From the Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors eileenbscov@gmail.com Thank You, Rick Price by Eileen Buskirk The SCOV tag line is “it’s more than living, it’s a lifestyle.” That lifestyle is one of giving, sharing and living the best life possible. I know many read the testament to Rick Price last month, and I’m reiterating it. Many of us know Rick from our day-to-day encounters. I want the community to know all he does behind the scenes as well as the recent accolades. Rick is a past president of the Southwest Section PGA and Southern Chapter PGA. He has won numerous awards, including PGA Golf Professional of the Year six times in the Southwest Section PGA and Southern Chapter. Recipient of the Southwest Section Southern Chapter PGA Junior Golf Leader Award, Distinguished Service award, and most recently the Bill Strausbaugh Award. The latter is awarded to a PGA member who exemplifies exceptional character, integrity and leadership. As Director of Golf for SCOV, Rick has initiated programs to encourage all golfers from novice to expert to enjoy The Views experience. His efforts to enhance the Sun City lifestyle go beyond the golf course. Christmas brings a massive toy drive in cooperation with the Golder Ranch Fire Department. Monthly Yappy Hours on the driving range attract dog owners and dog lovers to meet and enjoy their furry friends. On Halloween, golf carts are decorated and local children (and children of SCOV staff) are encouraged to trick-ortreat. He ties golf events to charities that support the local community. Very few golf communities allow walking on the course before or after golfing hours, but Rick has always made this access a priority. As a member of the Oro Valley community Rick is involved in the First Tee, LPGA Girls Golf of Tucson, Feed My Starving Children, PGA HOPE and Ricki Rarick Junior Golf as well as other charity endeavors. The PGA said in presenting this prestigious award to Rick, “he has dedicated over 30 years of his career to mentoring assistants and associates by offering guidance and sharing his wealth of experiences. Through his unwavering commitment to mentoring, leadership and advocacy he has played

