One of my objectives during my term in office as President is to improve or concentrate more on service levels within the portfolio of community services. I'm happy to announce that we will be launching diabetes testing in our area of service from January 2015. I thank Lion Mike Marshal who will be heading up this portfolio and also thank Mike's wife, Lady Lion Debbie a professional nurse who will be assisting us in this worthy project. We have planned to run a food collection at our local Supermarket on Sat 20th Dec and I urge all to assist Lion Jeff and Lady Lion Anna who will be

coordinating the collection. Food parcels will be put together for those in need during the Festive season

December 2014

In closing I wish our members and their families a wonderful Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Please drive safely during the festive season and be extra vigilant of other unforgiving drivers who put us at risk.

ort Shepstone Lion's President Alastair Warman presented Mr PW Botha of Reinhardt's Place with a cheque to the value of R3000-00 on behalf of the Club. The money donated was part of the funds raised from the Lions catering tent at the 2014 Hibberdene Ski-boat Club Couta Classic and will be utilised towards the facility which provides support for mainly brain damaged children. A delighted Mr Botha was most relieved to receive the donation as he has already had to sell his car in order to arrange funding for new roofing for one of the buildings at the facility.

n Saturday 15th November, a group of Sheppie Lions woke up bright and early to attend the very first South Coast Hospice Inbuzi Enduro. uring December, Lions Martin Rundle and Andre Beneke visited the Rape Crisis Centre at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital and presented a large fluffy tiger to Sister Dudu Ndlovu, Manager at Thuthuzela Care Centre. Sister Ndlovu is also the Clinical Forensic Specialist at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital. The toy will be used to bring some comfort to victims during counselling. Many thanks to Michelle Lines who very kindly donated this wonderful gift. Michelle has also donated a number of paintings to the Port Shepstone Lion Ladies Club who plan to auction them off in the near future and raise funds for charity.

his year during November, a group of Sheppie Lions and Lion Ladies once again visited Suid Natal Primary School in Oslo Beach, Port Shepstone. A large number of the pupils at this school come from poverty stricken families and many will not receive presents this Christmas. The Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies have

been supporting this school for a number of years now by providing the children with gifts and treats to celebrate the Season of Goodwill and provide some sort of comfort in these very difficult times. n Saturday 6th December, Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies hosted their 24th Annual Christmas Luncheon for Senior Citizens at the Port Shepstone High School Hall. Approximately 80 senior folk from the Flower Foundation, Anerley Haven, Mbango Valley (Villa Bruno) and other residences in the area were transported to the event by Lions members. They were all treated to a superb live music ensemble courtesy of Sue Neilson on the keyboards, Lion Hilton Horsley on the guitar and singer Brian Algie. The guests were serenaded with Christmas Carols and other beautiful melodies. The guests were served a delicious Christmas lunch prepared by the Sheppie Lion Ladies. Santa Clause, aka Lion Johann Du Plessis and Club Mascot, Melvin the Lion, aka Lion Laurie Lourens presented each guest with a sponsored Christmas gift bag filled with wonderful presents. The whole event was, once again, a huge success thanks mainly to project coordinator Lion Hilton Horsley and his team of dedicated Lions and Lion Ladies. Port Shepstone Lions are extremely grateful to Sue Neilson for once again providing the live music as well as Port Shepstone High School for allowing the Club to use their superb facilities and providing a generator which compensated for the load shedding which took place during the event. The Lions would also like to thank the Hostel catering staff, Sunrise Farms, the Frey family and Fresh Meat for their sponsorship, assistance and support.

erriment, fun, laughter, great food and “interesting” presents were the order of the day at the Sheppie Lions’ annual Christmas party. This year’s event was very kindly hosted by Lion Jean and Lion Lady Myrna Masson at their lovely home in Umtentweni. As usual Jean and Myrna went our of their way to decorate the venue and provide a superb atmosphere for all who attended. Chrissie Wilson cooked the delicious 3 course meal and Lion Denis provided music for the evening. The traditional Christmas gift swapping was, once again thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Each Lion and Lion Lady had to bring a wrapped gift. All gifts were placed together on a table and all were given numbers from 1-54. Number one had first choice of the gifts and, once unwrapped, if he/she didn’t like the gift then they could swap it for another gift that was already unwrapped and so on. The higher numbers obviously had a better selection to choose from and No 1 had the final selection. There were lots of laughs and quite a few hysterical moments. The gift that did the most rounds was the rubber chicken pet toy - this ridiculous looking thing made the most awful screeching sound when squeezed which, for some reason, generated a great deal of laughter. It was a great evening and the “die hards” ended up dancing the night away in true Sheppie Lions’ style. A wonderful way to end a superb year by a truly wonderful group of people who make such a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. A very Merry Christmas to all Sheppie Lions and Lion Ladies!
