A Note from the Chairman Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen A belated happy new year to you all. We welcome to Test Park, the officials, players and supporters of Croydon football club, for this FA Buildbase Vase 4th round tie. Croydon play in the South Eastern Counties Premier Division and currently hold a mid-table position. We are very pleased to have been rewarded with a home tie after our impressive performance and 1-0 victory against much fancied Bodmin Town, in the previous round. This is a historic match for Team Solent football club, as this is the furthest we have progressed in an FA national competition.

Croydon have a proud history in non-league football and during the 1980/90s, played in the Isthmian Premier Division and will provide us with formidable opposition. Many thanks to everybody who has attended this afternoon’s match, let’s hope that we can enjoy a competitive game of football and if it is anything like the match in the previous round against Bodmin Town, we will have an enjoyable and entertaining afternoon. Best Wishes

Bill Moore Chairman

Jimmy, the management team and players are eagerly looking forward to this tie, with the knowledge, that if we play to our full potential, we can make further progress.

THE BUILDBASE FA VASE

The FA Vase effectively replaced The FA Amateur Cup in 1974. In Numbers:

2 St Andrews Finals

43 Seasons (inc. 2016-17)

1 Upton Park Final

37 Wembley Finals

1 White Hart Lane Final

2 Villa Park Finals

Current Holders: Morpeth Town

In that year The FA Council had decided to abolish the official distinction between amateur and professional footballers and this meant the end of The Amateur Cup and Amateur Internationals involving England.

allocated to The FA Trophy.

Two-hundred and twenty clubs entered The Vase in its first season but they did not include those clubs which had dominated in The Amateur Cup. Enfield, Hendon, Dagenham, Skelmersdale United and others at their level were immediately

4

For the first time in history, small clubs – even village clubs – had the chance of playing in a national final at Wembley. The first Vase Finalists were Hoddesdon Town from the Spartan League and Epsom & Ewell from the Surrey Senior League. The Hertfordshire side edged home 2-1 before a crowd of 9,000. Even a competition as democratic as The Vase had its elite clubs in the early years. Billericay Town, initially of the Essex

Senior League, won it three times in four seasons. Halesowen Town, then in the West Midlands Regional League, appeared in three Finals and were successful in two of them. They even beat a Southall side that had a young Les Ferdinand leading the attack. Until the new Wembley opened in 2007 the record attendance for a Vase Final was the 26,489 who saw the drawn 1989 Final between Sudbury Town and Tamworth at the old Wembley. Tamworth won the replay 3-0 at Peterborough and Ian Moores, a former Division One player with Tottenham Hotspur, scored one of the goals. The 2013-14 Vase competition was the 40th in history. Wembley has hosted 34 Finals, Villa Park and St Andrews two each, Upton Park and White Hart Lane one each. Thirty-two different clubs have got their hands on The Vase, donated by former FA Councillor Frank Adams. Whitley Bay lead the way with four wins. Aficionados of The Vase competition tend to rate the 1992 Final between Wimborne Town and Guiseley as the best so far. Wessex League Wimborne had a modest record in the competition before then, having never ventured beyond the

Third Round, but they embarked on a spectacular Vase journey that took them all the way from the First Round to The Final. A goal down after 14 minutes at Wembley, the Dorset side fought back to win 5-3. When The Vase Final returned to Wembley, a record 36,232 fans saw Truro City beat AFC Totton 3-1. Whitley Bay, the 2002 winners, achieved a sensational hat-trick of Final victories from 2009 to 2011. The Northern League’s dominance continued for two more seasons, with success for Dunston UTS and Spennymoor Town before Sholing, then Wessex League champions, got their name engraved. North Shields then came from behind to win the first Final to go to extra time since 2001-02. In 2015-16 Wembley Stadium staged the first Non-League Finals day, which saw both the Vase and the Trophy decided back-to-back in front of almost 47,000 fans. Morpeth Town came from behind to stun Hereford 4-1 with 45-year-old Chris Swailes on the scoresheet to win the Vase with a third different club.

