Association News

From the Board of Directors

Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors

jfairchildscov@yahoo.com

Be Part of the Solution

We are living in complicated times in our country and in our Association. It is important to hear each other’s viewpoints and consider various solutions as we address the needs of our community. Whichever way the March 2024 election turns out, we will need to work together effectively to carry out solutions that benefit us all. A chance for new beginnings.

Wherever there are groups of people, there will be occasional conflicts to resolve and, of course, differing opinions of how to do so. Your input needs to be heard by the people who can take action on it. Fortunately, SCOV has a timetested process to hear your concerns and ideas and to determine solutions. There are standing volunteer committees, described on pages 7-9, that are tasked with planning and upkeep of the various critical elements of our community: Properties, Aquatic and Fitness Center, Finance, Neighborhood Pride, Food and Beverage, Elections, Gift Shop and others. These are groups of residents doing the actual work needed to run our association effectively.

Whatever your interests and concerns are, you can attend open committee meetings to find out what is being discussed or decided, to ask questions and to contribute your thoughts. This is where you can bring ideas for improvement and discuss areas that may need repair. Once processed, committee recommendations are then presented to the Board of Directors for a vote and next steps are taken. Be part of the solution by getting the most current planning and project information directly from our dedicated committees and contributing your own suggestions to the mix. We need you.

Summer Wanderlust: A Friendly Reminder for a Blooming Community

As summer approaches, many of our vibrant senior community members eagerly prepare for their seasonal getaways. Whether you're off to explore new destinations or simply basking in the warmth of family reunions, it's essential to remember that your yard back at SCOV deserve a little love too.

Yard Care and Weed Watch:

As we bid farewell to familiar surroundings, let's not forget the beauty that adorns our community—the well-tended blossoming cacti and the meticulously maintained yards. The nurturing touch each resident imparts to their outdoor spaces is what makes our community a haven of natural splendor.

We extend a friendly reminder to ensure your yards are cared for in your absence. While the allure of new landscapes beckons, we wouldn't want the untamed growth of weeds to overshadow the charm of our community. Consider arranging for a trusted neighbor, friend or reliable yard care service to tend to your yard in your absence. A well-kept yard not only adds to the overall appeal of our community but also ensures a warm welcome upon your return.

Golf Cart Safety and Mosquito Prevention:

A quick note to our golf cart enthusiasts within the community: remember that a valid driver's license is a must when operating a golf cart. This ensures the safety of all residents and promotes responsible community living. Let's keep our pathways and roads safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Additionally, as we soak in the joys of summer, let's be proactive in preventing mosquito-related inconveniences. Before you leave for the season, empty fountains and other places where water may accumulate. This simple step will go a long way in avoiding any mosquito-related challenges .

Let's work together to preserve the lush landscapes that define our beautiful senior community. As you embark on your summer journey, leave a piece of your heart at home–ensuring that you return to a community that remains as vibrant and inviting as ever. Happy travels and may the beauty of our community continue to bloom in your absence.

Gardening in the Desert

TheGarden Club is pleased to announce that Garden Walk 2024 will be held the morning of Saturday, April 6, and tickets will be available soon.

For over 30 years the Sun City Garden Club has offered the Garden Walk as a fun social event for our residents. It has become an important learning experience for gardeners interested in making the most of our delightful Sonoran Desert climate, as well as demonstrating ways gardeners cope with the challenges of long hot summers and scant rainfall.

Planning for each Garden Walk begins a year before the event and involves many club members in the selection of gardens, publicity, ticketing and hosting at each of the homes.

tour cost $20 and include a map of the garden locations as well as a short description of each garden. Please note that these are private homes and are not handicap accessible. We are setting up an information center this year so walkers can visit with local organizations and businesses such as the Audubon Society, the Water Dept., Rain Harvest Systems and Tank's Green Stuff (compost). The Walk begins at 8:30 am and ends promptly at 1 pm. Wear comfortable shoes to enjoy your morning in the gardens.

There is so much to learn from the work of the 10 homeowners who are graciously sharing their gardens with our Garden Walk guests this year. Would you like your own garden to attract hummingbirds and butterflies? Do you want your garden space to explore the many forms of cactus and succulents that thrive here? How about creating a scented garden of jasmine, roses, lavender and honeysuckle? Would you like your back patio space to provide a charming colorful place for nightly dinners? Are you interested in knowing how to capture and distribute rainwater on your property? Perhaps you’d like your garden to be a low maintenance project to enjoy developing over the coming years, or you want the perfect place to entertain friends and grandchildren. If you want a garden that can survive the summer while you are away, you’ll learn that too as you explore the 10 gardens on the Walk.

