COVER FEATURE This Summer 2021 we have Anke van der Linden on our cover who not only is a local KZN South Coast resident but a Jewellery Designer and Business Owner as well. This photo was taken by Lelanie Van Der Walt from LANIE4tography at the Red Desert which is the world’s smallest desert. The Red Desert is Port Edward’s best kept secret and lies some 3km’s west of the town and is only 200m in diameter and 11-hectares in its entirety. Best described as a miniature version of the Arizona Desert, the naked red soil bare stark contrast to the surrounding lush and tropical vegetation. Archeological artefacts going back millions of years can be found and the locals are pleased this is now an internationally protected heritage site.

HOW TO GET TO THE RED DESERT Please view their webpage and also purchase your entrance tickets online www.reddesertnaturereserve.co.za via the Quicket link or call the Reserve Manager on 083 631 9331. Entrance to the reserve is entirely at your own risk. Please do not move/remove any plants, rocks or sand material. Do not make any fires. No dogs are allowed and no litter please.

Editor’s Note Summer EDITION 2021

I

’m not the only one who remembers exactly where she was when all this COVID chaos and lockdown “loopiness” began, but while there have been many hardships out there for all of us, there have also been silver linings. Many of us have learned new things, about ourselves and each other, and some of us were reminded how lucky we are just to be embracing life and staying afloat in our businesses.

mer always brings with it a sense of fun. Maybe it’s spending time with friends and family and exploring new places. Perhaps it’s meeting interesting people or trying exciting new activities or just enjoying those lazy lunches in beautiful surroundings on our coastline or soaking up the sunshine on one of our gorgeous sandy beaches. We are truly blessed with sensational summers aren’t we?

In this edition I celebrate my fourth year ownership of this delightful local KZN Magazine and I truly appreciate and value those advertisers who have continued to support me. Advertising is the only way most publications survive and I think once you turn the page, you’ll agree it’s a pretty invaluable product. Due to the recent KZN civil unrest and the various lockdowns we had this year we sadly had to see the cancellation of the Spring 2021 issue.

This Christmas season may your gifts be many, and your returns be few. May your holiday season sparkle and shine and may we all collectively after a challenging year find inspiration and hope in these wise words “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment” - Buddha

Summer however has arrived and the heat has abruptly pushed away the cosy winter days and cut short the spring bloom. Sum-

Nasreen Rasool Writer, editor & mum of three, with a bubbling affinity for the South Coast

A

few years ago I read a book called “The Book Of Summer”. It was about a lady who lives in a house by the sea, but the land in front of the house is eroding so she has to move. She can’t bear the thought of leaving, and stays as long as she can. She finds an old book where guests who stayed at the house during the summer would write down their memories and thank you notes. It reminded me of our little slice of paradise here in the South Coast and how we hold onto the things that keep us unique and make us who we are as a community. Not many of us would give this up, even if someone paid us a million bucks!

Summer in South Africa coincides with the festive season, and it’s a time for family bonding, connecting with friends, and enjoying some much needed time away from work. I’ve personally realised how important slow, mindful living is for wellbeing and mental health. It’s easy to become wound up by stresses of the day, meeting deadlines and rushing to complete task after task. But when you slow down, try to be present in

Summer Reading each moment, take a walk outside, light a candle, and steal a few minutes of each day to do something that brings you peace and joy, you’ll feel so much lighter. The summer of 2021 also marks one year that I’ve been working for myself after being retrenched due to Covid-19, and I’m lovin’ it! I want to say to anyone else who’s lost their job in the past year due to the pandemic and has struggled to find employment - believe in yourself. It’s possible to turn your own amazing skills and talents into an income stream. Be confident in your abilities and put yourself out there. You can do it! Happy summer South Coasters, remember to wear your masks while you soak up the summer sun and feel the sand between your toes.

