The Red Bulls, currently tied with Sporting Kansas City for second place in the Eastern Conference with 39 points, will look to go unbeaten against D.C. in a season for only the second time in club history. New York’s last match was a 3-2 loss to Chivas USA last Sunday at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA. The last regular season meeting between the sides was on April 16, when New York defeated D.C. The Red Bulls are also in prime position in the teams’ third and final match of 2013 to win the Atlantic Cup – the trophy given to the victor of the New York-D.C. United regular season series. A win or a tie would ensure that the Red Bulls would take home the cup for the third time in four years. The Red Bulls will also look to go unbeaten against D.C. in a season for only the second time in club history (the other time was in 2010, when New York went 1-0-1).
The Red Bulls put pressure on Chivas USA in the first half and in the sixth minute, Thierry Henry chipped it to an onside Fabian Espindola, who raced in and shot it right at goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. Less than two minutes later, Kennedy was forced to make another save on Espindola after the Argentine forward received a feed from Henry.
The Red Bulls enter the weekend in a tie for second place in the Eastern Conference with Sporting Kansas City with 39 points off an 11-9-6 record, just two points shy of the first place Montreal Impact. Despite goals from Tim Cahill and Dax McCarty, a two-assist performance from Thierry Henry and a late rally, New York dropped a 3-2 decision to CD Chivas USA on August 25 at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA. Cahill had an on target chance in second half stoppage time cleared off the line by Chivas USA defender Bobby Burling to preserve the three points for the hosts. Led by head coach Ben Olsen, D.C. United is 10 th in the Eastern Conference and is coming off a 1-1 tie at home against Toronto FC at RFK Stadium last Saturday. United’s Dwayne De Rosario scored a spectacular long-range goal to put the hosts ahead in the 10th minute, but Bobby Convey’s strike 15 minutes into the second half helped give Toronto FC a point. United is 3-17-5 this season with 14 points and has won once in its last nine games. On March 16, New York hosted D.C. United in its home opener at Red Bull Arena and the sides played to a scoreless draw, despite the Red Bulls out-shooting D.C., 24-4. Fabian Espindola hit the crossbar twice and Henry and Cahill also forced D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid to make several big saves. On April 13, New York travelled to RFK Stadium and goals from Jamison Olave and Henry helped the Red Bulls secure the 2-0 victory and their first road win of the season. In the 29th minute, Dax McCarty sent the ball into D.C.’s defensive third to Henry. Henry’s shot from 25-yards out bounced past Bill Hamid and gave the visitors the 1-0 advantage. Olave added a goal in the 36th minute when Brandon Barklage flicked a corner kick towards goal and the Colombian redirected it in with his thigh. With the Red Bulls going 1-0-1 in 2013 versus D.C., New York has a chance to take home the Atlantic Cup – the victor of the season series between the sides – after United won it back last year. Based on the competition’s rules, the Red Bulls will earn the cup with a win or a tie. United would retain the cup if it wins by two goals or more on Saturday. NEW YORK FALLS TO CHIVAS USA, 3-2 Despite a late rally, the New York Red Bulls were unable to find a gametying goal and fell to CD Chivas USA, 3-2, at the StubHub Center Sunday afternoon. With New York down, 3-1, midfielder Dax McCarty scored his fourth goal of the season in the 86th minute to pull the visitors to within one, before Tim Cahill – who recorded New York’s opening tally in the 31 st minute – had his on-target volley cleared off the line by Chivas USA defender Bobby Burling in second half stoppage time, preserving the three points for the hosts. The loss kept the Red Bulls (11-9-6) in a second-place tie with Sporting Kansas City (11-9-6) at 39 points and two points adrift of Eastern
