Association News

From the Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors edeeterscov@gmail.com Why the Community Needs You by Elaine Deeter It is that time of year when our Nominating Committee is gathering names of qualified candidates who are interested in running for the SCOV Board in 2024. We have many qualified people in our community, and I encourage you to run. Two years ago, I was a person who thought it was time to step up and become a candidate to support my community. Being involved in various areas of our community and attending meetings is important, as well as devoting the time and energy it takes. Loving our community as I do and caring for all people, both old and new residents, it was important for me to give back. It's important to ask yourself why you want to serve on this Board. You should not have an agenda. Think about what is best for everyone and the future of this wonderful community. You won't make everyone happy with your decisions or thoughts. We have a diverse community relative to age, finances and the reasons they moved here. Keep in mind what is important to everyone and not just yourself. When you are elected to the Board, you work as a team. Listen to the other members' thoughts and ideas and think about what is best for the community, the Association and future Boards. We have many opportunities to make our community even better in the New Year. Be grateful and take a moment to reflect on our blessings, our beautiful homes and wonderful neighbors. Many thanks to our Association and all the helpful and hardworking people that support us all every day. Wishing you a joyful and peaceful holiday season. May this time of year bring you happiness and a chance to create wonderful memories with family and friends.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Reach Out to a Lonely Neighbor I hope all of you have a very happy holiday season. This is a wonderful time of the year. I love the upbeat spirit that is so pervasive and the joy and happiness experienced is contagious. Many in our community have worked hard all year to provide presents for needy children who otherwise might not get any. I’ve seen WC3 lined with tables stacked with all kinds of crafts for underprivileged children. This happens year after year, and I know that hundreds, if not thousands, of children’s lives have been blessed by the goodness of Sun City Oro Valley residents. I am also aware of those within our community who may be alone with no one to share the holiday season. I’m most concerned about these residents. I know Vistoso Helpful Hands in SCOV provides services for our residents. They are a great organization led by a wonderful resident, and yet they can’t do everything. I admit that I’m guilty of boasting to my Large-Scale Manager colleagues that SCOV has some of the best volunteers in the whole world. And it is to SCOV residents that I’m making this humble request. This holiday season, please look around your neighborhood and see if there is someone who is alone and would welcome an invitation to visit, go for a hike, go for a walk, have a drink, share a meal or share a day. It may take some work on your part, because some of these folks don’t like to be made a fuss over and are generally pretty quiet. But, if I know the character of SCOV residents, I believe that many of you could and will have a huge impact on the life of your lonely neighbor. May you be blessed as you continue to make SCOV a great place to call home.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Safety SCOV communicates with Pima County Emergency Management and the Town of Oro Valley Emergency Management. They recommend that our residents sign up for CodeRED emergency notifications to receive alerts sent out by emergency management entities to let people know of issues that arise in Oro Valley, such as wildfires in the vicinity. To sign up for CodeRED, visit www.orovalleyaz.gov > Community > Emergency-Management > Register for Oro Valley's CodeRED notifications. They have a page dedicated to this service with directions to sign up. One of the great qualities of Sun City Oro Valley (SCOV) is the strong sense of community. People get to know each other, their neighbors and those in their clubs, or at the restaurant or gym. SCOV residents care for each other and watch out for each other. You are especially mindful of our residents who are aging in place and may need an extra check-in from time to time. It’s a really special thing that happens here.

The Library has two author events and a holiday book sale planned for this month. “I explore Arizona one hiking trail and one restaurant at a time,” said Roger Naylor. Roger will present information about many of the wonderful activities that Arizona has to offer. His books cover state parks, twisting back roads, small towns, ghost towns and diners with sizzling burgers on the grill. Don’t miss this presentation Wednesday, December 6, 10 am, Catalina Vista. Free tickets will be available in the Library prior to the event. Several of his books will be available for purchase and signing. The Astronomy Club and the Library are teaming up for a joint presentation by Dr. David Levy. Dr. Levy is a worldrenowned Canadian astronomer who now resides in our local area. In addition to co-discovering periodic comets, he has written several articles for astronomy magazines and published books on comets and minor planets. This presentation is scheduled for Thursday, December 21, 5 pm, Activity Center. See Astronomy Club article on page 19 for free ticket information. The holiday book sale begins Monday, December 11. Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Why Use Technology? Wearable technology can help you track your heart rate while exercising, if worn correctly. It can provide data to show you where you started, where you’re headed, and help you set goals for where you want to be. Tracking your heart rate helps you learn what is normal for your body when you’re resting and your working capacity. This can help you track the progress of your workouts through intensity and duration. A chest monitor is going to be the most accurate when it comes to heart rate monitors. While a watch gives a good reading of your heart rate, the closer you place the device to your heart, the more accurate the reading will be and the less room for error. Tracking your workouts also helps keep you accountable. Many devices allow you to look back at previous workouts. Having a log of these workouts can help you see that the work you’re putting in is making a difference in your health and fitness. No matter the brand, there are various options when it comes to watches that can help track your workouts, including Apple, FitBit®, Garmin and more. You can track your workouts, calories burned, steps and even connect with friends to keep each other accountable. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held Thursdays, 1 pm. Stop in and sign up. Classes are limited. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns regarding the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2. Tuesday, December 12, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, December 13, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Tuesday, December 26, the AFC spa will be closed for cleaning until 1 pm.