The Opponents: Croydon FC

The club was founded in 1953 as Croydon Amateurs FC and its original players came from some of the stronger clubs playing in local football. The club spent their first ten years in the Surrey Senior League but whilst failing to win the championship (thrice finishing runners-up), evolved into one of that competition’s strongest outfits. In 1963–64, they joined the Spartan League, winning the league title at the first attempt in their only season in the competition. 1964 saw them join the Athenian League where they spent the next ten years, winning the Second Division title in 1965–66, suffering relegation four years later and then gaining two successive promotions to the Premier Division as runners-up to Herne Bay

14

(1970–71) and Harlow Town (1971–72) under the managership of Jimmy Rose. Rose’s departure to Dulwich Hamlet saw a mass player exodus and a season of struggle ensued. 1973 saw the suffix Amateurs dropped due to the impending changes to the status of players and a year later, under the management of Ted Shepherd, election to the expanding Isthmian League. Two seasons later, after an unbeaten 1975–76 campaign, the club gained promotion to the Isthmian’s top division – initially titled Division One but then retitled the Premier Division where they spent twelve seasons before deserved relegation to the First Division in 1989. A further relegation followed in 1994, but following Ken Jarvie taking over as Chairman /

Manager and internal reorganisation, they were promoted back to Division One within two seasons. The club’s first Isthmian League title – champions of Division One followed in 2000, before relegation two years later. The non-league scene was reorganised at the end of the 2005–06 season and this restructuring saw Croydon placed in the Kent League where following a third place finish in 2006–07, the club finished in midtable the second two seasons. 2008–09 culminated with success in the Kent League Cup after a penalty shoot-out win over Erith Town.

That turned out to be the club’s final Kent League fixture as they shuffled sideways into the Combined Counties League (a competition which evolved from the Surrey Senior League) for the 2009–10 season. This was effectively back where they spent their first ten years. After four fairly nondescript seasons, Croydon were moved again for season 2014-1025 by the FA, this time back to the Kent League in its new guise as the Southern Counties East Football League. The last couple of years in this League have followed a similar pattern. For after promising starts the Trams have finished in a disappointing eighteenth position in both seasons.

TEAM SOLENT’S first game in 2017 was their 37th in all competitions this season. Tonight’s line-up had a familiar look about it with James (Cat) Taylor once again donning the keeping gloves. In fact, both keepers are better known for their outfield abilities. Solent included two of its under-16 side on the bench tonight. Solent’s struggled to put their normal slick and efficient passing game together in the opening minutes. There was an early goal though as suddenly passing accuracy hit top drawer as Dacres-Smith found Sheedy whose ‘eye of a needle’ ball enabled Waller-Lassen to be in on Burch and finish firm and low. Waller-Lassen tried a distant effort that Burch blocked whilst a lunging downward White header from an Orvis corner was held by the Fawley keeper. Whiteley tried an effort for the visitors that Cat saved low, whilst Sheedy just failed to get a touch to an Orvis pass for Solent, the ball running through to Burch. Adekunle received a Wiseman pass for Solent but his shot hit the side netting. White did well to close down and deflect a Whiteley shot and, from the resultant Fawley corner, Sayce’s header drifted dangerously across the goal but went wide. Fawley defender Chugg did well to block an

Adekunle shot whilst, at the other end, Lamb challenged Bolton, the ball going over. HT: 1-0. Mitford came on for Orvis at the break and he almost made an instant impact with a long-range effort that went just over in the opening ten seconds. Waller-Lassen netted his,

and his side’s, second; receiving a Wiseman pass he took it down well and completed a neat finish. Bolton and Smith had chances for the visitors, but they did get a goal back when a Whiteley free-kick from a tad over 25-yards managed to sneak inside the near corner with Solent expecting a kick to the far post. The under-16 players Hunt and E Taylor were brought on and, as Fawley got forward Solent had to rely on stout defending by White and Pitts to keep their lead intact. Adekunle almost finished it for Solent but his low shot from the left hit the near post, the ball went across the goal and out beyond the far stick. Fawley sensed a point but Pitts again defended well, heading a Roche cross clear, whilst Green shot wide. DacresSmith and Mitford combined and it was played to Adekunle on the left who crossed in for the unmarked E Taylor to leap high and send a header into the open net. I’m sure his dad, back in the goal, would be extremely proud to not only play in a game at this level with his son but to notch a goal too – a chip off the old block! FT: 3-1. There we are, game over, it wasn’t the most convincing show at times but ultimately, Solent usually have goals in their locker and it’s three more points. Attention can now be directed to the FA Vase game against Croydon on Saturday. Team Solent are the last Wessex League team remaining in the competition.
