Editor’s Note WINTER EDITION 2021

W

elcome to all our winter holiday makers and locals alike. The snuggle is real this winter season as the nippy cold weather moves in. This is truly a wonderful time of year for all of us and I wish you an exciting and fun filled winter exploring our many tourist attractions together with our beautiful weather and beaches. Holidaymakers please be vigilant on your stay. A safe guest is always a happy guest. Despite the crime and the many infrastructure negatives on our coastline exciting opportunities still await the innovative mind in our coastal region and the investment potential is endless. Thank you to those loyal advertisers who have continued to support this publication. I am truly proud as your Editor to be representing each and every one of you as each establishment plays a vital role in the success of our coastline.

No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn. For some of you the winter days are spent with heated blankets and soft throws while the rest of us scurry through the dark days, making our way from one beacon of light to the next, awaiting the return of the sun and light and the warmth. My challenge to you this winter is to find joy in every day. With so many of us having lost loved ones recently due to COVID and other diseases, make up your mind today that no matter what comes your way, no matter how difficult or unfair, you will do more than simply survive. You will thrive in spite of it. Attitudes are contagious, so wake up each and every morning realising that you are blessed to be living for another day in your life.

Love, Light & Gratitude

s nature kicks off her layers, we pile them on! Hello South Coasters, and may I say BRRRRR - the cold is officially here! The strength and resilience of Mother Nature is evident during winter, but when a tree recently fell down in my yard during a windy night, it was a reminder that beneath those tough natural sinews, there is also vulnerability. Another natural wonder is the whale migration that takes place along the South African coast between June and November, as whales swim to Mozambique and Angola for their breeding season. They are seen in the Western Cape, and sometimes along the south coast of KZN, so keep an eye out for these majestic creatures at our numerous whale decks.

South African dinner tables come alive in winter with hearty dishes to enjoy such as lamb potjie, bobotie, bunny chow and rooibos tea. As you cosy up, remember to boost your immune system and keep your pets snuggly and warm too. The South Coast is a treasure cove of charity organisations that donate blankets and food to the poor and animal shelters. If you are able to support them, this is a lovely way to help those in need. I’ve never liked winter, but world events such as India’s third wave, and the Israel-Palestine humanitarian crisis, have taught me the importance of gratitude in the face of adversity. This season, there will be no complaining from me and I hope you will join me in adopting a positive attitude. Armed with appreciation, compassion, and resilience, it’s safe to say: We’re ready for you, winter. Bring it on!

ANOTHER HAPPY CHAPPY

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

In reference to your letter written about the book review of Michelle Obama in your Summer Edition 2020. Oh wow what a book to read and thanks for the recommendation. Michelle Obama is truly a humble and inspiring human being and this novel did give me a window’s view into the life of a formidable attorney, mother, wife and yes also the First Lady. What a beautifully written book.

I refer to your Happy Chappy letter in your current Autumn Edition 2021 and yes I totally agree on the great cartoons that Lencel puts together. I also love your puzzles, great humour and comical images with memes.

Reading good novels most definitely increases your vocabulary and imagination power and also improves ones memory. When you see today on Facebook all the bad grammar, spelling errors and dreadful text that some people put together, it just shows you that there are many people out there who have “forgotten how to read” as reading books most certainly improves ones language skill. Thanks for a great fun magazine. I have had the pleasure of following this publication for a number of years and I have seen big improvements on every issue that you publish. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each - row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Fishing Report

