Editor’s Note spring Edition 2022

Hello Spring, a lovely reminder of how beautifulchangecantrulybe.Withthat cold winter weather behind us we can now look forward to displays of wildflowers dotted all over, birds chirping and all the trees that will display their new full set of green leaves Spring is indeed a time of rebirth, new beginnings and growth. The business world also seems to wake up from the winter grind with new opportunities sproutingallover Musical lyrics have always reflected the desire of mankind to look towards a new, freshstartthattheseasonofspringgivesus. Flowers bloom and the barren landscape greens up after the refreshing spring rains. Songs about spring have been popular for decades.“Icanseeclearlynow”byJohnny Nash is a song that has become an anthem foranyoneneedingapositiveoutlookonlife. Nash'soptimismaboutthebright,sun-shiny days that spring brings is captivating in the sensethatweleavebehindthedark, difficult days of winter in favour of the hopeful blue skiesstraightahead.

There will be those days in your life that will be dull and dreary but as the world fights to figureeverythingout,I'llbeholdingdoorsfor strangers, lettingpeoplecutinfrontofmein the traffic, saying good morning, sharing food and being patient with sales clerks. ALONE BUT NOT LONELY

DearEditor

Just a short note to thank the South Coast. My mother passed away earlier this year after living on the South Coast for about twelveyears. Shelivedaloneandabsolutely loved the beach and spent many days walking and collecting shells She was alwaystreatedwithrespectandkindnessat the local Captain's Anchor in Southport by their staff Even though the little old lady with the big sunhat is seen no more at Anerley, Southport and Umtentweni beaches I know her heart will be there forever Thank you all. You will never know howmuchallthekindnessmeanttoher.

Spring has always been my favourite season. I love new beginnings and the prospect of hope that comes with it. As thelittleinsectsstarttomakeanappearance again, the days warm up and new buds begin to open, spring is the ultimate reminderthatafterhardshipcomesease.

IhaveadearfriendinUkrainewhoturned70 inJuly.Shewasnotsureifshewouldseeher 70th birthday due to the war She has endured what most of us could not even imagine. She lost her husband and then her brother just months apart from each other and now lives alone. But through all of this, she has her garden to keep her going, and sends me pictures often. Lilies, petunias, roses, grapes, tomatoes, cucumbers! Her picturesleavemeinabsoluteawe. Evenina land at war, nature is resilient. Those green shoots push through the dry, hardened earth and delightful flowers gracefully take their spotlight and bloom. It's all part of this glorious cycle of life that persists unceasingly, comerainorshine.

surprise of bright purple Bellis blooms on spring day! The ushering in of the life giving season has also brought renewed hope, the rekindling of old friendships and a general feeling of excitement for wonderful days to come We tend to become secluded in colder months, wrapped up indoors, but as our coast warms up, I've been reminded of the warmth, joy and comfort in good company, of which there is no shortage on the South Coast! So this season I'm looking forward to a spring cleaning of the mind, body and soul to make room for more kindredheartsandsmilingfaces.

I hope that no matter what you've been through you can feel some of this blossoming euphoria too, and remember that the sun will always rise again, and the magic that grows in the garden grows in all ofus.

With the windy Spring months upon us we are just a short way from the summer weather arriving. This can be a frustrating time of year as conditions are often spoiled by big cold fronts and strong winds. With that said this time of year also brings with it some great angling opportunities.

Offshore fishing at this time of year is generally focused on bottom fishing with most deep water reefs and pinnacles holding geelbek and amberjack. These put up a good fight and are caught mainly on a selectionofdeadorlivebaitsonheavytackle. There are usually shoals of yellowfin tuna around mainly on the deeper reefs such as AliwalShoalandProteaBanksandthesefish areregularlycaughtontrollingluressuchas Rapalas, Halcos and Speedpros or on live baits and sardine block baits Another popular species that starts to make an appearance is the Cape Yellowtail, a hard fighting gamefish found on deeper pinnacles and reefs and usually caught on live bait and vertical jig. These strong fish giveanglersarunfortheirmoneyandsturdy tackle and good technique are required to tamethesefiestyfish.Pleasetakenoteofthe various Marine Protected Area regulations

pertaining to permitted bottom fishing zones as well as bag limits on the various species.

