Welcome

Welcome To

The Autumn ‘19 edition of The Scallywag magazine for Rossendale

Y

et again the year is flying by and not only has another school year started but half-term is upon us ….Already!

Back by popular demand is our feature about primary school admissions in Lancashire, aimed at parents of three-to-four year olds, focussing on applying for a place on-line using the Lancashire County Council website. This article explains about the on-line procedure, but, more importantly, gives the key dates for submission of forms - don’t miss the deadline! It is supported by adverts from some of our local schools in Rossendale, please take note of their input; without their contribution The Scallywag magazine could not be distributed free of charge. Once again, I thank friends, readers, contributors and advertisers alike for your support and loyalty. I really couldn’t do this without you!

Let’s not mention how many weeks it is before Christmas and ignore the variety boxes of chocolates and mince pies now available for sale in our local supermarkets. Without further rambling, welcome to this Autumn issue. In this Out & About section we have a feature on visiting Crosby Beach and Sir Antony Gormley’s art installation ‘Another Place’. Seeing a hundred figures dotted along a stretch of beach all facing the sea, is stunning but eerie. And Hatch, Manchester’s award-winning food, drink and retail destination located under the Mancunian Way on Oxford Road.

t Little Kickers the focus is very much on fun. Based at the Adrenaline Centre, Haslingden, Karen and Andy Smith offer informal, yet professionally run, football training classes. They see it as an opportunity for enthusiastic boys and girls (from 18 months to 7th birthday) to be given a helping hand to stand on their own two feet! Company Director Karen says, “Of course we believe that a head start in sport is a fantastic investment in the future and naturally we’d be pleased as punch if any of our former pupils go on to greater glories in the golden game. However, Little Kickers is not a guaranteed passport to football fame. The real goal of Little Kickers is to use football as a fun forum to instil in children a little extra confidence, coordination, control and sense of camaraderie, which we feel will stand them in very good stead for the future.” Guided by the likes of FA qualified coaches, nursery school teachers, child health specialists and proactive parents, the overall mission of the Little Kickers programme is an ever-evolving quest to teach fundamental football techniques and elementary life skills in a vibrant group play environment. Invaluable social skills like listening, sharing, taking turns and teamwork are conscientiously woven into an involving programme that places as much emphasis on simple learning concepts, like colours and numbers, as it does on fine-tuning a child’s basic balance, agility and coordination. Each of their football classes are tailored to a different age group, so that the children are learning whilst playing the imaginative football games without even realising it. So learning becomes a ball!

Classes available in Haslingden

First Choice, a Good Choice!

redit unions aim to help you take control of your money by encouraging you to save what you can, and borrow only what you can afford to repay. In essence, they’re savings and loan co-operatives, where the members pool their savings to lend to one another and help to run the credit union. This is done in a ‘not-for-profit’ way, so the cash is only used to run the services and reward the members, and not to pay outside shareholders, like most other financial institutions. First Choice Credit Union was registered in 1993 and opened its offices in Haslingden and Rawtenstall in 1995. To be eligible to join you must live or work in the Common Bond area which includes Rossendale and surrounding areas. Accounts are available for Juniors up to the age of 16 years, as well as for

adults, however to be eligible for a loan you must be 18 years or over. Membership is £3.00 and you will need at least £5.00 to deposit into your account and then you can access all the union’s services of savings and loans. Members can open savings, Christmas or holiday savings accounts to help them with their budgeting through the year. Loans applications of up to £15,000 are accepted from members and family loans

are also available. Contact the office on 01706 215082 for more information or visit the website www.firstchoicecu.net or facebook page. First Choice Credit Union is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) which is the same as every high street bank or building society. The credit union is also a member of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

¡Hola from Montse! ontse Gales is a Spanish teacher who just loves her

job. And it’s all about the lovely people

she meets. Coming from all walks of life, from young to mature students up to the age of 80 years old, these enthusiastic students are all eager to learn Spanish and try their best.

