Welcome

Welcome To

The Winter ‘20 edition of The Scallywag magazine for Rossendale Welcome to the first Scallywag of this decade, 2020, a chance to try and brighten up your winter with this issue. Although dare I say it, we haven’t had much wintery weather so far, however we have still got to get through February yet and the Beast from the East was predicted a return, anyway moving on... In this issue’s Out & About we have included the quaint village of Heptonstall, Hebden Bridge; it’s a really delightful way to spend a winter’s afternoon, a real hidden gem. Throw on some wellies and go for an invigorating lung-busting uphill walk from Hebden Bridge, or alternatively you could take the car. It’s a lovely, quiet place, steeped in history not tourists!

Also included is a feature about Dippy the Dinosaur and his tour stop to Rochdale, in fact his only stop in the North West. Accompanying the dinosaur in Rochdale is a major family-friendly exhibition at Touchstones and a whole host of dino-friendly events happening throughout the area. A date definitely for the half-term diary! Once again, I thank friends, readers, contributors and advertisers alike for your support and loyalty. I really couldn’t do this without you!

Pre & Post Natal Bootcamps

xercise and endorphins are the wonder drug we all need! Arguably more so when navigating pregnancy and motherhood, with so many changes going on that are out of your control – exercise is you time; control over your body (bump) and mind.

Supportive, fun and friendly, bootcamps are anything but the stereotypical military style… sessions vary each week, using a variety of exercise formats, weights and bodyweight. All exercises modifiable for your ability, experience level and pre and post-natal stage. Benefits of exercise through pregnancy and beyond are: • Facilitates & supports labour – supports with the recovery journey. • Lowers risks of pregnancy related aches & pains – builds strength back up, especially in core and pelvic floor. • Improves posture & strength – for pregnancy and for carrying baby and all the baby’s things… • Improves mental well-being, selfesteem and sleep – as tired as you feel exercise and endorphins will give you a mega energy and confidence boost. • Meet and share the journey with other mums and mums-to-be – exercise and socialise.

We want you in our bootcamp crew!

Check out Brooks Fitness on Facebook (Facebook.com/BrooksFitnessPT) for lots of class clips, pics and reviews, and join our bootcamp crew. For more information and to book your place, visit: brooks-fitness.co.uk, email: hello@ brooks-fitness.co.uk.

What’s On:

A

jam packed programme of roarsome dinosaur inspired activities has been unveiled as Rochdale and the North West gears up to welcome Dippy the dinosaur to the area in February.

The Natural History Museum’s famous dinosaur cast, Dippy, left the museum for the first time in 2017 to embark on a national tour and Rochdale has been selected as one of his As stops. Rochdale, which is the only North West stop on the tour, will play host to the famous dinosaur from 10 February 2020 to 28 June 2020 at Number One Riverside with an accompanying Dippy exhibition at Touchstones Rochdale. It’s free to see Dippy and visit the Dippy exhibition.

Huge Dippy Events Programme Is Unveiled

Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure, is being brought to Number One Riverside and visitors across the UK by the Natural History Museum in partnership with the Garfield Weston Foundation, and supported by Dell EMC and Williams & Hill. And the council and Link4Life who are organising Dippy’s stay in Rochdale, are determined to make it an experience to remember, with the accompanying events programme featuring everything from a giant Diplodocus lego build to a dino inspired Halle orchestra performance. More than 20 events and activities will be on offer throughout Dippy’s stay. Highlights include a dino lego build, which will see LEGO artist Warren Elsmore come to Number One Riverside to build a giant Diplodocus out of lego bricks, with the help of children and families. The Halle Dinosaurumpus family concert will see the world famous orchestra perform at Middleton Arena with dinosaur explorer Tomas O’Redmond in a special show. Over at Touchstones Rochdale, visitors can explore an exciting and ambitious Dippy Exhibition which will be filled with interactives and hands on displays. There will be an opportunity to learn more about the Diplodocus and other dinosaurs and get up close to some fossilised bones including teeth, eggs and even dinosaur poo in

the Dinosaur gallery. In the swampland gallery, people will travel back in time to see what Rochdale would have been like 300 million years ago, before heading to the ‘Our Changing Planet’ gallery to look at how we can all work together to make a difference to protect the future of our planet. And children can get even more hands on with an opportunity to meet mini beasts like spiders and scorpions at a special session at Touchstones Rochdale, one of many activities which will take place there during his stay. Those who prefer getting active can get involved energetic pursuits like the Dino Dash at Rochdale Leisure Centre and building boats on Hollingworth Lake. Dippy on Tour has proved a record breaker, with over 1.5m people visiting the muchloved dinosaur at his tour stops so far; Dorset, Birmingham, Belfast, Glasgow, Newcastle and Cardiff. Rochdale will be the penultimate stop, before the tour finishes at Norwich Cathedral in October 2020. All events and activities, and booking information, can also be found at: www. visitrochdale.com

Universal Credit And Its Concerns Universal credit is a benefit for workingage people, replacing the six main benefits and merging them into one payment. It was designed to make claiming benefits simpler. A single universal credit payment is paid directly into claimants’ bank accounts to cover the benefits for which they are eligible. Claimants then have to pay costs such as rent out of their universal credit payment. The latest available figures show that there were 2.6 million universal credit

claimants as of October 2019. Just over a third of claimants were in employment. The idea of universal credit is that it can be claimed whether you are in or out of work. There’s no limit to the number of hours you can work per week if you receive it, but your payment reduces gradually as you earn more. How much you can receive in universal credit payments in the first place depends on things like whether you have children

and if you qualify for housing or disability payments. Universal credit is paid in arrears. For example, if you sign on on 1 January, you’ll receive your first payment on 5 February, based on what you earned in the previous month. So four weeks of earnings are assessed, plus a further week to process the payment. For more information please visit: www.gov.uk/universal-credit

Hebden Bridge By Tracey Sunderland

on’t ask why, but Heptonstall has been our ‘Brigadoon’ for two attempts over the last year or so. It’s a place I’ve been aiming for us to visit via a walk from Hebden Bridge, but our first two attempts ended up with us either being on the wrong side of the valley, or being able to see the church spire but not actually reaching our intended destination. I did say, don’t ask!

