Colon Cancer

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness month, an excellent time for you to start thinking about prevention options that may save your life. Colorectal cancer can affect both men and women. It is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Colorectal cancer risks do increase with age, but being physically active, keeping a healthy weight, not overindulging in alcohol and not smoking are great ways to reduce the likelihood of this cancer. It is recommended that if you are 50 to 75 you be screened regularly.

Types of screenings include:

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

Stool Tests

A doctor does this test. They use a thin, flexible, lighted tube to check for cancer inside the rectum and lower third of the colon. This should be done every five to ten years.

1. Guaiac-based fecal occult blood test- uses the chemical guaiac to detect blood in the stool. It is a once a year test, you obtain the kit from your health care provider and take it home and return it to the doctor or lab. 2. Fecal immunochemical test – much like the first option, it is a kit done at home once a year, and it uses antibodies to detect blood in the stool. 3. FIT- DNA test- it is done every one to three years, and it looks for altered DNA in the stool. Each test has its advantages and disadvantages. Make sure to talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of each test before deciding the best option for you. You may be wondering, “Why should I be screened?” Millions of people in the United States are not being screened as recommended. They are missing the chance to prevent colorectal cancer or find it early when treatment often leads to a cure. Many times precancerous polyps and colorectal cancer do not always cause symptoms. You could have polyps or colorectal cancer and not even know it; this is why screenings are so important. Source: CDC.gov

Make Sure Illinois Counts ADULT MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING Friday, March 13 | 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Register: 618.457.5200 x67842 or by email fanta.saidou@sih.net Registration required by March 5

Our Savior Lutheran Church 700 S University Ave, Carbondale Did you know that you are more likely to encounter someone – a friend, family member, co-worker, or a member of your faith community – in an emotional or mental crisis, than someone having a heart attack? Mental Health First Aid teaches a 5-step action plan to offer initial help with confidence to people experiencing a mental health crisis, and to know how to connect them with the appropriate professional, peer, social or self-help care. Anyone in the community can take the course – everyone should. Sometimes, first aid isn’t a bandage, CPR or the Heimlich. Sometimes, the best first aid is YOU. This is a free training and a light continental breakfast and lunch are included.

Why would filling out the census matter to you? Not only does filling out the census help determine the number of legislative seats Illinois will have, it determines the amount of federal money Illinois receives each year. The federal money helps to support road construction, schools, hospitals, social service programs, and helps large companies decide if they want to build or bring new jobs to different states. In the 2010 census, Illinois estimated undercount resulted in a loss of $952 per person of federal funding. This resulted in a loss of $122 million for every 1 percent of the population not counted in the 2010 Census. It is crucial to fill out this simple paperwork. Census day is on April 1, 2020. There are several ways to respond online, by phone or mail. The U.S. Census Bureau keeps your census questionnaire answers confidential, and the information is not shared with other federal or state government agencies. So what is holding you back?