Garden Club members can buy tickets at the March 12 meeting. Tickets for Sun City residents will be sold at the Activity Center on Wednesday, March 20, 1-3 pm, and Monday, March 25 10 am-noon. If there are still tickets remaining on April 3 we will sell them from 1-3 pm. All ticket sales will at the table in front of the Auditorium. Tickets for the self-guided

If you are interested in joining, SCOV Garden Club meets at 1 pm in the Auditorium every second Tuesday, October through April. Our meetings feature knowledgeable speakers and demonstrations. We offer several field trips to arboretums, botanical gardens and other places of special interest to gardeners. While some of our members are Master Gardeners, many of us are from non-desert climates and we enjoy finding out about what thrives here, the special advantages of our weather and how to cope with the challenges of the desert climate and soils. We learn something new at every meeting.

Club members actively participate in a variety of projects. This year our members decorated the Activity Center for the holidays. We replanted all the blue pots at the Aquatic and Fitness Center, maintained them through extremes of heat and cold and repaired and relocated a few of them after hungry javelinas and deer got after them. In November, we had a very successful food drive for Tri-Community Food Bank. We did a project in January and February in cooperation with Fido’s Friends to help the Pima County Animal Shelter, and 35 of our members are involved in the work of presenting the Garden Walk.

Annual dues are $10 pp ($15/cpl) and are payable at the meeting. You will find a friendly welcome and meet lots of enthusiastic gardeners, so consider becoming a member.

Food & Beverage Update

As the restaurant consultant finishes his work, SCOV has been implementing his recommended changes. Over the next months you will begin to see those changes, starting with our new Executive Chef, Nate Jenkins. He’s been here since late November but is still new to the team. Additionally, starting in mid-February was our Food & Beverage Director, Sandy Wilson and our Restaurant Manager, Ricardo Frascari. In just the few days they’ve been onsite they have been learning about the restaurant and bringing their leadership and customer service skills. They know the goals of improving customer service, food quality and delivery times and fiscal responsibilities.

Sandy has been the general manager of Sullivan's as a top-performing leader with a reputation for maintaining high standards of quality, ensuring expected results, reducing costs, galvanizing teams, driving revenue, improving processes and exceeding both short-and-long term fiscal operational goals. Ricardo has been the restaurant manager at Casino del Sol with a strong background in guest satisfaction. He is a friendly and courteous manager and has a proficient knowledge of food, wine and spirits. We welcome them to The Views Restaurant. Janet will be starting her next position in medical coding. We are excited for her, thankful for her faithful work for The Views Restaurant over the past years and wish her the best in this next step.

As patrons of The Views Restaurant, you have experienced the challenges and the good times. Thank you for your support. The team is learning our needs and ready to deliver great experiences. Come join us in this beautiful community setting.

Approved and Prohibited Plantings

Our Development Standards Section 2.18 address basic landscaping directives. They also contain a Prohibited Plant List and an Approved Tree List. An insert in this month’s Tipster has been included for your review of these lists. Use the lists as you shop for new plantings this spring or next fall.

Any annual or perennial flowers, cacti or succulents, whether in ground or in pots, may not be planted on a resident’s property if they are included in the Association Prohibited Plant List. Wildflowers are approved in yards, but the plants must be removed immediately after they have finished blooming (not to worry-they will come back). Planted material that conflicts with these Development Standards as of the date of adoption (October 27, 2019) are approved until the plant is removed or dies.

Regarding the Approved Tree List, all trees planted on a resident’s property, after November 11, 2021 shall be from this Association Approved Tree List unless otherwise approved by the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). If a new tree is planted after October 27, 2019 it may not exceed an expected height of 25 feet at maturity.

Please refer to the entire Section 2.18 for specifics on where to plant on your property.

Prior written approval from the ARC is required for all major landscaping changes (See Master Declaration 5.2). Minor landscaping, which includes adding or changing plants without changing topography or drainage, does not require pre-approval.