Kennedy again kept the Red Bulls scoreless with spectacular stop on Espindola in the 21st minute. Henry was played into space and passed it to Espindola, whose one-time shot was blocked by the Chivas USA goalkeeper. On the subsequent play, Cahill’s header from Henry’s corner kick was blocked off the line by Chivas USA. Despite New York’s chances, Chivas USA scored against the run of play in the 30th minute. Carlos Alvarez slipped it to Julio Morales, who cut to his left foot at the top of the box and put a low shot past goalkeeper Luis Robles. However, the Red Bulls responded immediately. Henry’s corner was headed by Cahill off the left post and over the line before Chivas USA defender Marco Delgado was able to volley it out, giving the Australian his seventh goal of the year. Chivas USA retook the lead and earned a penalty kick in first half stoppage time when Red Bulls defender Ibrahim Sekagya was adjudged to have fouled Erick Torres in the penalty box. Torres stepped up and sent Robles the wrong way to make the score, 2-1, heading into halftime. New York looked to tie the score in the 64th minute, as Jonny Steele cut it back to an open Henry. However, the Frenchman could not redirect the pass on target from 12-yards-out. Chivas USA hit the woodwork five minutes following Henry’s chance after a Torres roller was tipped by Robles off the left post. Torres scored the eventual game winner in the 81st minute, getting to a loose ball in the penalty box and putting it home. The Red Bulls were able to pull one back four minutes from full time, as McCarty nodded in a Henry free kick to make the score, 3-2, before Cahill had his right-footed attempt cleared off the line by Burling. Finally, Dax McCarty tallied his career-high fourth goal for New York in 2013. McCarty, in his eighth season in MLS, scored three goals in 2010 and 2012. CAHILL, MILLER CALLED UP FOR INTERNATIONAL DUTY New York Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill (Australia) and defender Roy Miller (Costa Rica) have been called by their respective national teams for upcoming international matches. Cahill will join the Australian National Team Sunday in preparation for their upcoming friendly with 2014 World Cup host Brazil (Sept. 7 in Brasilia, Brazil) while Miller was called into camp, as Costa Rica has CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers against the United States (Sept. 6 in San Jose, Costa Rica) and Jamaica (Sept. 10 in Kingston, Jamaica). This past summer, Cahill played a major role in helping the Australian National Team qualify for the 2014 World Cup. On the international level, Cahill has earned 63 caps for his country while scoring 28 goals. After joining the Red Bulls during the 2012 season, Cahill started in 12 regular season matches and two postseason games, notching a goal and three assists that year. Cahill has been influential for the Red Bulls in his first full MLS campaign and has started in 21 regular season matches this year. The 2013 MLS All Star is tied for the most goals on the team with seven and has also added three assists. Miller is the longest tenured Red Bull, having been with the club since 2010. This season, Miller has tallied 17 appearances and earned one assist. Over his four-year career in MLS, the Costa Rican has amassed 96 appearances, 87 of which were starts, and 12 assists. Miller has earned 44 caps for Costa Rica, scoring one international goal. The Ticos are currently in second place in CONCACAF qualifying with 11 points, two points shy of leader, the United States. WRIGHT-PHILLIPS MAKES DEBUT Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips made his MLS debut last Sunday at Chivas USA, coming on in the 58th minute for Fabian Espindola. New York signed Wright-Phillips on July 24. Wright-Phillips’ career started in 2004, when he graduated from Manchester City’s academy and played for the Premiership side until 2006. The 28-year-old then moved onto English side, Southampton, where he amassed 111 appearances and scored 22 goals. From 2009-11, Wright-Phillips featured for Plymouth Argyle before the former English Under-20 International moved to Charlton Athletic. At Charlton,
Wright-Phillips scored 31 goals in 82 games. Wright-Phillips was most recently at Brentford on loan, playing 15 matches and recording five goals. RED BULLS DEFENSE STAYS FIRM Backed by goalkeeper Luis Robles, the Red Bulls earned their eighth shutout of the season against Philadelphia on Aug. 17. New York defender Ibrahim Segakya made his first start at the back while Markus Holgersson began the match at right back for the first time this season. Robles is just one shy of the MLS lead in shutouts – a mark held by five different goalkeepers. RED BULLS-UNION HOSTS THIRD SELLOUT The Red Bulls-Philadelphia Union match on Aug. 17 was the third sellout of the season at Red Bull Arena this year. The 25,483 