Association News

From the Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors amashburnscov@gmail.com Just Another New Year! by Allan Mashburn This was the year that was the year I didn’t get that much done– Much the same as the year before, Much like the one to come The above stanza is by Brian Bilston and the poem is titled "Days Like These." It certainly typifies a concern that we all might have. But living in SCOV, an active adult community, there is so much to do that if we feel that way we just haven’t gotten out of the house and explored everything that is offered. There are opportunities and adventures for everyone and at all levels of activity. My wife and I recently joined the Bocce Club. There is little physical activity, just some hand-eye coordination that I am still working on. If Bocce isn’t your thing, other adventures await. There are card clubs, chess, artisan crafts and many other clubs that are slower paced. If you want a bit more activity in your life, try one of the court sports: tennis, POP Tennis or pickleball. We have been members of the POP Tennis Club since it began. It certainly gives you the chance to work up a sweat and gives your legs a workout. If you review the list of clubs you will find many that will help keep you moving and in shape. No matter which club you join, there is one benefit that they all have in common. It is a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours, doing something fun with fellow residents. You might even find a new friend or two. For those looking for a real challenge, offer to be a club officer or board member. To keep the clubs running and alive, volunteer residents are needed. Yes, it takes a bit of effort, but it’s always easier when more hands, hearts and minds are involved. Our whole community is improved when everyone contributes. And let’s not forget the Posse. For those who enjoy a quiet ride around the community in an SCOV vehicle, and want to provide your friends and neighbors a bit of security, this is for you.

So next year, it won’t be “I didn’t get much done.” It’ll be “Wow, what a year!” As one of our newer residents put it, “I love SCOV, it’s Disneyland for adults.” I agree.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 A Promising Future As we bid farewell to the old and welcome the new, our active community at SCOV (Sun City Oro Valley) is filled with warmth and optimism for the year ahead. The past year has brought us challenges and triumphs, and now it's time to look forward to a promising future for our vibrant community. First and foremost, let's extend our heartfelt New Year's wishes to all the residents of SCOV. May the coming year be filled with good health, joy and continued camaraderie. Our active and engaged community has always been a source of inspiration, and we look forward to another year of shared experiences, laughter and support. As we set our sights on the future, one exciting prospect is the development of the Copper Center. This potential hub of community life could very well be a focal point for future social activities, events and gatherings as well as artisan creativity. With the anticipation of expansion and enhancement, the Copper Center is poised to become a dynamic space, fostering connection and community spirit. In the realm of recreational facilities, an exciting addition is a second golf course fountain. Picture this: two beautiful fountains gracing both retention ponds, adding a touch of elegance to our already picturesque surroundings. This enhancement contributes to the aesthetics of the area. Beyond the visual appeal, the fountains on the golf course retention ponds and the Copper Center are testaments to our commitment to continuous improvements, small and great. We are creating spaces that enhance the overall wellbeing of our community. They are symbols of progress and a reflection of the collective effort to make SCOV an even more inviting place to call home. As we embark on this new chapter, let's embrace the opportunities for growth and development within our community. With the Copper Center evolving and the golf course becoming even more enchanting, the year ahead holds the promise of new adventures, shared memories and a flourishing SCOV that we can all be proud of. Here's to a vibrant and fulfilling new year for the entire SCOV family!

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Secure Access The secure access system is 95 percent installed in the Activity Center. During the installation it was found that the doors leading to the courtyard did not have the correct push bar, resulting in a delay while that part is ordered, shipped and installers can be brought back onsite. The camera system installation is also experiencing a delay due to additional equipment needed. Updates will be provided in "This Week in SCOV" when the system goes live. In the meantime, here’s an update on building entry guidelines and some FAQ answers. Each building has a scanner with an "Everyone Scans" sign. It is SCOV policy that each resident or staff member entering the building scans their card (or fob). This means no buddy entry, please. This also means you are responsible for bringing your card or fob. Staff are not tasked with opening the doors for those who have not brought their cards. Please make sure monitors are able to do their job of setting up rooms and other duties by scanning yourself into each building. Nonresidents may still enjoy The Bistro at the walk-up window. Baristas will be glad to make them a latte or provide a scoop of ice cream, but the building is not open to nonresidents. Some clubs have nonresidents who participate in their clubs. This provision is something the clubs choose to do, and with that choice comes the responsibility of the club to facilitate their nonresident members to enter the building with a double scan of their card. The secure access system will provide a layer of protection for our building, employees and residents. Thank you for working together to provide a pleasant, safe environment to enjoy community.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Architectural Coordinator Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 Permits from Town of Oro Valley Needed? Happy new year. If you are contemplating doing any interior or exterior renovations on your home, be sure to consult the Town of Oro Valley website regarding required permits. If your project includes an In-House Submittal or ARC Submittal approval, getting a Town of Oro Valley building permit may be stipulated in the approval process. Once you get that permit, it is important to send a copy to the Architectural Coordinator at scoroval@ciramail.com so that it can be included in your property profile. A Town of Oro Valley representative has confirmed several instances where remodeling has or is taking place when no application to the Town for permits was ever initiated. The Association does not report status of permit documentation to the Town. If you don’t want your project shut down by the Town of Oro Valley, please take the time to research whether you need to apply on the Town of Oro Valley website www. orovalleyaz.gov/Services/Apply-for-Permits. You can also call the Town at 520-229-4800.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 New Year, New Exercise It’s a new year, and maybe you’ve resolved to start an exercise program. If so, good for you. Getting regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do. And it's one of the most common New Year's resolutions among Americans each year. Just make sure you start off on the right foot with these helpful tips: take it slow, set small goals. After all, you're in this for a lifetime. Talk to your doctor before getting started, especially if it’s been 8-12 months or longer since you’ve last exercised, you’ve had a large weight gain or you’ve had a noticeable change in health. Evaluate your personality. Do you like to exercise alone, in a large group or with a partner? The answer to this question will help you decide what type of exercise will keep you motivated to stick with your new routine. If you’re exercising outside: Make safety a priority, dress for the weather, wear reflectors and light colors if you'll be out when it’s dark and carry a cell phone with you. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held Thursdays, 1 pm. Stop in and sign up. Classes are limited. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns regarding the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2. Tuesday, January 9, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, January 10, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Tuesday, January 23, the AFC spa will be closed for cleaning until 1 pm.

