We've Got Your Back O my aching back! Back pain is a complaint frequently heard by doctors and is a common health problem. In the last 20 years alone back pain has had a significant impact on individuals and families. Direct medical costs due to back pain have reached as high as $25 billion annually, which is a large strain on a family’s budget. So, what can we do? The International Association for the Study of Pain has suggested a multidisciplinary team approach to back pain. This approach includes Neurosurgery, Interventional Pain Management and Physical Therapy, all whom are specialists in spine rehabilitation. They all work together to come up with a personalized plan just for you. The main goal is to get you back to your highest level of function. The complexity of the spine, involving the mechanical nature of the musculoskeletal system, the neurological components of the spinal nerves and the underlying psychosocial factors, requires the knowledge of a comprehensive pain team. At the SIH Brain & Spine Institute, this team-based approach to evaluation and treatment brings expertise to you that no one discipline or specialization can achieve alone. Below are highlights of what our team can provide you: •

Nurse Navigation using a triaging tool to get you to the right place at the right time

Team-based approach to care with Neurosurgery, Interventional Pain Management, and Physical Therapy all discussing your case

An array of Interventional Pain treatments, from standard injections to stimulators and pain pumps

Multidisciplinary pre-op education to meet your expectations, satisfaction and outcomes

For more information, or to schedule an appointment with our team, please call the SIH Brain & Spine Institute at 618.351.4972.

Other Workshops Q & A on Afib Q: What is Afib or Atrial Fibrillation? A: Atrial Fibrillation is an irregular and often rapid heart rate that can increase your risk of stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Q: What are some symptoms of Atrial Fibrillation? A: Symptoms often include heart palpitation, shortness of breath and weakness. Q: What are some risk factors that can contribute to Atrial Fibrillation?

There are four stages to Atrial Fibrillation:

A: The main vascular risk factors include age, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, heart failure, sleep apnea, smoking, vascular/peripheral arterial disease and lastly genetics.

1. Paroxysmal - symptoms that come and go lasting a few minutes to hours

Q: What are the direct effects of Atrial Fibrillation?

2. Persistent - heart rhythm doesn’t go back to normal on its own

A: If not taken care of, Atrial Fibrillation can cause stroke, heart attack, and heart failure. Research has also suggested that people with untreated Afib can experience types of dementia.

3. Long-standing persistent - continuous and lasts longer than 12 months 4. Permanent - abnormal heart rhythm can't be restored

Q: How can you prevent Atrial Fibrillation?

Dr. Kritt's major takeaways:

A: Prevention is essential and you can do this by living a hearthealthy lifestyle. This may include eating a heart-healthy diet, increasing physical activity, avoid smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting caffeine and alcohol, and trying to reduce stress.

1. Atrial Fibrillation is a silent killer and should be taken seriously. 2. Current advancements in technology allow us to diagnose and manage Atrial Fibrillation effectively. 3. Prevention is the best policy.

Q: If you have Atrial Fibrillation, what are your options? A: There are a few options when it comes to Atrial Fibrillation: 1. Medication 2. Electrical Cardioversion – a medical treatment that uses electrodes to deliver shocks that reset normal heart rhythm

Dr. Kritt Practices at Prairie Cardiovascular in Carbondale 618.529.4455

3. Ablation -Minimally invasive procedure that uses radiofrequency, laser, or cryotherapy to destroy the areas of abnormal tissue Make sure to talk to your doctor to figure out the best solution for you. Q: Should you wait to treat Atrial Fibrillation? A: The simple answer is NO. Afib is a progressive disease. Untreated Afib can result in permanent damage. According to Prairie Electrophysiologist, Dr. Krittapoom Akrawinthawong, “If you let Afib come to your ‘house’ often enough, eventually it will stay.”