Aquatic and Fitness Center Advisory Muriel DeLaVergne-Brown 541-999-4018 muriel@phaspirations.com First Wed., 11 am, WC1

The Aquatic and Fitness Center Committee had many successes the past year. We look forward to 2024 and an open house in January. The committee is planning the event and will have more details next month. If you would like to submit a meeting agenda item, SCOV has a new form on the committee page, and the information will be forwarded to committee chairs.

Architectural Inspection Group Conveyance Coordinator Jack Mooney 520-917-8087, scoroval@ciramail.com

SCOV keeps a file of pertinent information on each lot within the community. Over the years, it has been noted that having emergency contact information on file has been helpful. If you wish to have that information on file with us, you can complete the form online or print out a hard copy and bring it to the Welcome Center. The form is also available for pick-up at the Welcome Center. Your information will remain confidential. If you completed this information in the past, now might be a good time to send us a new form so we have the most up-to-date information on file.

Architectural Review Jim Cherry 612-805-5637 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 pm

Lighting is getting to be more important now that the sun is setting earlier. As a Dark Sky community in a Dark Sky town, how much lighting we have and where it is pointed is important. Low voltage shielded lights along a sidewalk, driveway and/or patio are to be expected. A couple of lowvoltage lights shining on a cactus or tree is okay. Those flat solar-light pucks that lay on the ground and shine straight up, do not belong here. A 60-watt bulb in an entry fixture is too much. Post lights are accent lighting, not street light replacements. If the fixture lenses are not frosted, then the bulb should be. That bulb should be no greater than a 40-watt equivalent. Night time security lighting shining anywhere but straight down is not being neighborly and that is what this is really about. If your neighbors can't see the night sky, please do something to rectify the situation.

Code of Conduct Review Board Chair Marlene Branz 618-670-1063 conduct@suncityorovalley.com

The SCOV Code of Conduct (COC) defines civil behavior for residents and guests. The COC shall be followed when using SCOV facilities and common areas along with digital and written communications. When buying a home in SCOV, every homeowner is presented with a copy of SCOV governing documents including the Owner & Resident Handbook. On page 5 you will find the COC description, or look in the SCOV website Members section under documents. Let's make SCOV the best place to live by maintaining mutual respect, honesty and courtesy with our fellow residents.

Community Directory Chair Blythe Campbell scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

We expect to have the 2024 print directories ready for delivery in January. We'll be looking for volunteers to help deliver the directories to homes as we have in prior years. Watch "This Week in SCOV" for information to sign up to help with the delivery.

Consumer Referral - Vendor List Susanna Moran scovconsumerservices@gmail.com

The Vendor List is on the SCOV website. Log in and go to Members > Member Services > Consumer Referral Vendor List. The Vendor List is also available for viewing at the monitor’s desk at Catalina Vista. Check the Vendor List often, as changes are made frequently. Vendors should email Susanna Moran to inquire about applying to be on the Vendor List.

