We look forward to a bumper Show and welcome all visitors from far and wide,

including Lions from literally all over the country. Our condolences to Lion Gary Baker whose mother, Jackie was called to rest last week. Jackie was a well known, much loved personality on the South Coast. A very happy 70th birthday to long serving Lion and community service giant, Lion (Dr) Hilton Horsley. May you be blessed with many more and thank you for all that you have done for the South Coast community. G

aby Frey has been helping people to train their dogs for over 40 years. Under Gaby's mentorship many handlers of all ages, have qualified to participate at the SA champs. She has an incredible passion for the sport of Dog Agility that has led her to achieve great heights with her own dogs, especially her poodle Scooby. In response to a growing demand for coaching and training, Gaby recently branched out on her own and opened her own training academy called Dogs-R-Us. “Any age of dog is trainable, whether for competitions or just for recreation” explains Gaby. “My first dog was 8 years old. Naturally, it's ideal to start training with your dog as a puppy, because our puppy courses establish foundations of trust, understanding, and communication with your dog that will enhance your relationship and performance for the rest of your dog's life.” The show performance starts off in the main arena with the “Hound Heist” watch to see if the notorious LEXICLAN are caught! This includes general obedience and tricks that the dogs have been taught. This is followed by a demonstration of how we start teaching young dogs to have fun with tunnels and also how much fun fully trained dogs have. You will see them travelling at lightening speed through the tunnels. We then have a knock out pair competition to see who is the fastest and most accurate of the dogs on display. Then fun knock out races for the kids with a slight twist.

W

hen news of the fires in Knysna was released on 7 June 2017, Lions Clubs from all over Southern Africa, and the even the world responded. In a matter of minutes support started to roll in by way of resources and financial assistance, so that the Lions Clubs from Knysna, Sedgefield, George and Eden could mobilise their Level Three emergency relief plans. Lions members and affiliates immediately became involved by way of providing firefighting assistance, information dissemination, community and corporate resource requests, as well as sorting and distributing products to both victims and firefighters. The Knysna fires disaster resulted in many tons of food, clothing and other supplies being trucked into the region to aid victims; but also resulted in large financial contributions which will be used to support the relief efforts. To date, over R1 million has been received for this purpose; with contributions from Lions Clubs International Foundation USA ($10 000), Miss SA Trust (R196 000); Henties Bay Lions Club in Namibia (R200 000) forming some of the larger donors. Always being on the front line of disasters, Lions are all too aware of the effect their volunteered time has on those who receive their selfless aid. The Knysna fires and wind storms were no exception … they were there to console when young firefighter hero Bradley Richards lost his life, to see the tears in the eyes of the emergency helicopter pilot as he told the stories of what he saw from above, to hug and listen to the heart wrenching stories of those who walked away from their homes with nothing more than the clothes they were wearing, to carry a resident’s dog to safety and of course, to accept the bag of marbles donated at a collection point by a 6 year old who couldn’t help but think of the other children who have lost everything! There are MANY more stories to be told … It is said by members of the organisation that Lions serve with pride – the response from Lions around the world and the community who support their continuous efforts has certainly proven that this organisation and its members make a significant impact on their communities, and can indeed be proud of their achievements over the last 100 years. Standing in front of a truck and trailer full of donations from the greater Durban and lower South Coast areas are Lyn Curnow, Irene Love, Desiree Du Toit, Jeff Smith, Martin Rundle, Nico De Jong, Kevin Ross, Gary Baker, George Leggett, Denis Meyer and Marius Du Plessis .

I

n response to the news of the Knysna fires, Port Shepstone Lions made an immediate donation of R10 000-00 and set up 2 collection points where members of the public could hand in donations of non-perishable food items, blankets, clothing and various other items that would bring relief to those affected. Lion Lady Jenny Vogt opened up her business, Party Costume Hire in Umtentweni and Lion Jeff Smith and his partner, Ramsgate Lion Desiree Du Toit opened up their business, C-Side Gas in Margate as points of collection. The outpouring of generosity from our local South Coast community, the tears, the cash donations, the sheer determination to provide assistance to those affected was quite overwhelming. The collection point at Party Costume Hire in Umtentweni ended up with "mountains" of donations. Lion Ladies Jenny Vogt and Bella Gallagher worked tirelessly in organising their collection point, networking with every individual that walked in to donate and they even labelled items donated. The collection point at C-Side Gas in Margate was a combined Port Shepstone and Ramsgate Lions project. Lion Jeff Smith and Ramsgate Lion Desiree Du Toit opened up their shop to the hundreds of donors who literally filled up the shop with bags of clothing, blankets, boxes of groceries and even a microwave oven! On Monday 12th July, members gathered at the Port Shepstone Lions Clubhouse in Umtentweni, to pack a large trailer, wait for the truck from Durban and then pack the truck when it arrived. The truck was donated by Lion Andrew Palmer of the Gillitts Lions Club. Donations were brought through from both the Margate and Port Shepstone Lions collections points by members and other community volunteers. After a while it was evident that the both the truck and trailer were not big enough to accommodate the huge amount of donations received. South Coast Mini and Maxi Moves very kindly offered to provide an additional furniture removal trailer as they already had a trip planned to Cape Town and were willing to stop over in Knysna and deliver donations. Their truck arrived on the following day and, with a tight squeeze, all items were safely packed on board. The fact that this all happened on the very day that Lions were celebrating 100 years of service worldwide made the occasion bitter sweet but also showed the sheer power of an organisation of volunteers determined to help those in need. Well done to all involved! - TEAM WORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK!!

