page header news Weir Riding Centre et in Weir, near Bacup, in the foothills of the Pennines, Weir Riding Centre is a wellestablished community horse riding facility. Open to new and experienced riders, young and young-atheart, the riding centre offers fantastic opportunities for people to care for and ride our ponies and horses. We have a purpose-built, flood-lit outdoor arena for private and group lessons, as well as access to the countryside and moors where we can hack out and enjoy the beautiful landscape. Principle Instructor, Kaye Naylor, is a highly experienced BHS Advanced Riding Instructor with a lifetime of experience of

horses and ponies and offers tuition on the centre’s ponies or welcomes you to bring your own horse. All our instructors and adults working on the yard are DBS-checked. Weir Riding Centre welcomes individual riders for private or group lessons. We also accommodate a number of local schools for group pony care and riding sessions as part of the PE curriculum. We are a registered Pony Club riding centre and our Saturday and Sunday Pony Mornings are extremely popular. Visit our website www. arah is a Yoga Professionals UK accredited yoga teacher, with over 1000 hours teaching experience and 20 years personal practice. She completed a 200-hour

foundational training in Vinyasa Flow Yoga with Vidya Heisel of Frog Lotus Yoga in Spain. Since then, she has completed further teacher training courses in Pre-Natal Yoga, Parent & Baby Yoga and Teen Yoga. Valley Yoga classes are accessible to everyone – every shape, every body and delivered in a warm, friendly environment (maximum 9 people per class). Sarah encourages correct and safe alignment through clear verbal instructions and offers hands-on assists to help students reach their full potential. Classes are intelligently sequenced with focus on breathwork and mindfulness as you flow between the positions, ending with guided relaxation to help you float away into a truly relaxed state of body and mind. Since teaching, Sarah has been amazed by the positive impact yoga has offered, not just physically but mentally, emotionally and spiritually. This has encouraged Sarah to deepen her knowledge in using yoga as a therapy for healing and she will be travelling to India in 2018 to complete a specialist qualification in Yoga Therapy. Valley Yoga is also expanding their offer for 2018 to include reiki healing, ayurvedic yoga massage and yoga retreats. So why not let Sarah help balance your life.

ecause regular exposure to music is educational and fun!

Jo Corbett has run Jo Jingles in Rossendale for 13 years and has been their “Franchisee of the Year” several times. Jo and her colleague, Gwen, run over twenty different parent and child classes locally every week, so there is bound to be a time which fits in with you and your youngster. Their classes are carefully structured according to individual age and ability and are kept small. Using only the highest quality of music from a vast array of sources, Jo and Gwen don’t expect you to sing…but joining in adds to the fun. Their props and imagination further stimulate play which develops fine and gross motor skills. Jo Jingles is educational with a structured weekly introduction to new and fun learning themes such as colour, shape, numbers and animals. Music develops early language acquisition which is why Jo Jingles provides training for Bury Children’s Development team which supports local nurseries and childminders. Regular sessions are run for Reception and Year 1 children to stimulate and educate all abilities including SEN (Special Educational Needs) and English as a Second Language (EASL). Jo Corbett believes that the secret of Jo Jingles success is, ‘It’s fun and fresh. Watching as youngsters join in with ‘Little Jo’, who is always ready to move to the music with fun actions and has over 1,000 songs under his belt, from old favourites to new music; you just know that every single class, week after week, is going to be different. It is an absolute joy to watch them all grow and play. I am so lucky to have a job that gives such satisfaction.’ But who is “Little Jo”? He’s the colourful, friendly character who actively participates in every class. From his initial welcome to his infectious waving and enthusiastic cuddles, Jo sings, dances and has a great imagination! Sometimes Jo is shy and needs encouragement too, but he always makes time for hugs when it is time to wave goodbye.

diary pages Children’s Flu Vaccine An annual nasal spray flu vaccine is offered to young children to help protect them against flu. Flu can be a very unpleasant illness for children, with potentially serious complications, including bronchitis and pneumonia. At what age should children have the nasal spray flu vaccine? This winter the vaccine will be available free on the NHS for eligible children, including: • Children aged 2 and 3 on August 31st 2017. • Children in reception class and school Years 1, 2, 3 and 4. • Children aged 2 to 17 with long-term health conditions.

What are the side effects of the flu vaccine for children? The nasal spray flu vaccine has few side effects – most commonly getting a runny nose after vaccination for a few days. How to get the flu vaccine for your child Your child’s GP or school should contact you about getting them vaccinated. Talk to the GP, practice nurse or your child’s school nurse if you want more information about when and how your child will be vaccinated against flu. If you haven’t heard yet from their GP contact them directly to make an appointment. How is the nasal spray flu vaccine given? The vaccine is given as a single spray squirted up each nostril. Not only is it needle-free – a big advantage for children – the nasal spray is quick, painless, and

works even better than the injected flu vaccine. The vaccine is absorbed very quickly. It will still work even if, after the vaccination, your child develops a runny nose, sneezes or blows their nose. The nasal spray flu vaccine will not only help protect your child against flu, the infection will also be less able to spread from them to their family, carers and the wider population. Children spread flu because they generally don’t use tissues properly or wash their hands. Vaccinating children also protects others that are vulnerable to flu, such as babies, older people, pregnant women and people with serious long-term illnesses. for pleasure culture, within families and schools. They have even included a section for 0-3s and also added some series recommendations for older children or advanced readers in the 12+ section. The Great Book Guide 2017 can be downloaded as a pdf from their website www. booktrust.org.uk. They believe that the right book is always what a child actually wants to read – and they hope their guide inspires families and schools to find that book.

