Entering the week in a three-way tie for first place in the Eastern Conference, the Red Bulls will look to extend their unbeaten streak to 10 against Toronto FC when the two teams battle at Red Bull Arena. New York is coming off a 4-1 road win over the Houston Dynamo last Sunday with four different Red Bulls finding the back of the net. Toronto FC is in ninth place in the Eastern Conference and will play its third game in eight days following a 4-0 loss at Portland and 1-1 tie against Chicago Wednesday. New York is 1-0-1 versus Toronto FC this year.

New York moved into a three-way tie for first place in the east following a comprehensive 4-1 win over the Houston Dynamo last Sunday at BBVA Compass Stadium. Red Bulls Thierry Henry and Jonny Steele each had a goal and an assist as New York earned their fifth road victory of the year and moved to 45 points off a 13-9-6 record. The Red Bulls are equal on points with Sporting Kansas City and the Montreal Impact, which both won over the weekend. The first-place trio is six points ahead of the fourth-place Philadelphia Union. Toronto FC currently has 23 points and a 4-13-11 record this year and most recently fell to the Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field, 4-0, last Saturday and tied the Chicago Fire at home, 1-1, on Wednesday, with team leading scorer Robert Earnshaw finding the back of the net for the hosts. Under first-year head coach Ryan Nelsen, Toronto FC is in ninth place in the Eastern Conference. New York has recently controlled the series against its Canadian rival, going unbeaten in its last nine in regular season play (6-0-3 record). In this span, New York has scored 23 goals compared to Toronto FC’s five. This year, the Red Bulls are 1-0-1 versus Toronto FC, defeating the Reds 2-1 on April 27 and tying 0-0 on July 20. Both of those matches were played at BMO Field. All-time, the Red Bulls are 9-4-4 all-time against Toronto FC and 6-1-0 at home, including 3-0-0 at Red Bull Arena. NEW YORK ROLLS PAST HOUSTON, 4-1 The New York Red Bulls were able to ride a three-goal second half performance and keep pace atop the Eastern Conference with a 4-1 win over the Houston Dynamo Sunday at BBVA Compass Stadium. Thierry Henry and Jonny Steele each had a goal and an assist while Eric Alexander and Lloyd Sam also found the back of the net, as New York improved to 45 points off a 13-9-6 record, moving into a first place tie in the Eastern Conference with Sporting Kansas City. New York was able to take the lead following terrific buildup play in the 14th minute. After the visitors regained possession, New York played a series of passes in the middle of the field capped off with Alexander playing a give-and-go with Jonny Steele. Alexander got the ball back and curled it over goalkeeper Tally Hall and into the back of the net for his third goal of the season. However, Houston was able to tie the game four minutes later. Jason Johnson was able to control an Alex Lopez pass in the box and poked it by goalkeeper Luis Robles. Robles made a terrific stop in the 28th minute to keep the score tied, going to his right to palm a Will Bruin blast before diving to control it. On the other end, Henry was able to flick it over the top to Bradley WrightPhillips, as the English forward held off his defender before getting off a shot that Hall deflected out. Wright-Phillips then almost gave New York the lead seconds prior to the break, nodding a Kosuke Kimura cross on target. However, Hall was there to acrobatically swat the ball out. New York gained the lead for good two minutes into the second half. David Carney’s long ball was headed down by Wright-Phillips to Henry. Henry was able to weave alone into the box and slid it home. The Red Bulls then doubled their advantage in the 59th minute. Henry
was on the left wing and controlled a Carney pass. The Frenchman found Wright-Phillips, who chipped it to an onside Steele. Steele was able to round Hall and put it into the vacant net. With Houston pushing for another goal, the Red Bulls wrapped up the result two minutes from full time. Sam controlled a Henry diagonal pass on the right wing and played a one-two with Peguy Luyindula. ALEXANDER, STEELE ENJOYING CAREER SEASONS In their first seasons as New York Red Bulls, midfielders Eric Alexander and Jonny Steele are enjoying career years. Alexander recorded his third goal of the year, while Steele chipped in with a goal and an assist in New York’s 4-1 win over Houston last Sunday. For Alexander, who is the only New York field player to have played in every Red Bulls match this year, he has already reached career-highs in games played (28), games started (27) and goals (3). The fourth-year midfielder was acquired from the Portland Timbers on Feb. 11 in exchange for allocation money. Steele is currently enjoying his second full season in MLS following an extended career playing for a number of teams within the United States. The 27-year-old has four goals to go along with six assists – a mark that is second on the team to forward Thierry Henry’s eight. He has also featured in 27 of 28 games for New York this year. Steele was signed by New York on Feb. 20 after the Red Bulls acquired the Northern Irishman’s first right of refusal from Real Salt Lake in exchange for a conditional supplemental draft pick. RED BULLS ROLL ON ROAD New York earned its fifth road win of the season on Sunday to move its record away from Red Bull Arena to 5-7-3. The Red Bulls moved into a four-way tie with Sporting Kansas City, Real Salt Lake and Seattle Sounders FC for most road wins in MLS. SAM STAYS HOT, SCORING IN SECOND-STRAIGHT Red Bulls midfielder Lloyd Sam earned his second-straight start and did not disappoint, recording a goal in New York’s 4-1 win over Houston last Sunday – a week after the Englishman scored versus D.C. United.