We have a great line-up of authors coming this month. Chris Enns and Bill Markley, the famous old west writers are returning to SCOV. This year they are bringing along Preston Lewis, Sherry Monahan and Manuela Schneider. All five western authors will briefly present, and their books will be available for purchase. (Rumor has it, there might be some western music as well) This is a can’t miss event, scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, 9:30 am, Activity Center.

On Friday, March 8, 9 am, Hank Phillippi Ryan will make a stop at the Activity Center before the Tucson Festival of Books to talk about her newest book, One Wrong Word

Our last event for March will be Katherine Reay, a national bestselling, award-winning author. She will discuss her new book, A Shadow in Moscow, a story about the lives of two courageous female spies. This author talk is Monday, March 11, 11 am, Activity Center.

A special thank you to Friends of the Library members for assisting me with author events by collecting tickets, creating advertising materials and introducing authors.

The Library will have promotional materials for the Tucson Festival of Books and will feature this year’s visiting authors’ books on our end caps for March.

How Can I Prevent Injuries?

To avoid injuring yourself during exercise, don’t try to do too much, too soon. Start with an activity that is fairly easy for you, such as walking. Do it for a few minutes a day, several times a day. Slowly increase the amount of time and the intensity of the activity. For example, increase your walking time and speed over several weeks. Start every workout with a warm-up. This will make your muscles and joints more flexible. Spend 5 to 10 minutes doing some light stretching exercises and brisk walking. Do the same thing when you're finished exercising until your heart rate returns to normal. Pay attention to your body. Stop exercising if you feel very out of breath, dizzy, faint or nauseous, or if you feel pain. Talk with your family doctor if you have questions or think you have injured yourself seriously.

Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC)

Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held Thursdays, 1 pm. Stop in and sign up. Classes are limited. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns regarding the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2.

Tuesday, March 12, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Wednesday, March 13, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Tuesday, March 26, the AFC spa will be closed for cleaning until 1 pm.

Next meeting Tue., Mar. 12, 3 pm, WC2

Our guest speaker this month is Dr. John Tait. He will present a unique perspective on “Why our joints age…and why we don’t have to!” Dr. Tait is a functional and regenerative medicine specialist practicing non-surgical approaches to orthopedic and pain conditions with the goal of helping patients lengthen the lifespan of their musculoskeletal system, while simultaneously improving their total health and longevity. Please join us on Friday, March 8, 1 pm, Auditorium.

Aquatic and Fitness Center Advisory

First Wed., 11 am, WC1

The committee has been working with Lonnie Davis and Administration to update the cardio equipment in the Fitness Center. The equipment, such as ellipticals, were no longer able to be updated for parts and are on the asset reserve list to be updated this year. As a result, Lonnie worked hard to get bids, and equipment will be updated within the next twelve weeks. The new Life Fitness equipment will be WiFi compatible and a great improvement. Once they are installed, please check with Lonnie if you need an orientation.

Architectural Inspection Group

Conveyance Coordinator Lisa Orach 520-917-8072, scoroval@ciramail.com

Meet fourth Wed., 2 pm

People will say that what sells a home is its curb appeal. While the work you put into a home and yard will most certainly impress those who see it, what we hear repeatedly from visitors is how great SCOV looks throughout the entire community. From recreational facilities, shared common areas, the golf course, the various buildings and every neighborhood they see, they are truly impressed with the beauty and care that everyone takes in keeping SCOV looking so attractive. The curb appeal starts when people drive into Sun City. People want to live here, and for good reason. We should all be proud of that and understand that it is the result of the ongoing work of individual homeowners and dedicated staff that make this place unique. Thank you all.

Architectural Review

Jim Cherry 612-805-5637 ARC@suncityorovalley.com

Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 pm

Idea equals concept. Before you venture too deep into planning your new patio cover or room addition, know that we have a policy, ARC-006, covering this type of improvement. It provides you with an opportunity to take advantage of the Architectural Review Committee’s insight prior to your making an investment in architects, contractors and/or putting down a deposit for the work.

The Architectural Review Committee will come out to hear what you would like to accomplish. They will look at setbacks, drainage and any potential visibility concerns. They can also share with you what others have done and point out anything specific to consider when/if you decide to proceed. Before you sign on the dotted line, tell the sales person that SCOV has a preview process that has to be completed first. Or better yet, follow ARC-006 before you start shopping.