Tournaments Officer, Shelly beach Ski Boat Club

W

ith the arrival of the calmer winter months on the South Coast comes “Sardine Fever.” There’s no doubt that this amazing natural migration inspires not just fisherman but the general public as well. The sea has cleaned up nicely and the warm summer water temperatures have dropped down to the low 20’s bringing with it the usual switch to the winter target species. Offshore fishing has improved considerably with some very decent yellowfin tuna making an appearance for the winter months. These shoals of tuna are usually caught using the usual chumming / block baiting technique and the average size of these fish is between 15-20kg. Recently some very decent tuna have been caught on lure in the deep, with fish of 44kg and 76kg caught out of Shelly Beach. The bottom fishing has been decent and on days when the current has allowed there have been decent catches of reds, rock cod and amberjack. There have been some early season geelbek around and fishing for these popular bottom fish will just get better as we move further into winter. Strangely the couta haven’t been as abundant this year as in the past 5 years. With the more settled sea condi-

tions and live bait around it’s always worth trying for a couta. Good news for the rock and surf guys is that the Garrick are here in full force this year and with the sardines already coming out along most of the South Coast it seems like this season will be a bumper one for the guys fishing off the side. There has been some excellent shark fishing along with the shoals of sardines. The winter months usually see the estuary fishing slow down a lot. The water has started to clean up in most of the popular estuaries and it’s time to switch over to bait for species like kob and grunter. As winter settles the kob will start feeding more aggressively and then anglers can start to have some fun throwing paddletails and rapalas for these popular fish. The shad are around at most bays and points, please remember to respect your bag limits and always carry a valid fishing licence. Tight lines and enjoy the stunning winter weather conditions on the South Coast!

Surfing

Report

doesn’t mean just big surf though, but just amazing conditions in all size waves. We have started seeing more whales and dolphins around lately and also the arrival of the sardines brought great excitement to the South Coast beaches.

A

nother winter is upon us and it seems like it is going to be a cold one with epic winter surf so get out your bigger boards as you’ll be needing them. Towards the end of Autumn we were already experiencing some good, sizeable surf, that at times had the good ól adrenaline pumping. But each year this is what we surfers wait for … those cold offshore winds that blow down the river at St Mikes, giving us glassy waves to surf and with the South West pushing in the swell we really don’t have much to complain about. Winter

Guaranteed if there are sardines around, the surf will always be cooking but chances are you won’t see many of us out there surfing! The South African surfing champs and the Ballito Pro as well as the South African Masters Surfing Champs in Vic Bay have been postponed until later in the year. Surf hard this season and stay safe and please keep our beaches clean.

SportsTalk It’ll come as a major disappointment if the Blitzboks don’t return with a medal of some sort in the rugby sevens tournament. The perennial World Series winners bagged bronze when the sport debuted at the games in 2016 and they have the pedigree to strike gold this year.

R

ather late than never. At the time of writing, the Tokyo Olympic Games was a go for July 23 to August 8 after being postponed last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s set to be one of the most bizarre editions in the 125-year history of the modern games, but at this stage, athletes and fans alike will take what they can get. Team South Africa will test their mettle once again, with SASCOC in February telling Parliament it’s targeting a record 13 medals. That’s an ambitious goal, to be kind, given our best-ever haul was 10 in Rio five years ago. Nevertheless, the Olympics is a time for optimism and South Africa does have some medal hopefuls.

The men’s 4x100m team appear to be on the fast track to Olympic success with the quartet of Thando Dlodlo, Gift Leotlela, Clarence Munyai and Akani Simbine having won the World Athletics Relays in Poland in May, while long jumper Zarck Visser should also be in contention. Tatjana Schoenmaker is set to make a big splash in the pool, where Chad le Clos could add to his medal tally, while surfer Jordy Smith could make some serious waves as well. umour has it that Tweni Beach is vying for Blue Flag status which will add to a host of others along our beautiful coastline. Without giving anything away, all sorts of plans are in place by a hard-working, gung-ho band of residents. They are oh so proud of their suburb and beachfront. Rightfully so. Woe betides the person whose dog is caught dropping a doodoo while going walkies. Rabid residents will soon name and shame you on any number of WhatsApp groups and even Facebook. The beachfront and surrounds are kept clean… or cleaned up quickly after one of THOSE boozy parties that seem to plague

