Welcome

Welcome To The Autumn 2018 edition of The Scallywag magazine for Rossendale Yet another year has flown past and the Autumn school term is upon us and in full swing… Already! Have those new expensive school shoes been scuffed yet? Ours have! Have school jumpers been lost yet? Ours have!!! Quickly moving on, welcome to this Autumn issue. We hope you all had a good summer break; a distant memory no doubt. Many thanks for your kind words of support we received concerning the change of look, we really do appreciate them. In the Out & About sections, we feature two very different but enjoyable days out. One is to the Martin Mere Wetland Centre in Burscough and the other, to the People’s History Museum in Manchester. Both places worth a visit, especially with the half-term break coming up.

Back by popular demand is our feature about primary school admissions in Lancashire, aimed at parents of three-tofour year olds, focussing on applying for a place on-line using the Lancashire County Council website. This article explains about the on-line procedure but, more importantly, gives the key dates for submission of forms - don’t miss the deadline! It is supported by adverts from some of our local schools in Rossendale; without their contribution The Scallywag magazine could not be distributed free of charge. Once again, I thank friends, readers, contributors and advertisers alike for your support and loyalty. We really couldn’t do this without you!

Caring the Julie Way

W

hen a child comes to ‘Julies’ they become a part of our family, our two children feel like they have had many siblings over the years. Each child

holds a special place in our hearts. Our welcoming homely environment allows our little ones and their families to relax and feel safe in the knowledge we are caring for them like they were our own. They will be nurtured according to their own uniqueness. We are dedicated to providing enriching experiences with compassion and care. The setting is not one of four walls, our children experience off-site daily outings to our local farm, parks, walks, local library, groups of play, dance, signing, mark-making, messy play and much more. Despite years of training and experience my team and I continually develop our childcare knowledge. We are proud that Ofsted has recognised us with an Outstanding rating, but this is just the tip of what we offer. The EYFS framework forms the basis of our curriculum but we have added our own goals, happiness, laughter, friendship and love. It really is caring the Julie way!

Rossendale Markets Take a fresh look at Rawtenstall Market!

I

f you haven’t visited the Rawtenstall market recently, then pop down and take a look!

There has never been a more important time to shop local and support these independent retailers. By supporting these small entrepreneurs we can help our community create jobs. Research shows that £10 spent with a local independent retailer means up to an additional £50 goes back into the local economy. Plus, these Valley-based businesses are run by people, not by boards, stockholders or algorithms, and you just can’t beat the personal touch. Rawtenstall is very fortunate to have a covered market hall behind the roadside stalls and with its own free car park. It’s a real bonus of having these small pockets of originality and individuality all housed in one convenient place. Who knows where your support for these traders might lead? As the old saying goes, ‘Mighty oaks from little acorns grow’. The market allows these retailers a chance to get their company started; a first foot in the door of business with very low overheads, no tied-in leases and special offers on stall charges – all whilst bringing new product lines to our community. So they are definitely worth encouraging. Alongside the traditional market favourites of fresh and cooked meats, fresh fish, cheese, fruit and vegetables, plants, clothing and cafés, Rawtenstall Market is home to some unique and specialist stalls, like a haberdashery shop with extensive craft supplies or a dancewear boutique that works closely with local dance schools; as well as cake decoration and supplies stall that I’m sure Mary Berry would love to browse around. There are also some exciting and varied new traders such as a Breton patisserie cooking fresh croissants on site and a Thai takeaway. Let’s not forget the handy kiosks specialising in key cutting and tool sharpening or greetings cards and clothes alterations. And the famous sweet stall definitely needs a special mention! In a nutshell, Rawtenstall Market offers a real wealth of goods and services just not available from big supermarkets. So come on let’s use it, not lose it!

E

veryone knows that running is free; you can do it anywhere, and it burns more calories than any other mainstream exercise. The health benefits of regular running can help reduce your risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke. It can also boost your mood and keep your weight under control.

So if you like running, you may have already heard by now of the growing free running event organised by parkrun. Started fourteen years ago by Paul Sinton-Hewitt and a few friends, there are now over five million people signed up to the Parkrun website which regularly attracts 80,000 people, meeting at 9.00am every Saturday, in over 280 parks nationwide. Parkrun is a not-forprofit organisation that helps to establish and manage, weekly, 5km timed runs. The events are open to anyone, they are safe and free to take part in. The local parkrun for Rossendale is held at Towneley Park, Burnley, and it isn’t just for adults. For juniors there are a series of 2km runs aimed at children aged between 4 and 14. The Burnley parkrun is organised and managed entirely by volunteers.