Fortherockandsurfguystheinshorewaters are producing some kob on paddletails and baits as well as Garrick (leervis) which are targeted off most deep water points using livebaitssuchasshadorpinkies.Anglersare reminded to stick to the bag limits and to respect the shad closed season which runs 1stOctoberto30thNovember.

Estuaryfishing isagreatoptionasthe rivers are mainly clean as we come out of winter. Lure fishing in the main estuaries will be productive for perch, rock salmon and small kingfish.Mostoftheriversareverybusywith recreational boating and skiing so concentrate on river mouths on incoming tides as well as the upper reaches of the rivers.

Key questions about the stance of the Springboks as it pertains to their World Cup title defence in France in 2023 will be answered on their daunting end-of year tourinNovember.

Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber's primary focus has been on becoming the first South African side to win back to-back World Cups That's meant making a few predictably self defeating selections - such as backing ice cold veterans returning from lengthy injury layoffs ahead of red hot rookies-andalarminglossesthisseason. Erasmus earned the favour of South African supporters for his remarkable rescue job to guide the Boks back to global glory in 2019 He's a master planner and as such, he won't be pressured into drastically altering his plans to steady the ship ahead of next year's WorldCup.However,theBoks'poorwin-loss record in the current cycle shows select,

As rough as the Rugby Championship was, things will only get tougher on the year end tourastheBoksgoupagainsttheimperious IrishandFrench, aswellasItalyandEngland. The back to back blockbusters in Dublin and Paris will not only reveal how the Boks measure up to the two best teams in the world, but also if the brains trust have learned from their tactical and selection mishaps, if key players will step up and whether any World Cup hopefuls will force theirwayintothefirst choicematch23. Conviction, confidence and character are required to end the year on a high. Whether the tour is a glowing success, or a colossal failure, claritywillbefound.

What goes down eventually goes up of course. There are infamous hills named 'Mushroom', 'Mini Mushroom', 'Scorpion', 'Sky Climb' and many, many more. There's evenonesomeonecalled'Eish!'.Onecanget off and push, but it's downright embarrassing.

That's the beauty of the sport down here… very few manicured tracks, just raw up and

down trails, through natural forests and across rocky streams, many of them on the landsofcyclefriendlyfarmers.

Plus our tarred toads aren't blessed with cycle lanes. Who can forget the tragic demise of our most famous Olympic mountain biker, the great Burry Stander, abouteightyearsago?Hiswhite'ghostbike' (which, sadly, had to be replaced after the first one was stolen) is still propped up on a poleclosetowherehewastakenoutbyataxi at Shelly Beach. Local cyclists give it a silent salutewhentheyridepast

However, if huffing and puffing up hills isn't your thing, we are also blessed with one of the few flat, hard beaches in the country, where one can speed along unhindered for about20km.ItisjustsouthoftheWildCoast Sun,but, bewarned…goatlowtide.Someof usfoundoutthewetwayrecently Surfingis cool,butwithaboard.Onabikeit'snotfun.

HelloEveryone,

It’s nearly the summer holidays and nearing the end of another hectic year in our beloved country. As South Africans we have immense courage and staying power. As we look to the stars for the next three months for guidance, the message remainsoneofpositivity. A new broom is making some clean sweeps as people reassess their relationships with eachotherfromourmarriagesrightthrough to the highest places in parliament. It’s a painfulprocessbutoneverymuchneededif we are to grow and mature as the beautiful rainbow nation we are destined to become.

This is Saturn squaring off the nation’s sun, while Uranus continues to make its connection. Mandela had a vision, we are livingitoutandmakingitareality!

It’s a rollercoaster ride for sure. But there is light. By 2024 we will be looking back having cemented our collective choices we makethisyearthroughtoMay2024,whena progressed new moon brings a new dawn. Let’s make good choices, based on love and notfear!

Let’s use our Christmas cheer and remember the values that Scrooge learnt whenhewasvisitedbytheGhostsofhispast, present and future. Let’s reach out and touch each others lives with compassion as Venus makes a conjunction to our nations Jupiter in the place of home this Christmas. It’s the promise of a short reprise from the planet of love to spread some Christmas cheerbeforewestartthenewyear!!!.....

“Why is the print on these instructions so tiny?”

“Who in the world is calling me at 900pm?”

“Wait! What did I come in here for?”
