Spring Edition 2019 cultures which generously caters for just about every taste imaginable and has much to offer you for an authentic, and memorable holiday.

sn't the Spring season just so lovely ... when it arrives it seems to wake up everything in nature. The trees get full of new green leaves and branches, and all the flowers become more fresh and colourful too. I have a real appreciation for the beginning of Spring. It is indeed a time of rebirth, of new beginnings and growth. The business world also seems to wake up from the winter grind with opportunities sprouting all over. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has power and magic in it, and believing in yourself is the first secret to success. If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you.

I

We celebrate our 50th Issue this season which is indeed quite a milestone in the print industry these days. This delightful magazine has been around on our coast for 21 years as well. The Pulse Magazine was originally established in January 1998. Through the years it has gone through a few changes in size, being A5 to A6, and then the name from “The Entertainer” to “The South Coaster” and then finally to what we all now have come to know as 'The Pulse KZN Magazine”.

To all my loyal advertisers thank you for making this Spring issue possible. By advertising in this magazine you are enabling me to bring this handy and helpful holiday book not only to our tourists, but it is also an informative guide for our locals living here too. Each establishment plays a vital role in the success of our coastline and I am proud as your Editor to be representing you.

Hello Spring .. a lovely reminder of how beautiful change can truly be. Keep your finger on the Pulse … the Heart Beat of the South Coast.

In this “little book” you can discover the KZN South Coast as well as see a few other advertisers “off” our southern coastline that have chosen to be a part of this publication to showcase their business. Kwa-Zulu Natal is a melting pot of African, European and Indian

Whatever you'd like to contribute. WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU. SAVE OUR PLANET Dear Editor, I am an avid advocate for saving the planet. I have gone to many restaurants not only on the South Coast but in other area's too where the restaurant charges a small fee for paper straws or biodegradable take away boxes/cups, etc. I do understand the cost of the eco-friendly products is higher than the regular products but this is to the restaurant's discretion, but why should we pay when we are doing a “good deed” towards saving our planet and environment? Surely the hospitality industries should absorb this cost and not charge the customer? Would this not encourage people to use biodegradable products? I see in your last publication that you had a business John Sheekey Packaging that sold eco-friendly products. I didn't know this business existed? I also see that your magazine publishes quite a bit on social media to educate the readers on being eco friendly. This is great to see !!

BOSSY BOSS Dear Editor, I have worked for a company for almost two years now and unfortunately there is no employment contract in place. Recently they have decreased my daily wage without notice. They say the reason for this is that they never agreed to the original amount. I have however been paid this amount since I started working for this company so not sure why the change has been implemented? The other day I had a meeting with my boss to discuss this issue but he has told me that it is not negotiable. I am awfully upset about this decrease. Any advice from your Readers out there on what to do? Disgruntled Employee Port Edward

Fishing Report Darrell Hattingh

W

inter has come and gone and this years sardine run was no fireworks however a few baskets were netted. These silvery fish might still appear in small pockets as late as August. Popular spots have produced Shad and a few Garrick and also some nice Kob at places like Stebel (Umzumbe), Sandspit and “the block” at Sheppie and also Margate Pier. August, September and October are the windy months where fishermen can expect the ‘beasterly easterly’ to blow predominantly. Although off putting and unpleasant, the wind doesn’t affect the fish much and sometimes good catches are made in adverse conditions. There should still be a few Garrick, Kob (and especially large ones) and Shad around and good gully fishing this season. Species such as Bronze Bream, Galjoen and Brusher (Silver Musselcracker) also make an appearance now especially on the Lower South Coast from Margate to Port Edward. These fine fish frequent the white water and in the surf zone off the rocky points. A well presented crab bait and patience can produce a good catch. These fish are strong fighters averaging 5 to 10kg in weight and are exceptionally good eating with a bag limit of 2 per day. Galjoen or Damba which is our national fish are visitors from the Cape and can be fished for with red bait, and often in the same habitat as Bronze Bream and Brusher, however bearing in mind that October is closed season for them. Crayfish season is still open until November 1st. Make sure you have the relevant fishing permits, keep to the bag and size limits and keep the beaches tidy and clean. Tight Lines everyone !! Surfing Report Heather Clark Spring is in the air which means it is getting lighter earlier in the mornings now so those of you who are in school or work office hours will now get to surf in the mornings again which is great news. Winter was a mixed bag this year… We had some really good days of surf with offshore morning winds ... but I must say, a few years back we would have days, even weeks on end when the surf was pumping. A lot of people are saying our seasons are getting later and later .. I personally wouldn’t mind if we had a spring filled with offshore winds and cranking surf as that would be just the best. Spring is known to be a very windy and rainy month, so we should still be in for a lot of South Westerly winds which usually brings the rain. Whatever Spring might bring, we are blessed that God has given us a magnificent ocean to play in. I have been quite busy with lessons this past season for which I am very grateful for, so to any of you reading this article wanting to take on the surf, please get in touch with me and let’s do it!! I just want to wish all our UGU surfers the best of luck in the upcoming SA Champs. Surf hard and and I will be thinking of you all. Remember to keep our beaches and ocean clean. UNTIL SUMMER ….. SURF TILL IT HURTS!! Yours in Surfing Heather Clark

Gag-A-While by Denis The Menace Biker Bar "An old, blind cowboy wanders into an all-girl biker bar by mistake... He finds his way to a bar stool and orders a shot of Jack Daniels. After sitting there for a while, he yells to the bartender, 'Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?' The bar immediately falls absolutely silent. In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says, 'Before you tell that joke, Cowboy, I think it is only fair, given that you are blind, that you should know five things:

My wife just stopped and said, “You weren’t listening, were you?” I thought to myself... “That’s a pretty strange way to start off a conversation.”

1. The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat. 2. The bouncer is a blonde girl with a 'Billy-Club'. 3. I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in karate. 4. The woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weight lifter.

No English dictionary has been able to explain the difference between the two words COMPLETE and FINISHED.

Some People say there is no difference but there is. When you marry the right woman you are 'Now, think about it seriously, Cowboy ... do you still wanna complete. When you marry the tell that blonde joke?' wrong woman you are finished. And if you marry a woman who likes The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head and shopping you are mutters, 'No ... not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times"... COMPLETELY FINISHED!

5. The lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler.

SUDOKU

To advertise in this publication sandy@thepulsekzn.co.za

Here’s How Sudoku Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! (Correct answers on Page 83)