Chair Marlene Branz 618-670-1063 conduct@suncityorovalley.com

The SCOV Code of Conduct (COC) strives to encourage, support and help ensure more civil discourse and civil conduct within our community. The COC complaint process was developed to deal with serious violations of the Code of Conduct. We hope residents use the complaint process sparingly and honestly. To read the Code of Conduct, look on page 5 of the Owner and Resident Handbook. To file a complaint, look in the Member Services tab on the SCOV website.

Issues not covered by the COC complaint process include law enforcement issues, SCOV Facebook posts, Architectural Review Committee issues and any conduct outside the SCOV boundaries.

Friends of the Library (FOL) sends a huge shout out and thank you to all the wonderful homeowners who let so many Library supporters tour their homes. We couldn’t have done it without all the incredible docents and FOL volunteers.

FOL members were able to purchase tickets for the Home Tour on the first day and we sold out in minutes on the second day. That’s one definite advantage to becoming an FOL member. FOL members should save the date for Great Views 5, on Wednesday, April 3, 10 am, Catalina Vista. This highly anticipated presentation by Garry Buck covers new foreign and indie films, all available in our Library. FOL members may pick up their free tickets in the Library closer to the day of the event.

Be on the lookout for a new service initiated by FOL and offered through our Library. Coming in April, Home Bound Books will deliver Library items to your home. Details coming soon. Join us every month for Book Bingo. See Coming Events page 12 for more information.

Featured consignors for this month are Jan Bohe and Jane Fairchild.

Jan makes the canvas bags that hold plastic grocery bags. They are totally handmade. “I buy canvas by the yard, measure, cut, applique, paint and sew them. I have been making these for over 15 years. Each one is original and some people have asked for specific designs, such as cats, particular breeds of dogs, fish, southwest designs and sunflowers.”

Jane makes Fiber Flings, which are lightweight yarn and bead necklaces that can add pizzazz to any outfit. They are made of various types of novelty yarns and are finished with coordinating beads and an easy magnetic clasp. These unique accessories bring color, texture and personality to your look. She also makes ceramic scrolls for guest name tags or to describe food items at parties and scrolled phone holders.

Spring is right around the corner, and here are spring cleaning reminders concerning front and street-facing side yards:

• Trees must be trimmed up at least seven feet over sidewalks and not block the visibility of traffic signs.

• Plants should not extend over sidewalks, and frost-damaged parts of shrubs and trees should be cut off and removed.

• Weeds, debris and suckers should be promptly removed.

• No Shrub which significantly obstructs the sightline from a neighboring property shall exceed six feet (6’) in height as currently specified for Hedges in Section 4.19 of the Master Declaration. Identification of a noncomplying Hedge or Shrub greater than six feet (6’) may be submitted by a resident to the Architectural Coordinator.

• Shrubs near the entrance of a driveway should be cut to less than 42” in height so as not to block the visibility of vehicles and pedestrians.

• If you will be leaving for the summer, please make arrangements to have your yard and property maintained throughout your absence.

Your neighbors will appreciate your attention to these matters. Refer to Development Standards 2.18.

This is out of compliance with our Owner and Resident Handbook, page 11. We all understand there are occasions when parking your car on the street, rather than in your garage or driveway, is a necessity (i.e., when work is being done on your home). We remind everyone, however, that this should be rare and not become a habit.

Remember, the Posse is always recruiting new members. For more information, call Linda Simōn at 520-789-7169.

Director of Golf Maintenance

scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com

520-917-8063

March is the beginning of the golf course maintenance busy season. The temperatures start to warm up, and the chance of rain decreases. These changes in weather conditions lead to many new challenges, including a surge of growth in the overseeded grasses, Poa annua seed production in overseeded areas, and weed growth around desert edges.

Warmer weather causes soil temperatures to rise which releases more nutrients available to the grass. The problem is that the grass begins to grow faster than it can be mowed.

9 Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, March 2024

This leads to higher fuel and labor costs for the increased mowing, and more grass clippings leading to messy fairways. The warmer weather also starts the Poa annua bloom on the fairways. One of the ways to slow the grass growth and control Poa annua flowering is by applying a growth regulator.

The higher soil temperatures also start greening up the Bermuda grass that wasn’t overseeded this past winter. The dormant grass on the greens will begin to grow. This growth will help regulate green speeds by adjusting mowing height and frequency, as well as healing the old plugs from cutting cups. When these plugs start to recover, the second cup on the green will be removed and the cups will again be moved daily.

Non-overseeded collars will begin to grow which will lead to a reduction of the compacted areas around the greens and help prevent balls from rolling off the greens.