From experience, Montse knows that people become students learning Spanish for different motives. She says, “My students go on holiday to Spain, some have relatives who have married a Spanish speaker, some join to make new friends and some enjoy the proven benefits of keeping the mind active.” There are lots of good reasons to join one of the courses. The Beginners Course provides a basic introduction to the Spanish language that helps students to communicate with native speakers, who, Montse confirms, really do appreciate your effort. Then there are follow-up courses for those who want to improve their skills. Montse goes on to say that, “It is a rewarding job to see how the students progress and how their confidence grows. I believe that in order to learn well, people have to be relaxed, happy and in a friendly environment. This

is what I strive to achieve from my initial sessions. I know each person learns at a different pace but I do encourage all learners to support each other and work as a team. That way everybody works together towards the same goals.” She works hard to ensure her sessions are filled with different teaching methods to incorporate the individual learning needs of the students and, most importantly, to make the sessions fun and enjoyable. These methods can include visual presentations, role play, reading, writing and games. Students are provided with the valuable opportunity to learn about the Spanish culture and its traditions which Montse believes is one of the most important and vital components included within the process of learning a new language. Montse looks forward to sharing your company and helping you to learn Spanish.

Out & About

Hatch

H

atch is a new food, drink and retail destination in Manchester. Situated under the Mancunian Way in shipping containers it is an unusual, but definitely interesting and imaginative setting.

It is easy to find as the main entrance is directly from Oxford Street and as soon as you walk into Hatch it is impossible not to smile. The containers are grouped around a covered outside seating area. All the containers are occupied by over thirty independent traders which offer a huge variety of goods and services. The traders rotate so there may be different businesses each time you visit and there is availability for short term rentals. We particularly liked the Mindful Store, winner of this year’s Environmental category in the Alliance MBS “Venture Further 2019” awards. They stock sustainable products with full production history details and information about how these products can benefit our planet. We also liked Suzy Loves Milo. This is a business offering reworked and upcycled vintage clothing. For my husband and me, it was a bit of a memory lane trip looking at some of the items and obviously, if you remember it first

time around, you don’t wear it again! However, for Eliza, the redesigned and updated Nike top was a hit and reasonably priced too. There are also jewellery shops, a florist, a barbers and Sneaker Pharm, which is Manchester’s first drop off sneaker and handbag cleaning boutique. After shopping, it’s only natural to want to eat and drink. Again, the range of choice is huge : Greek street food, vegan, pan Asian, Vietnamese, which operates from an old double-decker bus, and more. We chose Mezze, a Cyprian food stall, and all thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. Lily had the turkish sausage and halloumi burger which came with fries and sauces. At £6.50 it was great value. Eliza had a butterfly chicken, rice, hummus and salad box which was enormous and worth its £7.50 cost. To accompany the food, you can choose from a brewery, cocktails, wine, milkshakes and more. What is nice is that your group can all buy from different food and drink traders, but then meet in the seating area to eat together. The majority of businesses are on ground / street level and this is fully DDA compliant with accessible, clean toilets. There is limited free street parking nearby or, alternatively, plenty of car parks in the vicinity. We spent about two hours at Hatch on our first visit and will definitely return. By Julia Boon

Out & About

W

hy am I suggesting that you visit a beach this time of year you may be asking? Well, with the half-term break soon to be upon us and with an optimistic eye on the weather forecast, on a fine dry day, this is a great place to really let the children let off steam, burn off excess energy and take in some culture. Plus, put simply - it’s cheap and it’s different!