Election Election 2024 The Election Committee is preparing for another election cycle. Ballots will be sent in mid-February. There are two director positions to be filled, and several initiatives for your consideration. The vote will be electronic unless you have opted out of all electronic communications from the Association. If you vote by hard copy, the ballot must be mailed to Florida (the Association is no longer accepting ballots in the Administration office). to local scrapyards delivering over 86,000 pounds, netting $48,000. This money, the CAC’s sole source of funding, is used by the CAC’s Loan Room to replace and update the articles available for free loan to SCOV residents. The aluminum can recycle program thanks those SCOV residents who have donated time and effort to perform these tasks: • Sorting and bagging donated aluminum cans • Unloading collected cans in the scrapyard The program also thanks the SCOV Common Area Maintenance team for their support in loading the collected cans into trailers and trucks for delivery to the scrapyard. A last thanks goes to all the SCOV residents for collecting their used cans, washing them out and depositing them in the collection bins in the Activity Center delivery area. Tempe Johnson, a member of Neighborhood Pride Committee (NPC) for 17 years, was a keystone of the committee and is missed by all. NPC is now 19 years old and still going strong. The following was written by Tempe in 2021. "As the end of 2021 approaches, the Neighborhood Pride Committee wishes you a most happy holiday season. Seventeen years have passed since our committee was formed, and our community looks absolutely beautiful, so take time to look around. As a community, we should indeed feel proud of the way we look, not only to neighbors and ourselves, but also to those individuals who visit with the thought in mind to buy and move here. We sincerely thank you for your cooperation in helping to make Sun City Oro Valley such a wonderful place in which to live. "Enjoy the holidays, your families, your friends and neighbors, and especially our beautiful community. ‘Tis the season again, and the Neighborhood Pride Committee hopes you have a joyous one and a Happy New Year."

The Nominating Committee's mission is to encourage and recruit members in good standing to volunteer for election to the Board of Directors. The Committee’s charter prohibits the members from vetting or evaluating volunteer candidates. Once a homeowner member submits a “Statement of Interest,” the General Manager is requested to certify the proposed candidate is eligible by assuring she/he is in good standing with the Association (i.e., dues paid, no fines outstanding or issues related to good conduct). In December, at the Board of Directors meeting, the committee informs the Board of the slate of names that will be listed on the ballot in the February/March election.

Properties Chair Jack Evert jackevert439@gmail.com Next meeting Thu., Nov. 16, WC1

The future of the Lions Head Fountain has generated some interest of late. It has not been operable for over three years due to major maintenance issues compounded by Covid-related staffing problems. The Properties Committee has decided to study various restart options including replacing it with a garden, repairing it and operating it as before, and a couple of intermediate approaches. At our October meeting, some new ideas emerged which we will consider as we develop details for each option. During these discussions, some suggested making the amenity more of a destination to enjoy the ambience that a fountain provides. That will result in more costs than just upgrading the fountain which could complicate the project. The results of those studies will be presented to the committee after which a recommendation will be made for submission to the General Manager and Board for final decision. Our target is to have this finished before year’s end.

Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

December is historically the time of year when the temperatures get cold enough to cause frost to form. Following is a reminder of what frost does to the grass, and procedures to follow when a delay occurs. Walking or driving on frosted grass causes damage to green leaf tissue, which eventually leads to the grass dying. When the non-overseeded areas go dormant and turn brown, they are no longer susceptible to frost damage, but the overseeded fairways and tees may be damaged. If the temperature is cold, but with only spotty frost, golf carts could be restricted to the cart path for a determined amount of time. If the frost is more severe, the delay will reflect the earliest time the golf course can be prepared for golf and ready for play to start. This all depends on whether fairways and tees need to be mowed or pins need to be set up. Herbicides are used to control weeds around golf course edges. The tee, desert and overseed edges are created using various herbicides. The edges are created by using nonselective herbicides that control all plants combined with a pre-emergent to prevent new weeds. All these herbicides are applied using a blue dye to indicate where a chemical has been applied. Please don’t walk or drive through blue areas to prevent the spread of chemicals and causing damage to the turf.

Japanese flower arranging, ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

Have you been cleaning out your closets or cupboards? Do you have large pieces of fabric you no longer want? We can certainly use some more fabric to make the outer pillow case for our dear dogs and cats at the Humane Society. We can always use scraps for the inside, but we do need larger pieces for the outside. Not sure what I am talking about? Come see what we do Tuesday afternoons, 1 pm.