So what happens? It is a 5km runyou simply run against the clock – it’s not a race. People of all ages join in and run for the sheer pleasure and their ability to challenge themselves, whatever their pace. What does it cost to join in? Nothing - it’s free! However, you must register at least once with parkrun through their website and then remember to take with you a printed copy of your personal barcode number as without it you will not get an official time. What do I have to wear? There is no dress code, no race numbers and no need for expensive equipment. If running is for you and your family, then the weekly organised parkruns will no doubt be an opportunity for you all to spend some quality time together, whether running or volunteering to help. The focus of parkrun is definitely fun, enjoyment and friendship. Useful contacts: www.parkrun.org.uk burnleyhelpers@parkrun.com

ildlife, and especially birds, are not really what the children are into. That’s the truth. The thought of bird-watching (in my mind it means being quiet and standing still for hours on end waiting for our feathered friends to appear on a distant tree branch) did not exactly conjure up a good day out. However, listening to the radio and David Attenborough back in July, telling me that, ‘Watching butterflies is good for you!’ I decided that it was time to step out of our comfort zone and go to a Wetland Centre to look at birds and count butterflies.

Out & About

Martin Mere Wetland Centre The Martin Mere Wetland Centre is a nature reserve managed by The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust which is a conservation charity that essentially saves wetlands. As an area, Martin Mere was formed at the end of the last Ice Age and until it was drained, was the largest body of fresh water in England. Part of this old mere is now the site of the Wetland Centre. Since 1946 The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust has been encouraging and developing the connection we have with nature through these beautiful areas. They have carefully designed and managed these reserves so that not only can endangered wildlife be saved, but allowed to flourish. This is one of ten Wetland Centres dotted around the UK and was opened in 1975. On arrival, you can see that the Centre is very well laid out and managed. There is a notice board which you are directed to (and encouraged to take a mobile picture of) that has written on it all the times and events that are due to happen at the Centre that day, for example, flamingo and otter feeding times. This makes it so much easier to

plan your stay here as there are over 400 acres to wander around. We also purchased an essential pack of seed to feed the birds with. One pack was enough for the whole visit. Then we began to wander and wander and wander. There are paths and trails around the Centre that take you into large pens filled with various species of birds, although many of these areas are so large that you do not realise that you are walking between fenced areas. You really do get very close to the birds and some are so tame and gentle enough, that they like to feed seed from your hand. Staff and helpers are nearby to give advice and further information. There is a specific area set aside from the more public trails for the professional ‘twitcher’ to do their observing; there are also a number of bird hides dotted around the Wetland Centre which are open to all. Plus, there is a large lake to wander around that also offers boat trips and canoe safaris. There is a children’s arts and crafts section and to burn off any excess energy there is a large, well-stocked play area, with a zip wire and cold water

fountain (very popular on the day we went). Needless to say there are plenty of places to eat a picnic or stop for a snack or just stop…. We went for day trip out here during the summer, however this is a great venue for any season. This is nature at its very best as the Wetland landscape and wildlife is constantly changing. In fact, the winter season is supposed to be the best time of year to visit as it is a marvellous opportunity to view huge flocks of migrating birds. There really is something for everyone here, no matter what the time of year is, how old they are and what their level of interest in wildlife is. As part of our ‘Welcome pack’ we were given a butterfly hunt sheet and we were encouraged to go and search then record our findings on the number of varieties we could find. And this is what we did, just like David Attenborough had told me to. And I think he’s right. We did feel good at the end of the day, tired and certainly a lot more connected with nature. Do Your Thing For Pudsey

BC Children in Need has launched its 2018 fundraising campaign and is asking people across the UK to channel their passions, hobbies or dreams and Do Your Thing to help change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK ahead of the charity’s 39th Appeal show on Friday 16 November.

An incredible star studded line-up of famous faces have come together to support the Do Your Thing campaign, from rambles to knit-a-thons, three-legged races to once in a lifetime challenges, bake sales or baths of beans, everyone can channel their passions into fundraising for BBC Children in Need. Simon Antrobus, Chief Executive at BBC Children in Need said: “Year after year we never fail to be amazed by the incredible efforts of supporters up and down the UK going above and beyond to help change young lives. Whatever you do, whether it is a day spent in fancy dress, run, cycle,

bake or ramble with friends, it really will help us give children and young people the childhood they deserve.” BBC Children in Need’s official 2018 fundraising pack is available for download now from bbc.co.uk/pudsey and is bursting with ideas to inspire Do Your Thing fundraising ahead of the 39th Appeal show on Friday 16 November. To date the Great British public has raised over £972 million for children and young people across the UK and the charity is calling on people to once again pull out all the stops and help make a difference!