a pivotal role in shaping the careers of countless PGA and LPGA Professionals.” As director of Golf for SCOV he has developed a program to enhance the “lifestyle” for all of us. Congratulations Rick and thank you for all you do.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Protect Your Information In our interconnected digital age, where communication is paramount, a sinister practice known as spoofing has emerged as a looming threat. Spoofing refers to the deceptive technique where scammers manipulate caller ID information to appear as if the call is coming from a trusted source. This deceitful tactic is increasingly becoming a tool of choice for malicious actors seeking to exploit unsuspecting individuals. Some of our residents have fallen victim to this insidious ploy, receiving calls from an individual claiming to be an employee of SCOV. The caller, armed with convincing information, aims to gain the trust of residents, which then leads to insults and the use of foul language. This form of impersonation not only tarnishes the reputation of legitimate organizations but also jeopardizes the security and trust of the community. If a resident receives a suspicious call, purportedly from SCOV, it is crucial to respond with caution. First, do not disclose any personal or financial information over the phone. Legitimate organizations, including the SCOV HOA, will never request such information by phone. Residents are advised to hang up immediately and independently verify the legitimacy of the call. Contact SCOV directly using contact information obtained from the official website or documents. This ensures that residents are communicating with the legitimate entity and not falling victim to the deceptive tactics employed by spoofers. Second, residents should report any suspicious calls to both SCOV and the Oro Valley Police Department. Providing details about the call, including the phone number and any information received during the conversation, will aid in ongoing investigations, and help protect others from falling victim to similar scams. By responding to these calls with vigilance and taking proactive steps to report them, our community can combat the menace of spoofing, safeguarding our personal information and preserving the integrity of our trusted institutions.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Calendars for the Board and Committees You are now able to look at the Association fun and learning, board meetings and committee meetings from buttons located on the calendar page. From the website select News & Information and then select Calendar. On the calendar page select a button that displays these different options (Association Fun & Learning (HOA sponsored), Board Meetings, Committee Meetings. It took several service interactions with Skedda, which they were unfortunately unable to assist, and then some finagling on our part to come up with a system that would produce this information. You let us know it was used on the other calendar and are very glad to be able to provide it once again. It’s been about a year since this calendar program was launched and there’s still much to learn about it. When a reservation is made, Brenda Puzzele-Stoltz, Lifestyle Coordinator, receives an email and reviews it to make sure the information needed for the room setup is listed. If you want a drawing to be provided to the monitors, please submit that to Brenda and she’ll make sure it’s distributed properly. If you need a reservation for something other than the club or committee you’re registered to make rooms reservations for, please give Brenda a call and she’ll help you get that event reserved. We continually work at process improvement on the room reservation system and appreciate your feedback and support during this change.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Architectural Coordinator Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 Thanks to the NPC, AIG and ARC Prospective residents take tours of our neighborhoods and most remark about the condition of our properties in a positive way. As these tours and other visitors review our residential and common areas, many are surprised that we look this good for our age. Some of our homes are approaching 38-plus years old, but because we take such pride in our ownership, most are in extremely good shape and the yards reflect the same care and pride. In addition to residents taking care of their homes, several committees play a large part in the success of keeping our community looking great. The Neighborhood Pride Committee, the Architectural Inspection Group and the Architectural Review Committee all work together to support the Board in designing workable governing documents and enforcing the provisions of those documents. Countless hours are spent by those volunteers whose work helps to secure and add value to our investments. Thank you to all these volunteers. Your work is appreciated. Volunteers form the backbone of this community. If you are interested in playing an active part in helping to ensure the values of our homes, please consider volunteering with any of these groups.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Is It Better to Break My Exercise Sessions Up, or Exercise for a Longer Period? There are two distinct thoughts on this issue; both present fairly reasonable arguments. First, it takes 15-20 minutes to get your metabolism into the fat-burning zone that many people desire for an aerobic workout. Once you have reached that level, your body tends to obtain more of its energy from fat than carbohydrates. Using this argument, a single 90-minute workout will allow you to exercise in this fat-burning zone for at least 70 minutes, while two 45-minute sessions would allow you to be in this zone for at least 50 minutes (2 x 25). This logic supports a single, longer workout. Second, for six or so hours after a workout, your body remains in afterburn mode, burning more calories at rest than if you had not worked out. Using this logic, two sessions would produce two afterburn periods, resulting in more fat being burned than would be for a single workout session. The real bottom line is that if you exercise for 90 minutes a day, you're interested in more than just fitness (don't get me wrong, this is perfectly OK). To stay in reasonable cardiovascular shape, you need to perform aerobically for 20-30 minutes at least three times a week. If you wish to be in better than minimum acceptable shape, remember that you won't be in twice as good shape if you work out for twice as long. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held Thursdays, 1 pm. Stop in and sign up. Classes are limited. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns regarding the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2. Tuesday, February 13, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, February 14, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Tuesday, February 27, the AFC spa will be closed for cleaning until 1 pm.

An evident activity here in SCOV is that homeowners are constantly making upgrades to their property. Whether changing light fixtures or building additions, these upgrades are good for the community and they show a pride of ownership. Remember, there are Development Standards for most everything we do on the outside of the home. As important as the changes are to us, the community is very interested in maintaining a level of harmony. Some upgrades can be completed by reading and following the Standards. Others will require the Architectural Coordinator’s involvement. Many significant changes/upgrades need the eyes of the Architectural Review Committee. They will work as your advocate, to ensure that your goals fit within our Development Standards. They are also a resource, providing insight to what others have done. Take advantage of the available resources.

Code of Conduct Review Board Chair Marlene Branz 618-670-1063 conduct@suncityorovalley.com

The SCOV Code of Conduct (COC) strives to encourage, support, and help ensure more civil discourse and civil conduct within our community. The SCOV COC complaint process was developed to deal with serious violations of the Code of Conduct. We hope residents use the complaint process sparingly and honestly. To read the SCOV Code of Conduct, look on page 5 of the Owner and Resident Handbook. To file a complaint, look in the Member Services tab in the SCOV website. Issues not covered by the Code of Conduct complaint process include law enforcement issues, SCOV Facebook posts, ARC issues and any conduct outside the SCOV boundaries.

