A Note from the Chairman Good afternoon everyone We welcome the officials, players and supporters of Bemerton Heath Harlequins football club, for this afternoon’s Sydenham’s Wessex Premier League fixture. Bemerton occupy a comfortable mid-table position and despite the announcement that they will be under a new management team next season, last week they pulled off a remarkable 2-1 victory over leaders Moneyfields. As always, we can expect a hard fought and entertaining match In recent weeks, we have had a number of away matches that have reflected our inconsistent form that seems to have manifested itself since we were beaten by South Shields in the FA Vase, back in February. Amongst these results, was a 2-1 defeat by Sholing in the semi-final of the Wessex League Cup. As holders, it is disappointing not to replicate last season’s success, but we have done well to reach the semi-final and with better acceptance of some good goal scoring opportunities, the result may have been different. We have an opportunity to avenge this defeat, when we meet Sholing in the Southampton Senior Cup Final to be played at St Mary’s stadium, we await confirmation of the date. The Saturday before last, we gained an impressive 2-0 win away to Cowes Sports with goals from Matt Sheedy and an excellent long range effort from Tobi Adekunie. In the two subsequent away games we lost 3-2 to Bashley, goals by Pip Nolan and Jemal Wiseman and 3-0 to AFC Porchester. In last Tuesday’s away match at Bournemouth Poppies, we drew 0-0 in what can be construed as, a fair result.

The reserves have had some good results recently and comfortably won last Monday’s home match against Lymington by 5-1. Goal scorers were Lewis Danquah (2), Ethan Taylor (2) and Jacob Noonan. Young players from the under 16s have been given the opportunity to gain experience and I am informed, are developing well. At the present time, we are on course to finish in second position, provided we can maintain a consistent run in. The under 16 youth team were recently beaten by 3-0 in the final of the Hampshire cup. It is always disappointing to lose in a cup final, but it will be good experience for the players and manager Dave Fear informs me, the squad is developing well and are on course for at least a top three finish in the league. It has recently been announced that Phil Green, Head of Sport at SUU, will be retiring in August this year. Phil has been instrumental in founding Team Solent football Club in 2004 and has figured significantly in the club’s rise from Southampton Junior Leagues to the Wessex Premier Division and this season, reach the last 16 in the FA Vase. Additionally, he has overseen the development of our fantastic facility at Test Park and the growth of the football club, to the seven teams that are contained, within the club. It is important to recognise Phil’s input and I am sure he will continue to attend matches both home and away. We wish him a well-earned and happy retirement. On behalf of everybody connected with TSFC, I would like to convey our thanks. Best wishes

Bill Moore Chairman

The Opponents: Bemerton Heath Harlequins

Bemerton Heath Harlequins were formed in May 1989 with the amalgamation of two men’s clubs, senior side Bemerton Athletic & Sunday side Moon FC, and one boys club Bemerton Boys.

It’s history now that the talks were successful, Bemerton Heath Harlequins were formed and now operate from a magnificent clubhouse which was mainly built by self-help.

All three clubs were previously very successful in their own right and were a major force in local soccer.

Since the merger, the club have established themselves as a major force in Wessex, Wyvern, and Youth football, winning countless cups & League’s with all age groups at County & League level.

Bemerton Athletic won the Wilts League on three occasions, Moon FC consistently won honours in the Salisbury and Andover League’s and Bemerton Boys won several trophies in the Burbage and Mid-Wilts Leagues respectively. The Bemerton Athletic and Moon FC were by the end of end of 1988, both looking for a fresh challenge, and provisional talks of a merger were held with an entry into the Wessex League as the no.1 priority.

TEAM SOLENT continued to put the pressure on leaders Romsey Town with a convincing win on the Test Park 3G against Lymington Town. Chabrecek had an early shot for Lymington that just missed the far post. Danquah was put in by an E Taylor pass but his shot was blocked by Town keeper Cooper and the

keeper again did well when E Taylor had slipped past the defensive line. Fine strength by J Taylor to shake off a Town defender, he found E Taylor whose effort was blocked. Solent went in front on 32 minutes when Danquah drew a foul in the box and E Taylor [pen] buried the spot-kick firmly into the corner of the net. It soon became 2-0 with a great move as Skoczeń played the ball wide to Roche who swept past an opponent and crossed in, it got a touch off a defender in the middle and Danquah hit a well-controlled volley into the net. It was soon 3-0, a fine run by Roche took him into the box and a pass to E Taylor to apply the far post finish. The celebrations had barely dimmed when, practically with a blink of an eye, the ball went into the Solent net as Lopez was put in and shot low into the corner and four goals were scored in a seven minute spell. E Taylor, eyeing a first half hat-trick, showed fine control, a neat feign to get past a defender but his shot was blocked. HT: 3-1.

Cooper was alert in the opening minutes of the second half to thwart first Roche and then Danquah, the latter after fine control and pass in midfield by Skoczeń. More good Solent attacking play, featuring Roche, J Taylor and E Taylor, the latter being denied by Cooper’s block. Town got forward and won a free-kick that Hurford took and it came off the home side’s bar, whilst the same player’s cross was headed out to Chapman who shot wide. Wateridge found Danquah whose distant effort bounced in front of Cooper but the keeper held. A fourth Solent goal did come when they won a free-kick and eventually, after opponents had expressed their opinions, Noonan scored directly with a curling effort. An earlier substitution had seen J Taylor drop back to centre midfield and, with dainty feet, he got forward to work a shooting chance that was off target. It was J Taylor’s pass in midfield that put in Danquah to cleverly chip the ball over Cooper and Solent were home and hosed. Town finished with ten due to an injury, having used both of their subs. FT: 5-1. It was a decent game overall as all the Solent players did their bits to achieve a fully deserved victory. But mention of young N Taylor who was very composed in defence and it’s great to see coach Campbell lacing up those old ‘size nines’ again, albeit only for the final few minutes. So, I’d been to nine consecutive Solent games without a win - until tonight – and you, the intrepid reader has suffered this too! I thought I’d incurred the wrath of Sparkitus, the Solent mythical beast! Whatever I’d done to cause this, only a win at Bournemouth tomorrow (Tuesday) will prove I have been fully forgiven – pretty please, oh Great One! Yes, I know what you are thinking but, although the return of a winning habit is very much worthy of celebration, I assure the reader that not a single drop of sauce has passed my lips!!
