Introducing Wild Accessories!

W

ild Accessories is a newly established family-run business, created with strong ethical beliefs.

Co-founder Amanda, was a stay at home mum until she played around with crafts and discovered a talent for making stunning looking bath bombs, ‘I totally fell in love with the gorgeous scents and amazing colours’ she explained. ‘As a vegetarian it is important to me that my products are animal and cruelty free. I wanted source products that have not been tested on animals whilst supporting local businesses. So we have created, mostly handmade by us, a variety of beautiful soaps and bath bombs. Children love our bath gift sets and we have a popular men’s range too. We offer something perfect for everyone and for all bathing occasions.’ Wild Accessories can be found on Rawtenstall Market every Thursday and Saturday, as well as local charity events and summer school fairs. Amanda also is available for bath bomb parties and sincerely hopes that you enjoy their products as much as they enjoyed making them. We wish Wild Accessories every success!

W

ater Band is a small and friendly village brass band which welcomes beginners and experienced players from the age of seven. New players are given one-to-one and small group tuition by experienced musicians before progressing into the Junior Band.

Under the leadership of conductor Beth Moore, currently a student in brass at The Royal Northern College of Music, the band takes part in many different types of event, including local marches and church processions, indoor and outdoor concerts. In December, Christmas Carols in the local supermarkets and around the streets of Water and Lumb keep the band busy. Water Band has been playing music in the village of Water and around the Rossendale Valley for over 150 years. Their Band room is on Burnley Road East, close to Lumb Baptist Church, and practice sessions for beginners are on Saturday mornings from 9.30am to 12 noon. Beth is keen to stress, ‘As well as free tuition, the band will lend beginners an instrument, so there is no financial outlay.’ To find out more, or have a taster, come along on a Saturday morning and watch their practice. Or join them at one of the events where they will be performing this summer, including Rawtenstall Clog Market on 26th May and 23rd June, as well as Summer Fairs at St Nicholas’s Church, Newchurch on 2nd June and Lumb Baptist Church on 3rd June. To find out more contact John Mitchell on 07816 765 474, visit www.waterband.co.uk or just pop in and see the band in action. You’ll be sure of a warm welcome.

Your future, their future

ur vision is clear: “To improve outcomes for all children at school through exceptional training of the next generation of teachers.”

Sounds exciting? It is!! This is a fantastic opportunity for recent graduates to train locally. Katrina Brockbank, who is the Teaching School Business Manager at Tor View commented that, “We also particularly welcome applications from graduates of any age who are looking for a career change.” All lectures run from 9:30 – 4pm at the Ewood Campus, Tor View School, Haslingden and every effort is made to ensure that school-based placements are locally situated. Tor View was awarded Teaching School status in 2013. Since then they have steadily grown their Initial Teacher Training programme to include partner schools and students from across East Lancashire. Katrina went onto to say, “We believe that our student teachers are the future custodians of the profession, and we work hard to ensure that the training year equips them with the skills that they need to be ‘outstanding’”. Tor View Teaching School specialise in mainstream primary and SEND routes into teaching. The PgCE element of the course is delivered by the University of Cumbria and core modules in key subject areas, are delivered by Outstanding Specialist Teachers from across their partnership. Also on offer is a broad range of optional modules for students to choose from, available in both mainstream and SEND, but irrespective of their chosen ‘route’ students have the flexibility to choose any module they wish. Examples of optional modules include Forest School, Mental Health, Makaton, Sensory Diets, Dyslexia and many more. Interested? Why not arrange an informal chat.

out & about

Tatton Park,

Knutsford, Cheshire, WA16 6QN Tel: 01625 374400 tattonpark.org.uk

T

Tatton Mansion Hall and Park is believed to be one of the UK’s most complete historic es-tates, spread over 1,000 acres of deer park. It is home to a Tudor Old Hall, a neo-classical mansion, 50 acres of landscaped gardens, a rare-breed farm, an adventure playground and an essential cluster of tearooms and visitor shops. For nearly 400 years the estate was the property of the Egerton family until 1958 when it was bequeathed to the National Trust. To-day it is financed and maintained by Cheshire East Council. Once the cost-saving picnic was packed, it took under an hour to drive to. Beware, there is a £7.00 entrance and parking fee, however this allows you access to drive around and explore the park. If you want to visit the mansion house and gardens, this is all extra. If you wanted just to go for a (sunny) day out with a picnic and let the children enjoy the adventure play-ground and wander freely around the beautiful scenic deer park, then this is all that it will cost. In my humble opinion, I think the fee is worth it as it covers so much more than a parking charge! Should you want to visit the other attractions, as we (I) did, then I still found them reasonably priced. A family ticket (2 adults and 3 children) to gain access to the mansion only is £19.00. Tatton Park is big with a