Initiatives 1 is to shorten the vote cycle, initiatives 2-16 are various issues to tidy up the documents after a review by the Nominating Committee, Election Committee, Association attorney, General Manager and the Board. There are two petition initiatives, which means a petition was circulated, signatures of the Membership were gathered to place these initiatives on the ballot. Initiative 17 is to allow one community run garage sale on residential lots each year. Initiative 18 is a question to sell the Copper Center. Biographical flyers written by the candidates are inserted into this Tipster for each candidate. This is a good tool to get to know the candidates a little better. Neighborhood Pride Jack Mooney 520-917-8087 scoroval@ciramail.com First Wed., noon, WC3 Please Be Careful It would be great if everyone was honest and followed the rules, wouldn’t it? Recently, there have been a couple of reports of businesses offering to do work or doing a job that

has caused our residents some issues. Here are a couple of things to remember: • Always consider getting quotes from several businesses before signing anything. Ask about their licenses and insurance, and check their references. Consider never hiring anyone who is unlicensed. Ask yourself, if they are good at what they do, why aren’t they licensed to do it? What if something isn’t done correctly? • If any business comes to the door offering their services, be sure they have a Town of Oro Valley Solicitor’s License. • If anyone tells you that you are on some violation list, please remember that SCOV will always notify you in writing of any Association violations you may have. You can always contact the covenants coordinator, Jack Mooney, for verification. Please be careful and do some checking before hiring anyone.

Posse Chair Linda Simōn 520-789-7169 posse@5LP.com First Tue., 3 pm, Desert Oasis www.scovaz.com/members/committees/posse

Most of us love our community and all it has to offer. One thing that often surprises me, however, is how many of us don't know our neighbors even though many have lots of friends in SCOV. Now is a good time to step outside and introduce yourself to your neighbors. Make sure you know their names and their phone numbers. I'm often called with a report that the neighbor's garage door has been open for a few days, or there's a water leak in their yard, or even that javelinas have knocked over their trash can and items are all over the street. I can't call the resident because the person reporting doesn't know their name or even the house number. Help us help others. Know your neighbors. Call them or go see them if you've noticed something isn't right. They will be more willing to help you when you show concern for them. For more information on the Posse, call Linda Simōn at 520-789-7169.

Properties Chair Jack Evert jackevert439@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 am, WC1 and Zoom

The Properties Committee does a complete on-site inspection of Association facilities twice a year. Items identified in the final report from that inspection are prioritized and sent to Administration, which then reviews the report and decides how to tackle the issues. As you might imagine, even this level of attention won’t pick up every issue. In this case, residents can help. There is a new feature available that you can use when you see something you think the committee should know about. Go to the SCOV website, click on Member > Committees and then the tab titled Agenda Item Request. The committee will get the request and take a look, whether you can attend our meeting or not. We appreciate your help in keeping our facilities shipshape.

Board Candidates Answer Questions See Election Committee article on page 8 for voting information. Information about Candidate Forums on February 5 and Ballot Initiative Forums on February 6 can be found in Coming Events on page 14.

Jim Cherry Why do you want to serve on the Board? I would like to serve on the Board as I have been living here for four years and want to continue my community involvement. I already have extensive knowledge of our governing documents and processes which will help me make informed decisions and engage quickly at Board meetings in a positive manner. This is my only home and I have a vested interest in seeing SCOV stay in good condition. I plan on living here for another 20 or so years and would like to maintain its affordability. When I do move onto the next chapter of my life, I plan for a good return on my investment, as I am sure many have planned for as well. Is there something specific you want to change or accomplish? I would like to assist the Board in its effort to improve upon the transparency it is already providing. By example, Accrual and Fund Accounting is a complicated process. With my Finance and Operation’s budgeting experience, which included presenting the facts, I would like to help improve upon the communication of results in a way that makes it easier for the community to follow. With greater understanding comes a more focused community effort towards SCOV remaining on the right side of the ledger. What knowledge, skills, and experiences do you bring? In terms of skills and experience, I have 25 years in Finance and 12 years in Marketing/Operations while working at BNSF Railway. I’ve had ongoing executive training in Leadership Development, Diversity, Process Improvement, and Expense Management. I’ve held several board positions during my 20 years with Lions Club International. As co-chair of the ARC, I understand the rules, policies, and standards we have in place and how they are a benefit for the whole community. My mantra, “Always let the facts get in the way of a good story.”