Under-18 level. He was a member of the Red Bulls Academy since 2009, when he played for the club’s Under-14 squad. The 17-year-old was part of the Under-16 Red Bulls side that won the U.S. Developmental Academy National Championship in 2012 and also played for the Under18 team. He has also featured for his country at other various U.S. Youth National Team age levels. The other former Red Bulls Academy players who graduated to the New York first team were: forward Giorgi Chirgadze (signed: Sept. 2009), forward Juan Agudelo (March 2010), midfielder Matt Kassel (Jan. 2011), defender Sacir Hot (Jan. 2011), defender Connor Lade (Dec. 2011), goalkeeper Santiago Castano (Dec. 2012) and Amando Moreno (Dec. 2012). Miazga is the fifth player to make his professional debut for New York, following Agudelo, Kassel, Lade and Moreno. RED BULLS WIN ATLANTIC CUP With New York going 2-0-1 against D.C. United this year, the Red Bulls won the Atlantic Cup for the third time in four years. It is only the second time in club history that New York has gone unbeaten against D.C. in a regular season (the other time was 2010, when it went 1-0-1). New York earned a 2-0 win over United at RFK Stadium on April 13 and a 0-0 tie at Red Bull Arena on March 16. ROBLES COMES UP BIG AGAIN Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles faced his eighth penalty kick of the year and his MLS career Aug. 31 against D.C. United and guessed correctly, going to his right to block Dwayne De Rosario’s attempt. His effort helped New York hang on to its 2-1 win. Robles, the only player for New York who has started every game this season, has been scored on five times from the penalty spot. On April 7, Chicago’s Chris Rolfe was wide of the mark while on May 4, Robles stoned Columbus’ Federico Higuain en route to a 1-0 New York win. Robles (3-for-8) is tied with Greg Sutton (3-for-5), Tim Howard (3for-10) and Tony Meola (3-for-16) in penalty kick saves/penalty kick misses with three. No New York keeper has kept out/seen a miss four times.
Previously, Sam was named Major League Soccer’s Player of the Week for Week 23. Sam came off the bench and had an assist and the eventual game-winning goal in the Red Bulls’ 3-2 win over Sporting Kansas City Aug. 3 at Sporting Park.
CAHILL MAKES IMPACT, BUT SUFFERS ANKLE INJURY Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill played as a forward on Aug. 31 against D.C. United and tallied a goal and an assist in New York’s 2-1 win. However, Cahill was set to miss up to four weeks due to a ligament tear in his right ankle following a tackle from Dejan Jakovic. The play occurred in the lead up to midfielder Lloyd Sam’s eighth minute goal. Cahill earned an assist on Sam’s tally.
Making his 15th appearance of the season, Sam entered the game, tied at 11 at the time, in the 60th minute for Eric Alexander. Sam was instrumental in putting the Red Bulls up 2-1 in the 63rd minute, sliding a well-weighted through ball to an onside Fabian Espindola, who found the back of the net on the play. Six minutes later, Sam got his name on the scoresheet when he was able to collect a Jonny Steele cross on a counterattack, cut to his left foot and put it past goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen. Sam was forced to leave the game with a left quadriceps injury in the 87 th minute.
Cahill now has a team-high eight goals to go along with four assists this season. The Australian is not unfamiliar with scoring while injured. On July 27 in New York’s 4-3 win over Real Salt Lake, despite suffering a torn PCL following a Yordany Alvarez fourth minute tackle, Cahill ended up on the scoresheet with a goal seven minutes later. He went onto miss two games due to the injury. This 2013 MLS All-Star has been influential for the Red Bulls in his first full League campaign and has started in 22 regular season matches this year.
It was the second time a Red Bull has earned the MLS Player of the Week award in 2013. Midfielder Tim Cahill was the Player of the Week in Week 9.
BWP, CARNEY EARN DEBUTS Less than a week after making his MLS debut, Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips earned his first start in New York’s 2-1 win over D.C. United Aug. 31. He recorded his MLS debut Aug. 25 at Chivas USA, coming on in the 58th minute for Fabian Espindola. Last Sunday at Houston, Wright-Phillips recorded his first MLS assist on Jonny Steele’s 59th minute goal.
Sam, who found the back of the net in Houston following a Peguy Luyindula feed, now has four goals this season.