Pres. Tod Milton 520-256-0962 theodore.r.milton@gmail.com

Wow, what a grand beginning to the 2024 season. We have welcomed many new members to our fun and exciting group of golfers.

The good news is that our morning play is getting warmer and, of course, more comfortable. Golf scores are going down along with handicaps. That is a good news and bad news situation as we head toward our club championship tournament.

We want to thank The Views 9-Hole Women’s Golf Club for giving up a day of golf so that our club could host the 9-Hole Men’s Club from SaddleBrooke. Thanks, ladies.

There’s still time to buy raffle tickets and donate to the annual Cure for Cancer Tournament on Sunday, March 10. Come out and support the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

Our final Burger Bash and awards meeting is Thursday, April 4, Activity Center. We always have lots of laughs and good times with friends celebrating the winners of this year’s club tournament.

• End of season club tournament Thursdays, March 14, 21, and 28.

Community Foundation

Pres. Carol Johnson 425-343-7138 FoundationSCOV@gmail.com Fourth Thu., 1 pm, Catalina Vista www.foundationscov.org

On Sunday, March 10, more than 250 golfers and volunteers will be involved in the 25th Annual Cure for Cancer Golf Tournament, sponsored by The Views Men’s and Women’s Golf Clubs.

Last year, over $48,000 was raised, including a $6,000 challenge grant from the Foundation. All of the money goes to the University of Arizona Cancer Center for laboratory research, clinical trials and prevention research. The University of Arizona is the only cancer center in Arizona to be involved in these projects.

For SCOV to be involved in this effort to seek a cure for cancer seems appropriate as many of us have had an experience or know a friend or relative who has been affected by cancer. The Foundation once again has issued a $6,000 challenge. The clubs welcome contributions from non-golfers as well.

Third Thu., 3-4:30 pm, Desert Oasis/Saguaro Room

All who are in any stage of visual impairment and their support persons are welcome to join us as we come together for mutual support. The goal of the group is to share resources, and to help make the possibility of limited vision less intimidating. We share technological and equipment advances that help enhance accessibility.

Available at our Library is one such resource: The Country of the Blind, by Andrew Leland, which chronicles the author's journey from sightedness to blindness. It is, unfortunately, not yet published in large print, but is available through Amazon in audible form. We highly recommend it to anyone on this journey or interested in learning more about blindness. It is highly readable, both bittersweet and joyful, filled with tenderness and insights.

Join us to learn and share more about resources in a supportive environment.

What is a giclée art? In the simplest terms, giclée is a copy of an artist’s original art. SCOV resident and artist Nicole Laing began watercolor painting in Oregon eight years ago. She has received tutoring, taken classes, and learned from many notable artists. Nicole and her husband Bill’s home is decorated with many of her beautiful watercolors. Bill is a talented photographer who takes and prints a photo of Nicole's art using a top notch printer, resulting in a high quality giclée.

Bill and Nicole offer the three fundamentals to achieve a high quality giclée print:

The photo taken of the art must be a high resolution;

The art must be printed on archival paper; The printer must use pigment inks.

Giclée allows Nicole keep her original, or sell the original but first make a giclée print.

For the past few years, the Clay Club has participated in creating bowls for Interfaith Community Services annual fundraiser, Empty Bowls. Our members look forward to donating their time and resources to this project by either throwing or handbuilding bowls that will be filled with soup. After paying an admission fee, fundraiser participants select a bowl made by a local artist and keep this bowl as part of their admission fee. This year's fundraiser takes place Saturday, March 2, Tucson Chinese Cultural Center, 1288 W. River Road.

Pam Curran, the Clay Club Empty Bowls coordinator, estimates that our members will donate about 75 bowls to this worthy cause.

Our spring social will be Friday, April 5, 5:30-7:30 pm, Catalina Vista. Look for a sign-up sheet in the Clay Studio later this month.

The next general meeting is Thursday, March 7, 1 pm, Activity Center/Kiva Room.

May; Oct.-Nov. Second and Fourth Mon., 2-4 pm, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge Japanese flower arranging, ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

If you have a knit or crochet project or would like to learn to crochet plastic bags into sleeping mats, come join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted sleeping mats out of plastic shopping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing them into plastic yarn (plarn), and/or crocheting them into mats.

