From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors jmitchscov@gmail.com

Let’s Live Our Lifestyle by Jim Mitchell With our tagline “It’s more than living, it’s a lifestyle,” we all proudly proclaim that we came to Sun City Oro Valley to truly enjoy an active, adult lifestyle. That’s why we have more than 140 clubs to satisfy the diverse interests of residents–from arts and crafts to cultural, dance, exercise, games, travel and more. In addition to enjoying various clubs, it’s important to remember that they are all led by resident volunteers. The same is true for more than 20 committees that help guide us. If you have interest and experience in an area, consider volunteering. With 2,488 homes and over $28 million in total common assets, running SCOV responsibly is a complex task. In that effort, we realize that there are differences of opinion in how it should be done and what our future should look like. But those differences can always be expressed in a civil manner. While it may be fun to commiserate with like-minded folks on social media, speculation, rumors and opinions usually fail to advance a cause. Instead, consider getting facts by asking questions under HOT TOPICS on our website or email committee and club chairs, staff or Board members. We will respectfully respond even if it’s not an answer you want to hear. For major issues, any group of residents can petition to have an initiative placed on the ballot by submitting a petition with signatures from 10 percent (249) of households. Lately, some opinions have been expressed in a vitriolic, divisive way, not just to Board members, but also to other residents. No matter which side of an issue you are on, that is not our proclaimed lifestyle. And it is time for it to stop. Like committee chairs, Board members are resident volunteers, but with three-year terms. In my third year, I know that those I’ve served with have been conscientious about their responsibilities for the leadership and financial stability of SCOV. And I know that most residents support us in our efforts. For that, we are thankful.

SCOV Homes a Good Investment Many of you have invested in various types of measures to grow your net worth. I’m sure you do the research and decide on which investments you believe will do you the most good. Some of you may also hire an investment advisor to help give you advice. You may have wondered how your investment in your home here at Sun City Oro Valley is doing. Here’s some information from public records we’d like to share with you: This year we’ve averaged six homes actively listed on the market each month. Many homes sell before being listed. As a result, we show the number of homes closed/sold in July = 20; June = 14; May = 20; April 24; March = 31; February = 17 and January = 9. You may be thinking selling that many homes is good, but what about the price? Are those who are selling getting a fair price? Here is your answer: Homes that sold in January averaged $226 per sq. ft. compared with June’s average of $257 per sq. ft.. That is a difference of $31 per sq. ft.. So, for a 2,000 sq. ft. home the price increased by $62,000 since January. And in the past year, the same 2,000 sq. ft. home increased in selling value a whopping $126,000 as the price per sq. ft. increased from $194 per sq. ft. in June of 2020 to $257 per sq. ft. in June of 2021. When you purchased your home in Sun City Oro Valley, it may have been one of the better (if not the best) investment decisions of your life. Thank you for investing in us, we’re glad you’re here!

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070

How It’s Made – Tipster Version I find the shows about “how something is made” fascinating. Recently, my granddaughter and I watched how rainbow sprinkles were made. Who knew so much effort and steps went into those colorful confections that dot that scoop of ice cream? That had me thinking about how the Tipster is made. You may not know how many steps go into producing this amazing communication tool for SCOV. So, let’s find out How the Tipster is Made. The Tipster production cycle takes about three weeks each month. It begins with creating the magazine template. The cover photo is then selected. The photo is submitted by talented residents and is an exciting start to the informational masterpiece within. The magazine’s text heading color is selected from a feature color found in the cover photo. This creates continuity throughout the magazine. Next, the articles are added. Articles are submitted through a web form from over 200 contributors, due by the 8th of each month. Those articles are then transferred into the month’s template, which is in Adobe InDesign. The process takes a large portion of production time over the three-week cycle. Any photographs submitted with the articles are formatted and placed in the magazine. Contact and building hours from page 2 are updated. Reports for new neighbors and financial information is placed. A draft is created and submitted to the Tipster Editorial Committee who reads the articles, fine tunes them, checks for accuracy and compliance with Tipster Article Standards such as the format for day, date, time and place, making those consistent throughout the magazine. The editors meet and discuss any ideas and suggestions for improvements. All those edits are transferred into the template. The columns are laid out in the template, announcements are designed and placed. Photo galleries with tag lines and photo credits are created. A second draft incorporates first draft corrections, announcements and photo galleries. This draft is reviewed by a smaller set of Tipster editors. Draft two changes are then made to the magazine copy. Our Tipster Editor, Layout & Designer, Marsha Dean is creating the ads, going through an approval process with the advertiser and then placing the ads in the magazine. When all these steps are completed, the document is uploaded to the printing company, printed, boxed and delivered to SCOV. Marsha creates a digital copy and Kat Peabody, our webmaster, uploads the document to the website and posts its availability to Facebook. While all these tasks are occurring, advertisers are contacting Lisa Orach and Monica Clark to inquire about placing ads. They are invoicing, tracking monthly receipts and receiving payment. Flyers are submitted to Pam Sarpalius and Coco Sullivan for approval. The flyers are either delivered to SCOV or printed at SCOV and then taken to the Auditorium for collation by Tempe and Dave Johnson and their team of Tipster collators. Once collated, the Maintenance Department, led by Ken Sandrock, distributes the collated Tipsters to SCOV buildings and staff maintains the stock where you may pick up your copy. And there you have How the Tipster is Made. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, September 2021

Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Hello Fall We sure had one great record-breaking monsoon season. The Catalina Mountains showed great green coverage, which we have not seen in a long time. As renovation of the Activity Center nears, I am searching for new activities for residents. Next month’s bus trip is to the Mesa Flea Market. Come home with some great finds, plus, you don’t have to drive. Please remember that my office door is always open, I always answer voice mails and emails, so pass on any ideas for fun events.

Community Services - Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 Patience and Communication We have been blessed (or cursed depending on your point of view) by all the monsoon activity in recent weeks. The good news is that the added rain is welcomed because we need it. But the bad news is that it makes plantings in our yards and common areas grow like crazy. This is the first really active monsoon that many of our newcomers have seen. Many of you who are newer residents or seasonal residents still have no idea of the impact the monsoon rains have on the growth of plantings and especially weeds. In prior messages during years when there has been little monsoon activity, I have suggested that you investigate preemergent herbicide for your yards so that there are fewer weeds. Some probably thought there was no need, because we haven’t gotten that many weeds. True to a certain extent. But this year’s moisture is reason to re-examine what preemergent will do for your yard. If you look at the weed growth in our community, it is astounding in comparison to the last two years. We ask four things of you during this period of growth: Patience – Plants and weeds will grow. Please be patient with landscapers and neighbors who are making an effort to address landscape problems. Communication – If you are a seasonal resident, please communicate with your neighbors to see if your yard has a weed problem. If you are a friendly neighbor of someone who is currently out-of-town, share a picture of just how stunning their weed problem has become. They probably have no idea. Research – Talk to a landscaper or google pre-emergent use in Arizona. Action – If, after thorough study, you see no issue, have pre-emergent applied to your yard. You will thank yourself when the next round of weeds do not appear. Your neighbors will be especially grateful. But in the meantime, please remove the weeds that have already graced your yard.

Keeping Your Resident File up to Date Remember to fill out an In-House Submittal Form online if you are going to have new underlayment installed on your roof and are using the same tiles.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Daily De-Stressing The message is clear: You have to find a way to keep your stress at a reasonable, healthy level and figure out how to put a damper on stress before it gets out of hand. Stress management is a key element of healthy living, It also goes along with other healthy lifestyle factors, such as eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight and staying active. One of the best ways to manage stress is through regular physical activity and exercise. Exercise reduces stress and improves health in so many ways. Physical activity can boost mood, improve energy and significantly improve both quality and quantity of sleep. Practice yoga, or find time each day to meditate. Simply take a few minutes to yourself. Switch off your computer and cell phone to disconnect and de-stress. Treat yourself to a mini vacation to escape from the daily grind. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis hours of operation are on page 2. Tuesday, September 14, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, September 15, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Republic Services scov@republicservices.com www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/trash

SCOV has a dedicated customer service representative with Republic Services. Many of you are aware of the labor challenges the country is currently experiencing, and Republic Services highly encourages residents to email any service issues rather than telephone, in order to receive the best service. Our representative can be reached at scov@ republicservices.com. This email is listed on the Republic magnet you received in your annual dues mailing. Visit our web page where you can find the following information: 1) Recycling: View a video and web page on what Republic takes in their recycling bins. Glass is accepted for recycling. 2) Holiday schedule: Check if you need to shift setting your bins out due to a holiday. 3) Report a problem: Missed pickup? Bin damaged? Click the REPORT A PROBLEM tab, fill out our form and Republic will receive a copy.

