Nasreen rasool editor & mum of three, with a bubbling affinity for the South Coast

T

he Eskimos, who are more correctly known as the Inuit, are the indigenous people of the northern arctic region, spanning across Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Siberia. The word Inuit means “people”, and those along the arctic coast are the Inupiat, meaning “the real people”. They endure winter temperatures that can drop to -51°C. Scientists are astounded by how the Inuit adapt to these extreme conditions. But what astounds me is that they also seem to adapt quite happily, harbouring no resentment for the land they live in. In every picture I see, they are smiling. They are so connected with their surroundings that they grow up with an ingrained sense of respect and appreciation for their land, the ice, which provides them with everything - homes, food, clothing and highways. They learn to understand the movements of the wind and the ice. They know that the air pockets trapped in snow make it a good insulator, so they build their igloos with it and on the inside, with body heat, the temperature can reach 16°C.

Winter Reading Masters of the cold, the Inuit thrive on highfat, high-protein diets of abundant fish, seabirds, seals and walruses, yet they suffer none of the health ailments associated with Western diets. Vegetation is scarce in the arctic, but they know that by eating frozen raw meat, they can absorb all its nutrients, including Vitamin C. The elders teach them never to tempt the cold with bravado - they know how unforgiving it can be. Yet, they have a deep love for their ecosystem. For the Inuit, the sea ice is central to their livelihood, culture and community. It is their “nuna” their land. Here on the sunny South Coast, we tuck into our cocoons and pray for a moderate winter. I wish for the earthly insight of the Inuit, because as difficult as our winter might be for us, this is our “nuna”.

aving seen the back of some rather nasty weather in April and May it seems the calmer winter months will bring more settled conditions. The South Coast now eagerly awaits the start of “Sardine Fever.” There’s no doubt that this amazing natural migration inspires not just fisherman but the general public as well. The dirty brown inshore water has cleaned up nicely and the water temperatures have dropped down to the low 20’s bringing with it the usual switch to the winter target species. Offshore fishing has improved considerably with some ver y decent yellowfin tuna making an appearance for the winter months. These shoals of tuna are usually caught using the usual chumming / block baiting technique and the average size of these fish is between 15-20kg. The bottom fishing has been decent and there have been decent catches of reds, rock cod and amberjack. There have been some early season geelbek around and fishing for these popular bottom fish will just get better as we move further into winter. Please remember to respect the bag limit of two geelbek per angler. Once again the couta haven’t been as abundant this year mainly due to the disruptive floods earlier. The usual areas off Port Edward, Port Shepstone, Umtentweni,

Fishing

Report

Sea Park and Hibberdene have been slow, mainly also due to the absence of livebait on the usual bait spots. With the more settled sea conditions in June and July it’s still worth trying for a couta as they hang around well into winter. Good news for the rock and surf guys is that the Garrick are around the corner and with the sardines already moving up the coast it seems like this season will be a bumper one for the guys fishing off the side. There will also be some excellent shark fishing along with the shoals of sardines. The winter months usually see the estuary fishing slow down a lot. The water has started to clean up in most of the popular estuaries, which have had a major cleanout with the floods opening up new channels and structure. It’s time to switch over to bait for species like kob and grunter. The shad are around in winter at most bays and points, please remember to respect your bag limits and always carry a valid fishing licence.

owzit to all our awesome beach goers, I am sure everyone enjoyed our lovely Autumn days we had and are ready for what I feel in my bones is going to be yet another cold winter. Our UGU surfers right from our novices, juniors, open and masters have all been gearing up and surfing trials for the upcoming SA Champs. This year UGU surfriders have the pleasure of hosting the Masters SA Champs at our lovely kept beach of St Michaels from 6-9 Aug. It's going to be an epic event with top surfers from all over the country competing for the no 1 spot. The surfing fraternity waits patiently for winter every year. We can expect our cold

morning offshore or South Westerly winds which create smooth, glassy conditions all day long. When surfers talk of “winter surf” we always hope for some bigger days to spice up our lives, dust off our step-up boards (which are usually a few inches longer than our normal boards) and charge some bigger waves. Having said that, it's not always big surf in winter but just really nice waves and clean conditions. Our marine life comes alive and never lets us down, whales and dolphins always come out to play and entertain us. Like I always say, we have the best playground in God's perfect creation. For anyone wanting to learn how to surf and experience the absolute joy of riding a wave, give me a call and we'll get you catching waves in no time :). Keep surfing everyone, and always keep our beaches and ocean clean.

