In a battle between the two top teams in Major League Soccer, the Red Bulls and Seattle Sounders FC square off Sunday for the only time this season. New York is coming off a 1-0 win over FC Dallas, giving the Eastern Conference leader a four-game winning streak heading into the weekend. The Red Bulls can potentially clinch a playoff spot with a win or a tie based on other results around MLS. Seattle leads the Western Conference by two points entering the weekend following a 1-1 tie versus the LA Galaxy on the road last Saturday.

Looking to take charge of the match, the Red Bulls had an opportunity in the ninth minute as Jonny Steele chipped it towards the back post to Thierry Henry, who couldn’t get his volley on target. Five minutes later, David Carney’s 21-yard free kick sailed just wide of the mark. FC Dallas’ George John then nearly redirected an Eric Alexander cross in his own net but was saved by the right post, with the ball bouncing off the upright before the visitors were able to clear.

For Alexander, who is the only New York field player to have played in every Red Bulls match this year, he has already reached career-highs in games played (30), games started (29) and goals (3). The fourth-year midfielder was acquired from the Portland Timbers on Feb. 11 in exchange for allocation money. If Alexander plays against Seattle, it would mark his 100th regular season appearance in MLS. Steele is currently enjoying his second full season in MLS following an extended career playing for a number of teams within the United States. The 27-year-old has four goals to go along with six assists – a mark that is second on the team to forward Thierry Henry’s eight. He has also featured in 29 of 30 games for New York this year. Steele was signed by New York on Feb. 20 after the Red Bulls acquired the Northern Irishman’s first right of refusal from Real Salt Lake in exchange for a conditional supplemental draft pick. RED BULLS ROLL ON ROAD New York earned its fifth road win of the season on Sept. 8 at Houston to move its record away from Red Bull Arena to 5-7-3. The Red Bulls is in a three-way tie for second with Real Salt Lake and Seattle Sounders FC for most road wins in MLS. Sporting Kansas City leads with six. ACADEMY PRODUCT MIAZGA MAKES DEBUT Former Red Bulls Academy defender Matt Miazga made his professional debut on Sept. 31 at Houston, coming on for Markus Holgersson in the 76th minute. The 18-year-old played at centerback and helped keep the Dynamo at bay in the Red Bulls’ 4-1 win. Miazga was the eighth Red Bulls Academy product to sign with New York’s first team via the MLS Homegrown Player rule on May 30. Hailing from Clifton, NJ, he has represented the United States at the Under-18 level. He was a member of the Red Bulls Academy since 2009, when he played for the club’s Under-14 squad. The 17-year-old was part of the Under-16 Red Bulls side that won the U.S. Developmental Academy National Championship in 2012 and also played for the Under18 team. He has also featured for his country at other various U.S. Youth National Team age levels.
BUSTAMANTE MAKES IMPACT IN FIRST START Rookie midfielder Michael Bustamante earned his first MLS start against Toronto FC Sept. 14 and earned his first career assist after providing the initial pass to Dax McCarty that led to Thierry Henry’s 32nd minute goal. Bustamante had featured in three games as a substitute before the Toronto FC match. Peguy Luyindula replaced Bustamante in the 90 th minute.
The other former Red Bulls Academy players who graduated to the New York first team were: forward Giorgi Chirgadze (signed: Sept. 2009), forward Juan Agudelo (March 2010), midfielder Matt Kassel (Jan. 2011), defender Sacir Hot (Jan. 2011), defender Connor Lade (Dec. 2011), goalkeeper Santiago Castano (Dec. 2012) and Amando Moreno (Dec. 2012). Miazga is the fifth player to make his professional debut for New York, following Agudelo, Kassel, Lade and Moreno.
Bustamante, taken in the first round (13th overall) of the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft from Boston University, was a four-time America East All-Conference First Team and NSCAA All-Northeast Region selection. Despite missing the 2011 season due to a leg injury, the 2008 America East Midfielder and Rookie of the Year recorded a total of 69 games played, earning nine goals and 27 assists over his four-year college career.
FINDING THE BACK OF THE NET The Red Bulls are first in the Eastern Conference in goals scored with 47. New York is paced by Thierry Henry, who has nine goals, and Fabian Espindola and Tim Cahill (8). Both Montreal and New York trail Real Salt Lake (53) in goals scored.
ESPINDOLA TALLIES EIGHTH Red Bulls forward Fabian Espindola came off the bench, making his 150 th MLS appearance, and had an immediate effect on the score line, heading in his eighth goal of the season from an acute angle in the 80 th minute to give New York a 2-0 win on Sept. 14. The tally was Espindola’s 43rd in MLS play. He has made 26 appearances for New York his year. ALEXANDER, STEELE ENJOYING CAREER SEASONS In their first seasons as New York Red Bulls, midfielders Eric Alexander and Jonny Steele are enjoying career years. Alexander recorded his third goal of the year, while Steele chipped in with a goal and an assist in New York’s 4-1 win over Houston on Sept. 8.
RED BULLS WIN ATLANTIC CUP With New York going 2-0-1 against D.C. United this year, the Red Bulls won the Atlantic Cup for the third time in four years. It is only the second time in club history that New York has gone unbeaten against D.C. in a regular season (the other time was 2010, when it went 1-0-1). New York earned a 2-0 win over United at RFK Stadium on April 13 and a 0-0 tie at Red Bull Arena on March 16. ROBLES COMES UP BIG AGAIN Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles faced his eighth penalty kick of the year and his MLS career Aug. 31 against D.C. United and guessed correctly, going to his right to block Dwayne De Rosario’s attempt. His effort helped New York hang on to its 2-1 win. Robles, the only player

