FIRE The first place New York Red Bulls will battle the Chicago Fire at Red Bull Arena at 5:00 PM in an important match that will decide the winner of the MLS Supporters’ Shield (TV: MSG – Pre-Game Show at 4:30 PM, UniMas; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM). Postseason-bound New York has destiny in its own hands and a win against Chicago would ensure that the Red Bulls would capture the MLS Supporters’ Shield – awarded to the team with the most points in the regular season – for the first time ever in club history. The Red Bulls are riding a seven-game unbeaten streak (5-0-2) and are coming off a 3-0 win over the Houston Dynamo on Sunday on the road. New York got goals from Tim Cahill, Ibrahim Sekagya and Bradley Wright-Phillips, as the Red Bulls swept their season series against the Dynamo. With 56 points, the Red Bulls held a one-point lead over Sporting Kansas City and a two-point advantage over the Portland Timbers. They are tie with Real Salt Lake entering the final week of MLS play in the shield race, following Salt Lake’s 2-1 win over Chivas USA last Wednesday in their last match of the season. With Kansas City and Portland playing Saturday, New York will know before it takes the field if it needs the full three points to earn its first silverware. The Red Bulls host a Chicago squad that is trying to make the MLS Cup Playoffs. The Fire defeated Toronto FC, 1-0, last Saturday at TOYOTA Park with former New York and LA Galaxy forward Mike Magee scoring a second half penalty kick goal. Chicago enters the weekend in a third-place tie with the Montreal Impact with 49 points and a 14-12-7 record and would secure a spot in the playoffs with a win. Magee is in the thick of the MLS Golden Boot race with a League-high 20 goals this year. The Fire has lost just once in its last seven and is unbeaten in its last four (3-0-1). In the teams’ only match of the season on April 7, the Fire earned a 3-1 win at TOYOTA Park. After Jamison Olave put the visitors in front, the Fire got two goals from Maicon Santos and a tally from Daniel Paladini to earn the three points. New York went ahead after Cahill scored the fastest goal in MLS history. Off the kickoff, the ball was played back to Dax McCarty, who launched it towards the Australian. Cahill was able to control the feed with his chest and spectacularly ripped it with his right foot over goalkeeper Tally Hall and into the back of the net. The tally broke the record set by Dwayne De Rosario, who scored for the San Jose Earthquakes in 11 seconds against Dallas on Sept. 27, 2003. Houston threatened New York’s defense following Cahill’s opener and its best chance of the opening half came in the 33rd minute. Brad Davis’ corner kick bounced around the box before Will Bruin was able to push the ball towards goal. However, Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles was there to make the save. Playing for a possible postseason spot, the hosts continued their pressure and nearly got the equalizer in the 59th minute, as Boniek Garcia headed a Kofi Sarkodie cross just past the left post. The Red Bulls doubled their advantage in the 65th minute. After a New York corner kick, McCarty chipped it towards the six yard box. CHICAGO FIRE – OCTOBER 27, 2013 – 5:00 PM ET CAHILL SCORES FASTEST GOAL IN MLS HISTORY Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill continued his stellar season for New York, scoring the fastest goal in MLS history when he found the back of the net in just eight seconds against the Dynamo last Sunday. The tally broke the record set by Dwayne De Rosario, who scored for the San Jose Earthquakes in 11 seconds against Dallas on Sept. 27, 2003. The Australian leads New York with 11 goals this season. Cahill has been on a roll with seven goals and one assist in the last 10 games and he was the hero again for New York, notching his 10th goal of the year when he provided the game-tying tally in his team’s 2-2 tie against New England Oct. 5 when he headed in a loose ball in the box. The tally came six days after he scored in the 76th minute in the team’s 1-1 tie against Seattle on Sept. 29. Cahill has five game-winning goals this season. In addition, Cahill has accounted for the five of the 11 game tying or winning goals that the Red Bulls have tallied after the 75 th minute. Against Seattle, the Australian was in his second match back following his recovery from a ligament tear in his right ankle suffered against D.C. United on Aug. 31 (He was