objects, games and displays. What we found most interesting was that the Museum did not concentrate wholly on the richest, most famous and local teams; ALL teams and football personalities from the UK and in fact worldwide were represented. It was very interesting and as a person with limited football knowledge, I got to know some curious facts. Personally, the best item I discovered was in the main glitzy Cup display area. Amongst all the shiny, famous trophies, shields and awards, was a beaten and slightly worse-for-wear Rossendale Cup. It was last presented
to Stacksteads FC in the 1930’s. I also enjoyed seeing the films being shown of old football footage- it brought back such fond memories of wet, almost-dark Saturday afternoons, watching the TV and the videprinter with my dad, whilst checking the football results against his ‘pools coupon. Needless to say, we never won! After a few levels, both my daughter and I got ‘footballed’ out, plus our feet were tired! So we went to investigate the ground floor café and shop. The café area is large and there seemed a fair variety of foods on offer, including a children’s menu. There seemed to be plenty of high chairs and I believe the staff are happy to warm bottles if required, so it is very family friendly. We settled on cake and hot chocolate (not pies and Bovril, but you could have them if you wish). The shop is also well stocked for all the family too, including pocket money gifts! A point to note is that all the Museum floors are accessible with lifts. I would also say go early, as this is a popular destination during holiday time. Overall, it was a good place to visit with activities for all ages and was an easy way to spend a couple of hours. However, you can get too much of a good thing; it depends on whether you are football fans or not. My son and my husband could easily have stayed the whole day. For me, I would have liked to have dipped into the local shops for an hour too. More importantly, the Birthday Boy had a great time! By Tracey Sunderland
Photos:
It does help that the Birthday Boy (aged 10) has a new-found interest in the ‘beautiful game’ and so The National Football Museum (NFM) in Manchester seemed a good choice. However would his brother and sister enjoy it too? Would there be enough diversity in the 140,000 items on display to interest us all? The NFM originally opened in Preston in 2001, but due to its success and demand for greater accessibility to a wider population, the Museum relocated to Manchester and re-opened in 2012. It claims its existence is to explain how and why football has become, over the last 150 years, ‘the people’s game’ and a key part of England’s heritage and way of life. Thus it explores football past and present, trying to look at the game from every angle, so that non-football fans can appreciate and enjoy the experience too. We took the car to a reasonably-priced City Centre car park, which would have been a good place to find space normally. However, this was three days before Christmas…. The Museum is located in the Urbis building, so right in the City Centre. Admission to the Museum is free; however a discretionary donation is politely requested. The NFM is laid out on five levels. Upon entering the Museum we were met by helpful members of staff at the reception, where we purchased our visitor guide for £1.00 (a must if you want to make the most of your visit). They were offering useful advice to those

here can you go for a birthday treat with a child whose birthday it is three days before Christmas? It has got to be indoors, as it’s freezing in December. It can’t involve Santa, elves or reindeer- otherwise it isn’t a birthday treat. Where to go…?

These diary pages are the heart of The Scallywag, the main reason the magazine exists and probably the most useful part as far as parents and carers are concerned. We aim to list all the activities available for 0 - 5 year olds in the area. We do our best to ensure the information is kept up-to-date (there will probably
be some changes to every issue). However we are not infallible. If you know of any changes to existing entries, or of any new groups or courses that should be included, please get in touch by using any of the contact details on page 3. Listing in this section is FREE.