On April 7, Chicago’s Chris Rolfe was wide of the mark while on May 4, Robles stoned Columbus’ Federico Higuain en route to a 1-0 New York win. Robles (3-for-8) is tied with Greg Sutton (3-for-5), Tim Howard (3for-10) and Tony Meola (3-for-16) in penalty kick saves/penalty kick misses with three. No New York keeper has kept out/seen a miss four times. CAHILL MAKES IMPACT, BUT SUFFERS ANKLE INJURY Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill played as a forward on Aug. 31 against D.C. United and tallied a goal and an assist in New York’s 2-1 win. However, Cahill was set to miss up to four weeks due to a ligament tear in his right ankle following a tackle from Dejan Jakovic. The play occurred in the lead up to midfielder Lloyd Sam’s eighth minute goal. Cahill earned an assist on Sam’s tally. Cahill now has eight goals to go along with four assists this season. The Australian is not unfamiliar with scoring while injured. On July 27 in New York’s 4-3 win over Real Salt Lake, despite suffering a torn PCL following a Yordany Alvarez fourth minute tackle, Cahill ended up on the scoresheet with a goal seven minutes later. He went onto miss two games due to the injury. This 2013 MLS All-Star has been influential for the Red Bulls in his first full League campaign and has started in 23 regular season matches this year. BWP, CARNEY EARN DEBUTS Less than a week after making his MLS debut, Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips earned his first start in New York’s 2-1 win over D.C. United Aug. 31. He recorded his MLS debut Aug. 25 at Chivas USA, coming on in the 58th minute for Fabian Espindola. Last Sunday at Houston, Wright-Phillips recorded his first MLS assist on Jonny Steele’s 59th minute goal. In addition, defender/midfielder David Carney started at left back against United and played the full 90 minutes in his first MLS appearance. New York signed Wright-Phillips on July 24. His career started in 2004, when he graduated from Manchester City’s academy and played for the Premiership side until 2006. The 28-year-old then moved onto English side, Southampton, where he amassed 111 appearances and scored 22 goals. From 2009-11, Wright-Phillips featured for Plymouth Argyle before the former English Under-20 International moved to Charlton Athletic. At Charlton, Wright-Phillips scored 31 goals in 82 games. Wright-Phillips was most recently at Brentford on loan, playing 15 matches and recording five goals. Carney, who was signed on Aug. 8, was most recently with Uzbekistan’s FC Bunyodkor and started his career with English side Everton, where he competed in academy and reserve sides. In 2005, Carney joined A-League club, Sydney FC and helped his side qualify for the Club World Championship. It was in 2006 when Carney earned his first call-up to the Australian National Team. Carney made a total of 33 appearances and tallied seven goals for Sydney FC. In August 2007, Carney signed with England’s Sheffield United, where he played until 2009. He also had a loan stint at Norwich City in 2009 and later in the year, moved to Dutch First Division side, FC Twente, helping his team win the Dutch League title for the first time in club history. Carney also played for England’s Blackpool (2010-11) and Spain’s AD Alcorcon (2011-12) before joining Bunyodkor.
As a teammate of current Red Bull Tim Cahill, Carney has earned 46 caps for Australia and scored six goals. He was part of the Socceroos’ 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2007 and 2011 Asian Cup squads. KNOCKING THEM OFF In the Red Bulls’ four-game unbeaten run (3-0-1) that ended Aug. 10 at Columbus, they have defeated three then first place teams – the Montreal Impact on July 13 (4-0), Real Salt Lake on July 27 (4-3) and Sporting Kansas City (3-2). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, New York’s win over Sporting Kansas City was its first victory on the road over a team in sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference since its 1-0 victory over the Columbus Crew on April 26, 2003. SEKAGYA MAKES DEBUT, HELPS IN WIN Red Bull Ibrahim Sekagya, who signed on July 11, made his debut for New York Aug. 3, playing central midfield and the full 90 minutes in his team’s 3-2 win. Sekagya was suspended for New York’s match against Houston on Sunday following his red card against D.C. United on Aug. 31. Featuring mainly as a center back, Sekagya was previously with Red Bull Salzburg of the Austrian Bundesliga from 2007 to the conclusion of the club’s most recent campaign, playing in a total of 165 games and scoring six goals. Sekagya was part of the Red Bull Salzburg squad that won the Austrian Bundesliga title three times (2008-09, 2009-10 and 2011-12), League Cup once (2012) and served as captain during parts of his tenure. He began his professional career in Uganda and then went to Argentina in 2001, playing with Atletico de Rafela. The 32-year-old also enjoyed stints at Ferro Carril Oeste (2002-05) and Argentina first division squad, Arsenal de Sarandi (2005-07). Sekagya was a member of the Ugandan National Team and was part of the side’s 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns. He earned 26 caps, scoring three goals and was captain for his country until he retired from international soccer. LATE GAME HEROICS Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty’s third goal of the year – a 94th minute header to lead New York to a 4-3 win over Real Salt Lake on July 27 – was not the first time New York has seen late game heroics from one of its players. The Red Bulls have had six game winning goals and two game-tying goals after the 80th minute (forward Fabian Espindola had recorded a game-tying goal in the RSL game). New York has scored 16 goals after the 75th minute. HENRY CAPTAINS MLS ALL-STARS New York forward Thierry Henry was named captain of the MLS AllStar team and played 57 minutes in their 3-1 loss to Italian side, AS Roma, July 31 at Sporting Park. Henry was voted onto the MLS Fan XI and earned his third-straight selection to the All-Star team. Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill was also named to the 2013 MLS AllStar Game’s 20-man gameday roster, earning his first-ever selection to the team as a Commissioner’s Pick.