AFC Open House

Architectural Inspection Group Conveyance Coordinator Jack Mooney 520-917-8087, scoroval@ciramail.com

Things have certainly changed in the housing market in the past year. What has not changed much is the value of homes in SCOV. This is due in large part to individuals taking pride in their homes and property. Keeping your home and yards looking good is not easy. It takes commitment and resources. If there is something on the outside of your home you are considering doing, please be sure to check with the Architectural Review Committee for any required approvals. Not only will they ensure that the project is done to current standards, but you won’t be surprised when it is time to sell your home and the required inspection is done. The time spent getting approval will be well worth it.

Architectural Review Jim Cherry 612-805-5637 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 pm

Fences and walls are topics most of us in SCOV can appreciate. Whether we want to keep the pets in or the wildlife out, a large number of upgrades have been made. On the subject of pets, it is important to note that coyotes, bobcats, and mountain lions can all jump in excess of five feet. Never leave your pets unattended, as you cannot build something high enough. We’d also stress the need to know the ownership of the existing fences/walls and where your lot lines are located. While many lots have markers, just as many do not. The best determination for where your property is situated is to obtain a survey. We’d request that if you do get a survey, please bring the results to the office. Those findings can be added to your plot plan file for future reference.

Code of Conduct Review Board Chair Marlene Branz 618-670-1063 conduct@suncityorovalley.com

For 2024 let's resolve to make SCOV an even better place to live by treating everyone with respect and courtesy. If you would like to learn more about the SCOV Code of Conduct, look on page 5 of the Owner and Resident Handbook. If you would like to file a complaint, look in the Members Services tab on the SCOV website. Issues not covered by the Code of Conduct Review Board include law enforcement issues, SCOV Facebook posts, ARC issues and any conduct outside the SCOV boundaries. SCOV clubs are encouraged to have their own conduct rules for club activities.

Community Directory Chair Blythe Campbell scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

We expect to have the 2024 print directories ready for delivery in January. We'll be looking for volunteers to help deliver the directories to homes as we have in prior years. Watch "This Week in SCOV" for information to sign up to help with the delivery.

We'll be back to our wonderful desert wonderland without the fancy lights after January 4. Our committee loved to hear your kind words about the displays we volunteers labored long and hard to develop for the community. We are extremely grateful to the Foundation for their generous support. We believe we are finally finished making the "flowers," but look forward to continuing the displays as long as we are flexible enough to install them. Have the happiest and healthiest new year ever.

Since we are likely to be steadily busy throughout the winter, please make a reservation for the items you need up to two months in advance, either in person at the Loan Room or on the website. We try to provide everything you are requesting but we do run out of some items at our busiest times. Come visit us to see what we have available to loan; we will be glad to give you a tour. Properties Chair Jack Evert jackevert439@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 am, WC1 and Zoom

The Properties Committee does a complete on-site inspection of Association facilities twice a year. Items identified in the final report from that inspection are prioritized and sent to Administration, which then reviews the report and decides how to tackle the issues. As you might imagine, even this level of attention won’t pick up every issue. Residents can help out here; there is a new feature available that you can use when you see something you think the committee should know about. Go to the SCOV website, click on Member > Committees and then the tab titled Agenda Item Request. The committee will get the request and take a look, whether you can attend our meeting or not. We appreciate the help keeping our facilities ship shape.

and are contaminated with various sizes of rocks. The last time all the bunkers were renovated was 2011. The industry standard for the life of a sand trap is between 8 to 15 years, based on how well the bunker was constructed. During the last renovation the bunkers had the bottoms raised, bigger sumps installed for drainage, and new sand installed. However, only a few steep faces had a sprayed-on liner installed, and no pipe drainage was installed to remove excess water. This led to the contamination of rocks and very wet sand. During the greens renovation in 2020, new bunkers were added to some of the holes. These bunkers were built with a liner covering the entire trap and drainage pipes to remove excess water. Those bunkers are performing very well. Currently, a master plan for the entire golf course is being developed by our golf course architect. The bunkers are going to be the first phase of that plan to be renovated. The timeline of implementing that phase has not yet been determined, but optimistically it could begin in the next year or two depending on budgeting and availability of construction contractors.