How To Apply For A Primary School Place

I

f your child was born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015 they will usually start primary school in September 2019. Each year around this time we try to outline the important information to help guide you along the way. Although the closing date for the process is Tuesday 15th January 2019, it’s a good idea to start thinking about it now. Lancashire has an on-line admission application system. Full versions of the prospectus and application form are viewable and downloadable via both the on-line application system and the County Council website.

First things first:

You will need to enter three different schools - your first, second and third school preferences. If you need advice; contact our local Area Education Office situated in Accrington on 01254 220711 or 01254 220714. Before you apply, research the schools in your local area. It is always best to include a school near to where you live as one of your preferred options. Demand for school places in some parts if Rossendale is high and this could help towards you being offered a local school. Your nearest school for admission purposes is measured by a straight line.

Read the information for parents:

Find out more details about the admission criteria and process in the Information for Parents 2019 to 2020 on-line document. You also need to read the admissions policy booklet relevant to our area.

More information may be needed:

If any of your preferences are for a voluntary aided (church) school, a foundation school, an academy or a free school they may require you to complete a Supplementary Information Form (SIF). Please contact the school directly to find out about the admission criteria.

When you’ll find out:

You will be informed of your official offer of a primary school place by email during working hours on 15 April 2018, you will also be able to check online. If you need more information you Please be aware you need to apply can contact the Admissions team in for a place at a primary school, even if Accrington, also the Customer Access it’s linked to your child’s nursery, or your Centre on 0300 123 6707 Monday to child’s brother or sister is already at the Friday 8am to 5pm. Email enquiries can school. be sent to enquiries@lancashire.gov.uk

17

Filling in the application form:

If you registered online in previous years (before 1 September 2018) you will need to re-register as Lancashire County Council is using a new system. To complete the form you will need the following information: • A valid email address - this is the address they will use to confirm your application and the school place you will be offered in April 2018. • Your name, address and telephone number. • The forename, surname and date of birth of the child. • The child’s permanent address (if different from the parent/guardian applying). • The names of your first, second and third school preferences. • Details of brothers or sisters who will be attending one or more of the schools you are applying to when the younger child starts in September. • If the child receives care, you need the name of the Local Care Authority that is respon-sible for this care and the child’s social worker. • You will need to choose your own user ID, this must be must be 6-16 characters long and contain letters and numbers only. You will also need to choose a password. When you have completed your form fully it will show as complete. You can log back in to your application form to check the information you’ve already given and to add more if you need to; if you do change it, just make sure you resubmit. You can change your completed online application at any point before the closing date.

Good Luck!

Allocation Of School Places

W

hen you apply for a school place in Rossendale, you are advised to list three schools. The school that you name as your highest preference would normally be the one you really want. The admission policy for each school is applied to your child’s application along with all the other applications for the same school. At this stage, it doesn’t matter whether you have listed the school as preference 1, 2 or 3, all applications are considered equally against each school’s policy. It is where your child is placed within that policy that counts. All applicants for each school are put into order according to the criteria in that school’s policy. Places at the school are filled in order up to the published admission number. The answer for each preference will either be a yes (place available) or no (place not available). If more than one school can offer a place, then the order of preferences will be considered. Only one offer will be given, this will be the highest of those that can offer a place. If none of the schools preferred can offer a place, an allocation will be made to a school that does have one.

Health

Let’s Talk About Mental Wellbeing

C

urrently the statistics for developing a mental health condition in this country are 1 in 4. How many of your children, grandchildren, god-children, nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters would that potentially affect? It’s a scary statistic, but imagine if you were able to support children in ways that don’t change family life and don’t cost the earth? Or imagine ways that children can support their own well-being. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking:

Connect

One of the hardest things to do as a parent is to slow down and find the time to talk and listen with our children, no matter what age. Shared mealtimes, fewer hours in front of the TV and family activities will help support your child’s wellbeing. Good relationships are important for our mental wellbeing. Building stronger, wider social connections can help us feel happier and give us a greater sense of purpose. • Arrange a day out with friends you haven’t seen in a while. • Encourage children to meet ups with friends rather than speaking to them by phone or online. • If you live far apart from family or friends use technology, such as Skype, to keep in touch with them.

