e are nearing the end of another year that has flown past and a year that has been very challenging for me. A year with highlights and lowlights, and I want to thank all who have supported me to date. It is a good feeling to have all members healthy after a few health scares amongst some of us. Lion Mike Marshall, you will remain in our thoughts and prayers. There was a few of us that attended the Midyear Conference in Ladysmith a week ago. Need I say more about the most amazing Club in the District. Port Shepstone walked away with 7 awards for the lionistic year 2014/2015. The most Prestigious being “Club of the Year”. Well done to Past President Alistair Warman for a great year under your leadership. Thank you Council Chairman Elect, Denis, for the tireless work you put in with the “Sheppie Pride” and all the media coverage items or articles that you put forward for our club. Three of the awards I can honestly say you achieved single handedly for our club, there was no other club close in my opinion. You are truely an inspiration and a role model to all of us.

Whilst the past month has been relatively quiet, we have a busy few weekends coming up. The Christmas Parties for the Aged and also for the

Children of Suid Natal Junior School. This is again one of those times where we can give back to the community and the less fortunate than ourselves. These are two of the most rewarding projects for our club and the happiness shown on the faces is priceless. Thanks to those Lions and Lion ladies who will be helping. We will also be having our year end Christmas party and lets go out and enjoy this in true Port Shepstone Lions fashion. Finally, I would like to wish everyone of you and your families an unforgettable Christmas and the most awesome New year. Jeff Smith Club President

Dear Lion Jeff I wanted to write to say how very grateful we, as a family, are to the Port Shepstone Lions. When I speak to Colin I can hear in his voice the difference you have made to his daily life and the fact he can now see to read is such a plus. Please pass on our thanks to all concerned. Thank you. Marlene

I was looking through some Friendship Banners for Medway Lions Club (my old club that no longer exists) and I came across the attached - Port Shepstone Lions Club banner. Small World. Someone from Medway must have made a visit as there were several from South Africa. Jill & I are off to a 60th Charter with Valenciennes Centre Lions Club our twinned club from District 103 Nord (France) on Friday. Should be a great weekend. They were twinned with Medway; when they folded I was president of Whitstable & twinned with them so the association has lasted over 40 years and I've known them for some 15. I've made a banner to celebrate the long association. Kind regards to you and all Port Shepstone Lions Club Mike Shaw editor SE News Whitstable & Herne Bay Lions Club

HOW TO DEAL WITH AN UNEXPECTED VERVET VISIT With a trip to the coast, comes unexpected visits from vervet residents who occupy the trees and land. Vervet monkeys are protected and while some may say they’re a nuisance, injuring or killing them is an offence. Vervets are not aggressive animals but care should be taken to prevent injury to yourself or the monkeys. Monkey Helpline, an organisation dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating injured vervets, provided these tips to dealing with an unexpected guest in your holiday home. Use a hosepipe to squirt them - squirt, don’t spray! A water pistol os squirt bottle is just as effective. Vervets are easily shooed away simply by walking towards them and waving a small towel, dishcloth or other similar item. Don’t be intimidated if they stand their ground and threaten you. They will turn tail and flee as you get closer. Vervets are naturally wary of snakes; realistic rubber snakes placed around your holiday home can discourage them. Vervets usually fear men more than they do women so, if possible, the vervets should be chased away by men. Prevent foraging in refuse bins by securing the lids with a convenient but Vervet-proof clip or strap. Sprinkle Jeyes Fluid inside, on the outside or around refuse bins and bags. Don’t ever try to catch a Vervet or its baby. Don’t even try to touch a Vervet or pull its tail. If you feel threatened by a Vervet, do not turn your back on it or try to run away. Back away slowly whilst continuing to face it. At no stage, under any circumstances, start screaming. This will confuse and frighten the monkey/s and could result in a panicked, defensive response from them. Don’t allow children with food into an area where vervets are present. Do not feed vervets by hand or from doors or windows, etc. If your house is left unattended, doors and windows should be kept closed or only slightly ajar so as to prevent vervets from gaining access. Keep fruit and other food concealed when vervets are about.

lub President Jeff Smith, Council Chairman Elect Denis Meyer, Immediate Past District Governor Martin Rundle and Immediate Past Club P r e s i d e n t A l a s t a i r Wa r m a n represented the Port Shepstone Lions Club at the annual District 410-C Midyear Conference held at the Royal Hotel in Ladysmith Kwazulu-Natal during the weekend of 7-8 November. The conference was attended by several Lions representing Lions Clubs in both Kwazulu-Natal and the Freestate provinces. During the conference, awards were presented by the Immediate Past District Governor to various clubs in recognition of outstanding service and achievements during the 2014/2015 fiscal year. Port Shepstone Lions received a total of 7 awards which included Lions Club of the Year, Overall Public Relations award, Ian Murray Project Public Relations award, Club Bulletin award, Paddy McMenemy Hearing project award, Roy Hardman award for projects for the Disabled and a

