A Note from the Chairman Good afternoon everyone

We welcome the officials, players and supporters of Andover Town, for today’s Sydenham’s Wessex Premier League fixture. After a slow start and management changes, Andover have had a good second half of the season and have won their last two matches by 5-1 against Cowes Sports and Verwood Town, rising to 10th positon in the table, with 48 points, two points behind ourselves, although we have three games in hand. The last time we played Andover earlier in the season, we were beaten 2-1. We can expect a robust and competitive game and will need to be at our best to secure the points. Last Tuesday evening, away to Brockenhurst, we were beaten by 2-0. It was a disappointing result as both goals came from the penalty spot and although we had some long periods of possession, apart from two first half long range efforts from Jesse Waller-Lasson, one brought a good save from the Brock keeper and the other hit the cross bar, we did not create many clear goal scoring opportunities. To compound this, Jesse’s first half red card for retaliation, made the cause, all the more difficult, against a direct, rugged and uncompromising Brockenhurst side. In our last home match against Lymington Town, we were beaten 2-1, in an entertaining match, I am sure Jimmy and the players will view as three points lost. Although we showed an improvement in our recent form and played well, we missed a host of very good goal scoring opportunities that if taken, would have given us a comfortable win. Jemal Wiseman scored in the first half, to give us a 1-0 lead. One highlight was an impressive debut at left-back, from youth team player Daniel Head, who made some incisive tackles and was resolute in his defending. Away to Hamworthy United last week, on their new 3G pitch, we gained a comfortable 4-1 victory, thanks to goals from Silvano Obeng (2), Jesse Waller-Lasson and Tyrell Mitford.

I understand some teams have had difficulty with the 3G pitch, but it did suit our style of play, plus the fact that we regularly train on our own 3G pitch. Going in at half-time 1-0 down, we dominated the second half and this has given the players, a much needed boost in confidence. Congratulations to Jimmy, the management team and players, by beating Hamble Club reserves by 2-1 (aet), in the Southampton Senior Cup semi-final, they have booked a place in the final for the third consecutive year. As holders of the trophy for the past two seasons, we now face the winners of the Brockenhurst v Sholing semi - final, at St Mary’s stadium. It is a remarkable achievement, but we had a hard fought contest with Hamble, who pushed us all the way, for the full 120 minutes. Our goals came with a cracking shot from Jamal Wiseman and a fine finish from Silvano Obeng. In the reserves last home game against Verwood Town reserves, we gained an impressive 6-2 home win. Goal scorers were Craig Hunt, Giovanni Landu (2) and congratulations to the ever improving Ethan Taylor, who scored a hat trick. The SSU women’s firsts drew 2-2 with University of Southampton Women’s firsts last week, after going ahead 2-0, with goals from Vicky Carleton and Emily Crook. Although it was disappointing to draw the match, it means that they need to secure one more point from their last match, to clinch the league title. We wish them all the very best. We still have a great deal to play for this season, with a good chance of putting more silver ware on the table. As a rallying call to everyone connected with the club, we are approaching the home straight, let’s keep it going and at the end of the season, we can reflect on a job well done. Enjoy your visit to Test Park

Team Solent Football Club is the biggest sport club within Southampton Solent University. The men’s first team has recently won the Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Division 1 title, the reserve men’s team plays in the Wyvern Combination League, and a development team plays in the British Universities (BUCS) competition. The men’s first team also compete in the FA Cup and FA Vase each season, as well as being previous winners of the Southampton FA Senior Cup on four occasions. Team Solent also has a highly successful women’s football section, now competing in Southern League Division 1 and recent winners of BUCS Division 1.

4

Team Solent FC play on the university’s newest facility at Test Park - a multiple sports complex with a 3G pitch, rugby and football pitches. The men’s and women’s teams are predominantly made up of current university students, supplemented by alumni, staff and a few external players. In keeping with the nature of university sport, the team personnel changes substantially from year to year as students graduate.

The Opponents: Andover Town FC In November 2012, a couple of months after Andover Football Club went into administration, staff at Sparsholt and Andover Colleges were considering how to further enhance facilities for the Football Academy programme at both Colleges. After approaching Test Valley Borough Council an ambitious plan was developed to take over The Portway stadium in Andover and redevelop it as a site for teaching the Academy programme whilst, in addition, establishing an adult senior football side that would provide a vehicle for the more talented academy players to make the transition from youth to Senior football. Much was achieved however, despite support from the Wessex League, the Football Association initially denied the College the opportunity to enter a Senior side into the league and, through doing so, access some of the grant support necessary to bring the project to fruition. In May 2013 during a lengthy meeting at Wembley Stadium staff from the College and officials from the Wessex League had one final opportunity to convince F.A. staff that Andover Town Football Club should become a reality. Ultimately successful, manager Neil Benson then set about building a team capable of holding its own within Division One, whilst Assistant Principal Stuart Barlow and Curriculum Manager, Lawrence Blair, set about getting the stadium ready for the new team to play in. At the end of their first season Andover Town finished second in Wessex League Division One and were successfully promoted to the Wessex Premier Division for the 2014-2015 season.