We are temporarily suspending bag donations because we have collected enough bags to supply us for the next few months. We are grateful to receive all the bags that SCOV residents have donated for the homeless sleeping mat project over the past several years. We will resume collecting later in the year.

One of our members built this wooden mechanical treasure box, a little different project than the usual planes, trains or ships. She states, “The rotary knob on the front is used to enter a password to open the box. Keys on the back are used to lift the small compartment within the box. It was lots of fun with parts clearly marked. No glue was required and it took several hours of time.”

This treasure box is on display in the Modeler’s Room window. We enjoy sharing diverse projects like this one at our two monthly meetings. We have donuts and coffee at our twice-monthly meetings, and we share our projects like this treasure box, new techniques and some great stories. Come and join us.

The Sculpture Club meets Mondays, Catalina Vista/Art Studio. If you are interested in becoming a member or learning more about our club, stop by or contact Dale Foster. Our sculpture pieces are in the glass case and Art Studio window inside Catalina Vista, a showcase outside of the Library and inside the Library.

In February, Gene Eckebrecht displayed his sculpture, Stagecoach, in the Activity Center. If you have not seen this piece of art, you should go to see the detail that Gene integrated into the sculpture. Although it looks metallic, the sculpture is made with wire, polymer clay and painted with metallic flakes mixed with shellac. The picture illustrates the in-progress and finished project. Gene is the expert at brazing wire in our club, as you can see in the number of pieces brazed in each wheel and the structure of the stagecoach body. Thank you, Gene, for creating this piece of art and sharing it with our community.

We are busy, busy, busy at the Sewing Room Monday and Thursday mornings. We are bursting at the seams literally with eight sewing machines, four sergers, one quilting machine, and one embroidery machine all being used at the same time. There are so many projects being worked on it's hard to keep track. These include quilting blankets and Christmas placemats, embroidering infant sleep sacks with cute figures, sewing and serging pajama bottoms, tote bags and cosmetic bags for teenagers. It seems we'll never get finished converting all the donated used sheets into twin and crib sheets. The needs are never ending and we're trying to do our part. Join us if you have an itch to get back into sewing. None of the projects are complicated and we can always use more hands.

The September 2023 Tipster article for our group featured a project that Ilse Schmitt was working on. She ran out of the background wool color and the only color the club had that was close to what she needed was white. Ilse got creative and dyed the light-colored strips in hot English Breakfast tea (one bag) and one drop of food coloring. On the left is the work in progress, while the finished project is pictured at right. In the 2023 article it was noted that the dyed wool very closely matches the original color. When looking at the finished project, one cannot distinguish between the original color and the dyed.

Prior to joining us in the glass studio, he has worked to make cabochons, rocks shaped and polished that then can be used in various projects or in jewelry. In addition to glass, Don has done work in the Wood Shop, lapidary and silversmith studios. He and his wife Faith moved to SCOV in 2005 primarily because silversmithing was available here. He says he has a lot of fun doing glass and would recommend it to others. If you would like to take a Beginning Fused Glass Class like Don, come to the glass studio, and sign up for one.

Captain Sam Garcia, Engineer Bubba Thomas, Firefighter David Selby, Paramedic Erin Rodgers and Community Supervisor Dan Habinek did an impressive job and held the attention of club members as they provided valuable information and advice. Poets Corner

Sharyn Rafieyan 520-825-6762 srafieyan@comcast.net

Mon., 10 am-noon, call for location or invitation to Zoom

As we struggle with the current divide between red and blue political parties in our country, Poets Corner member John Padgett reminds us of the now mostly historic divide between races, also along color lines, and how an intermingling that blurs the differences can lead to greater harmony. While this poem seems almost simplistic, it prods us to consider that, despite our remaining differences, we are still one nation and we need to stand together before we’re torn apart. Newcomers are always welcome. Call to see if we’re Zooming or meeting in person.

Colors

We were black others took us from our home they spread their sperm now we are brown.

We were white we brought blacks in mixed our sperm now we are tan

So it goes with all races as we intermingle forced or not color tends toward brown or tan.

It is fitting.

Here we are at the beginning of March, and some of us may already be thinking of migrating into an alternate reality: i.e., another country, another state, or even an extended vacation away from SCOV. This is something many of us look forward to as soon as the Palo Verde turn yellow or the cactus start to bloom. However, in the back of our mind, a nagging thought persists: how will we ensure the integrity and safety of our property? Should we hire a house sitter or rent our homes as a vacation rental? Or, maybe put in a security system or Alexa system to remotely monitor our property. If you fall into this category, please attend our Technology Club general meeting Monday, March 11, where we will discuss and evaluate the options for both the staycation and traveling gypsies wanting to monitor their homes. .