Overseeding went very well this year, and the golf course is in very good condition. Any time the overall conditions are really good, the areas of the golf course that need to be improved are magnified. On our golf course the area of biggest concern is the bunkers. They have become hard despite daily raking, become wet very quickly

Thank You Corner Mike and I would like to thank all the members of SCOV who came to our rescue during my two surgeries. They helped load/unload food for the new appliances, which arrived a month early while I was completely helpless, visited me at Transitions Rehab, brought food for evening meals, and kept in touch with emails and texts. The cards and thoughtfulness warmed our hearts and reinforced why we love living in SCOV. –Peggy and Mike Gardner A huge thank you for your cards, warm hugs and kind words of encouragement at David's passing. That means so much to me. I love living here with my Sun City family. –Coco Sullivan

Many artists are familiar with Carol Nagel, who has a long history with SCOV arts, the Art Studio, and the Art League. In 1996, Carol and her husband Bill were new SCOV residents, and she began exploring all the art classCarol Nagel es and activities. She first helped hang art in the Activity Center in 1996. She then began taking art classes through SCOV art groups. Carol says she liked to take as many art classes as were available. For 12 years, Carol was the secretary for the Art League. Today Carol serves as Art League consultant and is always present at art hangings. Carol has the talent and eyes for coordinating up to 130 art pieces and somehow grouping them together in a cohesive, beautiful collection in SCOV facilities. The SCOV artists and Art League members thank you Carol.

Japanese flower arranging, ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

Knit and Crochet Jane Fairchild 520-909-5069 janemail11@yahoo.com Mon., 2:30-4:30 pm, Activity Center/Hohokam

If you have a knit or crochet project, or would like to learn, come join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted mats out of plastic shopping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats. If you wish to donate bags, flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one; no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Do not include newspaper bags as they do not work for this project. Bags can be dropped into a basket on Jane Fairchild’s front porch any time at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way.od

Look at all those toys and volunteers. Seniors for Kids is a special group of people, as are the entire group of residents at SCOV. Hip, hip hooray!

Happy New year. Wow, what a year 2023 was. New members have been added to our rolls and we have supplied so many children with love through our toy distribution and adopt-a-family program at the Tri-Communities program and the many charitable organizations of southern Arizona. It is really joyful to think that a small group can affect so many lives. Now we need to focus on what we can accomplish in 2024. The Sewing Room shelves are already filling with new toys, quilts and all kinds of creations. Karen Curry and Dick Minch from the Wood Shop will again plan work days to make the cherished wooden toys that they encourage the woodworkers to make. We add these to our stash for next holiday season. A special shout out to Wheels for Kids, who supplied seven bicycles and helmets to children at Tri-Communities. They not only supplied the bikes and helmets, but they also assisted in delivery. Living is giving and giving is living. Thank you from us all.

Happy New Year. May you all be blessed for the kindness you shared in 2023 and may you continue to care for others in the year ahead. Our group of cutters, embroiderers, sewers, stuffers, bottom closers, and bow tiers have had a busy year. We made over 500 Cheer Bears and sent them on their way to new homes for young and old alike. We continue to put several bears in the Gift Shop, since many here requested purchasing them for grandchildren. This income, as well as donations from the Tennis Club and residents, helps us to purchase supplies we need to keep the supply chain full. As always, we appreciate material donations of flannel and Poly-Fil stuffing. Our thanks for all the community support.

I can arrange cleaning. Call Dave 405-204-8921. WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT/MANAGEMENT SERVICE: Need help with your club's website? Call SCOV resident Paul Sherwood 520-329-7661 to discuss options. Services include the design of an all new website or management of existing sites. CAREGIVER/HOME CARE in your home. I just moved here to SCOV from Wenatchee, WA. I want a jab as a care giver. I’ve been a care giver for about seven years in Wenatchee. I also will do your household chores as well as your personal care giving. Take you to doctor appointments, grocery store or I can run errands for you, too. I’m 72 and a Christian. Call me at 509-670-0702 Linda McKee. PET CARE: When you’re not home, I will make sure your pets are cared for and well loved. My services include dog walking, boarding of dogs and cat care. I am able to administer medications if needed. Suzanne Batten, 253-310-2693, email: suzbatten@gmail.com. BUYING: A curious collector would like to buy watches, old photos, war relics, 19th and 20th century family and estate items, antiques, jewelry, coins, silver and much more.