out & about Brockholes Nature Reserve
F
inding activities to do and places to visit always seem harder during the February Half-term. It’s always weather- and lightdependent! Days can still seem very short as darkness and night-time is upon us before we are leaving the house.
We thought we would try Brockholes Nature Reserve for a morning excursion. Armed with plenty of warm layers of clothing (plus spares for muddy accidents) and an essential flask of hot chocolate plus (healthy and unhealthy) snacks, we set off. We tend to get to places early, to avoid the crowds, however I couldn’t believe how quick it was to get there, so we were one of the first families there. It took about 30 minutes to drive as it’s situated just at the side of the M6 motorway within a mile of Junction 31. It’s very well signposted and easy to find. Brockholes is regarded as one of the best sites in the UK to observe many species of bird and boasts one of the largest strips of ancient woodland in the country. It is managed by the Wildlife
Trust for Lancashire, Manchester & North Merseyside, who are part of the Wildlife Trusts, the UK’s leading conservation charity. Since opening in 2011, it has played host to over 200,000 visitors; the sightseers are growing as Brockholes becomes an increasingly diverse nature reserve, with a wider (and ever growing) variety of wildlife. There is no charge for entrance, however you do have to pay for parking (which is a reasonable fee). A camera records your car registration number as you enter the Nature Reserve and before you leave you must pay what is due at one of the many pay machines. Beware; if you do not, a formal parking fine notice of £50.00 will be issued. A possible benefit of visiting Brockholes (which may be a disadvantage for some) is that no dogs are allowed, as dogs can disturb the wildlife there, especially nesting birds. All walks and trails begin from the floating Visitor Village, which features a café, an interactive Welcome Centre (the place to collect your Welcome leaflet and Reserve map) and of course a gift shop. As Brockholes is run as a not-for-profit organisation, any profits made are ploughed back into helping look after and further develop the Reserve and protect the wildlife that visits there. They also have various events happening throughout the holidays, so it’s well worth keeping an eye on, as I understand that the events get booked up quickly. There are a number of walking trails to choose from, including the Gravel Pit path (approximately 30 minutes to walk), which is suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs
(plus good for younger ones with little legs). There is also a Meadow Trail and a complete Reserve Trail, estimated to take approximately 2 hours. We chose the Meadow Trail (about 1 hours walking) as this cleverly encompasses a good sized play area and equipment for children of all ages. (Including the always popular zip-wire and assault course)! There are lots of picnic tables and benches scattered around, this allows you to walk or amble and enjoy the experience at your own family’s pace. Also, I would say, that although it was a nippy February morning, I think it would be windy and chilly throughout most times or the year; as the land is so open to the elements. Also, the floating Visitor Village is a great place to explore, but as it floats on water, you will need to keep an extra beady eye on the little ones. The two hours we spent there went so fast for us we are planning on going again at Easter time or when the sun is shining. We’d love to see more wildlife and to fully explore the Reserve, so I think that Brockholes is going to become a firm holiday-time favourite. We just have to always remember our gloves! school news

Is there a Bookworm in your house?
o mark the recent World Book day a new initiative has been announced to help improve reading standards in primary schools, including new funding for book clubs. Government figures show that one in five children still leaves primary school unable to read at a standard that will ensure they are well placed to succeed at secondary school - representing thousands of pupils who are leaving primary school underprepared. In an attempt to address this, the Department for Education has recently published a new plan, aimed at schools, for further emphasis on reading.
‘Reading: the next steps’: • Is a new programme to support primary schools, where reading attainment at Key Stage 2 is currently too low. It will encourage the setting up of book clubs and promote library membership, to try to inspire thousands more pupils to develop a love of literature. • Will urge all primary schools to arrange library membership for all their Year 3 pupils (age 7 to 8). • Will try to boost the promotion of poetry in schools by funding new resources to help primary teachers to introduce poetry recitation to their pupils at an early age.
The measures outlined are designed to build and help primary schools drive up literacy standards across England. By promoting and encouraging book clubs and libraries, it is hoped it will give children the chance to discuss the books they have read in a nonclassroom setting, and to develop their love of literature through discovering new authors and new stories. The programme, which the government will be inviting organisations to tender for, will offer information and advice to any school interested in running a book club.
So, if there isn’t a Bookworm in your house now, maybe you can discover one? For further information please visit www.gov.uk

focus on:
Running? It’s the parkrun Spirit!
So if you like running, you may have already heard by now of the growing free running event organised by parkrun. Started over ten years ago by Paul Sinton-Hewitt and a few friends, it now attracts 80,000 people, meeting at 9.00am each Saturday, in 280 parks nationwide. They organise regular junior events too. We thought we would find out more. When Paul Sinton-Hewitt first started the Bushy Park Time Trial (which would later become Bushy parkrun) back in 2004, he did not expect that there could be any other events in the UK, let alone around the world. Parkrun is a not-for-profit organisation that helps to establish and manage, weekly, 5km timed runs. The events are open to anyone; they are safe and free to take part in. The weekly runs take place in pleasant parkland surroundings and people of all ability are encouraged to take part, from those taking their first steps in running, to Olympians; from juniors to those with more experience; all are welcome. Another aim of parkrun is to have an event in every community that wants one and they are more than happy to work with people who want to set up and manage an event. The local parkrun for Rossendale is
held at Towneley Park, Burnley, and it isn’t just for adults. For juniors, there are a series of 2km runs for children aged between 4 and 14. The Burnley parkrun is organised and managed entirely by volunteers.
So what happens?
It is a 5km run- you simply run against the clock – it’s not a race. People of all ages join in and run for their own enjoyment, whatever their pace.
What does it cost to join in?
Nothing - it’s free! However, you must register at least once with parkrun through their website and then remember to take with you a printed copy of your personal barcode number; without it you will not get an official time.
What do I have to wear?
There is no dress code, no race numbers and no need for expensive equipment. So we spoke to someone who does it. Mia Howorth, age 9, has been running with parkrun for two years. She usually takes part in the 5 K at Towneley Park in Burnley on a Saturday morning. Her first run took 39 minutes but one of the benefits of regular running is improving your time and she can now complete this distance in 32 minutes. Mia likes the fact that she completes
Mia Howorth in her 10 Park Runs t-shirt having ju st finished the run at Towneley Pa rk. the run on Saturday morning and still has the rest of the day free for other activities. She also likes being able to look at her Personal Profile on the parkrun website. This records her times, including her personal best, gender position in her age group of runners and the number of runs she has completed. Mia’s Mum, Barbara, speaks highly of parkrun. Her first comment was how safe the runs are and how well organised they are. Every child under the age of 11 has to have an adult accompany them on the run and the course is marshalled well. Barbara says that Mia has been motivated by the “milestone t-shirts” and enjoys the fun of running with friends in a non-pressured event. If running is for you and your family, then the weekly organised parkruns will no doubt be an opportunity for you all to spend some quality time together, whether running or volunteering to help. The focus of parkrun is definitely on fun, enjoyment and friendship. By T Sunderland & J Boon