Meeting Thu., Mar. 21, 1 pm, Activity Center/Hohokum

A wonderfully helpful volunteer at PACC helps to unload the Fido towel donation. Say "hi" if you see her there.

How do our dogs think? Can they read our minds? What makes a good service or companion dog? We have a special guest coming Thursday, March 21, 1 pm, Activity Center/Hohokum Room. Dr. Evan MacLean, Director, Arizona Canine Cognition Center, will talk about how his program investigates dog behavior, cognition, genetics and neuroendocrinology. He will also talk about how you can assist his research.

We enjoy seeing everyone at our meetings. Whether you use the dog park or not, we like to share a lot of information about our dogs. We are currently taking new members. Contact the membership director above for the application or you can download it from the website. Always look for posts on our members-only Facebook page.

Thank you all who donated clean, used towels at our January meeting for our joint project with the Garden Club. The Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) welcomed the contribution. Meanwhile, keep dogs welcome by always picking up after your dog.

Come join us Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. We meet when the air temperature is 77 degrees or warmer, as recommended by the Arthritis Foundation.

Our club performs gentle water exercises which target all muscles and are used by several health organizations to increase strength and balance, and to increase mobility/ flexibility.

Water exercise is especially helpful for arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Some new members have expressed their surprise at how quickly the first couple of sessions have already increased their abilities to move, still others are commenting on improved stamina.

New members are always welcome. Our members are fun, accepting and welcoming. We frequently hear “I came for the exercises and love all of the friends I have made.”

The yearly dues are $5, and your first class is free.

Pilates

Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com

Mon., 3 pm, Thu., 1:30 pm, AFC/Studio

Understanding the principals of Pilates takes a little time and patience because some of the exercises are different from others we’re familiar with. They are all fun and challenging. It has been said that Pilates can become addictive. It teaches proper balance, breathing, focus on your core (abdomen and back muscles) and movement control. Results include the development of more strength and stamina. Even posture is improved and joint flexibility and mobility increase. Two experienced instructors conduct the mat Pilates classes and will modify any of the moves for you, if necessary. The cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please stop by and watch a class or join us. Questions, call Mary.

SCOVTaiChi@gmail.com

Thu., 10-11:30 am, AFC/Studio 1

The spring tai chi session begins Thursday, March 28, and runs through the beginning of June. The course consists of 10 classes led by Sensei Donna Drazenovich, second degree black belt in karate, and Assistant Instructor Kyt-Tee Kohout. Each 90-minute class begins with 30 minutes of qigong followed by 60 minutes of tai chi instruction. Instruction for beginners is separate from more experienced students. Each class builds on the last. You may observe the first class before committing to the full course.

Tai chi is a gentle, low-impact, mind-body exercise. It is both a martial art and meditation and is known for its health benefits. Many medical professionals recommend tai chi for improving balance as well as building muscle strength and reducing stress.

Learning tai chi is a lifelong practice, and practice sessions for all levels are offered year-round to support our club members. For more information, email SCOVTaiChi@gmail.com.

Cycling renews us. Getting outside in the clean air, taking in the incredible mountain views and biking with friends are some of the reasons we choose to live here. Oro Valley is one of the greatest biking destinations in the country. Wide streets, gorgeous bike paths, clean air and desert beauty draw cyclists from all over the country.

Cycling here is a dream come true for members of the Sun City Vistoso Cycling Club (VCC). With over 250 members and organized group rides four days per week, there’s a ride for everyone.

We support three local charitable organizations: Wheels for Kids, El Grupo and the Interfaith Community Food Bank. VCC volunteers build or repair and deliver over 400 bikes to kids in the Tucson area every year through the Wheels for Kids (WFK) program. WFK’s 40 volunteers have delivered over 4,600 bikes to charities such as Boys and Girls Club, Casa de los Niños and More Than a Bed. New volunteers are welcome.

For information or to join, visit our website. Ride. Have fun. Be safe.

Wheels for Kids is an all-volunteer effort, and we are always happy to welcome new people to our team. If you are interested in learning more, please visit our website or call Tom Terfehr. Help kids experience the same joy you had when you got your first bike.