attendance announced at the sold out Red Bulls-Dynamo game on June 23 was the highest mark in club history since Red Bull Arena opened in March 2010. New York-LA Galaxy on May 19 was the first sellout of the year (25,219). New York is 7-2-3 at home in 2013. CAHILL MAKES RETURN After missing two matches, New York Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill returned to action Aug. 17 against the Philadelphia Union and played 90 minutes in the team’s 0-0 tie. Cahill suffered a torn PCL in his right knee on July 27 in New York’s 4-3 win after Real Salt Lake Yordany Alvarez delivered a hard tackle in the fourth minute. Despite sustaining the injury, Cahill scored the club’s first goal of the match in the 11th minute and played up until he was substituted off in the 85th minute against Real Salt Lake. In his first full season with the Red Bulls, Cahill has enjoyed a standout campaign, tallying seven goals and three assists in 21 starts. Cahill was named to the MLS All-Star Team but withdrew on Sunday due to the injury. In June, Cahill helped the Australian National Team earn qualification to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The former Everton and Millwall standout signed with New York on July 26, 2012. SAM RECORDS MLS PLAYER OF THE WEEK New York Red Bulls midfielder Lloyd Sam was named Major League Soccer’s Player of the Week for Week 23. Sam came off the bench and had an assist and the eventual game-winning goal in the Red Bulls’ 3-2 win over Sporting Kansas City Aug. 3 at Sporting Park, pushing the Red Bulls (11-7-5, 38 pts.) to first place in the Eastern Conference. The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). Making his 15th appearance of the season, Sam entered the game, tied at 11 at the time, in the 60th minute for Eric Alexander. Sam was instrumental in putting the Red Bulls up 2-1 in the 63rd minute, sliding a well-weighted through ball to an onside Fabian Espindola, who found the back of the net on the play. Six minutes later, Sam got his name on the scoresheet when he was able to collect a Jonny Steele cross on a counterattack, cut to his left foot and put it past goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen. Sam was forced to leave the game with a left quadriceps injury in the 87 th minute. Sam has made three starts for New York and tallied two goals and one assist in his first full season in MLS. He was signed by New York on Aug. 17, 2012 from England’s Leeds United and recorded five appearances, two starts and one assist last year before suffering a season-ending knee injury in October 2012. This is the second time a Red Bull has earned the MLS Player of the Week award in 2013. Midfielder Tim Cahill was the Player of the Week in Week 9.
RED BULLS VS. D.C. UNITED – AUGUST 31, 2013 – 8:00 PM ET KNOCKING THEM OFF In the Red Bulls’ recent four-game unbeaten run (3-0-1) that ended Aug. 10 at Columbus, they have defeated three then first place teams – the Montreal Impact on July 13 (4-0), Real Salt Lake on July 27 (4-3) and Sporting Kansas City (3-2). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, New York’s win over Sporting Kansas City was its first victory on the road over a team in sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference since its 1-0 victory over the Columbus Crew on April 26, 2003. RED BULLS SIGN AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL CARNEY The New York Red Bulls announced Aug. 8 that they signed defender/midfielder David Carney. “David is an experienced international player, who can play on the left side both as a defender and a midfielder, and he provides us much needed cover,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh. “He is versatile and athletic and has competed at a high level. We are pleased to bring David to New York and look forward to his contribution as a member of the Red Bulls.” Carney, who was most recently with Uzbekistan’s FC Bunyodkor, started his career with English side Everton, where he competed in academy and reserve sides. In 2005, Carney joined A-League club, Sydney FC and helped his side qualify for the Club World Championship. It was in 2006 when Carney earned his first call-up to the Australian National Team. Carney made a total of 33 appearances and tallied seven goals for Sydney FC. In August 2007, Carney signed with England’s Sheffield United, where he played until 2009. He also had a loan stint at Norwich City in 2009 and later in the year, moved to Dutch First Division side, FC Twente, helping his