Staying on Top of Breast Cancer New Service! Power of Attorney for Healthcare: Everyone Needs One In collaboration with SIU School of Law Civil Practice Clinic for the Elderly, SIH Second Act members can now receive assistance completing or updating their Advanced Directives. What happens when you are in the hospital and unable to make your own decisions? Who will do this for you? It puts you in charge of deciding who can speak on your behalf, only in the situation when you cannot. Call 877.480.4040 to schedule an appointment to get your power of attorney for healthcare completed or updated. If you’ve been a patient of an SIH hospital service or SIH Medical Group, we can update this in your medical record.

Breast Cancer, two words no woman ever wants to hear. With this month being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we have a chance to raise awareness about the importance of detecting breast cancer early. A simple mammogram, self-exam or clinical exam can help save a woman’s life. Know the facts One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and is the second leading cause of death among women. The good news is women can survive breast cancer if it is found early enough. Early Detection Some options to stay on top of detection include: Self-Breast Exam Forty percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump, so establishing a regular breast self-exam is very important. It is recommended to do one every month. Clinical Breast Exam Clinical breast exam is an exam performed by a healthcare professional who is trained to recognize many different types of abnormalities and warning signs. This type of exam is done once a year at your yearly checkup. Mammogram A mammogram is an x-ray that allows a qualified specialist to examine the breast tissue for any abnormalities. It can often show a breast lump before it can be felt. They are recommended for all women 40 and older every one to two years. SIH Breast Center is our region's leader in prevention and treatment of breast cancer. SIH was the first facility in Southern Illinois to bring patients 3D mammography. Our skilled and compassionate team uses the latest technology and is ready to help you. Call 800.360.6902 for more information on detection and prevention. Source: National Breast Cancer Foundation

Over the centuries, constipation has gone by many delicate euphemisms, but the problem itself refuses to budge. The condition can worsen co-morbidities like low back pain, muscle tone problems in people with neurological conditions and confusion in people with dementia. This is a condition that needs to be understood and managed.

Back pain affects most people at some point in their life. Most cases of back pain improve within a few weeks or months, but some people experience long-term repetitive pain. In this discussion, we will talk about the causes of back pain and treatment options, which can include physical therapy, medications, spinal injections and surgical options.

Other Workshops SIU School of Medicine Ribbon Cutting On August 15, 2019 SIU Family Medicine hosted a ribboncutting and open house for their new building. The new facility is a collaboration between Southern Illinois University and Southern Illinois Healthcare. It houses a medical clinic and is home to the SIU Family Medicine Residency Program and the SIU Physician Assistant Program. Chief Resident, Sohalb Sajjad, states the new facility will allow students to learn and practice together to enhance their learning environment. The project began in June of 2018, and was expected to take 18 months to complete. With hard work the project was completed six months ahead of schedule. The school's family medical clinic is located on the first floor. The clinic includes house labs, behavioral health rooms and a clinical lab for training students. The second floor houses the SIU School of Medicine's Family Medical Residency Program and Physician Assistant Program, classrooms, offices and an anatomy lab, as well as a lounge for students.

The anticipated benefit of the new SIU School of Medicine building will be retaining medical students in Southern Illinois. Students will complete all formal training right here in Carbondale.