only unavailable for one match – New York’s 4-1 win over Houston Sept. 8). Despite sustaining the injury in the match, Cahill went onto deposit the eventual match-winning goal. Cahill is not unfamiliar with scoring while injured. On July 27 in New York’s 4-3 win over Real Salt Lake, despite suffering a torn PCL following a Yordany Alvarez fourth-minute tackle, Cahill ended up on the scoresheet with a goal seven minutes later. He went on to miss two games due to the injury. The 2013 MLS All-Star has been influential for the Red Bulls in his first full League campaign and has started in 26 regular season matches this year. KEEPING IT CLEAN The New York Red Bulls defense earned its 11th shutout of the season in their 3-0 win over the Houston Dynamo on Oct. 20. Continuing his streak of being the only Red Bull to start in every one of New York’s matches this season, goalkeeper Luis Robles is fourth in shutouts this year. Robles has tied the club single-season record of 11 set by Bouna Coundoul in 2010. He has already set the single season club record for goalkeeper wins with 16, surpassing Coundoul (2010) and Tony Meola (1996, 98) who each had 14. SEKAGYA, WRIGHT-PHILLIPS OPEN ACCOUNTS Defender Ibrahim Sekagya and forward Bradley Wright-Phillips each scored their first MLS goals in the second half of New York’s 3-0 win over Houston last Sunday. Featuring mainly as a center back, Sekagya was previously with Red Bull Salzburg of the Austrian Bundesliga from 2007 to the conclusion of the club’s most recent campaign, playing in a total of 165 games and scoring six goals. Sekagya was part of the Red Bull Salzburg squad that won the Austrian Bundesliga title three times (2008-09, 2009-10 and 2011-12), League Cup once (2012) and served as captain during parts of his tenure. He began his professional career in Uganda and then went to Argentina in 2001, playing with Atletico de Rafela. The 32-year-old also enjoyed stints at Ferro Carril Oeste (2002-05) and Argentina first division squad, Arsenal de Sarandi (2005-07). Sekagya was a member of the Ugandan National Team and was part of the side’s 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns. He earned 26 caps, scoring three goals and was captain for his country until he retired from international soccer. New York signed Wright-Phillips on July 24. His career started in 2004, when he graduated from Manchester City’s academy and played for the Premiership side until 2006. The 28-year-old then moved onto English side, Southampton, where he amassed 111 appearances and scored 22 goals. From 2009-11, Wright-Phillips featured for Plymouth Argyle before the former English Under-20 International moved to Charlton Athletic. At Charlton, Wright-Phillips scored 31 goals in 82 games.
Wright-Phillips was most recently at Brentford on loan, playing 15 matches and recording five goals. MATCHING CLUB WINS If the Red Bulls earn a victory against the Fire on Sunday, it will match the club regular season high set in 2000, when New York won 17 games. IRON MEN Currently, goalkeeper Luis Robles and midfielder Eric Alexander are the only Red Bulls to have featured in every MLS game this season. In addition, Robles is the only player to have started each of the 33 matches New York has competed in. ESPINDOLA ONE AWAY FROM SEASON-HIGH Fabian Espindola scored his ninth goal against New England on Oct. 5 in New York’s 2-2 tie. Espindola, who made his 28th appearance of the year, matched his goal tally from 2012 and is one shy of matching his career high of 10 that he set in 2011. The Argentine, who was acquired along with Jamison Olave in exchange for allocation money on Dec. 3, 2012, has recorded at least nine goals in each of the past three seasons. HOME SWEET HOME With a 10-2-4 record at Red Bull Arena and an eight-game home unbeaten run entering Sunday’s match, the Red Bulls will look to finish the regular season on a high note before entering the MLS Cup Playoffs. New York is unbeaten (6-0-1) in its last seven regular season home finales. RED BULLS ROLL ON ROAD New York earned its six road win of the season on Sunday at Houston and moved its record away from Red Bull Arena to 6-7-4. The Red Bulls are in a tie for second-best winning percentage on the road in MLS (.471) according to Elias Sports Bureau and their six wins are only one shy of the League-high set by Sporting Kansas City. The Red Bulls enter the week second for most road goals scored with 24 (Real Salt Lake leads with 26). HENRY MOVES UP