Sports Talk Then there’s the general sense that one must always be optimistic when it comes to the Proteas. Finding that optimism was often difficult in the past, but the excellent IPL campaigns the likes of David Miller, Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram and Kagiso Rabada enjoyed offer hope.

T

he spotlight will once again shine on the Proteas when the T20 World Cup gets underway in Australia in October. Down under is where South Africa were in the last two tournaments as they failed to progress to the semi-finals. Notoriously jittery in global showcases, it’s been 10 years since they reached the final four in the shortest format, while they’re yet to feature in a final. Can they seal the deal this time? For one thing, they’re not among the favourites, so they won’t be weighed down by expectations, which sunk so many previous generations. Secondly, anyone can beat anyone on any given day in T20 cricket, which will count in the Proteas’ favour when they take on the big guns.

With other big names like Tabraiz Shamsi, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi and Rassie van der Dussen sure to be in the mix, there’s no shortage of talent. The key will be to perform as a team instead of having one - off standouts, which has been the case for such a long time. If they can finally find cohesion, they could squeeze into the semi-finals, where anything can happen. happen slowly and methodically. This is the second time it has impacted the chart of South Africa. The first time was in the July riots last year.

“SECOND STAR TO THE RIGHT & STRAIGHT ON ‘TIL MORNING” Peter Pan Hello everyone,

T

he next three months for South Africa

do not bode well. With Mars conjunct

Uranus making an impact to our

Nations Sun and Moon, it presents our country with an opportunity for revolution and change. This will not happen again for another 84 years and so we need to all prepare the best way we can financially or otherwise to get through this Uranus transit. Unfortunately, Uranus is a slow planet and therefore the changes it makes to our lives

Need I say more!

What

happens in astrology is that these planets make three hits to points on a nation's chart or a person's natal chart before moving off. This will be the second time that Uranus wants to cause our nation to go in the opposite direction that it has been going in for a while.

Hopefully, the changes this

transit brings will see the rise of less corruption and more transparency in government and that the new dawn that breaks upon our nation in the coming months and following few years will be a positive one that brings hope to our nation, renewal and further reconciliation. We must all trust and pray our nation through this very critical time.

May God bless us all, as we

navigate through these difficult times?

PDH Properties is a young dynamic Estate Agency, only starting in early 2019. In that short space of time, they have managed to grow the Company and are now firmly established on the KZN South Coast with a tight knit group of dedicated agents who work exceptionally well as a team, helping each other in any way possible. Their team comprises itself of fully qualified agents and those going through their qualification process. Pam de Heer is the Founder and Director, and this year she passed her NQF5 thereby adding Principal to her titles. Their business is very conscious of their “Brand Awareness”. Two of their agents are qualified graphic designers, so consequently their advertising and marketing material is highly professional. One very satisfying part of their growth has been the number of referrals they receive from satisfied clients, proof that they are doing something right! JAMIE OLIVER

Your time spent in the kitchen can enhance your mood and promote your mental well-being. While cooking is clearly a means to satisfy the body’s need for food, it’s increasingly being recognized as a way of nurturing the mind. Spending some time in the kitchen can ease stress and restlessness, and enhance mindfulness. So find your confidence in the kitchen, perhaps grow your own ingredients and start eating fresh wholesome meals. n Cook your pasta in red wine to stain it a beautiful red colour and also infuse it with tons of flavour. n Freeze leftover wine or broth in an ice cube tray. n Extend the life of your banana’s by wrapping the stems. n Add baking soda / vinegar to the water when boiling eggs for easier egg shell removal n Grate cold butter for easier spreading n Get more juice from a lemon by microwaving it on high for around 20 seconds

WINE

KNOW

?

South Africa is home to one of the oldest wine countries outside Europe and the winemaking history began well over 350 years ago. The first vineyard was planted in 1655 by Jan van Riebeeck, the first governor of the Cape and the first recorded vintage was released in 1659. Many grape varietals thrive in South Africa’s fertile soil but Pinotage is the only one unique to South Africa and was developed in 1925 by Abraham Perold, Stellenbosch’s first professor of viticulture. Groot Constantia is the oldest wine estate in South Africa and there are more than 100 000 hectares of vineyards in South Africa.

