A Note from the Chairman Good evening everyone We welcome the officials, players and supporters of Tadley Calleva football club, for this evening’s Sydenham’s Wessex League Cup quarter final tie. Although Tadley currently occupy a mid-table position in the Wessex Division One table, we can expect a hard fought match and we will need to be in good form to progress to the semi-final stage of the competition. Our Wessex Premier League match away to Portland United, scheduled for last Tuesday (15th), was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
The SSU Bucs firsts were unfortunately eliminated from the BUCS Western Conference Cup quarter final, by University of Bath seconds. The score at the end of extra time was 2-2 and the penalty shoot - out ended 3-4 to Bath. SSU goal scorers were Durate Martins and Giovanni Landu I would like to thank everybody for attending tonight’s match, your support is greatly appreciated. Have an enjoyable evening. Best wishes

The men’s first team also compete in the FA Cup and FA Vase each season, as well as being previous winners of the Southampton FA Senior Cup on four occasions. Team Solent also has a highly successful women’s football section, now competing in Southern League Division 1 and recent winners of BUCS Division 1.

Team Solent FC play on the university’s newest facility at Test Park - a multiple sports complex with a 3G pitch, rugby and football pitches. The men’s and women’s teams are predominantly made up of current university students, supplemented by alumni, staff and a few external players. In keeping with the nature of university sport, the team personnel changes substantially from year to year as students graduate.

The club was formed as Tadley F.C. In 1989.They joined the Hampshire League Division Three in 1994, finishing runnersup in 1995–96, gaining promotion to Division Two. The club changed its name to Tadley Town F.C. In 1999 and joined Division One upon reorganisation. In 2004, they changed their name to their present name and entered the Wessex Football League Division Three. promotion as their ground did not meet the requirements for the Premier Division. Since then the team has remained in Division One. In the 2010–11 Campaign they reached the final of the Basingstoke Senior Cup losing to Thatcham Town F.C. 4–1. In September 2014, the club recorded the best result of its modern history, defeating Basingstoke Town F.C. On penalties in the Hampshire FA Senior Cup at the Soccer AM Stadium (formerly ‘The Camrose’) after a 2-2 draw in 90 minutes. Brett Denham and Andrew Charsley scored the goals.

TWO of the ‘chasing pack’ met at Test Park, both hoping to make some headway on runaway league leaders Moneyfields. The Team Solent line-up showed changes following the previous week’s game with Croydon in the FA Vase, with skipper Jesse Waller-Lassen out with an injury, whilst Lee Webber continued to deputise in goal for Bradley Banda. Obeng had a couple of early chances for the Sparks, first he received a Sheedy pass

and shot over and then got on the end of an Olumuyiwa cross to send a header goal-wards that Scott tipped round the post. Webber made a save to deny Easter who received a Baldacchino pass. A teasing Solent cross came in from the right and Warren, for the visitors, got his head to it but Scott dived across to keep out a possible own goal. From the corner, Nolan’s back header at the far post was cleared by Warren on the line. ‘Porchy’ took the lead when a back-pass landed short and was seized upon by Easter, who laid it across to Baldacchino who was left with a simple finish. The goal spurred the visitors for a while as Ramsey’s shot was saved by Webber and a far post header by Kirby from a corner, drifted back across goal and was knocked off the line by Pitts. Webber was again called upon, this time saving from Baldacchino who was found by Easter. Solent got forward and the visitors survived a dangerous free-kick on the left dead-ball line. The Sparks won a corner at the end of the first half; Adekunle took it and his delightful curling flag-kick found its way inside the near corner to level it up. HT: 1-1. The woodwork took a battering in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half. First, in the opening 45 seconds, Clarke crossed in for AFC to the far post where Baldacchino smacked it off the underside of the bar and out (NB: shades of Croydon!) and, shortly after, Bye passed to Easter whose low shot crept off the far post and was cleared by White. At the other end, Sheedy’s cross was fisted onto the bar by Scott, it came down menacingly and Nolan’s close range header came off Evans chest on the line. The midfield sparring in this half was of high quality by both sides but the moves usually broke down due to two solid defences. Sheedy crossed in,

Obeng dummied well but Nolan’s effort was deflected clear whilst a decent ‘Porchy’ effort by Milroy from distance went wide. Changes were made by both sides as the game headed into the latter stages. Nolan cleared well from Baldacchino after Kirby had played a pass inside. Solent took an 87th minute lead as, practically from nothing, Mitford picked the ball up in space and unleashed a blinding 35-

yard shot from the left that flashed inside the near post – yet another quality strike from the ‘Mitford repertoire’. Solent just needed to manage the game for the final minutes which they achieved. They almost scored again, Pitts playing a fine crossfield pass to Orvis, it was laid on to Thorn who forced Scott to tip over. FT: 2-1. There was little between them, both sides playing well and passing accurately considering the damp surface. Indeed, it was going to take something special to separate them and so it proved. Wiseman, once again, proved to be a competent captain in the absence of the ‘Guvnor’! Are Solent back in the title race? Well, they are certainly amongst what appears to be a sixclub scramble for the runners-up spot and, beyond that, who knows?! [Gary Day]