Aquatic Fitness Center Advisory Cliff Miller Architectural Review Kris Ahlstrand 510-693-5502 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) continues to remain extremely busy during these hot summer months with a minimum of 10 submittals to review at each of our twice-a-month Zoom meetings. Residents who submit complete applications gain speedy review and approval of their projects. One way to ensure a complete application and a project that meets the Development Standards for a Permanent Improvement is to have a pre-submittal meeting with ARC representatives. Before you begin preparing your application on the SCOV website, take the time to read all the directions, especially the specific items that must be included with your submittal. Use the drop-down menus: Members > Members Services > For Your Home > Read More > Start Submittal. The ARC members devote many hours year-round reviewing projects and then discussing them in Zoom meetings held every second and fourth Tuesday at 2 PM. We encourage anyone who is planning a project or just interested to join us online. The link to our meetings can be found on: Members > Committees > Architectural Review > Read More > Join ARC’s Zoom Meeting.

Artisan Center Renovation Task Force See SCOV calendar for meeting dates, time, and location

The Artisan Center Renovation Task Force (ACRTF) may meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month as needed. The SCOV website will have current meeting notices. The SCOV website (Members > Committees > ACRTF) provides the Charter for the task force. The website also provides “A Discussion of the Existing and Future Facility Requirements for the Artisan Clubs of SCOV.” An informal working group comprised of representatives from each of the artisan clubs met over the winter of 2021 to research and write this discussion paper. The ACRTF is now building on the previous work and will identify and work with an architect to develop a comprehensive recommendation for the renovation of this 34-year-old Artisan Center facility.

Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

Watch “This Week in SCOV” email for information about this year’s paper directory. New residents are unlisted by default. This includes those who move within SCOV. Renters aren’t included, unless they’re long-term year-round residents. I use the monthly SCOV Resale Report to update the directory database. Those who have sold their homes are removed from the database, and the new owners are added as unlisted. To be listed in the directory or to change your information, the preferred method is to complete the online form “To change your directory listing….” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center. You can choose to be listed and still have address, phones, or emails unlisted in either the paper book or the online directory. Email addresses are not published in the paper book.

Consumer Referral - Vendor List Susanna Moran scovconsumerservices@gmail.com

The Vendor List is on the SCOV website. After logging in, go to Members > Member Services > Consumer Referral Vendor List. The Vendor List may also be viewed at the monitor’s desk in the Activity Center during business hours until renovation begins. Please check the Vendor List often, as changes are made frequently. Vendors should email Susanna Moran to inquire about applying to be on the Vendor List.

Finance-Budget Quarterly Zoom meetings on Mondays. Check SCOV calendar for dates and times.

The Finance-Budget Committee (FBC) meetings and Quarterly Financial Conversations with Residents are held quarterly. At times, when necessary, the FBC will meet more frequently (e.g., budget preparation, audit results, and when information is requested by the Board of Directors). Find meeting dates, times, location and information on the SCOV website. The latest financial information is also available on there.