ACADEMY PRODUCT MIAZGA MAKES DEBUT Former Red Bulls Academy defender Matt Miazga made his professional debut on Sunday at Houston, coming on for Markus Holgersson in the 76th minute. The 18-year-old played at centerback and helped keep the Dynamo at bay in the Red Bulls’ 4-1 win. Miazga was the eighth Red Bulls Academy product to sign with New York’s first team via the MLS Homegrown Player rule on May 30. Hailing from Clifton, NJ, he has represented the United States at the

The 28-year-old then moved onto English side, Southampton, where he amassed 111 appearances and scored 22 goals. From 2009-11, Wright-Phillips featured for Plymouth Argyle before the former English Under-20 International moved to Charlton Athletic. At Charlton, Wright-Phillips scored 31 goals in 82 games. Wright-Phillips was most recently at Brentford on loan, playing 15 matches and recording five goals. Carney, who was signed on Aug. 8, was most recently with Uzbekistan’s FC Bunyodkor and started his career with English side Everton, where he competed in academy and reserve sides. In 2005, Carney joined A-League club, Sydney FC and helped his side qualify for the Club World Championship. It was in 2006 when Carney earned his first call-up to the Australian National Team. Carney made a total of 33 appearances and tallied seven goals for Sydney FC. In August 2007, Carney signed with England’s Sheffield United, where he played until 2009. He also had a loan stint at Norwich City in 2009 and later in the year, moved to Dutch First Division side, FC Twente, helping his team win the Dutch League title for the first time in club history. Carney also played for England’s Blackpool (2010-11) and Spain’s AD Alcorcon (2011-12) before joining Bunyodkor. As a teammate of current Red Bull Tim Cahill, Carney has earned 46 caps for Australia and scored six goals. He was part of the Socceroos’ 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2007 and 2011 Asian Cup squads. FINDING THE BACK OF THE NET The Red Bulls are in second in the Eastern Conference in goals scored with 44, one behind the Montreal Impact. The Red Bulls are paced by Tim Cahill and Thierry Henry, who each have eight goals. Both Montreal and New York trail Real Salt Lake (52) in goals scored. RED BULLS-UNION HOSTS THIRD SELLOUT The Red Bulls-Philadelphia Union match on Aug. 17 was the third sellout of the season at Red Bull Arena this year. The 25,483 attendance announced at the sold out Red Bulls-Dynamo game on June 23 was the highest mark in club history since Red Bull Arena opened in March 2010. New York-LA Galaxy on May 19 was the first sellout of the year (25,219). New York is 8-2-3 at home in 2013. KNOCKING THEM OFF In the Red Bulls’ four-game unbeaten run (3-0-1) that ended Aug. 10 at Columbus, they have defeated three then first place teams – the Montreal Impact on July 13 (4-0), Real Salt Lake on July 27 (4-3) and Sporting Kansas City (3-2). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, New York’s win over Sporting Kansas City was its first victory on the road over a team in sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference since its 1-0 victory over the Columbus Crew on April 26, 2003. SEKAGYA MAKES DEBUT, HELPS IN WIN Red Bull Ibrahim Sekagya, who signed on July 11, made his debut for New York Aug. 3, playing central midfield and the full 90 minutes in his team’s 3-2 win. Sekagya was suspended for New York’s match against Houston on Sunday following his red card against D.C. United on Aug. 31. Featuring mainly as a center back, Sekagya was previously with Red Bull
Salzburg of the Austrian Bundesliga from 2007 to the conclusion of the club’s most recent campaign, playing in a total of 165 games and scoring six goals. Sekagya was part of the Red Bull Salzburg squad that won the Austrian Bundesliga title three times (2008-09, 2009-10 and 2011-12), League Cup once (2012) and served as captain during parts of his tenure. He began his professional career in Uganda and then went to Argentina in 2001, playing with Atletico de Rafela. The 32-year-old also enjoyed stints at Ferro Carril Oeste (2002-05) and Argentina first division squad, Arsenal de Sarandi (2005-07). Sekagya was a member of the Ugandan National Team and was part of the side’s 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns. He earned 26 caps, scoring three goals and was captain for his country until he retired from international soccer. LATE GAME HEROICS Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty’s third goal of the year – a 94th minute header to lead New York to a 4-3 win over Real Salt Lake on July 27 – was not the first time New York has seen late game heroics from one of its players. The Red Bulls have had six game winning goals and two game-tying goals after the 80th minute (forward Fabian Espindola had recorded a game-tying goal in the RSL game). New York has scored 14 goals after the 75th minute. HENRY CAPTAINS MLS ALL-STARS New York forward Thierry Henry was named captain of the MLS AllStar team and played 57 minutes in their 3-1 loss to Italian side, AS Roma, July 31 at Sporting Park. Henry was voted onto the MLS Fan XI and earned his third-straight selection to the All-Star team. Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill was also named to the 2013 MLS AllStar Game’s 20-man gameday roster, earning his first-ever selection to the team as a Commissioner’s Pick. However, Cahill missed the match due to a PCL tear in his right knee and was replaced by Philadelphia’s Jack McInerney in the squad. IRON MEN Currently, goalkeeper Luis Robles and midfielder Eric Alexander are the only Red Bulls to have featured in every MLS game this season. In addition, Robles is the only player to have started each of the 28 matches New York has competed in. BULLS ON PARADE The Red Bulls earned their first seven-game unbeaten run (5-0-2) for only the third time in club history and first time in 10 years before the streak was snapped in the team’s last match against Vancouver on June 1 – a 2-1 defeat.