10

Janice Fischer Why do I want to serve on our Board of Directors? I cannot think of a better way to serve the community I love and treasure. Sun City Oro Valley is the most vibrant and active community to live in. The Board of Directors assist management in maintaining our chosen way of life in retirement. Is there anything I want to change? I cannot think of a single thing to change. Those who live here can offer to work on committees, participate in forums with candidates who have the same ideas of how to successfully transition from working to make a living and kicking back in retirement. My working career was seeing people find homes and communities they could thrive in. For approximately 40 years I worked with builders and developers in providing what was dreamed of and planned for.

Sherokee Ilse Why do you want to serve on the Board? We all want SCOV to be the best place to live, play and thrive. There is so much to be grateful for! Though we have had challenges of late, it’s time get back to our harmonious community. I pledge to do my part. We are a community first; members and leaders ought to feel their voices matter and all feel mutual respect. I want to promote that we are an ‘us,’ not a ‘we-them,’ even if we disagree, which is inevitable. And that we continuously seek fact-based, transparent conversations. Is there something specific you want to change or accomplish? Recently, I asked many homeowners what they love about SCOV and what concerns/suggestions they have to enhance our community. Their wide variety of opinions, expertise and ideas, helped direct me. I would like to: • Promote fiscal stability and sustainability. Seek belttightening measures, especially during high inflation times. There are serious concerns about how we will pay for everything in the SCOV budget. • Evaluate our financial challenges, balance our available cash and investments with affordable needs and wants, given that expenses are outpacing HOA dues. • Facilitate an open sharing of SCOV comprehensive financials, current and future, with and without the Copper Center renovation numbers…including a complete presentation of total building costs, current liquid assets (cash/investments), cash flow projections, and capital fund balances. • Record board meetings for all to watch later, record the votes at meetings and write more detailed minutes. Members evaluate the admin/staff/bd annually. Transparency brings trust. Trust reduces dissension. • Create a Welcoming Team to help new owners successfully navigate the transition into SCOV. Celebrate our many amenities, our neighbors and keep the joy flowing. • Build and support a community culture that invites and appreciates the many perspectives, ideas, expertise, and opinions of our residents. Labeling and separat-

ing into ‘groups’ divides us. Raising one another up strengthens us together. We are first a community. We hire administration/staff to support us and to manage our business, but not to manage our lives or behaviors. The board and admin’s job is to keep the owners' best interests at heart. What knowledge, skills and experience do you bring? • As a diligent researcher, with success in valuing and exploring various perspectives, I want to lend my skills to promote goodwill, work toward creative solutions and have more in-depth community conversations. • I will be a vigilant steward of your hard-earned retirement dollars. • I have been a board member and president of many groups/organizations. With all the many viewpoints, I will listen to understand and clarify before determining a course of action. • I research issues thoroughly to determine the full facts before making a decision. • I will be transparent, especially re: our fiscal situation. • I fully recognize that there are many ideas about what is good for the community; I will seek various opinions and work to bring people together whenever possible. • I will strive to maintain a positive working relationship with members and leaders in SCOV.