Letters

to the editor

If you’d like to contribute; we would love to hear from you! BAN THE CIRCUS Dear Editor, Our community should not condone cruelty to animals by allowing performing animal acts. While circuses and travelling shows featuring wild animals may seem innocent enough, it has become apparent over the past decade that wild animal acts are inherently cruel. Hundreds of jurisdictions around the world including entire countries have recognized this and have prohibited wild animal acts so why honestly do we allow them onto our KZN South Coast? What concerned me even more recently was how some of these local shows were ‘SOLD OUT’. C’mon South Coast people why are you supporting these heinous acts of cruelty? THE LION KING, Leisure Bay

KZN UNREST Dear Editor, To the small group who sought to bring our country to its knees a few months back .. they truly did, but most certainly not in the way that was expected. The whole country went down on their knees in prayer. These antagonists broke down many shopping malls and demolished businesses, but in doing so they also broke down the walls which divided our nation. Our South Coast communities stood together too, united as one, and protected our small suburbs with courage. May we all take the time to never forget what SAPS, security companies, local CPF’s and individuals did when they were called upon during these turbulent times. BRAVEHEART, Southport Thanks for the letters and keep up the correspondence. You are welcome to respond to any of the above using their “anon” name. Autosterogram

How to View AutoStereograms An autostereogram is a single-image stereogram (SIS), designed to create the visual illusion of a three-dimensional (3D) scene from a two-dimensional image. The simplest type of autostereogram consists of horizontally repeating patterns (often separate images) and is known as a wallpaper autostereogram and is basically an optical illusion of depth. First you need to unfocus your eyes and look through the autostereogram. The picture becomes blurry and doubled and that is exactly what you want. This will make the patterned tiles overlap with each other and each eye will be seeing a slightly different image. Disparency in views will make your brain see hidden 3D images. Some people who have problems with binocular vision most likely will not be able to see the hidden image. Other vision issues such as nearsightedness and farsightedness will not affect your ability to see autostereograms.

Fishing Report

Tournaments Officer, Shelly beach Ski Boat Club

W

ith the windy Spring months behind us and the summer weather arriving, it’s time to get ready for warm water and the summer gamefish season on the KZN South Coast. The summer fishing season is very popular with anglers as it ties in with the December holidays and brings with it some great angling opportunities. Offshore fishing at this time of year is focused very much on dorado which arrive from the end of November with the warmer water from up north and staying pretty much through to the start of autumn. These popular gamefish are regularly caught on lures, live bait and dead baits along the KZN coast and occasionally taken from deep water points and piers by shore anglers. These shoals of dorado offer great sport angling with boat anglers and charter operators targeting these fish almost exclusively during the summer months. There are usually shoals of yellowfin tuna around mainly on the deeper reefs such as Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks but they also make an appearance on the colour lines that form off major river mouths where dirty river water meets the warm ocean water. These colour lines are a sure bet for dorado but also attract a variety of ocean life including turtles, sea birds and dolphins. Another popular species that is targeted during

the summer months is the Cape Yellowtail, a hard fighting gamefish found on deeper pinnacles and reefs and usually caught on live bait and vertical jig. These strong fish give anglers a run for their money and sturdy tackle and good technique are required to tame these strong fish. Bottom fishing remains decent on days when the current allows and catches of reds, rock cod and amberjack can be expected. Please take note of the various Marine Protected Area regulations pertaining to permitted bottom fishing zones as well as bag limits on the various species. For the rock and surf guys the inshore waters are often very dirty with the summer rains making fishing a bit slower. There are still some kob around and the shad season re-opens on the 1st December. Anglers are reminded to stick to the bag limits. Most of the rivers are very busy with recreational boating and skiing so concentrate on river mouths on incoming tides as well as the upper reaches of the rivers. Stay safe and enjoy the excellent summer fishing on the South Coast!

days of messy surf conditions along with our lovely summer rains. But as for us surfers, we love the ocean and none of the above worries us, if there is a wave to surf we will be out there having fun and making the best of it. Fortunately, there are plenty other activities on our beautiful coastline to keep us busy should the surf be really bad.