Members of Casa Amigas made a delivery to More Than A Bed, an organization that helps fill the needs of foster parents with furniture, clothing and equipment. This is the organization that gets all the crib and single sheets that we repurpose from the used sheets that you give us. We also give them children's clothing, blankets and quilts made by our members. This year More Than A Bed asked our group to make Christmas stockings for the foster children they serve. Casa Amigas really pulled through and made over 400 stockings out of red and green felt with festive holiday fabric trim donated from our community. Thank you, as always, for fabric donations. Robin spends summers in Spokane, WA, but she continues to be a very active member of the club even while away. She has become skilled at silversmithing and has introduced us to the technique Robin Kahn's colorful enameled copper jewelry of enameling on copper. This ties in very well with silversmithing, because you treat the copper similarly to the silver and then fuse the granular enamel with acetylene torches. She has generously helped our members learn this technique. Also, she is heading up our committee to keep our windows up to date and beautifully decorated. We thank Robin for all she does for our club. Stop by our shop and speak with a monitor about joining. New member training is held monthly on the second Tuesday and Wednesday.

As we are busy exchanging gifts this month and celebrating more than our survival, perhaps we should think a bit about others not so lucky. We might even consider an adage that professors often repeat: History repeats itself. Sadly, though we’re often required or choose to study history, it’s a lesson we have yet to take to heart. One of our group’s more philosophic poets expresses thoughts too serious and somber to ignore–they might even lead to a New Year’s resolution. Us and Them With oppression comes abuse and hatred With us and them followed by desperation. comes ours and theirs followed by conflict. With desperation comes explosive rage With conflict followed by war. comes might is right followed by injustice With war comes bloody horror With injustice followed by revision. comes domination followed by oppression. And amnesia. New members are always welcome to join us, in person or on Zoom. Call for a Zoom invitation or the designated meeting room. We’d also like to wish our readers health and happiness in 2024.

The first thing that many returning residents often do is grab the Tipster to see all the available monthly activities. However, historically, the Technology Club has only offered a few classes during December because of prior meeting room commitments. Please check the website to make sure a particular class is being offered in December. In the spirit of cooperating with other clubs and organizations, the Technology Club has granted the AARP-requested use of the Technology Lab for their three-week, yearly AARP tax preparation training. Because the doors to the Technology Lab will be locked during this period, all calls to the Tech Desk Help line will have to be scheduled to meet at a location other than the Technology Lab. Don’t hesitate to call, just be aware of the change. Looking forward to all our interesting January classes, both old and new? Examples of classes are Networking, Android Devices, iPhone, WiFi, Streaming TV and Alexa Device classes. See you there.

Fido's Friends members are dedicated to pups, old and young. We enjoy much community support. At three meetings each season we have speakers knowledgeable about different aspects of dog health and welfare. We support the SCOV Dog Park and we send out alerts or information periodically. Toby, Cody and Tater play, while Scout lounges We are always concerned that dogs are safe. Securing them with leashes when out and staying with them in the yard helps keep them safe from our active desert wildlife. Occasionally, a dog gets out and runs loose. We encourage cautiously assisting with retrieval to get them home. If you spot a dog, post on Facebook and Nextdoor and text +1 (833) 552-0591 with the word “found” to Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) for instructions. Similarly, text “lost” for how to find a dog. Another source is the website lost.petcolove. org. Help if you can. It’s heartbreaking to lose a dog.

New members are always welcome. Our members are fun, accepting and welcoming. We frequently hear “I came for the exercises and love all of the friends I have made.” The yearly dues are $5, and your first class is free.

The actual Pilates exercises result in benefits that can't be beat: better balance (fewer falls), more flexibility (joints move again), increased muscle tone (you're stronger) and more energy and well-being. The instructors oversee us at all times and have modifications for the most strenuous exercises for anyone with limitations. The cost is $8 cash per class, and annual club dues each January are $20 pp. Questions, call Mary.

The SCOV Scrabble Club plays every week for the love of the game and the socializing that playing affords. Drop by any Friday afternoon at 1 pm and see if you want to play.

Cycling renews us. Getting outside in the clean air, taking in the incredible mountain views and biking with friends are some of the reasons we choose to live here. Oro Valley is one of the greatest biking destinations in the country. Wide streets, gorgeous bike paths, clean air and desert beauty draw cyclists from all over the country. Cycling here is a dream come true for members of the Sun City Vistoso Cycling Club (VCC). With over 250 members and organized group rides four days per week, there’s a ride for everyone. We support three local charitable organizations: Wheels for Kids, El Grupo and the Interfaith Community Food Bank. VCC volunteers build or repair and deliver over 400 bikes to kids in the Tucson area every year through the Wheels for Kids (WFK) program. WFK’s 40 volunteers have delivered over 4,600 bikes to charities such as Boys and Girls Club, Casa de los Niños and More Than a Bed. New volunteers are welcome.