Holiday Lights Chair Linda Bretz 603-459-4219 lindaebretz1@gmail.com

The Holiday Lights Committee is enjoying our monsoon season while considering our work that needs to start in November. The ornaments for this year have been made, and the committee’s focus will soon be working with maintenance staff on additional electric outlets needed for this year’s display. Outside décor focus for 2021 will be around The Views Restaurant and the Welcome Center as the Activity Center will be under renovation. A Hanukkah display is on our wish list for décor, but we need a volunteer to help guide us in that direction. Progress is being made finding residents who are excited to share their holiday spirit for this year’s brand new Holiday House Tour, scheduled for December 4. A few interior decorators will help enhance the holiday décor of these homes. Florists willing to donate their skills for free advertising on the tour are also being sought. Our Angels (SCOV volunteers) will help set up and participate during the tour. A few more volunteer homes beautifully decorated inside for Hanukkah as well as Christmas are needed. Contact Linda Bretz nashuachristmas@comcast.net or 603-459-4219 if you know of any stunning homes, decorators or florists who might consider participating in this new event. Meetings will start in early October to get acquainted and discuss details.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 The Rains Came in a Big Way Our monsoon rains arrived in a big way, as did many weeds. Keep an eye out for desert broom and spurge, and remove them early. Please make every effort to stay ahead of the weed situation in your yard. With all the rain received, new growth on trees occurred. Note that trees must be kept trimmed more than seven feet above sidewalks to not interfere with pedestrians and for visibility of stop signs at corners. Most bean pods are down now and should be removed from the ground in your yard. Our committee issues a special thanks to all residents who work diligently to keep their yards in good shape throughout the year, especially in our hot summer months, and more so with the monsoon season. Keep up the good work.

Covid is still creating problems. The new Delta variant has made the Posse board and SCOV management re-evaluate starting patrols in October. Not knowing what will happen next, we agree that the safety of Posse volunteers is paramount. As a result, patrols will continue to be on hold until January 2022, when we will re-evaluate the situation and, hopefully, be able to resume patrolling. Once we begin again, we will be looking for additional Posse volunteers so remember, we need you. We request you be available six hours a year (two three-hour shifts). Call Linda for more information. In the meantime, continue to watch out for your neighbors. Be healthy and stay safe.

Golfing experience that provides professional and friendly service, mountain views and excellent conditions.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086

As many of you are aware the decision was made to skip the majority of overseeding this fall which will allow us to remain open those three weeks we would normally close in September and October. We will not have golf cart restrictions of cart path only for two weeks in October. Here are some key factors for not overseeding this season: 1. Health of the Bermuda grass base. Skipping overseeding will allow the Bermuda grass an entire growing season to re-establish a deep root system. 2. The golf course maintenance staff will be able to concentrate on other areas of the golf course that have been neglected over the years. The bunkers will be cleaned up and sand added, desert areas trimmed, trees trimmed near tee complexes to create better views, roots pruned around edges and repair of drainage areas that are chronically wet. 3. The weeds that have contaminated the fairways will be removed. The Poa Annua that appears in the late winter/ early spring will be removed with chemicals and a pre-emergent applied to prevent new Poa plants. The goose grass that appears during the summer will be prevented with a pre-emergent in the late spring. These processes cannot be performed when overseeded with ryegrass. 4. Fairways and greens will be painted to appear overseeded. Painted dormant fairways can provide an excellent playing surface with firm conditions and extra ball roll; however, dormant fairways will also experience some wear and tear from traffic during the winter because the grass is growing slowly, if at all. The key is to be able to control golf cart traffic for less wear on the course.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

This year the weather conditions have been different all around the country. Tucson finally received a wet monsoon for the first time in several years. The Pacific Northwest endured its hottest temperatures on record with highs exceeding 110 degrees. The reason the temperatures in the northwest part of the country are important to Arizona is because that is where most of the grass seed is produced. Anybody who has seen our golf course in June, when the temperatures are 110 degrees, knows that kind of heat severely damages ryegrass. As a result, the supply of ryegrass this year was reduced by 40 to 50% which doubled the price of seed. This price increase, combined with many different factors led to the decision to not overseed this winter. The last couple of years, the idea to skip overseeding the golf course was discussed for several beneficial reasons. The major reason was to give the Bermuda grass a break after 20-plus years of constant overseeding. Each year a couple holes were not overseeded, but not the whole course, resulting in damage to the underlying Bermuda grass. Goosegrass and Poa Annua weeds which have infested the fairways can easily be removed when the fairways are not overseeded. Turf conditions in the fall and spring will be im-

9

proved and more consistent. With extra time available, sand traps and desert edges can receive more attention to improve their conditions. The driving range tee and most of the tee boxes will be overseeded, so divots can be repaired throughout the winter.