A

fter a chilly winter and very windy spring, I am sure everyone has been longing for our lovely hot summer days to relax and chill on the beach and soak up some sun. As always I enjoy being able to getup early and be in the water by 5am for an early morning surf to start off the day and it’s great for all the surfers with full time jobs to be able to surf before and after work too. The joys of summer. This time of year we can expect those dreaded easterly winds that cause many

I am always available for surf lessons for anyone who wants to give it a go. It is super fun whether you come on your own or in a group, once that bug has bitten you, you won’t want to stop. If you are keen to put your surfing skills to the test, you can give me a call on 082 437 7839. Enjoy the summer, keep our beaches clean and remember to use sunblock. See you in the surf ..

Sports Talk of where in the world he found himself at the time. The South Coast has never been the same since that tragic day, but it’s become a day on which many locals - along with thousands around the world - honour the legacy of a true champion on and off the bike by way of memorial rides.

t

he South Coast is in full bloom with beaches buzzing with activity. Summer is also a time in which locals remember the region’s favourite son, the late great Burry Stander. South Africa’s greatest ever mountain biker, his fifth-place finish in the cross-country race at the London Games in 2012 is still fresh in my memory.

As far as hidden gems go, none are more special than the Burry Stander Bike Park in Umtentweni, where cyclists and walkers can traverse the very trails on which a young Burry honed his skills. For more information, visit the park’s Facebook page or contact Burry’s mother Mandie at 0794937499.

It was on January 3, 2013, that the universally beloved two-time Olympian lost his life at the age of 25 during a routine training ride due to a taxi making an illegal turn in Shelly Beach.

hat a crock! What holiday destination wants to be tagged: ‘A hidden gem’?

Our patch of paradise – Blue Flag beaches, award winning golf courses, the fantastic Oribi Gorge and so much more – has been a popular destination for… ever since this writer can remember. We were never ‘hidden’. Then some idiot moved the airport from Toti. Umhlanga and the North Coast became Sandton-by-the-sea and, all of a sardine, we were back to being… ‘a hidden gem’! Well, that could all be set to change. For starters, next year Margate will host Rage which promises to be a huge financial boost. Don’t think: ‘Matric year-end parties of old’,when drunken teens thought it was

Show flush young adults a good time, they will get married, have babies (hopefully not too soon after Rage) and will be back asfamilies… like the good old days. Back to golf. What better place to organise a tour to? One such group member tells the story of how he nearly missed the bus home from Sheppy recently. He popped into the loo for a last drop, rushed outside to an idling mini-bus and jumped in. Only then did he realise he was sitting next to two rather startled young kids. Their angry father in the driver’s seat turned around and shouted: “Who the hell are you?” The golfer apologised profusely and hightailed it to a similar minibus parked further down. elcome to an interesting few months! On 4 December we have a Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius. This is a time of restless energy and the need for personal independence. Time for adventure, not responsibility and work. Grab opportunities to go exploring. The Full Moon on the 19th in Gemini coincides with Venus going retrograde. Gemini rules our minds, information and our thought processes. This is an appropriate Moon to reclaim our mental space. Gemini rules gathering of knowledge, and you should consider furthering your studies in whatever field inspires you.

January is a month to watch out for. The New Moon on the 2nd in Capricorn brings a serious, businesslike energy, so sort out matters before Mercury stations retrograde on the 14th. Mercury Retrograde tends to play havoc with all communications, so now is not a good time to sign contracts, move house or change jobs. This continues until the 4th of February, and will affect Capricorns and Aquarians. The Full Moon on the 17th of January in Cancer is a sensitive time. On the 29th Venus stations direct, and your romantic life and everyday cash flow should begin to improve. February brings relief. The Full Moon is in Leo and no planets are retrograde anymore. This is your time to shine. Exhibitions, gallery openings, theatre and any other public events are well aspected now, and we can all stop holding our breaths! A New Moon in Pisces on 2nd of March brings a dreamy atmosphere. This is a great time to spend around water, getting in touch with your intuition and giving gratitude.

s South Africans we delight in expressing our lekker local culture … although sometimes it can be difficult for others to understand just what we’re saying. Even though many South Africans speak English, that does not mean you will always understand them. Sudoku

Here’s How Sudoku Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each - row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Did you know?  Even at rest, muscle is three times more efficient at burning calories than fat and exercise prevents signs of ageing too.  Exercise makes you feel more energized because it releases endorphins into the blood Which increases your productivity.  Regular exercise, weight training and physical activity will increase bone density and muscle strength and help with flexibility too.