team win the Dutch League title for the first time in club history. Carney also played for England’s Blackpool (2010-11) and Spain’s AD Alcorcon (2011-12) before joining Bunyodkor. As a teammate of current Red Bull Tim Cahill, Carney has earned 46 caps for Australia and scored six goals. He was part of the Socceroos’ 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2007 and 2011 Asian Cup squads. SEKAGYA MAKES DEBUT, HELPS IN WIN Red Bull Ibrahim Sekagya, who signed on July 11, made his debut for New York Aug. 3, playing central midfield and the full 90 minutes in his team’s 3-2 win. Featuring mainly as a center back, Sekagya was previously with Red Bull Salzburg of the Austrian Bundesliga from 2007 to the conclusion of the club’s most recent campaign, playing in a total of 165 games and scoring six goals. Sekagya was part of the Red Bull Salzburg squad that won the Austrian Bundesliga title three times (2008-09, 2009-10 and 2011-12), League Cup once (2012) and served as captain during parts of his tenure. He began his professional career in Uganda and then went to Argentina in 2001, playing with Atletico de Rafela. The 32-year-old also enjoyed stints at Ferro Carril Oeste (2002-05) and Argentina first division squad, Arsenal de Sarandi (2005-07). Sekagya was a member of the Ugandan National Team and was part of the side’s 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns. He earned 26 caps, scoring three goals and was captain for his country until he retired from international soccer. LATE GAME HEROICS Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty’s third goal of the year – a 94th minute header to lead New York to a 4-3 win over Real Salt Lake on July 27 – was not the first time New York has seen late game heroics from one of its players. The Red Bulls have had six game winning goals and two game-tying goals after the 80th minute (forward Fabian Espindola had
recorded a game-tying goal in the RSL game). New York has scored 12 goals after the 75th minute. HENRY CAPTAINS MLS ALL-STARS New York forward Thierry Henry was named captain of the MLS AllStar team and played 57 minutes in their 3-1 loss to Italian side, AS Roma, July 31 at Sporting Park. Henry was voted onto the MLS Fan XI and earned his third-straight selection to the All-Star team. The Frenchman leads the Red Bulls with seven goals and five assists. With 38 goals, he is currently one goal from tying Clint Mathis for third all-time in regular season goals scored. In all competitions, Henry (39) is in a fourth place tie with midfielder Amado Guevara. He is currently one goal from tying Clint Mathis for third all-time in regular season goals scored. Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill was also named to the 2013 MLS AllStar Game’s 20-man gameday roster, earning his first-ever selection to the team as a Commissioner’s Pick. However, Cahill missed the match due to a PCL tear in his right knee and was replaced by Philadelphia’s Jack McInerney in the squad. IRON MEN Currently, goalkeeper Luis Robles and midfielder Eric Alexander are the only Red Bulls to have featured in every MLS game this season. In addition, Robles is the only player to have started each of the 26 matches New York has competed in. LUYINDULA SCORES FIRST MLS GOAL Red Bulls forward Peguy Luyindula recorded his first MLS goal of the season when he put in the team’s first penalty kick opportunity of the year in the 88th minute in New York’s 4-0 win over Montreal July 13. Lloyd Sam drew a foul on Montreal’s Jeb Brovsky to earn the opportunity. New York’s last regular season penalty kick opportunity came on Oct. 27, 2012, when Kenny Cooper scored against Philadelphia. Luyindula was signed on March 19, 2013. He was most recently with renowned French side, Paris Saint-Germain, where he played since 2007. During his time at PSG, Luyindula played in 179 games in all competitions, scoring 37 goals. Prior to joining PSG, Luyindula was with French club, Marseille, from 2004-05 before heading on loan to Auxerre (2005-05) and Spanish side, Levante at the start of the 2006 campaign. The 32-year-old started his career at Niort in 1997 before moving to Strasbourg for three-plus years. Luyindula was able to compete in the UEFA Champions League at Lyon from 2001-2004, scoring 46 goals in 126 appearances in all competitions while helping his team win two league championships. Luyindula has earned six camps for the French National Team, scoring one goal in a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