Give to Others

What can you and your children do to make the world a better place? This isn’t about giving things away or spending money, kindness is about doing something for someone else, however small, even if it doesn’t benefit you. • Encourage them to do a chore for a family member. • Suggest they are friendly to a shopkeeper and ask then what they’re doing at the weekend. • Ask them to tidy their bedroom and get some things ready to donate to charity. • Show them how to help someone who is struggling with their bags.

Be Active

Young people need a range of opportunities to be active, both indoors and out. These can be as straightforward as running, skipping, cycling or swimming, all of which are great at improving strength, balance, fitness and concentration. Find an activity that you enjoy as a family and make it part of your life. • Walk or cycle to places with the kids instead of driving them. • Seek out a local outdoor park. • Encourage children to join a team, but help them recognise that you don’t have to be the star of the team to take part!

Be Mindful

Take notice. Sometimes our heads can get so full of information and confused that we need to take time to focus on simple things. Mindfulness is about using all of you 5 senses to really take in what is happening around you. Here’s a great technique to try with children when brushing their teeth - you can even try it too! Think about: • How the toothpaste tastes. • What it feels like to have the bristles of the toothbrush in your mouth. • What sounds the brush is making on your teeth • What the difference is between before and after you’ve cleaned your teeth. Thinking about one thing, the thing that you are doing and nothing else, will help you feel more relaxed.

19

Keep Learning

Children are naturally imaginative and creative. They can take an object and discover a hundred different uses for it, invent an entire character to be their imaginary friend or produce a masterpiece of modern art with just a crayon! As Kate Badger, founder of Academy of FUN!, says; “Learning isn’t just about going to school. School will teach you what you need to know but what’s really exciting is learning the stuff that you want to know!” Get the imagination going: • Encourage your child to learn to play a musical instrument. • Teach them to juggle! • Explore how things fly by learning about birds or making an aeroplane.

Children are natural learners, we just need to try and make their world as large as possible, by filling it with new experiences, cultures and ideas. Wellbeing plays a central role in creating flourishing communities. Let’s work together to inspire the next generation. By Christopher Saint

Facts About Flu And The Flu Vaccine

T

here are many myths surrounding flu and the flu vaccine. So here are the facts. The flu vaccine is available on the NHS for adults and children who are considered “at risk”, as well as children aged 2 to 9 years old on August 31 2018.

Flu is much worse than a heavy cold Flu symptoms come on suddenly and sometimes severely. They include fever, chills, headaches and aching muscles, as well as a cough and sore throat. You’re likely to spend two or three days in bed. The flu vaccine can’t give you flu The injected flu vaccine given to adults contains inactivated flu viruses, so it can’t give you flu. Your arm may feel a bit sore where you were injected, and some people get a slight temperature and aching muscles for a couple of days afterwards. The children’s nasal spray flu vaccine contains live but weakened flu viruses that will not give your child flu. Flu can’t be treated with antibiotics Flu is caused by viruses – antibiotics only work against bacteria. You may be prescribed antiviral medicines to treat your flu. Antivirals do not cure flu, but they can make you less infectious to others and reduce the length of time you may be ill. You need to have the flu vaccine every year The viruses that cause flu can change every year, so you need a vaccination that matches the new viruses each year. The vaccine usually provides protection for the duration of that year’s flu season.

RAWTENSTALL • 01706 830 671 26 Newchurch Road, Rawtenstall, BB4 7QX kipmcgrath.co.uk/rawtenstall

20

Children can have the flu vaccine The nasal spray flu vaccine is recommended on the NHS for all healthy 2- and 3-year-olds – plus children in reception class, and school years 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. In addition, children “at risk” of serious illness if they catch flu are eligible for a flu vaccine on the NHS. The flu vaccine is generally given as an injection to children aged 6 months to 2 years and as a nasal spray to children aged 2 to 17 years who have a long-term health condition. The flu vaccine isn’t suitable for babies under the age of 6 months. It’s not too late to have the flu vaccine in November You should take up the offer of the flu vaccine when it becomes available, with the best time to have it from the beginning of October to the end of November. People’s History Museum

Y

es... another review about yet another museum. But no... it’s a review about a VERY interesting and brilliant museum that (in their own words) has perception issues. So please read on with an open mind!