September is a great time to practice your short game. According to GolfInfoGuide.com Nick Faldo has three putting tips for seniors: 1. Keep the eyes directly over the ball. This allows for the putter to swing in a straight line backwards and forwards. 2. Maintain head position through the putting stroke. This provides the stability needed to perform consistent and reliable action. 3. Make the hands passive during the stroke. If the wrists are used, a flicking action occurs and club face control is lost. Remember to have fun while playing and join us every Wednesday. As things seem to become more and more normal, our business is steadily increasing. Please keep in mind that as we get busier, if everyone orders food at the same time, food will take a little longer to get out to the table. If you show up for live entertainment, don’t wait until everyone else shows up to place your order. The more spread out the orders are, the faster the food is delivered to the table. We are actively trying to hire more cooks, but it has been a challenge. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to serving you.

Can you snip and stuff? Are you a pet lover? So many of us are. We have a simple and easy project you can help with on Tuesday afternoons. Sewing is definitely not a requirement. We just snip away at washable fabric and stuff pillows for our furry little friends at the Humane Society. The beds come in many different colors and sizes that any animal would love. Quilters

Our first meeting Tuesday, September 14, will bring a lot of show-and-tell for everyone to share. I hope everyone has been working on their challenge due in November. The theme, your interpretation of the Coronavirus, must include orange fabric. The challenge luncheon is in November, so you still have time. We will bring back our Accuquilt dies, beginning with the most popular one, the pineapple pattern. This class will meet Thursday, September 16, 1 PM, in the Sewing Room. A supply list will be distributed. The last meeting of the month, Tuesday, September 28, will feature Stephanie giving a demo on a clear plastic faced project bag. Day retreat is in October; signups at this meeting. Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts

If you are interested in being part of our group, stop into the Sewing Room Tuesday mornings or contact Coni Arseneau or Carrie Wiley. The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group falls under the umbrella of the Thimblelenas. To be a participant in our group, one must join the Thimblelenas for a $5 per year fee. Our group does not charge an additional membership fee. We do provide training and materials for those wanting to learn the art of rug hooking. Most of our members are hooking either a tapestry, wall hanging, pillow or other hooking projects. Rarely has anyone hooked a rug, due to the amount of time it would take to complete. We welcome others to our group who are interested in alternative arts using fiber.

Hello women of SCOV. Praying you have all been experiencing a great summer. Those of us who stayed in town were witness to the wettest July ever in Tucson since 1894. What an awesome show of God’s power in the monsoon storms and much needed rain. We are so excited to begin a short (nine weeks) study of the book of Philippians, “How to Have Joy!” How do I live the Christian life joyfully regardless of people or circumstances? What is the purpose of suffering? Do I have the “mind of Christ”? Discover true, deepdown joy in your life that the world cannot take away. Our study will be Wednesdays, October 6 through December 8, with the week of Thanksgiving off. If you are new to SCOV or just have questions, call Elaine Farmer 253-318-0018.

Many of us admire Holly for her determined campaigning for a seat in the Legislature here in LD 11. She has been active in building energy among the Democratic clubs in our area. To expand voter participation, we will invite you to participate in our ongoing project to reach out to first-time voters. By writing post cards to potential voters during the year as part of the nationwide PostCards project, we hope to encourage them to stay involved and look toward the next election.

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

It’s still summer here and a great time to commit to a core strengthening exercise routine. Why not try Pilates? Classes are still small making it a good time to learn. Sun City offers Joseph Pilates mat classes twice per week on Mondays and Thursdays. The benefits that come from performing specific strengthening and stretching exercises strengthen the body’s core muscles (your abdomen and back). The exercises increase spine mobility and build flexibility. More benefits include better balance and muscle tone and increased stamina. Because the classes are designed for seniors, all exercises can be modified and are taught by two experienced instructors. The cost is $8/class with annual club dues $20 pp. Please join us or just come by and watch. Call Mary .

The game contains 100 letter tiles which form words from two to seven letters. A seven-letter word is known as a “bingo” and gives the player 50 additional points to basic letter score. Making a bingo is easier than you might think. Hasbro, who currently owns the rights to Scrabble sells approximately two million games annually. If your curiosity is peaked, drop by any Friday afternoon between 1 and 3 PM. We welcome anyone who wants to play and maybe make new friends. All are welcome.

