BAN FIREWORKS
DearEditor
Fireworks need to be banned. Not only are theydangerousbuttheyalsocausetrauma on wildlife, domestic animals and the elderly too. There's clearly not enough law enforcement to confront these people who light these off and most people have no respect for neighbours as the South Coast wasa“warzone”withallthebangsthispast festiveseason.Assomeonewhocaresabout animals and the environment, I think an ordinance to tackle excessive fireworks usagecan'tcomesoonenough.Itpainsme to think of the dogs who injure themselves, breaking tethers and climbing fences as theytrytoescapetheblastsandtheanimals whobecomelost Stopfireworks!

There is something so freeing about summer. We let go, let loose, let our hair down and release all the tension from months behind us. Summer holidays at the beach are the best, of course, but even long after the holidays those feel-good vibes stay withus.
My favourite part is the summer fruit Endless explosions of sweet, juicy exotic fruits in all kinds of unique colours, tastes and textures. Summer desserts and snacks are litchis, sweet melon, watermelon, mangoes, spanspek, peaches, nectarines, kiwi fruit, and the list goes on! After what has felt like hell for the past threeyearsisgoingtostarteasingoffin 2023. This is quite simply because a lot of planets will be changing signs and therefore the collective energy will change. The change is going to come with some unexpected surprises for South Africa. Simply because we've come to expect the same old, same old But with Uranus currently sitting firmly on our nations moon whichrepresentshowwefeel, ouremotions and our collective karma, we can expect the unexpectedwithheightenedemotion.
InJanuary, westarttheNewYearfeelingthe pinch with our reserve banks continuing to tightenourbelts. However,by8thMarch,we should see a reprieve from the banks as Saturn which has kept us in literal bondage to debt and fear since she made an ingress into Aquarius in our nations 8th House in December 2020, finally departs into Pisces and the 9th house. The 9th house is the house of faith and hope. This is good news as the heaviness of the past three years begins to lift. Every time a planet changes signs and houses, we will immediately feel a shiftandachange. Goodnewsindeedforall ofus!
Not only that but Jupiter and Chiron are making their way through our nation's
house of government in the sign of Aries. This while Aries ruler Mars conjuncts Venus in our Nations house of dark secrets. I see this as finally a lot of truth coming out and big changes been made during the month of March onwards as Mars the fighter, decides its time for final truth serum to be taken. Jupiter conjuncting Chiron means thatOldZeus, thebenevolentoneistryingto bring great healing to our nation at governmentlevels.

A short trip back in time
Port Shepstone was ‘founded’ in 1867, mainly because of valuable marble depositsfoundneartheUmzimkuluRiver mouth and is named after Sir Theophilus Shepstonewhowasoneofthearea’smost prominentcitizens.
Two brothers, James and David Aiken, who had established the first lime works petitioned the Natal Government for a harbour. The powers-that-be didn’t play ball at first, so the brothers called in the help of William Bazley who was paid to blastawaytherocksthatblockedtheriver mouth. He was one of the world’s leading underwater blast experts of the day. Bazley’s curved Harbour Wall was started in1880,butunfortunatelytheriverwastoo shallow and the curve too dangerous for the ships. In 1890, work was stopped on thewallandW.Barnes-Kinsey,aqualified engineer, was then appointed to construct a straighter wall using precast and dated concrete blocks. Port Shepstone became a full fiscal port in 1893.
In 1880 the Somtseu was the first ship to navigate the river, but not without
incident.Itsmashedupagainstrocksand wasoutofaction foraboutamonthwhile William Bazley repaired it. But it was a start and ships were soon ferrying goods toandfromDurban.Surprisingly, noships were wrecked in the treacherous conditions.
After floods had damaged the wall, with the final advent of the much anticipated railwaylinein1901andwithroadtransport also possible (travel time to Durban was reduced to five hours), the harbour activities ceased. Hence, the life of Port ShepstoneHarbourwasshortlived.
Fortunately, the iconic cast-iron lighthouse of 27,000 candle strength still stands “guard” at the mouth of the Umzimkulu River today. The Port Shepstone Lighthouse was retired of its dutyin1905.
British adventurers, Norwegian settlers, Indian entrepreneurs and many sugar plantation labourers then began to settle intheregionwhichboostedtheeconomy. Sugar was introduced to the Port Shepstone region in 1868 and the first sugarmillwasstarted.

