A Note from the Chairman Good afternoon everyone We welcome the officials, players and supporters of Lymington Town football club, for this Sydenham’s Wessex League fixture. Lymington are on a fantastic unbeaten run and are currently level on points with us in ninth place with 47 points from 32 games, while we have four games in hand. Although we defeated Lymington earlier in the season, the improvement generated by their new manager Dave Lewis. will mean that we will have to be at our best to gain a favourable result. Our recent league form continued to falter with a 3-1 home defeat by Fareham Town last Saturday. Fareham played very well and are benefiting from a recent change of management. An excellent display from our goalkeeping coach, Lee Webber, standing in for the unavailable Bradley Banda, ensured the score line stayed at a respectable level. Lee spent many seasons as Fareham’s first choice goalkeeper and although his performance was outstanding, he will have been disappointed with the final score.
Jimmy and the management team will be concerned with the recent run of results, and dip in form, but they will be aware that they have to keep the players focussed and play through the current problems, we will see an eventual improvement in form. To date, we have had a very good season and at the time of writing, are still in the semi-finals of Wessex League Cup and the Southampton Senior Cup competitions. In their last away match in the Wyvern Challenge Cup 3rd round at Salisbury, the reserves put up a gallant performance against a strong Salisbury reserve side, to lose on penalties, after the match finished at 1-1. Goal scorer was Giovani Landu. This was followed up last Monday evening, with a fine 2-1 home win against Laverstock & Ford. Goals scorers were O’Shea McDonald and Lewis Danquah. The reserves are currently in sixth position in the table and with 10 games to play, are still in with a great chance of a top three finish. Manager Robbie Slack is doing a grand job and we wish him well for the remaining games. Enjoy your afternoon!

Team Solent FC play on the university’s newest facility at Test Park - a multiple sports complex with a 3G pitch, rugby and football pitches. The men’s and women’s teams are predominantly made up of current university students, supplemented by alumni, staff and a few external players. In keeping with the nature of university sport, the team personnel changes substantially from year to year as students graduate.

The Opponents: Lymington Town FC Lymington can be traced back to 1876 when President of the club, Sir Harry Burrard-Neale presented a tent, balls, poles and flags – the minimum requirement for Association football at the time. Sir Harry also allowed the use of a meadow, and this was the current site of the club, Lymington Sports Ground. Lymington Sports Ground has been home to unrivalled success over the years, especially in the early to late 1990’s when the club won several honours at Wessex League level under the tutelage of Trevor Williams and then Derek Binns. In the summer of 1998 the club moved to Fawcett Fields, home of New Milton, and amalgamated with their local rivals to become ‘Lymington & New Milton’. A group of local enthusiasts decided that football should remain in the Town and this led to the re-formation of Lymington Town FC. This led to a battle with the football administrators and the club were eventually granted acceptance into Hampshire Division Three for the 1998-99 season. Former Southampton FA cup winner David Peach was in charge for the first season, leading the club to a creditable third-place finish in the league. Ex-Chelsea defender David Stride and Andy Leader took over the baton before John Pyatt was appointed manager with Gary Squires. John made huge progress with Town with his efforts culminating in a League Cup Final victory over Bournemouth in 2006-07. With John Pyatt leaving, South African born Wayne Lockey was appointed manager.