#WINE FACTS n In South Africa, wineries/vineyards are called wine farms n The most planted wine grape of South Africa is a white one, Chenin Blanc n Grape varieties are called cultivars n South Af rica is the 8th largest wine producing region in the world

FUN FACTS ABOUT ALICE IN WONDERLAND One of the world’s most influential novels was written by Lewis Carroll whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and was published on November 26th 1865. It has been classed as one of the world’s most influential novels. A sequel, Through the Looking-Glass was an equal success. Alice, the heroine is not blonde as illustrated. The original Alice was a brunette. Lewis Carroll suffered from a rare neurological disorder that causes strange hallucinations and affects the size of visual objects, which can make the sufferer feel bigger or smaller than they are – a huge theme of the book. The disease discovered by John Todd in 1955 was later named Alice in Wonderland Syndrome.

Caddies originated in France where french students would carry clubs for golfers to try and earn some extra money. The word itself is derived from the French word “cadet” which is their term for a student.

n Golf was first played in South Africa in 1885 on Waterloo Green, Wynberg – Cape Town. n In 1910, the South African Golf Union was formed. n The highest golf course in the world is the Tactu Golf Club in Morococha, Peru, which sits 14,335 feet above sea level at its lowest point. n Seve Ballesteros has won over 90 international tournaments.

Autosterogram

How to View AutoStereograms An autostereogram is a single-image stereogram (SIS), designed to create the visual illusion of a three-dimensional (3D) scene from a two-dimensional image. The simplest type of autostereogram consists of horizontally repeating patterns (often separate images) and is known as a wallpaper autostereogram and is basically an optical illusion of depth. First you need to unfocus your eyes and look through the autostereogram. The picture becomes blurry and doubled and that is exactly what you want. This will make the patterned tiles overlap with each other and each eye will be seeing a slightly different image. Disparency in views will make your brain see hidden 3D images. Some people who have problems with binocular vision most likely will not be able to see the hidden image. Other vision issues such as nearsightedness and farsightedness will not affect your ability to see autostereograms. The

The beach at St Michaels is a hotspot for watersports and surfers love tackling the waves here. The beach is also great for paddling boats and it is a safe swimming beach for all beach goers with shark nets and lifeguards. Snorkelling and scuba diving are popular here thanks to the massive variety of marine plants and animals that are living just below the water’s surface.

dolphin facts Dolphins are mammals known for their friendliness and there are over 40 species of dolphins with the most common being the Bottlenose dolphin. It is the nature of the dolphins to stick with their mothers for a long time before they leave their pack. Some stay with their mothers for 3 or even 8 years. Dolphins also have 2 stomachs – one is used for storage of food and the other is

used for digestion. It has been proved by scientists that dolphins give themselves names. They also develop their own individual whistles and they recognize theirs and other dolphins’ names. Killer Whales belong to the dolphin family and reach up to a length of 30 feet. Although dolphins have teeth, they swallow food without chewing it. Dolphins’ hearing system is so sophiscated and advanced that even a blind individual can survive and although dolphins have no sense of smell and no good sense of taste they use their noses to kill sharks.

Each number can appear only once in each row column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

gag-a-while pirate humour

YOU’RE ONLY GIVEN ONE LITTLE SPARK OF MADNESS, YOU MUSTN’T LOSE IT!

A pirate walked into a bar and the bartender said: “Hey, I haven't seen you in a while. What happened? You look terrible”. “What do you mean?” said the pirate. “I feel fine.” Bartender: “What about the wooden leg? You didn't have that before” Pirate: “Well, we were in a battle and I got hit with a cannon ball, but I am fine now”. Bartender: “Well okay, but what about the hook? What happened to your hand?” Pirate: “We were in another battle. I boarded a ship and got into a sword fight. My hand was cut off. I got fitted with a hook.” Bartender: “What about the eye patch?” Pirate: “Oh, one day we were at sea and a flock of birds flew over. I looked up and one of them shat in my eye” Bartender: “You're kidding, you lost an eye just from bird shit?” Pirate: “It was my first day with the hook”

TOP DRIVING SAFETY TIPS When you’re behind the wheel of a car - whether alone or with passengers – driving safely should always be your top concern. We’re more distracted than ever, so it is crucial to adhere to some basics of safe driving and practice them every time you’re on the road. n Always keep 100 % of your attention on your driving at all times – no multi-tasking and using electronic devices while driving. n Slow down. Speeding gives you less time to react and increases the severity of an accident. n Always beware of what other drivers around you are doing and expect the unexpected. n Adjust your seat, mirrors and climate controls before putting the car into gear.
