Rich Davis:

A Stroke Story of Success

Medicare Open Enrollment October 15 – December 7 The Medicare annual open enrollment period is October 15 through December 7. This is the time when Medicare beneficiaries can reevaluate their coverage and make changes to their Part D drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans. We are now scheduling appointments during the open enrollment season. If you need assistance to evaluate your coverage, call SIH Second Act at 877.480.4040.

“It was Nov. 8, 2017, the day after my 61st birthday,” recalls Rich Davis of Carterville. “I had just finished a staff meeting in our Carbondale office, said goodbye to everyone and walked out to my truck to return to Carterville. I will never be able to tell you what I was feeling, but I realized something was wrong.” The otherwise healthy Davis was suffering from a stroke and needed immediate attention. His wife, Janie, raced to the Emergency Department at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale to find Rich, slurring his speech and unable to move his left side. Five minutes after arriving at the hospital, Esteban Golombievski, MD, a neurologist with SIH Brain and Spine Institute, confirmed Davis was having a stroke. A CT scan just four minutes later showed a blockage in the mid-cerebal artery. “The neurologist was telling me that Rich needed to have tPA, (tissue plasminogen activator, a treatment which helps to dissolve clots and improves blood flow) there were some risks, but he needed it,” Janie remembers. The tPA worked, but because of the severity of the stroke – a vertebral artery dissection – the decision was made to transfer Rich to BarnesJewish Hospital in St. Louis for a thrombectomy – surgical removal of the remaining clot. After about a week of treatment and recovery in St. Louis, SIH staff members arranged for Davis’ transfer to SIH Herrin Hospital for three weeks of inpatient rehabilitation. He still was what he calls “fuzzy,” and couldn’t move on his own, but he was headed home.

“They put me into rehab immediately. They would take me through physical rehab, speech therapy and occupational rehab every day,” he recalls. Davis continued to work daily with rehabilitation therapists. His work ethic and attitude earned their respect. Their compassion earned his. Janie says being back in Southern Illinois was key for Rich. With encouragement and support from his family, colleagues and the SIH rehabilitation staff, he learned to stand again, then walk, climb stairs and care for himself. He even had to learn to write again. He still keeps his first attempts at handwriting as a benchmark of how far he has come. Looking back, the Davises are grateful for the prompt and cooperative care Rich received at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The realtor couple is completely sold on SIH Rehabilitation. *Join us on September 30 for My Journey to Health eat and educate to hear Rich's story.

SPECIAL NEEDS It is the responsibility of the SIH Second Act member to notify the Second Act office at least two weeks prior to the published cancellation deadline for a trip or event (one week prior to the date of an educational program) or upon registration, whichever date is earlier, if he/she has a need which requires special accommodations in order to participate. Following an appropriate notification, all reasonable efforts will be made by the Second Act department manager to accommodate those special needs.

Physicians providing services at and admitting patients to Herrin Hospital, Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and St. Joseph Memorial Hospital are not employees of the hospital. If you or someone you know needed help of any kind, who would you turn to? These days, that question is not easily answered. Family and friends are not as close or available as they used to be, leaving some without a solid plan for who to call. This class is an exercise in sketching out a circle of support and troubleshooting areas where more support is needed either for yourself or for someone you know.

Taking great care of your heart to avoid cardiovascular disease is critical, but that shouldn't be your only motivator. There are many other reasons to proactively maintain a healthy heart. Now is the perfect opportunity to be more proactive. After all, it works hard - without breaks - to keep you alive, so you should do your part and return the favor.

Power of Attorney for Healthcare: Everyone Needs One In collaboration with SIU School of Law Civil Practice Clinic for the Elderly, SIH Second Act members can now receive assistance completing or updating this important document. What happens when you are in the hospital, unconscious and unable to make your own decisions? Who will do this for you? The power of attorney tells caregivers exactly this. It puts you in charge of deciding who can speak on your behalf, only in the situation when you cannot. Call 877.480.4040 to schedule an appointment to get your power of attorney for healthcare completed or updated. If you’ve been a patient of an SIH hospital service or SIH Medical Group, we can update this in your medical record.

5 Action Steps for Helping Someone in Emotional Pain

Participants must complete four of the six scheduled classes beginning with week one or two. For maximum benefit, all six classes are strongly recommended.

Suicide is complicated and tragic, but it can be preventable. It affects people of all ages, genders, races and ethnicities. By knowing how to get help and different warning signs, you can help save lives. 1. Ask

CULTIVATING SPACE: CARE FOR OURSELVES WHILE WE CARE FOR OTHERS Tuesday, October 22, 2019 | 7:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Register by October 11, 2019

John A. Logan College, Carterville Hancock Conference Center Rev. Ralph Brandon, PhD Sherrie Harlow, MSW, LCSW Rev. Deb Pollex, BS You are invited to partake in a day of spiritual care centered around making time for ourselves. Cultivating space is about allowing ourselves to grieve and to take a breath in times of life-trauma. Includes continental breakfast and lunch.

“Are you thinking about killing yourself?” Asking this question can be difficult, but studies show that asking at-risk individuals if they are suicidal does not increase suicides or suicidal thoughts. 2. Keep them Safe Removing or disabling the lethal means can make a difference, it may not be easy or pleasant, but reducing a suicidal person’s access to highly lethal items or places is an important part of suicide prevention. 3. Be There Listen carefully and learn what the individual is thinking and feeling. Research suggests acknowledging and talking about suicide may reduce rather than increase suicidal thoughts. 4. Help Them Connect Ideal people to connect them with could be a trusted individual, friend, spiritual advisor or mental health professional. It is also a good idea to save the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s number 1-800-273-TALK (8255). 5. Stay Connected

Register: SIH Call Center 866.744.2468

It is good to stay in touch after a crisis or after someone is discharged. Studies have shown the number of suicide death goes down when someone follows up with the at-risk person. Source: National Institute of Mental Health