Stonerig Raceway

et’s dispel any myths that this place will appeal only to boys. It appeals to all. I can vouch for that as I got unintentionally hooked when I took my younger son and his friends for an afternoon out. As ever, I was looking for something different to do, when I came across this place on the internet. Stonerig Raceway is an indoor Scaletrix centre with nine large themed tracks, all varying in difficulty and appearance. There is a snow track, space and desert ones, plus a 119 foot standard roadway to compete on for fastest lap times. There is even a Formula 1 simulation car to experience, however this is something that we will try on a different day. It’s situated in Lees, Oldham, relatively easy to find on a little industrial estate. The company was created by Gareth Stone, a selfconfessed Scaletrix fan, who found that when he wanted to take his own children out and do something different with them, there was no Scaletrix racing nearby or that was suitable. I booked an hour’s racing, which was about the right time, anything less and you wouldn’t have enough time to

try all the tracks out. The couple who run it are very helpful and accommodating; they were on hand to help put the cars back on the track and offer tips and advice to enhance the children’s race experience (like how to keep the cars on the raceway). None of the tracks are plain simple in construction. Each raceway has very different challenges and so this keeps the excitement (and noise) level high, right for the full hour and beyond in our case. When we went there was only one other family there, so we had the place virtually to ourselves. However, should you go at a more popular time then the helpers will ensure that everyone is rotated around the raceways by allocating set times on set tracks. This also helps keep the attention of the

younger ones. Stonerig suggest that their tracks are suitable for children aged 4 upwards; I would say that it would depend on their dexterity and concentration span, although some tracks are easier to master than others. There is no upper age limit, so whilst it was perfect place to visit with my seven year old, my husband and older son are planning a trip there as well. So is my daughter. Booking ahead is advisable, as it is a venue situated 45 minutes away. However, you can just turn up and play if you wish. Time slots of 30 mins, an hour or an hour and 30 mins can be booked in advance at a reasonable cost, per person, of no more than a standard trampoline session. You do not have to bring your own cars to race, (depending on how much of a Scaletrix fan you are, you can if you wish, at your own risk of them being damaged). There are basic refreshments available. It’s open every weekend 10.00am – 5.00pm and during school holidays. Check on their website for more details. I went along thinking I was just a taxi and chaperone, but inevitably I got hooked from the start (when I wasn’t helping put the cars back on the track). It was huge fun being a kid again. Competitive Mum alert! Like I said, a full Sunderland family visit is planned. By Tracey Sunderland

charity news

ossendale is surrounded by rugged moorland, scarred by mining and quarrying, a spur of the Pennine hills. Our towns are gritty and Northern with remnants of a proud industrial past mixed with modern housing and a few industrial units. Look above the shop fronts and you’ll often see the beautiful stone architecture of buildings proudly erected by our Victorians ancestors.

However, it’s not only earlier generations who recognise the value of giving back to the community. We are fortunate in having an amazing charity, Civic Pride (Rossendale) and its sister groups in Haslingden, Bacup and Weir. Composed entirely of volunteers, they’re a dedicated lot who don’t take themselves too seriously but are determined to rid the area of that modern scourge, litter, whilst restoring and maintaining community gardens. In 2016 from across the valley they

collected over 3000 bags of litter. 1.5 million items. 18 tons. 1 year. Their Outreach team works with schools, uniformed and non-unformed youth groups and Duke of Edinburgh Award participants to raise awareness of the problem of litter. Using games and hands on, practical sessions children learn how a plastic bottle dropped on a Rossendale street can travel through the drains, into the rivers and then to the sea where it eventually breaks down and enters the food chain. In Rawtenstall alone 14 beautiful gardens have been created or regenerated including the much admired banking opposite ASDA, Bacup’s Wall of History Garden and in Haslingden, the Green Squirrel garden now maintained by willing volunteers. One visitor was recently heard referring to Rawtenstall as ‘The Floral Town’! To improve the first view of Rawtenstall for visitors arriving by train, grants are being applied for to improve the riverside gardens opposite the entrance. Additional barrier baskets have been placed on Bury Road to make the route to Bank Street more attractive but it costs over £4000 a

year just to replant them for winter and summer! In 2017 Civic Pride (Rossendale) was awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for Voluntary Groups. This was in recognition of the incredible achievements of local volunteers past and present who have done so much to make our valley a more pleasant place to live, work, raise a family or start a business. Two years ago, work started on Trickett’s Memorial Ground on Burnley Road East in Waterfoot. This garden has a fascinating and little known history, a short description of which has been written by a Civic Pride volunteer. Great progress has already been made but they’re now receiving financial support from Co-op members in Waterfoot and Haslingden to create a community space for local residents, to sit, relax and make new friends. If you’d like to help as a volunteer, provide finance as a sponsor or simply know more about anything in this article please visit: www.civic-pride.org.uk or email: info@civic-pride.org.uk