THE CHARTS Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry is continuing his climb up the club’s statistical charts. The three-time MLS All-Star notched his team-high ninth goal in New York’s 2-0 win over Toronto FC Sept. 14. The goal, his second in as many games, put him in sole possession of third place alltime in regular season goals scored with 40, surpassing Clint Mathis. Henry’s eight assists this year have pushed him in sole possession of third place in that category. ALEXANDER, STEELE ENJOYING CAREER SEASONS In their first seasons as New York Red Bulls, midfielders Eric Alexander and Jonny Steele are enjoying career years. Alexander recorded his third

For Alexander, who is the only New York field player to have played in every Red Bulls match this year, he has already reached career-highs in games played (33), games started (30) and goals (3). The fourth-year midfielder was acquired from the Portland Timbers on Feb. 11 in exchange for allocation money. Alexander made his 100th regular season appearance in MLS Sept. 29 at Seattle, coming on as a second half substitute for Lloyd Sam. Steele is currently enjoying his second full season in MLS following an extended career playing for a number of teams within the United States. The 27-year-old has four goals to go along with six assists – a mark that is second on the team to forward Thierry Henry’s eight. He has also featured in 32 of 33 games for New York this year. Steele was signed by New York on Feb. 20 after the Red Bulls acquired the Northern Irishman’s first right of refusal from Real Salt Lake in exchange for a conditional supplemental draft pick. ACADEMY PRODUCT MIAZGA MAKES DEBUT Former Red Bulls Academy defender Matt Miazga made his professional debut on Sept. 8 at Houston, coming on for Markus Holgersson in the 76th minute. The 18-year-old played at centerback and helped keep the Dynamo at bay in the Red Bulls’ 4-1 win. Miazga was the eighth Red Bulls Academy product to sign with New York’s first team via the MLS Homegrown Player rule on May 30. Hailing from Clifton, NJ, he has represented the United States at the Under-18 level. He was a member of the Red Bulls Academy since 2009, when he played for the club’s Under-14 squad. The 17-year-old was part of the Under-16 Red Bulls side that won the U.S. Developmental Academy National Championship in 2012 and also played for the Under18 team. He has also featured for his country at other various U.S. Youth National Team age levels. The other former Red Bulls Academy players who graduated to the New York first team were: forward Giorgi Chirgadze (signed: Sept. 2009), forward Juan Agudelo (March 2010), midfielder Matt Kassel (Jan. 2011), defender Sacir Hot (Jan. 2011), defender Connor Lade (Dec. 2011), goalkeeper Santiago Castano (Dec. 2012) and Amando Moreno (Dec. 2012). Miazga is the fifth player to make his professional debut for New York, following Agudelo, Kassel, Lade and Moreno.
FINDING THE BACK OF THE NET The Red Bulls are in first in the Eastern Conference in goals scored with 53, three ahead of the Montreal Impact. New York is paced by Tim Cahill, who has 11 goals, and Thierry Henry (9), and Fabian Espindola (8). New York trails Real Salt Lake (57) in Major League Soccer in this category. RED BULLS WIN ATLANTIC CUP With New York going 2-0-1 against D.C. United this year, the Red Bulls won the Atlantic Cup for the third time in four years. It is only the second time in club history that New York has gone unbeaten against D.C. in a regular season (the other time was 2010, when it went 1-0-1). New York earned a 2-0 win over United at RFK Stadium on April 13 and a 0-0 tie at Red Bull Arena on March 16. ROBLES COMES UP BIG AGAIN Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles faced his eighth penalty kick of the year and his MLS career Aug. 31 against D.C. United and guessed correctly, going to his right to block Dwayne De Rosario’s attempt. His effort helped New York hang on to its 2-1 win. Robles has been scored on seven times from the penalty spot following Lee Nguyen’s successful conversion on Oct. 5 in New York’s 2-2 tie with New England. On April 7, Chicago’s Chris Rolfe was wide of the mark while on May 4, Robles stoned Columbus’ Federico Higuain en route to a 1-0 New York win. Robles (3-for-9) is tied with Greg Sutton (3-for-5), Tim Howard (3for-10) and Tony Meola (3-for-16) in penalty kick saves/penalty kick misses with three. No New York keeper has kept out/seen a miss four times.