When I suggested visiting the People’s History Museum in the summer break, my children were less than enthusiastic. However I had read the great reviews and thought it sounded out of the ordinary and worth a visit. Entry is free, although donations are kindly accepted. I thought, if the worst comes to the worst, the Museum is bound to have a gift shop and sell ice cream, plus we will be close by to other Manchester City Centre attractions, so all three children’s tastes and interests will be catered for. The PHM is the National Museum of Democracy. Essentially it tells the story of how democracy developed in Britain, how things were in the past, how they are in the present, and where it is heading into the future. Opened in 2010, it is one of only two national museums in Manchester and displays almost 1,500 historic objects. There is also an opportunity to look behind the scenes into their conservation studio. Interestingly, the PHM attracts over 100,000 visitors a year with a high proportion of those being foreign visitors. So, it is a Museum about the ideas that individuals and groups (past and present) believe are worth fighting for, outlining their stories and their achievements. There is a varied collection of inspiring narratives; women getting the vote, the Co-operative movement, the Toll Puddle Martyrs, the unfair Corn Laws, to name but a few important struggles that are covered. There is a range of exhibits on display including writing, art, banners, audio and video sources. They are well laid out and divided into pre-1945 and post-1945 rooms. The high standard of interactive exhibits really helped, especially with the younger children. Even the descriptions

21

of the displays were good, hitting the right level of complexity without being patronising (with handy explanations and definitions of ‘difficult’ words, I’m pleased to say). Younger children can dress up, there are art activities to get involved in, there is a Co-op shop to play in and even an opportunity to choose ‘workers’ tunes to play on an old juke box. For really young children, there are little rucksacks available to be borrowed at Reception that have dressing up clothes inside and accessories like binoculars to use around the museum and keys to help open doors or look in drawers. As we were going round, the number of questions that were fired at me clearly indicated that the children were as interested in it all as I was. It’s no wonder the PHM has been voted a ‘Family Friendly Museum’ in 2017, an award where families pick the winners; they were one of just 10 winners from 700 nominations! The café has good reviews however, as usual, we took a picnic. Even the picnic eating area was great; right in the middle of the museum, not hidden away in a cold damp room. Overall the facilities were very good. We spent a good couple of hours here as we were really drawn into learning about the lives of fascinating people and the events in which they were involved. We all came away more knowledgeable and frankly, inspired by all the brave men and women who have fought for their beliefs, for justice and equality for everyone. The PHM brought to life British social history; not just to me but all of us. If you have younger children your visit may only last for an hour or so however, I bet it will be a place that you will return to again. I know we will. By Tracey Sunderland

he Red Box Project Rossendale is a community driven project that aims to ensure that no young woman misses out on her education because of her period. They ask the community to donate sanitary products at drop-off points across Rossendale, so that they can fill their Red Boxes and place them in schools for young women to access, aiming to reach those who may not be able to afford these vital items. They are currently working with all of the high schools in Rossendale and eleven primary schools. There are fifteen permanent donation points located within Rossendale and the initiative is currently one of the causes that can be voted for at Asda Rawtenstall as part of their Green Token Scheme. So how can you help? Firstly, they need donations of sanitary towels, tampons and underwear. Occasionally they are asked for deodorant, face wipes and tights too, so these are always welcome. Secondly, although they don’t need any more donation points – the current ones are enough to ensure they are a sustainable project - they are now at a point where they can offer the boxes to ALL of the schools in the Rossendale area. So if you work in a school and are interested in receiving one of our Red Boxes, please get in touch. They would love to hear from you and they would love to help! Have You Ever Wondered…

W

hy all the plants in Rawtenstall looked so good in such a dry summer? If you have hanging baskets, window boxes or even flower beds in your garden you’ll know what a struggle it was to keep them alive, keeping them blooming was even more difficult! In addition to 14 Rawtenstall gardens, and now a train on the main roundabout, Civic Pride looks after 34 barrier baskets and 12 hanging baskets all of which needed watering several times a week. In Spring 2017 they fitted out their van with a watering system holding 50 gallons of water which by using an electric pump allowed teams of 2 people to work on 2 hour rotas so that over a period of about 6/8 hours everything could be watered. Then came the threat of a hosepipe ban! Wanting to be good citizens but not wishing to let thousands of plants die, they used a submersible pump to draw water straight from the rivers! With permission to draw up to 20 cu m a day the problem was solved. When the rain returned, one might be forgiven for thinking they were no

longer needed but the leaves tend to channel the water away from the baskets which led to an email from one of the team members, ‘Whilst watering the barrier baskets in torrential rain this morning, a van pulled up and two men in white coats got out and walked purposefully towards us. They then spotted the Civic Pride livery on our van and one turned to the other and said, “That explains it!” At which point they drove off!’ Civic Pride (Rossendale) volunteers work tirelessly to remove litter, educate youngsters about its dangers and restore and maintain community gardens including the banking opposite ASDA. To maintain the hanging and barrier baskets alone costs over £4000 per year. Please help us do even more and join the Civic Pride Rossendale community.