Birders Group Peggy Smith 520-344-0991 pdsaz@aol.com www.scovbirding.wix.com/birdersgroup Next meeting Fri., September 24, Catalina Vista/Art Studio, 4 PM The Rufouswinged sparrow is one of more than 25 species of sparrows in Arizona and one of a few to be found in SCOV. Sparrows, in general, are not very flashy John Smith photo birds and are among the hardest species to ID. Of the many sparrow species, this little seed eater is special because of its very limited range. Mostly a Mexican bird, in the U.S. it can be found only in this small area of Arizona. Because of that, it is often a high-priority target for birders visiting from other countries or states. It has a song that accelerates like a ping-pong ball trapped between the paddle and the table as the paddle descends. The 92-member Birding Group will resume limited activities in late September and move back to full action starting in October. Beginner or experienced, get on our mailing list and come join us.

Hiking Pres. Georgene Porter gvporter@live.com Scheduled hikes are posted on the website www.scovhiking.org

Think of the warm sunshine on your face, the gentle sound of the wind, and the hard rocky feel of the trail under your boots. The National Park Service believes these experiences are not only enjoyable, but they’re good for you, too. Hiking has been proven to have many health benefits, ranging from the physical exercise you get when out on the trail, to the emotional and psychological relief that comes from being in nature. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends 150 minutes a week of moderateintensity exercise, such as brisk walking. But it can be more fun to hike with friends, meet new people or even discover a new trail, all the more reason to consider joining our hiking club. Check our online schedule of hikes for details. New members need to first take an Orientation Hike which will be offered on Wednesday, September 8.

Did you know seniors 70 and older pitch from a shorter distance with less effort and more accuracy? The shorter distance also makes the game more fun for women. Resurfaced courts and installed wind screens This summer the pickleball courts have been busy, not only with members playing, but also improvements to the courts. The Pickleball Club would like to thank SCOV and the Maintenance Department for their great work improving the pickleball courts. They installed three fans at courts 3-5. They also installed wind screens on courts 1, 2 and 5, rewrapped the vinyl chairs at the patio between the pickleball and tennis courts and, to top it off, all five courts were resurfaced. They look like tournament courts now. The ball holders and the paddle racks were repainted, and the poles around the courts were painted as necessary. We are proud of our courts now. Hopefully, in the future, there will be more courts built to accommodate the increase in play during the fall, spring and winter months. Thanks again for your hard work, SCOV and maintenance.

Tennis Club members are smiling more these days, because the oven-like temperatures and heavy monsoon rains of the summer are ebbing. Players can sleep longer, since they don’t have to get up at 6 AM to beat the heat. With the exception of balls rolling under some of the new fences, club members are very happy with the extensive renovaton of the Mountain Vista tennis facility. Spurge Reminder Please remove spurge from your yards. Spurge is a creeping, lowgrowing weed that is often found in the cracks of driveways and the gaps between the sidewalk and street. It also grows abundantly in river rock.

Vistoso Helpful Hands Dispatcher 520-447-0077 Barb McNeill bjmac68@gmail.com

Vistoso Helpful Hands volunteers have been quite busy the past few months in several help categories: Our handyman installed key lock boxes for fire department access to homes. Other volunteers provided transportation to doctor offices and meal pick-up from The Views Restaurant. Dispatchers provided paid referrals for in-home personal care and patient advocate services; assisted client relatives with advice and referrals for house cleaning; provided assisted living referral services for downsizing, packing and moving and were on call for dog walking. We provide short-term, year-round help (approximately three weeks or 12 visits). Call our dispatcher and if we do not answer immediately, leave your name and number for a call back.

Sharing a Youth On Their Own (YOTO) student story: In high school and on her own, Rashel frequently found herself without the resources she needed to succeed. She dreamed of going to college, but struggled daily to get by. One day, a teacher told her about YOTO. Rashel could receive free food, toiletries and more, as well as a monthly stipend. Moreover, YOTO staff were able to help her not only graduate from high school, but apply for post-secondary financial aid. Today Rashel is a junior at UArizona; she hopes to someday become the CEO of Youth On Their Own!