number of family attractions, again, in my hum-ble opinion, too much to do in one day. So we were selective and just visited the Mansion House and had a long walk around a small part of the park. It’s worth planning what you want to do and see before you go. That way you can budget your time and your finances! Our visit to the Mansion House was fascinating and even interested the younger members of the Sunderland clan. There is an amazing library, lots of fabulous artwork and stunning damask furnishings to wonder at. One of my favourite rooms was the dining room, where a massive table is fully set with a Minton dinner service dating from the mid-19th century. So glad I wasn’t in service then doing the washing up! At the end of the 19th century around 40 indoor servants worked here supervised by a housekeeper and house steward. With Tatton Mansion you get the rare opportunity to visit ‘upstairs and down’ and see the whole of the house, not just selected rooms, so you get a complete experience of what the house was like in its heyday. Guides were present in most of the rooms and were knowledgeable and helpful in answering questions. We all really enjoyed the tour around and felt it was well worth the money. After a picnic near the adventure

playground (situated near the main car park), we took a lovely amble to explore the park. Deer just wander freely and get unbelievably close. We were aiming to stroll to a marked viewing point around Tatton Mere, but we never made it, it was too far for those of us with shorter legs. However, definitely worth a visit on another sunny day when we can further explore the number of nature trials that there are dotted around. Sturdy shoes are needed particularly if the weather has not been good as the ground can be uneven and muddy. Taking a pram or buggy would be fine on some of the walks, check out the Trail leaflets for suitable routes first. Toilets are plentiful; baby changing facilities are available and all are of a good standard. We all had a really enjoyable day as there was something for everyone. It is the sort of place you go for a day out every year or so and choose something different to do each time. I thoroughly enjoyed my birthday treat – well done me! By Tracey Sunderland

Photo courtesy of Cheshire East Council & Tatton Park

his is one of those places that every year, as we drive past the road signs destined for somewhere else, I promise we are going to visit but we never actually manage to make it. So when I was stuck for ideas of where to go for my birthday treat (yes, I have to organise that too), I came up with Tatton Park. My birthday, my decision, my treat, so no one is allowed to complain – that’s the rules in our family!

news Fusion Dance & Fitness

W

e’ve introduced some new classes at Fusion this Spring! We now offer children’s Gymnastics classes. Gymnastics will improve your child’s balance, co-ordination skills, strength, development and flexibility.” Owner and Principal Dancer, Helen Rothwell commented,

‘It’s a great discipline and the uptake has been fantastic! It’s great to see children so interested in this popular sport.’ Hooperobics a new style of class added to Fusion Fitness’s adult timetable on a Tuesday evening at 7.45pm. It’s an intensive fitness class that combines the hula hoop with aerobic style moves to give you a super all over body workout, whilst having fun. So whilst you are burning those calories off, your body is being toned too, especially great for the abdominal muscles. No previous experience needed! Another new adult class on the timetable is Clubbercise, a style of class all of its own, held on a Tuesday evening at 8.30pm. This is a fresh new dance fitness class with easy-tofollow routines taught in a nightclub atmosphere with rave glow sticks, lasers and disco lights. It’s a great opportunity to dance away those unwanted pounds to music taken from 90’s club anthems and the latest chart hits. Fusion is delighted to be performing at this year’s Bacup & Stacksteads Carnival to be held on Sunday 24th June, dancing on the main stage in Stubbylee Park. They will also be appearing at the Weir Summer Fete on Sunday 22nd July. So why not go along and say hello! For information on class times visit the website or contact Helen on 07873766101.

diary pages Free school meals - An update

A

ll children in Reception, Year 1 and 2 automatically qualify for free school meals in England. Eligibility for free school meals from Year 3 is linked to benefits and the system of calculating and claiming benefits is changing.

Support Allowance Housing Benefit Child Tax Credit Working Tax Credit Since Universal Credit began to be introduced in 2013, all children in Year 3 and upwards in households receiving the new benefit have been eligible for free school meals. This meant some children who were not previously eligible for free school meals can claim them, particularly those in households receiving working tax credit and housing benefit. The government has made it clear the extension of free school meals to those Year 3 children is a temporary measure. • • •

Six means tested benefits are being replaced by a single payment called Universal Credit which is a means tested benefit for people of working age who are on a low income. The six benefits being replaced are: • Income Support • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance • Income-related Employment and

Furthermore, in February 2018 it was announced that children in Year 3 and above in England whose parents earn less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any other benefits) would be entitled to a free school meal. This threshold will be frozen until 2021-22. In other words, if your child is eligible for free school meals now, they’ll remain eligible until they finish the phase of schooling (primary or secondary) they’re in on 31 March 2022. Check if your child can get free school meals by visiting www.lancashire.gov.uk/ children-education-families/schools/freeschool-meals. Also, your child’s school can get extra funding if you do.

T

he Rossendale branch of Save The Children has been fundraising for the international children’s charity for the past fifty five years, with a total of just over £500,000 having been raised to help children all over the world, including the UK.