veryone knows that running is free; you can do it anywhere, and it burns more calories than any other mainstream exercise. The health benefits of regular running can help reduce your risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke. It can also boost your mood and keep your weight under control. It’s not surprising that running is the latest fitness craze.

family health A Q & A guide to help you and your children enjoy
H
trouble-free teeth …..For life!
ere’s how you and your children can have healthy teeth and keep trips to the dentist to a minimum. Establishing good habits can help your child avoid oral health problems, such as tooth decay and gum disease. So here are some answers to the most common dental questions. Can I let my child have sweets?
Most children want sweets, but you can help prevent problems by making sure they don’t have a large amount or very often, and particularly not before bed, when saliva flow reduces. Try not to give sweets or sweet drinks as rewards.
What are the best snacks to give my child?
The best snacks are fruit and raw vegetables. Try tangerines, bananas, pieces of cucumber or carrot sticks. Other good snacks include toast, rice cakes and plain popcorn. Dried fruit is a concentrated source of sugar and tends to stick to teeth, so only give it occasionally as a snack to children.
Should I let my child have fizzy drinks?
Fizzy drinks can contain large amounts of sugar, which will increase the risk of tooth decay. All fizzy drinks (both those containing sugar and sugar-free or “diet” versions) also contain acids that can erode the outer surface of the tooth.
What are the best drinks for my child’s teeth? The best drinks for children over one year old are plain still water or plain milk. Cow’s milk is not suitable as a drink for babies under 12 months of age. Your child should have full-fat milk (whole milk) from the age of 12 months to two years. Semi-skimmed milk can be introduced from the age of two, as long as your child is a good eater and growing well for their age. Skimmed milk can be given to children aged five and over.
Is it OK to drink fruit juice?
Even unsweetened juices contain sugars and acids, so although it can contribute towards your 5 A DAY, try to not let them drink no more than one glass (about 150ml) of fruit juice each day
22
and only at mealtimes. If your child is thirsty, it’s better to give them water than to encourage a taste for sweet drinks.
Will milk at bedtime damage my child’s teeth?
Teeth are at most risk at night because there is less saliva in the mouth to protect them. Water is the best drink to give at bedtime, but if you do give milk, don’t add anything to it. Chocolate-flavoured drinks and milkshake powder usually contain sugars, which will increase the risk of decay.
Are sugar-free medicines better for my child’s teeth? Yes. Always ask if a sugar-free medicine is available and remind your doctor about this if you’re being given a prescription for your child. This is especially important if your child is taking long-term medication.
When should my child give up bottles?
Your child should begin moving off the bottle and on to a free-flow feeder cup at six months. Bottles should be given up completely by the age of one because the teats and spouts encourage children to suck for long periods of time, which can mean the drinks that cause tooth decay stay in contact with your child’s teeth for a long time.
Are sippy cups good for teeth? There’s no need for a child to use a sippy cup. These are similar to a bottle, in that they require the child to suck to make them work. A free-flow feeder cup is better as it doesn’t have valves and the flow of liquid is unrestricted. This means children learn to drink normally rather than by sucking.
For more information please visit www.nhs.uk
Will a dummy or thumb sucking harm my child’s teeth? No, but they will encourage an open bite, which is when teeth move to make space for the dummy or thumb. They may also affect speech development. That’s why you should avoid using dummies after 12 months of age. Thumb sucking and dummies won’t cause permanent problems as long as the habit stops by the time your child gets their second teeth, but it can be a hard habit to break. Discourage your children from talking or making sounds with their thumb or a dummy in their mouth, and don’t dip dummies in anything sweet, such as sugar or jam.
What is fluoride varnish?
Fluoride varnish can be applied to baby teeth and adult teeth. It involves painting a varnish containing high levels of fluoride on to the surface of the tooth about every six months to prevent decay. It works by strengthening tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay. From the age of three, children should be offered fluoride varnish twice a year. Younger children may also be offered this treatment if your dentist thinks they need it.