The Umzimkulu River is one of the widest riversinKZNandinthe1890’ssugarcane, coffee and tea were all grown on the banks.Tothisdaythe fishing stillremains good and at the river mouth lies the famous ‘sandspit’ where huge kob are taken with garrick, rock salmon and shad caught from the old harbour wall. Batstone’s Drift was the regular crossing point of the Umzimkulu River and is still the site of a low-level bridge a few km’s upstream from Spiller’s Wharf today. The newN2roadcrossestheriveratthispoint. Batstone’s Drift was named after Thomas Batstonewhowasalocalshopkeeper.
Artifacts of the Khoi & San people have been found too in the area with historical evidence of Bushmen that lived in the caves high above the Umzimkulwana River, leaving their art as a silent testimony of their passing. Visitors to the area can investigate more of this fascinating history at the new Port Shepstone Museum which is situated on thePortShepstonebeachfrontwhichhas a number of exhibits. Well known and passionate historian and founder of the Port Shepstone Museum is retired 94year-old Mary Neethling who has contributed an enormous amount of documented and fascinating historical events of the area which one can find at thislocalmuseum.
It is a bold statement, but there are probably few guesthouses with
captivating history and intriguing characters as does the historic Royston Hall in Umtentweni which is situated about3km’supstreamfromthemouthof the Umzimkulu River. Captain Hitchens commissionedthehousetobebuilt, circa 1899 – 1902, for his wife as a weekend beach cottage. She rejected it outright becauseofitbeing‘notevenonthebeach’ and returned to Durban in a huff. Later it was occupied by many other interesting characters. After Brig. Genl J.R Royston and his wife passed away the estate intermittently lay derelict over the next century, but now the mansion has been lovingly restored to her former glory by the current owners, Roderick and Ria Hackland.
Another snippet of history will be encountered by walkers negotiating the historic road via one of the two modern railwaytunnelsalongsidetheUmzimkulu River. The old ‘River Road’ has been partly restored as a scenic, interesting, well laid out and fairly challenging at times walking trail thanks to the efforts of the Umtentweni Conservancy Members. From the Port Shepstone Country Club, walkers follow the railway line through two tunnels to Royston Hall. The Tandele 10kmTrailasitiscalledtodayisavaluable asset to the South Coast area. WATER&POWERBEGINNINGS
In 1930 a water scheme was instituted, drawing water by pipeline from above St Helen’s Rocks (named after Helen Crutchfield who was the leader of a gun running group who operated into the Transkei in the 19th century). In the same year an electricity scheme was also started even though only three residents actually undertook to install electricity. The power station was built beside the Umzimkulu River on the site of Spiller’s Wharf and was operational until Eskom tookover.Massivefoundationstoholdthe heavy power plants (which were engines salvaged from two WW11 submarines)
and large water pipes for cooling are still to be found at the building today. Spillers Waterfront (the old Spillers Frozen Foods &FishFactory)nowoccupytheoldpower station premises and is a historical local leisure landmark that retains elements of boththeindustrialandharbourpast.
THEFLOODSOF1959
There is a long history of floods that delayed the growth and development of Port Shepstone with major floods that gripped the area in 1959. During the month of May, the Umzimkulu River rose by 16 metres and these floods washed away many homes. The combined road and railway bridge, constructed in 1907, was also washed away as well as the Batstone’sDriftlowlevelbridgerendering the lower South Coast almost completely cut off from the rest of the province. Fortunatelyanewlyconstructedbridgeat the mouth of the Umzimkulu River was nearing completion. These floods also ravagedthePortShepstoneCountryClub as well and to this day an annual Restoration Cup competition commemorates this event as close as possible to the 18thofMayeachyear,the‘date’ofthedevastation. The current 18-hole, par-72 parklands-type course was designed by Sid Brews, although the first nine holes weredesignedandconstructedin1912.Mr Neil McKenzie, the first President and Founder of the Club, passed away in March 1938. Mr Gilson was appointed first Magistrate in1889.
Port Shepstone was declared “a full fiscal port’ in 1893, and after Durban officially became the region’s second harbour.
Eventually, though, the ongoing wreckages and arrival of the railway, was to see the gradual closure of the harbour and the start of the real Port Shepstone boom. When the railroad arrived in Port Shepstone in 1901, the travel time to Durbanwasreducedtofivehours, andthe townbecamefarlessisolated.Therailway connection promoted increased immigration for other settlers, and the Norwegians were soon outnumbered by GermanandBritishsettlers.

Ships & She’s
A ship is called a she because there is usually a gang of men about. She has a waist and stays.
It takes a lot of paint to keep her good looking.
It is not the initial expense that breaks you. It is the upkeep.
It takes an experienced man to handle her correctly, and without a man at the helm, she is absolutely uncontrollable. She shows her topsides, hides her bottom and, when coming into port, she always heads for the buoys.