Crosby Beach & ‘Another Place’

I had wanted to visit Crosby beach and see the ‘army’ of cast iron statues for some time now, but had never found the time. There always seemed other places to go until agreement could not be reached amongst my children as to where we should go and so I stepped in and took an executive decision on our destination for a day out. Before anyone could complain and pick up their electric gizmos, I had a picnic packed up, worked out a walking route and had the car keys in my hand. About 6 miles north of central Liverpool is Crosby Beach, which is the permanent home to the striking public artwork, Another Place, by world-famous British artist, Sir Antony Gormley. This is a piece of modern sculpture consisting of 100 castiron, life-size figures spread over 2 miles of windy coastline, all facing out to sea. They reach approximately 0.6 miles out into the water, being increasingly submerged and revealed as the tide comes in and goes out. Each figure is 6 ft 2 in tall, weighs 650kg and is made from casts of the artist’s

own body ; which makes for interesting conversations I promise you ! Where you park or start the walk here is up to you as the statutes are spread over a couple of miles. I chose to park in Crosby and paid £1.90 parking fee. There are free car parks to be found but they are busy. From here we walked through Crosby Park, via a trip to the toilet, and around a small boating lake before reaching the beach and the statutes. To see the figures all together is an impressive sight. As they are all at different positions on the beach and depending on the tide, some were in the sea and some were out. It looked very surreal. The tide was out quite a way, so we walked on the beach among the statues collecting shells and ‘playing’ football until we reached Waterloo and a conveniently parked ice-cream van. Crosby beach is clean and the sand firm enough to walk on ; in fact the beach has been awarded the Quality Coast Award by Keep Britain Tidy. Although beware of the

jellyfish – there seemed quite a few around on the day we went. We could have extended our walk to take in Hightown, Formby Beach and a nature reserve for red squirrels, but we decided on leaving that for another day. Instead we turned around and walked back along the promenade where the children had great fun playing in the high sand dunes which are alongside the beach. Some families had brought scooters and bikes to travel along the flat promenade, some had brought wellies to go digging in the sand (which can be quite muddy in places), some brought kites to take advantage of the windy conditions and some had even brought snow sledges to whizz down the dunes on. Fun on a beach with art! It’s as simple as that and you can tailor this day out to suit you, the weather and your children, plus the size of the boot of your car to fit everything in. I should take executive decisions more often! By Tracey Sunderland

Visiting Europe After Brexit

t the end of this month the UK will leave the European Union. At the time of writing we are heading towards a no-deal Brexit. This is a brief outline of what you need to do should you wish to travel to Europe.

Passports: check if you need to renew On the day of travel you must have a passport with a minimum of six months’ validity and crucially be less than 10 years old (even if it has 6 months or more left). As children’s passports were issued for a maximum of five years and nine months, they do not conflict with the EU’s 10-year maximum. These rules do not apply to travel to Ireland. You can continue to use your passport as long as it’s valid for the length of your stay.

Healthcare: check you’re covered You should always get appropriate travel insurance with healthcare cover before you go abroad. After Brexit your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) card may not be valid. Driving: You may need extra documents You’ll need an international driving permit (IDP) to drive in some countries. If you’re taking your own vehicle, you’ll also need a ‘green card’ - allow one month to get this from your vehicle insurance company and a GB sticker.

Inspiring Smiles!

A

fantastic bright and colourful new play area is inspiring the minds of the youngest children at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Bacup.

Before the school invested £21,500 in the equipment, the Reception class led on to a smaller sectioned-off area of yard that didn’t have any bike tracks, just a small hut and a sand and water tray. Reception teacher, Emma Duffy, said, “They would often just end up running around and although we had bikes there was nowhere for the children to properly ride them.” Now the area has been transformed. Reception pupil, Hannah, said, “In the mud kitchen I make cup cakes and cakes and I put marshmallows on top of the cupcakes to make them prettier; I don’t eat them though.” Reception pupil, Eva, said that she was going to build up big muscles because she likes going on the climbing wall. Early Years Foundation Stage Leader, Amy Oldham, said,

17

“I was part of the design process along with the headteacher, Kathryn Bishop, and Pentagon, who carried out the work. We want to be able to give our children outdoor life experiences to boost their confidence in taking a risk and learning how to express themselves.” Artificial grass means the area is accessible in all weathers and they have an open door policy so Reception pupils can wander into the outdoor area at any time. “We have now been rated good by Ofsted and our numbers in the Reception classes are going from strength to strength. The smiles on the faces of the children are proof enough that the investment was worth it!”