8

They also finished as Runners-Up in the Andover Open Cup, losing on penalties to Otterbourne FC (having drawn 3-3 after extra-time) and went on the become the Winners of the Salisbury Hospitals Cup, defeating Bemerton Heath Harlequins in the Final 3-2. Andover Town ended the season on 73 points, winning 23 of the 30 games, drawing 4 losing just 3 games. In the 30 games played Andover Scored 108 goals, with Michael Dixon being Andover Town’s top goalscorer with 34 goals in 29 games. Town also ended the season with least goals against only conceding 28 goals, with goalkeeper Michael Weatherall keeping 13 clean sheets. Lewis Benson (captain) ended the season picking up both fans player and players player for the 2013-2014 season, another special mention should go to Lloyd Foot who scored 18 goals (league) from centre back, and the ex saints star subsequently moved on to play for Sutton United and then to Eastbourne Borough. The Town’s next season 2014/5 saw the team finish in a creditable 10th place in their first season in the Wessex Premier Division. Then the following season, 2015/6, the club finished in 4th place in the Wessex Premier League, just missing out on promotion. Finishing as second highest scorers in the league with 97 goals. The club also provided two England school boys internationals Charlie Gunson & Adam Grange. Season 2016/7 we progress to the 1st Qualifying round of the F.A. Cup beating Royal Wootton Bassett Town at home (5-2) & Spelthorne Sports away (3-2) along the

way before losing out to Farnborough in the next round. Having finished in fourth place in the previous season we were exempt to the first round proper of the F.A.Vase where we visited Fairford Town winning 2-1, so progressing into round two - our furthest in this competition. We, however, lost 2-1 away to Croydon in the second round.

With a win at Fawley in October we equalled a club record of 4 consecutive away wins in the league & beating Fairford Town in the F.A.Vase we equalled a club record of 5 consecutive away wins in all competitions.

Solent started well when Sheedy latched onto a poor goal-kick and had two shooting attempts at the Badgers goal but it was eventually saved by Morrison. The Brockenhurst keeper then had to deal with a low Mitford shot that bounced a shade awkwardly and later did extremely well to tip over a 25-yard Adekunle drive. Solent top scorer Waller-Lassen then attempted a splendid chipped effort but Brock defender Moore covered well to clear from the line. Waller-Lassen then showed most sublime skill to try a 35-yard shot with the outside of his boot that dipped late and bounced off the top of the home side’s bar. Apart from those opportunities, which were

all created by Solent, it was a bit of a battle for both of the teams. A significant incident occurred on 37 minutes when Waller-Lassen was fouled in midfield and responded by pushing the offender high up and he was shown a straight red card; if you raise your hands then you do run that risk. The Brockenhurst player was shown a yellow card for his part. With the watch ticking into time added on, a free-kick was played into the Solent box and it appeared that Adekunle was penalised for a challenge on Burt and a penalty was awarded which R Long [pen] placed low into the corner. HT: 1-0.

Brockenhurst can be a tough side to get the better of when they have their noses in front and Solent had to do it a player short. They put up a decent show in the second half but chances proved to be few and far between although Nolan with a header and Mitford with a stabbed effort were off target, both being created by Adekunle crosses. Following a poor goalkeeper’s clearance, White was penalised for a foul on former Solent student Nwachukwu and Brockenhurst were awarded another spot-kick and R Long [pen] did it again, fairly straight this time as Banda dived. There was still time for Wiseman, under pressure, to head an Orvis corner over the bar which practically summed up Team Solent’s disappointing evening. FT: 2-0 and the same result as the match played here last season. Solent battled hard but it proved to be too much against a Brock side who created little themselves; in fact, both goals coming from penalties rather sums up this encounter (they do count equally as much as any other, of course). Brock were well marshalled at the back by Burt, who had briefly been a Team Solent player two years back. This was only the third-time Solent had failed to score in a game this season and it was their eleventh league defeat. But, we must finish on a Solent positive, mustn’t we! It was great to see kingpin defender Olumuyiwa get a few minutes at the end of the game following an eight-week injury lay-off.