“PAIN IS TEMPORARY. QUITTING LASTS FOREVER” LANCE ARMSTRONG

 People who don’t exercise regularly can lose 80 % of their strength by age 65. Muscle loss due to aging is known as sarcopenia and naturally starts happening once you pass age 30.

If you knew that a certain type of exercise could benefit your heart, improve balance, strengthen bones and muscle, and help you lose or maintain weight, wouldn’t you want to get started? Every workout plan should include strength training, and bigger muscles are just one of the health benefits you will reap. A FAMILY TRADITION

F

ifi’s Fresh Fish has been a landmark in Hibberdene since 1965 and today is an iconic fast food outlet in Hibberdene on the KZN South Coast. Anthony & Jenni Defilippi purchased Fifi’s in 1995. Anthony the keen, commercial fisherman caught all the fresh fish for the outlet that was run by Jenni. Today their son David continues in his Fathers legacy while daughter Roxy is running the Hibberdene branch alongside Jenni and her Son in Law Gavin who continues the Fifi’s brand with a brand in Port Shepstone. “I have always looked up to my mother for how hard she worked to put Fifi’s on the map and also to my late father for working the many long hours out at sea to provide the fresh fish for the shop. Their kindness and the way they were always willing to help others as well was and is still so inspiring” – Roxy Nadauld Fifi’s Fresh Fish offers a variety of quality fresh fish, diverse menu and frozen seafood with take-away options including catch of the day (seasonal) to prepare at home or choose a take-away to enjoy on the run. Fresh from the sea – wholesale & retail prices with quality game fish options which are subject to availability as well as frozen options. Southport Beach is largely secluded, with areas shaded by massive milkwood trees. The beach offers free parking facilities. The rock pools and the tidal pool are perfect for little ones to explore in and the swimming is great almost all year round. Keep an eye open for the whales that can be seen passing this beach which is massively impressive.

The beach at St Michaels is a hotspot for watersports and surfers love tackling the waves here. The beach is also great for paddling boats and it is a safe swimming beach for all beach goers with shark nets and lifeguards. Snorkelling and scuba diving are popular here thanks to the massive variety of marine plants and animals that are living just below the water’s surface.

All About

Sharks

South Africa’s waters have over 100 species of shark and they all have different diets depending on their shape and size. Smaller sharks tend to be bottom feeders. Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world and they are no relation to whales. They eat the smallest of creatures such as plankton, krill, fish eggs and small fish. They can grow up to 12 metres but can reach up to 18. Tiger sharks have distinctive grey vertical stripes or spots covering the side of their bodies and they eat just about anything including seabirds, turtles, smaller sharks and marine mammals. Sharks do not have bones but they still can fossilize and as they age calcium salts are deposited in their skeletal cartilage to strengthen it. Most sharks have good eyesight and have fantastic night vision and they can also see colours.

Let’s talk THE FIRST CAR: In 1885, German inventor and engineer Karl Benz, who co-founded Mercedes-Benz, built the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, which was powered by an internal combustion engine and is considered to be the world’s first production car. CRUISE CONTROL INVENTOR WAS BLIND: Mechanical Engineer Ralph Teetor, who lost his eyesight at the age of 5, invented cruise control in 1948, inspired to do so by his lawyer. Teetor designed a device that used magnets and springs to control the speed of an automobile.

Money was first introduced into South Africa in 1782 by the Dutch Governor of the Cape of Good Hope, Baron Joachim Van Plettenberg. The South African Reserve Bank is the oldest central bank in Africa having opened in June 1921. The first banknotes were issued by the Reserve Bank to the public on the 19th April 1922 and in 1961, South Africa changed its currency from pound sterling to rand and cents. In 1962 a banknote factory was established in South Africa, and the same factory continues to cater for the requirements of the South African Reserve Bank today.