Last October, one of Rossendale Save the Children’s committee members, Tim Nuttall, went to the East African country of Rwanda to look at how some of this money is keeping projects running there. Now Tim is offering a talk about his visit, and the work of Save the Children Rwanda, to schools and other groups in Rossendale and the North West. Tim said, “I was lucky to be one of just five UK volunteers to go to Rwanda. We packed a lot into a five day visit, and saw examples of Save the Children’s work in education, children’s rights, child protection, and health & nutrition. Save the Children have been running a project to improve the level of education in primary schools. In the school we visited it was great to see the enthusiasm of the children in a class being given a maths lesson - in English.” Tim explained that English is now the official second language in Rwanda, but children learn it from age seven.

The group also saw a community literacy project where volunteers teach reading skills to children in after-school clubs. Their parents make reading materials to be placed on the classroom wall, and meet once a month to raise funds for the project. “Rwanda is an amazingly clean and green country” said Tim. “They are already ahead of Britain in reducing the use of plastic. We were warned that taking a plastic carrier bag into the country in our luggage would mean a large fine. And on one Saturday each month everyone in the country,

including the President, has to spend time on community work such as cleaning the streets and tree planting.” The volunteers ended their week with a day at a camp for 56,000 refugees from neighbouring Burundi, where Save the Children run ‘Child Friendly Spaces’ and have built a full-sized hospital to care for children and adults. “Before we went, I was apprehensive about what we would see and how it would affect me”, Tim said, “But at the end of our visit we were all impressed by how the work Save the Children carry out in Rwanda is making such a difference to people there. It’s a great country with a difficult past, but an amazingly positive attitude towards its future.” Tim will be giving a talk at St James The Less Parish Centre on Thursday 24th May at 7pm. If you would like him to talk to your school or group contact Tim on williamtnuttall@ btinternet.com or 01706 226 857. By Tim Nuttall

ossendale is fortunate indeed to have Civic Pride volunteers working tirelessly to make it a better place to live, work, raise a family or start a business but they couldn’t achieve so much without the support of local people, businesses and other charities. Early in April, all profits from the stunning performance of ‘Breaking the Code’, performed by Rossendale Players at the Millennium Theatre, Waterfoot were donated to Civic Pride (Rossendale) to assist them in their endeavours. For those lucky enough to have purchased tickets it was hailed as a great success, hard to believe that the entire cast were amateurs, such was the quality of the performance. The combined proceeds from ticket and raffle sales was an amazing £650! The hard work of maintaining the gardens starts again as the seasons change but a recent donation of over 2000 plant pots, each containing an average of 5 bulbs – tulips, narcissus, daffodils, crocuses, snowdrops and several others – will result in a few aching backs no doubt! Thanks go to Heaton Park Garden Centre for their generous gift and to the many willing volunteers who will be busy planting them across the valley over the next few weeks. Regular volunteers live across the valley but an unsolicited email offering a day’s work

by around 20 staff from Daisy Communications in Nelson was a real bonus. It appears that one of their senior managers lives in Helmshore and is so impressed by the achievements of Civic Pride he wants to donate a day’s hard graft to support them! This is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at its best but carries advantages for the Daisy Group as well. Team building is a vital factor for staff morale in any organisation and many thousands of days and millions of pounds are spent on outdoor pursuits in the mountains and lakes of North Wales, Scotland and Cumbria. The end result may indeed achieve the ultimate goal of improved performance but this has the added bonus of helping the community. It isn’t the first time Daisy Communications have taken it upon themselves to put something back, last year they were working with the Ribble Rivers Trust, up to their chests in cold water dragging out shopping trolleys, prams and even a motorbike! All equipment was supplied by the Trust and the day is remembered with pride and satisfaction by those who took part. Needless to say, this year’s tasks may not be as exciting but Civic Pride are working hard to make sure that their efforts make a real difference and are asking local businesses to provide some lunch and stand them a pint afterwards! With several new projects about to start or already underway including repainting the metalwork on the Riverside Walk (opposite the ELR station), clearing and planting the North

end of the gyratory in Rawtenstall centre and erecting a greenhouse behind Rawtenstall market to grow plants for their many barrier baskets there’s no shortage of ideas! That of course is in addition to the routine work of weeding, planting, pruning, dead-heading and picking up litter to maintain their existing projects. Work has also begun to cut back the undergrowth behind the fence next to the delightful garden on the first outbound layby on the spur road in order to show it at its best. Their Outreach Team works hard with schools, scouts, guides brownies, cubs, beavers and Duke of Edinburgh Award students explaining the global consequences of dropping litter as well as involving them in a little light gardening. Where would they be without these dedicated volunteers, the sponsors who keep the cash flowing, the businesses who provide support in so many ways and the back up from the public bodies, including the council? Rossendale would be a far poorer place than it is. If you’d like to make a difference please email info@civic-pride.org.uk to discuss volunteering, arrange a meeting with the Outreach Team or if you prefer to make a donation go to www. justgiving.com and search for Civic Pride Rossendale.