Tod Milton Why do I want to be on the Board? Sun City is a great community with which I have been associated for 31 years; my father and mother moved here in 1992 and my wife and I moved here in 2017. We have so many wonderful amenities in this community that it is virtually impossible to involve oneself with all of them. As a member of the Board I would be able to help and guide the future of the community to ensure Sun City remains the great place to live now and in the future. I feel a strong desire to serve in a positive and effective manner. Is there something specific you want to change or accomplish? I want very much to find a way to improve communication within the community. I understand that the residents of Sun City represent a very diverse group from a range of geographical locations and as a result that diversity of backgrounds and experiences can make communication complex. I look at that complexity as a challenge and one that good leadership and positivity can help to ameliorate. I am not, however, naïve enough to believe that all residents will come to agreement on all matters. However, a positive attitude and a willingness to compromise can be achieved with leadership. What knowledge, skills, and experience do you bring? I have a strong background in leading large and diverse organizations and in negotiating in some of the most challenging multi-cultural international environments. I am a trained and experienced leader who was routinely confronted with myriad complex challenges throughout my 45 years of military and civilian employment. I have a 30-year association with Sun City with the last six and a half full-time residency.

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, February 2024

Michael Pidone Why do you want to serve on the Board? To bring logic, common sense, and openness to the people of Sun City and to stop the spread of misinformation. Is there something specific you want to change or accomplish? Let everybody in Sun City–owners, renters, workers–know that we are in charge and will listen to worthy opposition. What knowledge, skills and experience do you bring? My extensive, practical knowledge of Sun City was acquired through owning here for over 30 years and using many of the facilities. I play pickleball, racquetball, bocce, and golf. I also water walk in the AFC pool almost every day. My skills and experience were acquired by 35 years with State Farm Insurance. I built my own agency by going door to door and talking with people. Maintaining my agency and running it well honed my skills and gave me a wealth of experience in talking with and listening to people and negotiating to reach agreements.

David Siegel Why do you want to serve on the Board? In the six years I have lived in SCOV, I have served on the Finance-Budget Committee, the Aquatic & Fitness Center Committee, and the Mountain View Plaza Task Force. I want to continue contributing to our HOA by serving on the Board. As a Board member, I would focus on our Association’s operating financials and the adequacy of its reserve account balances. Also, I would work to develop an on-going action plan for ensuring that SCOV’s offerings remain competitive with other active adult communities. Finally, I would want to understand and encourage resident input regardless of whether it is consistent with the board’s proposed action. Serving on the Board would allow me to have an impact in advocating for these and other issues. Is there something specific you want to change or accomplish? Yes, in addition to the items I discussed above, I believe it is important for the Board to comprehensively analyze the preferences and desires of our residents for amenity upgrades and additions, as well as residents’ desires for Copper Center. This type of Board review has yet to be done. These proposed upgrades/additions include new hardcourts, an exercise/leisure pool, additional solar for the AFC, and expanded space for our many clubs. We have limited capital reserve dollars available, and the Board should prioritize these desired projects based on residents’ preferences. In addition, once a particular project is selected, a realistic budget for the anticipated total cost should be developed at the outset before proceeding. What knowledge, skills and experience do you bring? I practiced real estate law for 20 years and then for a decade led a large real estate company with a substantial portfolio of properties. I have extensive experience in both property and asset management, budgeting, and review of property financials. In addition, I participated in numerous large scale real estate renovation projects. I also have board experience. I served as board chair of a 52-unit condomin-

ium, and I served on other boards, including a quasi-public state agency. All my experience required thorough analysis, consideration of differing viewpoints, and sound decisionmaking. I take seriously the fiduciary responsibility of board membership.

Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

The golf course is looking really good with the overseeded fairways outlined by dormant roughs. Overall, the golf course is in good condition, but a couple items continue to take away from its appearance. Golf cart traffic and improperly placed divot mix in non-overseeded areas continue to be an issue. Hundreds of rounds of golf are played each day. Individual golfers don’t realize the damage all these carts inflict on the turf over time. As the number of rounds has increased, the damage to high-traffic areas has also increased. The areas on #2 fairway at the 150 pole, the narrow end of #4 fairway, the end of #9 fairway in front of the 150 pole, and the right side of #14 approach are chronic traffic damaged areas. These areas have been staked off from traffic for the last couple of years to prevent turf damage. They are then able to recover in the early summer. Another blemish that impacts overall conditions is using sand/seed divot mix in non-overseeded areas. A pre-emergent herbicide is used in these dormant areas to prevent weeds from germinating, but when a golf club creates a divot, that chemical barrier is removed. When the divot is filled with seed, it creates green patches of ryegrass that are very visible and look like weeds. Please remember seed mix should only be used in green overseeded areas; don’t use seed mix in brown non-overseeded turf areas.