Louis Halse award for being a 100% contributing club. These awards were proudly accepted by Lion Alastair Warman as they were achieved during his term as Club President. The Conference was officially opened by Council Chairman Elect Denis Meyer and included a day of report backs by the various District Project Chairmen, sharing of service ideas and fellowship amongst the clubs. Lions Clubs International celebrates 100 years of service in 2017 and to commemorate this achievement, a Centenary Challenge program has been launched which aims to provide community services to 100 million underprivileged people worldwide. District 410-C delegates discussed various ideas on how to launch a Centenary project that would include all clubs within the district. The Conference was followed by a very enjoyable “Ebony & Ivory”

theme banquet and most clubs dressed accordingly for the event. Music was provided courtesy of Lion Denis Meyer. The following morning Cabinet officers attended their 2nd cabinet meeting after which they headed home. Grateful appreciation to Cabinet Secretary Karin Preston for her fine efforts in organising the Conference weekend as well as the management and staff of the Royal Hotel for their outstanding hospitality and facilities, excellent catering and superb accommodations. Lion (Doctor) Hilton Horsley

30 Years of outstanding service to Lionism & many more years of service to mankind

L

ion Hilton Horsley was presented with a 30 year attendance award at the Club’s October meeting.

Hilton began his Lionistic career in 1985 as a Charter member of the Eshowe Lions Club. In 1987 he transferred to the Westville Lions Club in Durban for a year before moving to Port Shepstone in 1988 to set up his new practice as a general practitioner. After a few months in Sheppie, Hilton was introduced to the members of Port Shepstone Lions by the late Lion Denys Hudson (a Charter member of the Sheppie Lions Club) and was unanimously accepted into the club. Lion Hilton served on the Club’s board of directors for a number of years and went on to serve as President of the Club from 1994 1996. In 1998 the Lions Club of Port Shepstone honoured Hilton with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award and a few years later he was Lion Hilton Horsley (left)receiving his 30 Years of presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship Award by the Port Shepstone Service Medal from Immediate Past President Al Warman Rotary Club. Hilton is currently the only serving Lion in our District who has been honoured with both these prestigious awards, both of which were presented in recognition of his ongoing dedication to humanitarian service. During 1988, when Hilton arrived in Port Shepstone, he also became a Life Member of South Coast Hospice and has, for the past 12 years, served as Medical Director of the Hospice. Hilton, together with fellow Sheppie Lion Dusty Miller also served as KZN Directors for the Reach For A Dream Foundation shortly after it’s formation in the early 1990's. Together they travelled the province, promoting the foundation and they also hosted many terminally ill children at their respective homes. Hilton’s commitment to Reach For A Dream continued for several years and he remained a director of the foundation for 10 years. Hilton also served as Regional Medical Officer for the KZN Ambulance Services in Port Shepstone back in the late 1980's and was often called out at all hours to assist with medical emergencies. Hilton voluntarily visited and consulted with patients twice a week after hours at Anerley Haven home for the aged for 2 years after which they paid him a small fee to continue visits for the next 18 years. Hilton completed his studies as a medical practitioner in 1972 and qualified in the top 8 at UCT Medical School. In recognition of this achievement he was presented with the Moffat Memorial Prize and his name is reflected just a few names below that of Professor Chris Barnard on the honours board at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. He has since completed an additional 6 medical diplomas. Hilton is passionate about music and is himself a talented musician and singer. From the age of 17 until the age of 21 he played and sang with bands until he began his studies at medical school. During this time he also worked as a lifesaver on Durban’s North Beach. His passion for music continues today and he regularly entertains both our youth and the elderly at Lions projects. Hilton also provides First Aid training for Lions members at the Port Shepstone Lions Club from time to time. Hilton has, for several years, been the driving force behind both the Annual Port Shepstone Lions Leadership Retreat and Annual Christmas Luncheon for Senior citizens. He has also been involved with the club’s monthly bingo sessions. He assists annually with the identification of worthy candidates for the club’s cataract operations project as well as all other medically related requests/projects. Lion Hilton remains one of the most committed humanitarians in our community and is an inspiration to us all. The Port Shepstone Lions Club is privileged to have a member of this calibre who has served Lionism so well for the past 30 years.

SALUTE!

D

uring the club’s October meeting members unanimously agreed to sponsor the design costs and hosting of a new website for South Coast Hospice. The annual hosting fees for this website will be reviewed by the club on an annual basis.