Allocation Of School Places

W

hen you apply for a school place in Rossendale, you are advised to list three schools. The school that you name as your highest preference would normally be the one you really want.

The admission policy for each school is applied to your child’s application along with all the other applications for the same school. At this stage, it doesn’t matter whether you have listed the school as preference 1, 2 or 3, all applications are considered equally against each school’s policy. It is where your child is placed within that policy that counts. All applicants for each school are put into order according to the criteria in that school’s policy. Places at the school are filled in order up to the published admission number. The answer for each preference will either be a yes (place available) or no (place not available). If more than one school can offer a place, then the order of preferences will be considered. Only one offer will be given, this will be the highest of those that can offer a place. If none of the schools preferred can offer a place, an allocation will be made to a school that does have one. Please be aware you need to apply for a place at a primary school, even if it’s linked to your child’s nursery, or your child’s brother or sister is already at the school.

How To Apply For A Primary School Place

I

f your child was born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016 they will usually start primary school in September 2020. Children can start reception year at primary school from the September after their fourth birthday. However, by law children don’t have to start school until the beginning of the term after their fifth birthday. Each year around this time we try to outline the important information to help guide you along the way. Although the closing date for the process is Wednesday 15th January 2020, it’s a good idea to start thinking about it now. Lancashire has an on-line admission application system. Full versions of the prospectus and application form are viewable and downloadable via both the on-line application system and the County Council website.

First things first:

You will need to enter three different schools - your first, second and third school preferences. If you need advice; contact our local Area Education Office situated in Accrington on 01254 220747. Before you apply, research the schools in your local area. It is always best to include a school near to where you live as one of your preferred options. Demand for school places in some parts if Rossendale is high and this could help towards you being offered a local school. Your nearest school for admission purposes is measured by a straight line.

Read the information for parents:

Find out more details about the admission criteria and process in the Information for Parents 2020 to 2021 online document.

More information may be needed:

If any of your preferences are for a voluntary aided (church) school, a foundation school, an academy or a free school they may require you to complete a Supplementary Information Form (SIF). Please contact the school directly to find out about the admission criteria.

When you’ll find out:

If you have further questions or need more information you can contact the Admissions team in Accrington, also the Information, Advice and Support Service on 0300 123 6706 Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. Or email information.lineteam@ lancashire.gov.uk

You will be informed of your official offer of a primary school place online Thursday 16 April 2020. Lancashire County Council cannot confirm results with you over the phone due to data protection. Also due to the number of applications they receive, they cannot provide updates on your application between the closing date and the official offer being issued.

Filling in the application form:

If you registered online in previous years (before 1 September 2017) you will need to re-register as Lancashire County Council is using a new system. To complete the form you will need the following information: • A valid email address - this is the address they will use to confirm your application and the school place you will be offered in April 2020. • Your name, address and telephone number. • The forename, surname and date of birth of the child. • The child’s permanent address (if different from the parent/guardian applying). • The names of your first, second and third school preferences. • Details of brothers or sisters who will be attending one or more of the schools you are applying to when the younger child starts in September. • If the child receives care, you need the name of the Local Care Authority that is respon-sible for this care and the child’s social worker. • You will need to choose your own user ID, this must be must be 6-16 characters long and contain letters and numbers only. You will also need to choose a password. When you have completed your form fully it will show as complete. You can log back in to your application form to check the information you’ve already given and to add more if you need to; if you do change it, just make sure you re-submit. You can change your completed online application at any point before the closing date.

Good Luck!

A

recent news report stated that the UK has now lost its measlesfree status. What exactly does that mean and why is it happening?

