D34S September 2015: Summer Edition

Page 1

My name is Alexa and I am currently serving YOU as Lieutenant Governor of Division 34 South. The past summer has been a whirlwind for all of us purple penguins! From Officer Training Conference and International Convention to our July, August AND September Division Council Meetings! In addition of course to various Service Events we’ve attended like Tour De Cure, Mountain View Ice Cream Social, and more! I know it’s hard to get back into the groove of things, but even with school back in session, SERVICE NEVER SLEEPS! I’m happy to announce that the next month will be equally riddled with a plethora of events for us such as Region Training Conference, Fall Rally Spirit Prep, and of course, Fall Rally North! New Division T-Shirts along with Spirit Packs are now officially up for purchase, so remember to talk to your Officers if you are interested in getting loading up on Spirit Gear! One of our District Goals this year is to ensure every club has a total of 5 service events per month. Each club of course is free to add to that number. But the good news is, our Division will be trying our hardest to provide at least 2 of those Service events! One paired along with our usual Division Council Meetings and another Division Wide Service project to promote large scale service. They will be announced as they approach so get ready to serve! I know, I know, it’s crazy to have the first issue of the Pingu Post be this late in the term, but that’s only because we’ve only recently appointed our Division Leadership Team or DLT. Check them out on pages 4 and 5! We’ve also recently formed our Fall Rally Spirit Committee! Our Cheer video will be

> Hi Penguins! I am overjoyed to introduce myself as the Division News Editor. I’ll be coming out with a newsletter each month covering past and future events so look out for those. I seriously can’t wait to see what else this year will bring us whether it’s a few new members or the spirit stick at Fall Rally North. Regardless, I want to see the division grow 100% from the inside out, welcoming in people and sharing with them your passion for service. If you have any questions or suggestions, catch me at any event because you bet I’ll be there! - Mary Zhen, Division News Editor > What’s up Penguins? My name’s Helena Chi and I’ll be serving as your Division Secretary for this term! Hopefully you guys have all adjusted back to school because there’ll be so many more events coming up! I really look forward to getting to know all of you at DCM’s, all the other division events, and the big ones like FRN and DCON. This year, I’ll be dedicated to working hard with the other members of the DLT to make our division as amazing as possible! Please feel free to shoot me any questions or suggestions that you have about anything! - Helena Chi, Secretary

> Hello Penguins! My name is Valerie Tan, and I am currently a senior at Lynbrook. I am very excited to serve as your Executive Assistant during my last year in Key Club! I formerly served as Lynbrook's president and secretary, so hmu if you have any questions or need advice. I promise I don't bite very hard! My favorite DCM is the November DCM where we make blankets for preemies, and my favorite event is either RTC or FRN because I get to meet a bunch of other Key Clubbers. This year, I would like to see Key Club grow in terms of members and service hours! Outside of Key Club, I enjoy sleeping and eating. I hope to meet you guys at all the different events this year! - Valerie Tan, Executive Assistant > Hey division 34 south purple penguins!! My name is Gloria and I'm currently a senior at homestead high school! I'm beyond excited to serve as your executive assistant this year. I'm really looking forward to bringing this division to new heights this year. This is my fourth year in key club and it has been my favorite club in all of high school. Besides key club, i love sleeping, eating a lot, drawing, playing piano, and doing college apps of course (jk no). Don't be afraid to always come talk to me at anytime because I'm friendly and would love to meet everyone in our division. - Gloria Cheng, Executive Assistant

“It was blazing hot at Manresa State Beach on June 20th. The sun beat mercilessly on key clubbers (myself included) from all over the region. And the sand felt like tens of thousands of tiny coals individually heated to the temperature of the surface of the sun. Amidst the burning heat from above and below—saved only briefly by the occasional breeze—we all gathered together, prospective members and current officers alike, to teach and, in my case, to learn about what it means to be an officer and the duties it entails. We all split up into smaller groups and rotated around to officers who tirelessly taught us about different aspects of being an officer and enriching our clubs and the communities around us. At the OTC there was also a great lunch provided by our fantastic Kiwanis members and volunteers, a sand sculpture contest, and of course the beach! When I left, my arms and legs were painfully red, however, more than just getting a sunburn, I walked away with a better understanding not only of how to fulfill my position as VP, but also of how to service my community and create more opportunities for others to do so as well. I also learned that it really sucks to lose your phone at the beach. Overall, it was an informative and fun experience, albeit somewhat stressful for me (it wasn’t until after I had spent a while worrying about my phone and sifting through the broiling sand that I got my phone back from an awesome officer who picked it up earlier).” - Nate Palmer, Los Altos

“OTC is one of my favorite Key Club events. I've attended the past two OTCs and they were awesome experiences. Not only did I meet a bunch of new people in my division, as well as other divisions, I also learned things about the impact of Key Club and Key Club itself that I can apply to my job as VP. -Vicky Chung, Fremont