Truck driver Wellington Botolo, who safely delivered the Knysna disaster relief donations for Lions Clubs in the greater Durban and KZN South Coast areas to Sedgefield, arrived safely in Port Shepstone at 7pm on 15th July to return the trailer. Although tired and exhausted from being on the road for 4 days, Wellington was all smiles when he was invited into the Port Shepstone Lions' Show Committee meeting and received a standing ovation from members present. Wellington was then presented with a Team Award by Council Chairman Denis Meyer for his fine efforts.

Our June Bingo for Seniors was once again very well supported. Many thanks to the Lions who transported and served the seniors and to the Lion Ladies for their superb catering.

A

n ultrasound scanner to the value of R100 000-00 was recently donated to the South Coast Hospice by the Port Shepstone Lions Club. Both Hospice CEO, Di Van Dyk and Sister Dina Thorncroft are thrilled with this donation. Bedside ultrasound scanning in a hospice setting is a relatively new initiative. Historically, Hospice has referred patients to a hospital for ultrasound scans. Much of the ultrasound scanning was done at the Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban which resulted in long delays in obtaining appointments and receiving results. Now all patients with possible ascites can be scanned prior to drainage. The ultrasound scanner will be used primarily to identify the exact location of tumours so that the staff can provide the required treatment in order to ease the suffering of patients. Bedside ultrasounds are non-invasive and well tolerated, aiding diagnosis for patients with suspected ascites, lung blockages or bladder problems.

A

nother centenary celebration project undertaken by the Port Shepstone Lions Club was the erection of a shelter for patients outside the Umtentweni Clinic. For some time now sick, elderly or pregnant patients have had to stand in either the hot sun or pouring rain waiting for assistance. The club decided to erect a shelter which provides protection and a place to sit and rest whilst waiting. Curnow KZN Insurance and Multicrop provided sponsorship and the club allocated an additional sum of R25 000-00 towards the project. Lion Kevin Ross/RD Civils completed the project in record time. The clinic's nursing staff and patients alike are delighted with the outcome.

CENTENARY CELEBRATION PROJECT

J

une 7th 2017 marked the 100th anniversary of Lions Clubs International.

During their May Club meeting, Port Shepstone Lions decided to allocate R20 000-00 towards 100 gift hampers for our senior citizens. Mr Graeme Milligan from Harbour View Superspar in Port Shepstone was contacted and agreed to deliver various grocery items to the clubhouse. He also sponsored an additional R2500-00 worth of groceries. Bargain Wholesalers also very kindly sponsored 100 tins of coffee and 100 packets of sugar. A work party was held on Saturday 3rd June where Lions and Lion Ladies packed the hampers. A letter (right) was included in each hamper explaining the purpose of the project and informing recipients of the Lions Clubs' Centenary celebration. During the morning of Wednesday 7th June Lions and Lion Ladies handed out the hampers to very grateful recipients at both the Flower Foundation and Marburg Haven homes for the aged. Members gathered afterwards at the Port Shepstone Lions clubhouse in Umtentweni to toast their Centenary with some bubbly.

J

eff Smith was born on 13 october 1965 in Durban. His family moved to Vryheid in 1966. Jeff matriculated from Vryheid high in 1983.

As a scholar, Jeff enjoyed sport and played cricket, rugby and soccer. He was also the lead drummer in the Vryheid high school cadet band. Whilst still at school, Jeff formed part of band called “The Pebbles”, playing the bass guitar. When asked what the pebbles referred to, he pointed out that this meant that when they grew up they wanted to become Rolling Stones! Jeff qualified for his driver’s license in 1983 but the week before that he passed his pilots license. His father gave my him and his brother the choice, his brother chose to skydive and Jeff went the flying route. After his national service Jeff joined Standard Bank and moved to Mooi River. A year later he was transferred to Pietermaritzburg. Jeff was later transferred to Vryheid, Matatiele, Kokstad and then finally to Port Shepstone. Jeff was promoted to Bank Manager with Standard Bank in 1999. Jeff married Jenny in 1988 and then two years later their only daughter, Jade (the apple of his eye), was born. Jeff’s father passed away in November 2003 from cancer which was the most tragic day in his life. Jeff resigned from Standard Bank in 2009 whilst in Port Shepstone, joined Berg Gasoline and was with them for the next 4 years. He then became a partner in C-side Gas in 2014. Lion Jeff was inducted as a member of the Port Shepstone Lions Club on 24th may 2012. He was sponsored by Lion Mike Davidson. . For the past 5 years, Lion Jeff has proven to be an exceptional Lion. He served as a member of the club’s board of directors for a number of years and was an active and dedicated participant in most of the service and fundraising projects undertaken by the club. His leadership skills came to the fore in 2014 when he took over as Community Services Director. In 2015 Lion Jeff was elected as President of the Port Shepstone Lions Club by his peers. Lion Jeff went on to serve 2 terms as Club President and, during the second term was also appointed as Zone Chairman for Zone 6. During the 2017 District 410-C Convention held in Cape Town, Lion Jeff was elected as 2nd Vice District Governor for District 410-C from the floor and has, once again, been appointed as Zone Chairman for the 2017/2018 Lionistic year. Lion Jeff’s pleasant disposition, hands on approach and friendliness to all members are a true testimony to his character. There is a saying that “if you want something done, ask a busy person to do it”. Lion Jeff is a very busy person and yet he always delivers – with a smile on his face and a song in his heart. Lion Jeff’s dedication to serving those in need, his gentle disposition and his loyalty to Lionism and all that we stand for has truly made him a man amongst men and someone that I personally am very proud to be associated with. Congratulations Lion Jeff on being awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship and an International President’s Certificate of Appreciation - so richly deserved! Denis Meyer Club President