Apparently, a tender is also going out shortly for someone to take over the beach kiosk. The above group is insisting that whoever gets the nod has to keep regular hours and spruce it up. This could just become a popular spot for cappuccinos and muffins while looking for whales. We’re talking leviathans of the sea, of course. That’s for the benefit of one friendly resident who approached a few foreigners who were sun bathing recently. Detecting an accent, the chap asked: “Are you ladies from Scotland?” “No… Wales.” “Oh, sorry. Are you whales from Scotland?” Needless to say, the conversation was cut short. Mercury retrograding on 18 October adds communication glitches to the mix. My advice is to prepare for this awkward time by writing down goals, commitments, and dreams and defining boundaries. The good news is that Venus, the planet ruling romance as well as cash flow, and Mars, the planet of war, are both direct and behaving, which brings some relief. The New Moon on 8th August is in Leo, and the Full Moon on 22nd is in Aquarius. 7th September’s New Moon is in Virgo and the Full Moon is in Pisces on the 20th. October brings some respite from the retrogrades, with Pluto direct on 6th October, followed by Saturn on the 11th and Jupiter on the 18th, but that is the same day Mercury makes everything topsy turvey. Hold onto your hats, folks, we’re in for quite a ride. Contact Fey Fand direct for your personal forecast.

““Laughter is timeless. Imagination has no age. And dreams are forever”” walt disney

A FEW “BARE NECESSITIES” ABOUT the

Jungle Book

This 1967 animated classic was released in theatres across the USA more than 50 years ago. Rudyard Kipling’s classic work of literature, The Jungle Book inspired the Disney Film which was the last movie Walt Disney himself worked on as he died on December 15 1966. The financial success of the movie became the fourth highest grosser of the year. The most important life lesson in JUNGLE BOOK is to not be a coward. We need to face our fears, gain confidence, and triumph over it. This is shown beautifully when Mowgli faces the Tiger – Shere Khan and saves his friend Baloo. Jungle Book also tells us how to lead a simple and happy life. There are many other life lessons portrayed in this novel written by Rudyard Kipling who was born in India and spent his early years of his childhood during the British Raj era and these Jungle Book stories were based in Central India.

“And don’t spend your time lookin’ around... For something you want that can’t be found... When you find out you can live without it... And go along not thinkin’ about it... I’ll tell you something true... The bare necessities of life will come to you” JUNGLE BOOK – LYRICS

Cooking for Fun

“Real food doesn’t HAVE ingredients. Real food IS ingredients.” jamie oliver

Cooking can be therapeutic and some therapists recommend cooking classes as a way to treat depression and anxiety as well as eating disorders, ADHD and various addictions. Whether you are a hesitant beginner or a professional step up your cooking game, read recipes before you start, invest in a good sharp knife, season and taste as you go and be flexible. If you fail at a meal it means you’re one step closer to becoming a better cook. You can never be a good cook without some serious flops!

Autosterogram

How to View AutoStereograms At first look stereogram is similar to nothing more but a tiled pattern, however, with a proper look you can discover amazing 3D image hidden inside. And it’s not just a play of imagination, the hidden image is very realistic. You will see exactly what was put in by a stereogram artist. Basically you need to unfocus your eyes and look through the stereogram. Picture becomes blurry and doubled and that is exactly what we want. This will make pattern tiles to overlap each other and each eye will be seeing a slightly different image. Disparency in views will make your brain see hidden 3D images. Some people who have problems with binolular vision most likely will not be able to see the hidden image. Other vision issues such as nearsightedness and farsightedness will not affect much your ability to see autostereograms. The

TRIVIA FROM some FAMOUS AUTO INVENTORS

There are people who envision the future and then make it a reality. They’ve engineered solutions, crafted new options, and built the tools we need to get around every day but you can see below from the titans of the industry that many of them had to struggle and battle obstacles.  HENRY FORD’S first company went out of business. So did his second and third.  DAVID BUICK died before his brand experienced true success.  ENZO FERRARI almost died from a flu epidemic, had his family’s business collapse, and didn’t even get a job as a test driver. He later became a legend as a racecar driver.