Let’s Talk About Measles Measles is a ‘contagious’ disease. That means the virus is spread very easily by coughs and sneezes. When a person contracts the disease they usually recover in seven to ten days, during which time their immune system has created antibodies and they can never contract measles again. However, while ill, they will have passed the infection on to many people around them who will go through the same process until, eventually, a significantly large proportion of the population is immune so the virus can no longer reach new, infectable people and the instances of the disease begin to reduce. This is what is known as ‘herd immunity’ and it happened in the early part of the 20th century. However, as new children were born, instances began to rise again, peaking at over 750,000 in 1962. The measles vaccine was introduced in 1963. Vaccination means you can become immune to the disease without having to suffer the disease and, by 2016, the UK had vaccinated over 95% of the population. This is the target set by health experts to achieve herd immunity and so the World Health Organisation declared the UK to be measles free. This didn’t mean that measles had gone (similar to what has happened to the smallpox virus) but just that no new outbreaks originated in the UK. However, the cases of the disease in the UK are on the rise again and the WHO has now removed the measles-free status. The rise in cases is completely due to lower than required up take of the free,

combined Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR) vaccine. The NHS offers all parents an option to give this vaccine to their child at 12 months of age, with a booster sometime around school starting age. Figures from 2018 show the national up take figure is just 87% and, more worryingly, just 83.7% in Lancashire. Way below what is required to keep the whole community safe. There are many reasons why parents opt out of the vaccination programme. Some believe their children may react to the vaccine, some believe the long term safety of the vaccine is not yet proven (56 years for the measles vaccine, 31 years for the combined MMR vaccine) and others believe natural immunity gained from suffering the disease is better, despite lots of evidence from health experts to counter all these arguments. However, there is a problem. Many other countries across Europe are seeing the same decreased up take of the vaccine, resulting in large outbreaks of the disease. This inevitably means the virus will reach the UK and there will be increased cases here. The lack of herd immunity means the virus will spread, probably reaching the most vulnerable. Those most at risk from serious complications after contracting the measles virus include teenagers and adults, children with weakened immune systems (from an existing condition), children with poor diets and babies under one year old. That final group is a problem because

21

babies cannot be vaccinated until they are 12 months old and so rely completely on the herd immunity to keep them safe. The usual symptoms of the disease include runny nose, watery or sore eyes that may be sensitive to light, a fever and general aches and pains. Then the rash, which can often start in the mouth. Overall, not very pleasant but more serious complications can, and do, occur. Diarrhoea and vomiting leading to dehydration, ear infections, laryngitis, pneumonia, bronchitis and croup are common. The high fever may cause fits. Frequently measles can cause hepatitis, meningitis or encephalitis and, in rare cases it can lead to serious eye disorders, possibly including sight loss, heart or nervous system problems or a fatal brain condition known as subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). In pregnancy it can cause miscarriage or stillbirth. In England and Wales, in 2017, there were 284 reported cases of measles. In 2018 that rose to 991. In the first quarter of 2019 there were 230 cases. Until the virus is eliminated globally we will continue to see cases come to the UK and, to do that, we need to get the vaccination rate back on track. If you have not had your children vaccinated, please speak to your doctor or health visitor. If you are nervous about the vaccine they will be happy to discuss your fears. This awful disease can be eliminated completely, if everyone plays their part.

Halloween? It’s an American idea isn’t it?....

O

ctober has arrived and the spookiest night of the year is fast approaching – Thursday October 31st. Already the shops have started selling fancy dress costumes, party sweets, decorations and, of course, pumpkins. But did we import this idea from America?

The celebration of Halloween is the evening before the Christian holy day of All Hallows on November 1 and All Souls’ Day on November 2. It begins the three-day Allhallowtide, dedicated to remembering the dead, saints, martyrs and the faithful departed. This respect for the dead had Celtic followers even setting places at their dinner table as a welcome sign for dead souls. Commonplace in Irish communities, they would light candles and say prayers to appease the dead before eating, drinking and playing games. In the 12th century Christians developed the custom of baking and sharing ‘soul’ cakes and often poor children would go from house-to-house collecting cakes. And trick or treating? Like it or loathe it, collecting sweets is a great part of Halloween and can be traced back to Ireland and the Scottish Highlands in the 18th century where youngsters

22

would threaten mischief if they were not rewarded. The most common association of Halloween is the pumpkin and the idea of carving them with ghoulish faces and using them as lanterns. They were common in Ireland and the Scottish Highlands in the 19th century, before spreading to England. Immigrants to North America found the native pumpkin easier to carve and the tradition evolved and spread back to the UK. So you have carved your pumpkin, what do you make with the discarded flesh...