Despite narrowly avoiding relegation in his first season, the club achieved a decent run in the FA Carlsberg Vase. In the 2009-10 season, former Andover and Bashley midfielder Jeremy Stagg was appointed manager, but left the Sports Ground and assistant boss Dave Morris stepped up as manager. Fortunes dramatically changed on the pitch as the club suffered a shocking run of one win in twenty games at the end of the season, narrowly avoiding relegation to Division One. For the 2010-11 season, Town appointed brothers Stuart and Matt Hussey as the club’s new management team. Despite mixed fortunes, the club considered it a step in the right direction. However, after a very disappointing start to the 2011-12 season, they left. The club moved fast to appoint Andy Leader who had a massive rebuilding job as all but four players left. He did a sterling job with assistants Matt Dunford and Dave Gray, and after the expected start of mixed results, the club finished the season very strongly with a run of six wins and a loss in the final seven games. Season 2012-13 saw another exodus of players, with new coach Stuart Doling rebuilding the squad, including a whole new reserve side. After a poor start, the first team found themselves in the bottom two at Christmas. A good run in the New Year saw us move up to third, however Andy decided to leave us just before the end of the season and Stuart stepped up to take the manager’s role. Finishing the season on a high, we finished well clear - points wise - of the relegation zone and great performances in the Russell Cotes
Cup saw us reach the final against Gosport, but in awful conditions we lost out 2-1. Season 13/14 has seen Stuart Doling and Matt Dunford adding players to last year’s squad, and has sent a strong message to them all on the way he wants them to play. Stuart, Matt and the committee are also determined to return the club to its “family” origins. Sadly, despite an encouraging start with a positive run through to Christmas, the second half of the season saw us drop into the bottom half of the league, although we were always well ahead of the bottom five clubs. However, at the end of March, Stuart decided to walk away, leaving us with barely enough players to fulfil two sides. Matt stayed on and helped us through to the end of the season and the players really stepped up too. The close season saw us actively working hard to find a replacement, and this came with the return of John Pyatt, much to the delight of everyone. John and his management team of Nic Jones, Warren Kenna and Bob Sullivan
gave the club a major boost and a successful season was enjoyed by everyone at the club, finishing a very creditable 9th, 7 points clear of 10th position. For season 15-16, we lost three important players to rival Sydenham’s clubs, but JP worked hard to find suitable replacements. He has also added Stuart Kenna to his management team replacing Nic Jones. For season 16-17, more changes to the management team have been seen with JP moved aside. Also planned at sometime during the season is a major upgrade to the clubhouse having obtained a serious grant from the Football Foundation, matched by the local council. As a result of JP stepping aside, the club appointed Dave Lewis and Dave Herbert to run the football. Jack Odam, recovering from his serious knee injury, is also helping with the coaching.

Sydenhams League (Wessex) Cup - Quarter Final
IT was back to League Cup action where Team Solent, the holders, entertained Division 1 mid-table side Tadley Calleva on a rather ‘stodgy’ Test Park surface. Solent started well as a teasing WallerLassen cross from the left found Orvis at the back stick and his close in header came off the post and the same player was able to prod home the rebound. Thorn, back in the Solent side following injury, received a return pass from Obeng and shot over. The

early stages of the game suggested business was back to usual for Team Solent following Saturday’s heavy league defeat. However, Tadley’s Denham received a low ball in from the right and found the side netting to suggest that Solent still had work to do. Obeng had three stabs at the ball from well inside the six-yard box following an Orvis cross but it appeared that he had fouled the keeper on the third attempt after his two previous lunges were blocked.

A good run by Tennant for Tadley on the left and he found Vickers who tried to steer the ball home but Sparks keeper Banda saved. Tennant got past a home defender but his effort, albeit firm, was straight at Banda. There were stoppages in the half as both Nolan and Pitts received knocks 1-0. Tadley had the better of it in the second half as Solent had to work hard defensively but struggled to find their attacking rhythm through most of it. Banda saved a firm and low effort by Tennant whilst a WallerLassen free-kick for the Sparks produced a White header that went wide. With the game progressing into its latter stages Tadley created chances as Hamilton’s cross just missed Denham’s head. The visitors levelled on 81 minutes when initially Thorn tackled well to concede a corner and from that, taken by Hamilton, the ball was allowed through to the far post where Tennant headed in, a goal which Tadley did deserve. Just after, Hamilton’s shot from the left was matched by a good diving save by Banda whilst Tennant put a half-volley over the bar. Tadley could have won it in stoppage time as Denham was in on Banda but the keeper blocked the shot with his trailing leg. FT: 1-1.

Team Solent had ‘been here before’ in the previous two rounds of this competition to defeat both Brockenhurst and Portland United. However, four of their ‘spot-kickers’ from those matches were missing for the latest ‘pen drama’. The Solent kicks were well taken whilst Banda blocked Dallimore’s effort with his legs and made a cracking save diving to his left to push out Hamilton’s firm kick, one that stung his hands. A cheeky dinked effort by Waller-Lassen executed the final blow. Solent weren’t at their fluent best on the night but they still retain a hold on the cup. The semi-final will be away to Sholing.