a bit of history

R

ecorded history of the KZN South Coast is largely divided into before and after 1895 and the advent of the railway. It took 6 years of dogged determination to complete this venture between Durban and Port Shepstone and just a few hours by train changed everything! Margate was described as one of the most progressive holiday resorts in South Africa by Mr RB Archibald MPC when he officially opened the Margate Country Club in 1959. Margate was declared a township in January 1941 and received municipal status in 1947.  The Waffle House in Ramsgate on the KZN South Coast has been serving waffles since 1991  It was originally started in 1957 by John & Doreen Gaze as the Teahouse of the Blue Lagoon. Doreen is still involved in the business today  The first known waffle recipe was written in the 14th century  Belgian Waffles are know as Brussels waffles with their rectangle shape and square holes

The small village of Umzumbe is believed once to be the home of a vicious group of renegades, the Hlongwa. It is for this reason that the Zulu named this river Mzumbe, which explained means ‘the dangerous river’. They were eventually almost wiped out by Shaka, the Zulu King in 1828.

WINTER WEATHER TIPS FOR PETS Cats often sleep where there is warmth and some might choose the wheel well so to prevent injuries bang loudly on the hood of your vehicle before you drive off. This should wake up the cat and give it a chance to escape. Ideally all pets should live inside. If you pets live outdoors primarily bring them in during the cold weather and/or provide them with warm and dry bedding and suitable shelter. If it is too cold for you, it is probably too cold for your pet. Feeding your pet a little bit more during winter can provide the much needed calories as pets burn extra energy by trying to stay warm in wintertime.

All About

Sardines

As the aloes begin to bloom, and the winter months approach, and the early morning chill makes you want to snuggle a bit deeper into bed, that’s when the first flocks of gannets arrive, and then you know that the annual sardine run along the Wild Coast is soon due to start. It’s been called the “Greatest Shoal on Earth” and it’s one of the planet’s biggest migrations in terms of biomass. Along South Africa’s east coast, between May and July, billions of spawning sardines travel north towards Mozambique. They are pursued by predators ranging from sharks to dolphins, whales and even humans.

Why you should choose a skylight?  Enhances natural light  Saves on energy costs  Creates visual connection to the outside  Adds value to homes and offices A patio roof, with skylight, adds square meterage to any home and affords you the opportunity to enclose open (dead) spaces, without reducing light.

Ramsgate is located on the mouth of a river known by the Zulu name Bilanhlolo “the marvellous boiler” for the bubbles caused by the strong currents making it look like the water is boiling. In 1922, the only character living there was Paul Buck, a painter and violin maker who called the place Blue Lagoon. The Waffle House is located right here.

gag-a-while THE SHREDDER A young engineer was leaving the office at 5.45pm when he found the CEO standing infront of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand. “Listen,” said the CEO, “this is a very sensitive and important document, and my secretary is not here. Can you make this thing work?” “Certainly,” said the young engineer and he turned on the machine, inserted the paper and pressed the START button.

Rock, Paper, Scissors! The police just pulled me over and said, “Papers?”, I said, “Scissors, I win!” and drove off. I think he wants a rematch-he’s been chasing me for 45 minutes.

“Excellent, excellent” said the CEO as his paper disappeared inside the machine, “I just need one copy.” LESSON: NEVER, NEVER EVER ASSUME THAT YOUR BOSS KNOWS WHAT HE’S DOING!!

Fitness andHealth Did you know?  Even at rest, muscle is three times more efficient at burning calories than fat and exercise prevents signs of ageing too.

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live” Jim Rohn

 Regular exercise helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Two major risk factors for heart disease.  The knee is the largest and most complex join in your body which makes it most likely to be injured.

Breathe some life into your lungs this winter season and do some cardio exercising which will help increase your lung function and improve your lung capacity. Your lungs provide oxygen and keep every other organ functioning by removing carbon dioxide from your body so your lungs play an important role in your general health. To accommodate the heart did you know that your right lung is larger than the left lung and 70 % of waste is eliminated through your lungs just by simply breathing.