More than 140 SCOV residents are involved in the art of fusing glass. Fusing glass offers a myriad of possibilities for creating both functional pieces and artwork with color and form. Glass fusing teaches about how glass directly interacts with heat. Fusing requires a glass fusing kiln to provide the necessary degree of heat to create the project. The Stained and Fused "Fire and Ice" by Pat Jacoby Glass Club currently uses three kilns 365 days a year. One of these kilns reached the end of its life and needed to be replaced. The Foundation joined the club to purchase a new kiln. The club offers classes for new members to improve their skills as well as advanced classes. This group includes everyone from those newly diagnosed, currently in treatment, cancer survivors or those who are caring for someone with cancer. Our meetings include a valuable exchange of information and discussion with those who have had cancer and undergone chemotherapy, surgery or radiation treatment. We learn from each other. Sandie Roberts, SCOV resident who has a family member dealing with cancer, facilitates the group. The focus of this group is to share feelings and experiences with cancer risk, current cancer and post-cancer. We hold this safe space to be able to discuss all aspects of the disease.

If you need help with care for your loved one while attending the meeting, maybe we can help with that as well. We are collaborating with the "Good Neighbor Get Together Program" which is held at the Vistoso Community Church on Rancho Vistoso. Support Group for the Visually Impaired Judi Peterson 815-222-4754 Raven 505-469-7505, sivaraven@gmail.com Third Thu., 3-4:30 pm, Desert Oasis/Saguaro Room

All who are in any stage of visual impairment and their support persons are welcome to join us as we come together for mutual support. The goal of the group is to share resources, and to help make the possibility of limited vision less intimidating. We share technological and equipment advances that help enhance accessibility. Available at our Library is one such resource: The Country of the Blind, by Andrew Leland, which chronicles the author's journey from sightedness to blindness. It is, unfortunately, not yet published in large print, but is available through Amazon in audible form. We highly recommend it to anyone on this journey or interested in learning more about blindness. It is highly readable, both bittersweet and joyful, filled with tenderness and insights. Join us to learn and share more about resources in a supportive environment.

100th Birthday Longtime SCOV resident Verne Luther is turning 100 on February 29, 2024. Many will remember how he loved playing golf and reminiscing about World War II. He still has his home here, but is in assisted living in St. Louis. Let’s all shower him with birthday cards. Cards can be sent to his son's address: Verne Luther, 6415 Pumpkin Ridge Drive, Windsor, CO 80550.

Thank You Corner My heart overflows with gratitude for the overwhelming offers of support, cards, calls, flowers, food, hugs and prayers on the passing of my husband. Chuck loved the outdoors and the physical activities offered here. He often said: "It's another beautiful day in Paradise." I say it's not only the location, but your kindness that helps make it so. Clubs Arts, Crafts & Hobbies Art League Pres. Susan Taylor 719-205-6262 SusanCarolTaylor@aol.com What is scratchboard art? Faye Beckert is a talented scratchboard artist, and you may have seen her art at Art League hangings. Faye explained how scratchboard is created. Although basic steps alter depending on an artist’s preference, Faye starts with a flat board, a layer of white clay is applied, and then a final layer of black India ink. The artist then scratches off the black ink, revealing the white clay beneath. There are many tools available to scratch, Hide ’n seek scratchboard by Faye Beckert and Faye’s favorite is Exacto blade #11, which allows scratching fine details. Next, Faye mixes a variety of colored India ink to begin painting colors onto the scratched/exposed clay. If these new colors happen to splash over to the black ink, she finds her final clear seal “miraculously” corrects those issues. Faye says “This medium is the most forgiving to use; it's easy to scratch and adapts easily to correct mistakes.”

