Remembering Mona Kerns

Just a reminder with winter

weather coming up. Weather is unpredictable, and to keep

Twenty years ago, SIH Second Act (formerly Senior Advantage) made its debut as a program for active adults over 50. At the helm was Mona Kerns. It’s with great sadness that on this 20th Anniversary year, we lost our first group leader.

our members safe, we follow school closings. Therefore, if we have a class in Carbondale and Carbondale public schools are closed due to weather, we will also close and not have the class. The same goes for any town.

So many wonderful comments came in from our members. In celebrating her life, we thought it would be lovely to share some sentiments. “Mona always made the bus trips fun and made everyone feel accepted like family. A very special lady who will always be remembered and loved. Heaven has gained another beautiful angel.” “Mona was a wonderful person! She was always working for others. I enjoyed working with her at SIH, through Second Act and through the Arthritis Foundation. She will be missed!” “What an amazing person and what a remarkable life. I am grateful that I got to travel to Kentucky with Mona. Thinking a bus load of Second Act members were at heaven's gate to welcome Mona.” “Mona was really good at whatever she did. Remembering and feeling very blessed to know her. She touched many hearts and mine was one of them.” “Mona was one of a kind and will live in our hearts forever.” “She made everyone her friend & was such to the end.” Thank you for the legacy, Mona. Your work lives on.

Tips to Help You Keep Your New Year’s Resolution Did you know more than half of all resolutions fail? Don't let that be you this year. Here's how to identify the right resolution to improve your life and how to achieve it. Beat the odds and become part of the small group of people that successfully achieve their goal! 1. Pick the right Resolution ● Your goal should be SMART ▪ Specific

• Way to change the behavior: Instead of staying up late to watch TV, carve out a special time each day to spend by yourself.

3. Make it Personal ● Find out what your “Cue” is and what you want to replace it with, this will help you pick a goal that is personal and means something to you 4. Leap over Resolution Hurdles

▪ Measurable

● Change is hard and hurdles will arise, so before they arise make sure you have a plan to jump over them.

▪ Achievable

● Here is a formula to help you overcome obstacles

▪ Relevant

▪ Wish: What do you want?

▪ Time-bound

▪ Outcome: What would the ideal outcome be? What will your life look like when you hit your goal?

2. Create your plan ● Before you can create a plan you first need to identify a habit that stands in your way ▪ For example: • Bad habit: I don’t get enough sleep at night

▪ Obstacle: You know yourself. What will try to stop you? What has sidelined you before? ▪ Plan: How will you get around it?

• Routine: I stay up too late watching TV

Remember no one is perfect, and your quest for your resolution won't be either. However, you can always get back on track.

• Reward: I`m entertained

Source: New York Times

• Cue: I feel like I need time to myself in the evening