“During the July DCM, we had the pleasure of making sandwiches for the homeless over at Loaves and Fishes. We met up at Calabazas park and played games and had ice cream sandwiches. Our fellow Kiwanians were able to come, and Lynbrook Key Club made them cookies to thank them for chaperoning our event. We learned a lot about the upcoming year from our lovely LTG, and the DCM had us pumped for a great Key Club year! - Tanvi Varma, Lynbrook

“The August DCM, hosted by Cupertino, was mainly focused on learning about Key Club on a bigger scale, as well as having a back to school barbecue, hosted by Mountain View Kiwanis. We had a Key Club 101 presentation, played games, and had a speaker from Boys and Girls Club. For the service event, we had a canned food drive, where every member who brought 7 or more cans ate at the barbecue for free. However, the fee for the picnic if no cans were brought was $5, and all funds received went to PTP. Overall, we raised $75 from barbecue attendance fees, but Mountain View Kiwanis matched it, so we raised a total of $150! For the canned food drive, we collected 141 cans, which came out to weigh at 120lbs. This is more than double last year's donations of $49! The August DCM was perfect for ending the summer and was overall an educational, fun, & successful event. - Jessica Lee, Cupertino

“Although our September DCM was over the labor day weekend, 30 key clubbers showed up at Paly's Media Arts Center to share each club updates, learn cheers, and do a service project. To prepare our 34S division for many upcoming events, such as RTC and FRN, we went over some basic cheers, and I would say many of us learned something new through our cheer practice. We also broke up into small groups and practiced how we would recruit new key club members on our club days by presenting to Kiwanis advisors. It was really helpful for get some tips from the advisors as well as key clubbers from other schools. Then, as our community service project, we made cards for the VA veterans, so that they can use the cards we made to write to their family and friends. They all turned out well, and everyone was able to grab some extra pizza on the way out, which was definitely a nice way to end our DCM. - Minyoung Kim, Palo Alto

“The Art and Wine festival has been one of the few events that I have found to be the most socially invigorating. Throughout the past two years, the Art and Wine Festival has taught me not just the fundamentals of leadership, but also the key aspects of cooperation with both my peers and more grown up Kiwanians. - Garon Fok, Mountain View

“At

St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Labor Day, Homestead Key Clubbers set up and prepared meals at 9AM for the needy. They used a can opener machine to open cans of corn, helped organize utensils, sort cookies, cut fruit, and various preparatory tasks. At 11:00AM, they helped plate and serve the food to the happy and hungry. Over fifteen Homestead Key Clubbers worked with the Our Daily Bread staff at the church to bring a warm meal for those in need on Labor Day. Members were very enthusiastic to serve fruit and vegetable salad, as well as main dishes including fish, rice, crawfish etoufee, and a vegetarian egg scramble. Members were split between the serving staff who worked directly with the hungry in the front, and those in the back who bonded with the friendly staff as they plated the food. In addition to the much needed hot food, members gave out necessary food supplies such as produce, rice, and bread to feed the needy for the rest of the week. - Homestead Key Club

"Fremont Key Club connected to a local community garden, the Charles Street Garden by the Sunnyvale library. Our penguins spent 9am to 3pm constructing a new tool shed from the foundation up, and in the process made new friends and assured our KC's involvement in future CS Garden events. It was a super hot day, so after the project we celebrated with tacos and frozen yogurt!" - Ian Phillips, Fremont

“RTC was one of my first big Key Club events, and I thought it was a great experience! I really learned a lot from the workshops, and I even met some new Key Club friends. It gave me my first real taste of what Key Club is all about.” - Tesia Huang, Lynbrook

“Region Training Conference was one of my favorite Key Club events EVER. You get to meet key clubbers from all around while having a great time and learning more about how YOU contribute to the community around you. During RTC, you attend multiple stations of your interest/position which are hosted by experienced key clubbers who can answer any questions you have about anything! After attending RTC, I made a ton of new friends and learned so much about leadership, Key Club, and myself. I highly encourage all of you penguins to go to RTC and I guarantee you will have an unforgettable experience. “ - Brandon Choy, Past Division News Editor

Each year, thousands of members from all over Northern California and Nevada gather at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in October. At Fall Rally North, LTGs and Executive officers are "auctioned" off to divisions; the winning division is able to then spend a designated period of time with the "purchased" officer. A spirit stick is also awarded to the division that shows off the most spirit. Auction funds and a portion of the ticket sales for both events go towards the Pediatric Trauma Program.

Pediatric Trauma Program - Unintentional injury is the top killer of children under 14 in the United States - The money goes to purchasing updated technology for hospitals and training pediatric doctors for specialized cased