Bark Carving John Johnston 520-274-9888 johnjohnston@xplornet.com Tue., 1-4 pm, Thu., 9 am-noon, Artisan Center/Lapidary Dick Minch carved this whimsical house. We meet in the Lapidary Room which is located between Silversmith and the Wood Shop on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings. If you are interested in learning more, drop by. One of our carvers will be pleased to set you up with bark, tools and guidance. If you are already a carver, join us for conversation and mutual inspiration.

Clay Pres., Mary Murck 612-205-0084 mmurck@earthlink.net www.scovclayclub.com Joanne Wheeler has volunteered as a kiln master for the past two years. She feels that the most difficult aspect of this job is deciding which pieces are actually “kiln ready.” Maybe more fettling is required to prevent the glaze from dripping on the kiln shelf? Is the piece dry enough? Is there a hole in the bottom of that very solid-looking piece, so that it doesn’t explode in the kiln? Joanne notes that “Everything we put in Joanne Wheeler loading the Clay Club glaze kiln the kiln can affect everything else in the kiln. But things can happen. Don’t fall in love with your piece until it’s out of the kiln. Loading the kiln is a kind of puzzle. You want it all in but you want it safe.” In addition to Joanne’s kiln duties, she volunteers to head up the studio maintenance team along with Bonnie Klenda. We appreciate all of our volunteers who make our club run smoothly and happily.

Seniors For Kids donated either gift cards or money to six charity organizations: AVIVA and Ronald McDonald House, Family First, Tu Nudito, Three Points, Sunrise House and Tri-Community Food Bank. We wish to thank the organizations who contributed to us this year, and be assured we used the funds to help needy children. For example, one of our stops let us know they had 80 kids last year, but this year the number was 400. We are always happy to accept donations. Saturday, March 16, will be our first work day in the Wood Shop to assemble toys. Also, we sell hot dogs, drinks, coffee and donuts at the courtyard sale in March. Please look for our rummage sale that day as well. We are stocking our shelves to prepare for the months ahead and welcome anyone who would like to work to benefit children.

This income, as well as donations from the Tennis Club and residents, helps us to purchase supplies we need to keep the supply chain full. As always, we appreciate material donations of flannel and Poly-Fil stuffing. Our thanks for all the community support. Machine Embroidery

Coni Arseneau 217-398-1416 coniarseneau@gmail.com Carrie Wiley 360-734-5952 ecwiley@gmail.com Tue., 9-11 am, Artisan Center/Sewing www.scovhookers.weebly.com The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group meets on Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room. If you are interested in our group, stop by between 9-11 am. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learnProject by Carrie Wiley ing hooking. Tapestry is a textile art that is traditionally woven by hand on a loom like weaving. The difference between weaving and tapestry is the finished product. Both use two threads and a loom. One thread runs lengthwise (warp) and the other horizontally (weft). The product of weaving is generally cloth or fabric. In creating a tapestry, the weft threads are discontinuous which means each color is woven independently of the other. The finished product generally depicts an image or a scene rather than a pattern. We use the term “tapestry” in our name because our rug hooking projects generally depict a scene like a tapestry.

Poets Corner member Janice Fuller conveys so much more than just a story of catching fish in this poem that speaks of uncertainties, bravery and love by letting us inside the poet’s mind. Bullheads Just because we ate the bullheads / we caught in Blue Dog Lake on a summer prairie day / standing on the shore didn’t mean we had to eat them. Casting. Casting. Without a boat. / Fishing with my dad. Keeping what you caught, / except suckers or carp. Just because we ate those mushy bullheads/didn’t mean we were hungry or didn’t have enough, enough to buy / food or clothes or that one-per-person Christmas present. It was fear. / Fear that this might be true—someday. So we ate the bullheads / but I didn’t catch the fear, / didn’t cast about for it. We’d love to celebrate the new year with new additions to our group. Call for a Zoom invitation.