The ancient village of Heptonstall sits on top of a steep hill on the north side of the Calder Valley, overlooking Hebden Bridge. It can best be described as similar in feel to the village of Haworth, which is steeped in Bronte history, but with a lot less tourists. It’s interesting, quiet, and an historic step back in time. Heptonstall made its money from the wool trade until the end of the 18th century when water, and then steam powered mills dictated that the industry was located on the more accessible valley floor. As life changed with the Industrial Revolution the little settlement fell into decline yet much of the town has been left unchanged from its glory days before the mills came. Our particular route to Heptonstall involved a stunning walk starting along the tow path next to the canal in Hebden Bridge and then, once locating the correct path, following the Pennine Bridleway up into the wooded Jumble Hole Clough and then crossing Colden Water via an old footbridge. Ahead is the deep gorge of Colden Clough and above it, the village of Heptonstall. However there are easier ways to get there (sort of), including walking up a very, very steep cobbled ‘pack-horse’ street from Hebden Bridge and then taking some steps, or even much easier taking a car! The views over Calder Valley from Heptonstall are stunning, but it’s also a

fascinating place. Some of the buildings are over 400 years old and all sorts of unusual, interesting things can be found searching the unexpected alleyways such as a small dungeon where trouble-makers could be kept and the ‘pinfold’ where stray animals would be impounded. This is now the picnic site. There is also a pump, a well and a set of stocks. There is a tiny museum here packed with content; it’s the old fashioned kind without buttons to press or puzzles to rearrange but none the less interesting. It’s set in a building that was once Heptonstall Grammar School. We learned about The Coiners who were a successful gang who clipped tiny bits of gold off coins and melted them down to forge new ones. Their leader was hanged in 1770 and is buried in the churchyard opposite. There’s also a display about the Battle of Heptonstall in the Civil War. The museum is free and makes an interesting short visit when you have children with you. Be warned, it is not open all year round so check before planning a special visit. Right next to the museum are two churches, rather oddly in the same churchyard. They are attractive in differing ways as the older of the two, which dates in parts from the Middle Ages is in ruins. The newer 19th century church is charming. For adults and those

interested in poetry, it’s worth exploring around the ancient graveyard, for tucked away is the grave of the poet, Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes’s first wife, and to which tokens and flowers are still left today as a sign of respect and affection. Close by are the graves of his parents as well. There is a bustling arts and crafts gift shop, a pub which is welcome to walkers and a lovely little tea room to visit while you are here. However, there are no public toilets or litter bins. Heptonstall is well worth the effort of ‘finding’ as it’s unusual and interesting and it really is like stepping back in time. It makes such a change from fancy theme parks or ‘educational’ places. Now we have found our way, we shall go back again, as like in ‘Brigadoon’, the 1954 musical movie, there’s a feel to this place that will keep drawing us back, although definitely sooner than in 100 years’ time.

Archaeology in Rossendale

W

e’re all aware that the Industrial Revolution had a dramatic effect on the valley over the last 250 years but were there people living here in earlier times? In the Middle Ages? Roman times? Pre-history?

The recently formed South Pennine Archaeology Group (SPAG) based in Rawtenstall is determined to find out and have already made some interesting discoveries. ‘Broadclough Dykes have puzzled people for centuries’ said Catherine Rousseau-Jones, Chair ‘but there are other potentially interesting sites which may also be far older than originally thought.’ Established just prior to Christmas 2019, the group already has a membership of over 20 members but is keen to increase numbers by recruiting young people wishing to study archaeology at university as well as local residents wanting to know more about their heritage. Their first event was a talk in January 2020 by Neil Coldrick of Holcombe Moor Heritage Group who enthralled the audience with his story of medieval iron smelting in the Holcombe valley. Held in the comfort of Ashday Lea Masonic Hall in Rawtenstall, the event was a great success.

The next talk ‘Buckden Bill - Yorkshire Tragedy’ is 7.30pm on Thursday 12th March at the same location, behind St Mary’s Chambers. Richard Matthews will unravel the mystery of a skeleton found in a Dales lead mine! A great story told with wit and humour by a master storyteller. Suggested donation £3.00. Pay on the door. In addition, digs, field walks, experience days, trips and visits to other sites plus online and archive based research will all be taking place over the coming months. If you’d like to know more please email spag@chro. co.uk, call Roger Grimshaw on 07798 582225 or follow them on Facebook @ southpenninearchaeology.

Due to collaborative campaigning and our hard work on the ground, galvanizing the most incredible people to join us in our fight for menstrual equality, the government in England have followed in the Welsh and Scottish government’s footsteps and will provide, in early 2020, menstrual products in all schools and colleges across the country. As such, our projects have begun (Oct/Nov 2019) to close down to allow the scheme to work in the best possible way and we will be monitoring the scheme closely. A huge thank you to everyone for your continued love and support, together we have made a difference.