New Head’s Healthy Vision for Alder Grange School & Sixth Form Having held various roles at Alder Grange in Rawtenstall over the past 21 years, Mrs Griffiths has taken over from retired Headteacher, David Hampson. It’s clear why she’s been appointed, as she talks with such passion about how Alder Grange is unique and special. “The school has a family feel. We’re small enough that everyone knows everyone and we all look out for each other,” she explains. Her vision is to improve the emotional health and wellbeing of everyone at the school¬. With this in mind, Mrs Griffiths has introduced Mental Health Ambassadors, a Wellbeing Hub and Mental Health First Aid training at the school, to support both pupils and teachers. “We know as the pressures on everyone in society continue to grow, we need to give people the tools to help deal with them. If our pupils and teachers feel well and are happy to be here, we’ll all achieve more.” Other plans already in place at the school include a new induction programme

J

oanna Griffiths took up the role of Headteacher at Alder Grange School in September. Whilst she plans to ensure the Alder Grange ethos is preserved, it’s certainly not just ‘school as usual’ at Alder Grange. Mrs Griffiths has her own vision for the school – and it’s already taking shape.

and enhancement of the curriculum to better meet the needs of pupils. And after just a few weeks into the new school year, things are already off to a great start. “Our start to the year has been very positive - everybody seems calm and the school has a nice feel. Our sixth form is well-attended and students are motivated to learn and achieve,” says Mrs Griffiths. The flexible curriculum offered at Alder Grange Sixth Form, ag6, is making it an increasingly popular choice. Students can choose a mix of courses that are most suitable for them, with the opportunity to combine both academic and vocational courses. All in the context of the same ethos as the rest of the school, with an unrivalled level of one-to-one support compared with larger colleges and sixth forms. Ag6 is not just for Alder Grange School pupils either, with pupils from all high schools welcome at the sixth form. Parents and prospective students are invited to a

Open Evening on Thursday 14th November to view the purpose-built sixth form facilities, find out more about the Alder Grange ethos and speak with students and teachers (and Mrs Griffiths of course).

Creamy Pumpkin & Lentil Soup • • • • • • • • •

Ingredients

1 tbsp olive oil, plus 1 tsp extra 2 onions, chopped 2 garlic cloves, chopped approx 800g chopped pumpkin flesh, plus the seeds 100g split red lentil ½ small pack thyme, leaves picked, plus extra to serve 1l hot vegetable stock pinch of salt and sugar 50g crème fraîche, plus extra to serve

Method

Heat the oil in a large pan. Fry the onions until softened and starting to turn golden. Stir in the garlic, pumpkin flesh, lentils and thyme, then pour in the hot stock. Season, cover and simmer for 20-25 mins until the lentils and vegetables are tender. • Meanwhile, wash the pumpkin seeds. Remove any flesh still clinging to them, then dry them with kitchen paper. Heat the 1 tsp oil in a non-stick pan and fry the seeds until they start to jump and pop. Stir frequently, but cover the pan in between to keep them in it. When the seeds look nutty and toasted, add a sprinkling of salt and a pinch of sugar, and stir well. • Whizz the cooked pumpkin mixture with a hand blender or in a food processor until smooth, then add the crème fraîche and whizz again. Taste for seasoning. • Serve with a spoonful of crème fraîche, a few thyme leaves and the toasted seeds scattered on top. For more tasty recipes visit bbcgoodfood.com
