Letter from LTG Aloha Purple Penguins! Welcome to the July Newsletter! I can’t believe it’s already been two whole months since the term started, time really does fly by! It’s officially summer season! And with summer means that there’s a lot of opportunity to prepare and get ahead for the new school year! I encourage you all to utilize the summer to continue to be active in service and for officers, to utilize this time to prepare for the upcoming school year, which means plans to recruit new members (so exciting!) You don’t want to take this special time for granted! I hope you guys had a lot of fun and were able to gain significant insight during our Key Club Training Conference, which occurred last month! I look forward to see you KEY-uties at our future division summer events :D Throughout this summer and this term, remember to ENJOY what you do– whether its service, fundraising, event planning, or anything else! This takes reminding yourself of the impact that you are making through key club and remembering why you joined in the first place! If you ever have any questions or just want to talk, please don’t hesitate to contact me!

Waddling in Service, REBECCA PAN

D34 KEY CLUB TRAINING CONFERENCE Written by Annabelle Law

"How Far We'll Serve"

This year’s Key Club Training Conference, which is traditionally hosted by sister divisions D34S and D34N, was hosted at Burton Park in San Carlos on June 8th from 11am to 4pm. The theme of this terms’s KCTC was “How Far We’ll Serve,” inspired by Moana. After Key Clubbers registered for the event, they were given a scavenger hunt. Attendees had to complete a list of tasks which included singing a song from Moana with someone from the sister division, giving someone a piggy-back ride, asking someone “How do you feel?”, and telling safekey pickup lines. After finishing off the scavenger hunt, members and club officers were able to attend a variety of workshops, such as officer position specific workshops where members learned more about Key Club and officers learned how to effectively fulfill their duties (ex. Presidents and Vice Presidents workshop, Key 101, etc). Afterwards, members rotated around Round Robin workshops, in which they learned of lessons that were applicable to both members and officers (ex. Effective Communication and Professionalism, Fundraising and Service, BEE a Leader, etc).

These lessons included fun interactive games for Round Robin groups to get to know each other better and informative presentations. In the late afternoon, lunch was served and attendees were able to cool down and relax. Once lunch was over, each division held their June DCM. After the DCM, LTGs Rebecca Pan and Emmanuel Flores led a “finish the lyrics” game and initiated a water fight. The training conference ended as an unforgettable experience for members of both divisions and marks the beginning of “How Far We’ll Serve”!

TOUR DE CURE On Sunday June 23rd, we had KEY-uties come and volunteer at June's division wide service event, Tour De Cure! Silicon Valley's Tour de Cure is a series of cycling events sponsored by the American Diabetes Association to raise funds for diabetes research. Our volunteers were tasked with a variety of tasks to makes sure the riders had a successful and fun event. Volunteers helped with volunteer registration, flagging the course, and cheering at the finish line. Thank you for all volunteers who attended the event! Hope to see you at July's service event!

DIVISION SHIRTS Thank you to everyone who submitted a design!

OUR CLUBS Los Altos

This month, we had a few meetings and concluded the school year with a few service events! We had one meeting where we had an informal "senior send-off" and thanked our advisor, as well as finished off our school year. We also volunteered at an event at Shoreline Lake where we helped kids with disabilities have fun on boats and paddle boards! Excited for next month and what is to come!

Monta Vista

We had an on-campus TPumps fundraiser and raised a little over $100. In terms of service projects, we made cards during a club meeting for every teacher on campus for Teacher Appreciation Week, helped out at an ice cream social at Lincoln Elementary, and volunteered at a senior center bingo night.

Homestead

We had one of our largest fundraisers of the year, the hands on art festival, and raised over 2000 dollars, with 48 hours of service. We had our first new board officer meeting, and started to make plans for next year and the summer.

Palo Alto

Through this month, every one just chilled at Key Club and we further trained our officers for next year! Also, the advisors and I were also discussing possible fundraisers for next year. In addition, our last meeting was quite successful. We had a lot of people coming to our meetings than usual (maybe because of food) and we even presented the officer of the year and member of the year award.

Gunn

Due to AP testing and finals during May, our club was unable to meet. However, our new officer board was elected and trained.

Mountain View In May of 2019, Mountain View Key Club volunteered at two runs—the Girls on the Run 5K, empowering thousands of girls, and the Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides 5K, working towards finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. Members also spent nearly 8 hours helping out at the San Jose Special Olympics. During Eliminate Week, they completed a very successful E-lemon-ate Challenge, gaining over 200 views on Instagram and raising a lot of awareness for maternal and neonatal tetanus!

Cupertino

In June, no fundraisers nor projects were done as it was finals week and we had our end of the year social in which we celebrated our members thats had the most hours. We also met to find a few dates in which we could meet over the summer to have a successful year.

Menlo Atherton

We volunteered at a relay for life, and we’re still trying to figure out our Kiwanis meetings and future events.

Fremont

With the start of the start of the new term, we had a couple of volunteer events and we held a Coin Drive for the whole month in collaboration with other clubs: Interact and Red Cross. It was very successful and we have collected over $300. We were also planning the end of the year Banquet, but the weather was really bad. However, for the last meeting, we brought food and played Kahoot to end off the year strong. We also gave out medals and chords for our seniors.

Lynbrook

With the new LHS Key Club officer team finalized, we have had meetings regarding the responsibilities and roles of each officer. Learning from the mistakes and experiences the club has been through last year, we have created a monthly calendar of all the tasks to be accomplished, a new system for ensuring the timely submissions of MRFs and tMRFs, and discussed new ways to utilize our Instagram page. Throughout the summer break, we will be holding meetings regarding the new term and continuing the preparation for Club Rush.

NEW TRADITIONS

Monta Vista

In a bittersweet moment, senior officers Alison and Satoshi held their final meeting of the term as they said goodbye. They told members about the great term they had this year, and in a sweet gesture made friendship bracelets for all the officers this term. Then, the new officer board was introduced, including several underclassmen, as well as the new president, Charlotte! After the introduction, Alison and Satoshi passed out cookies to members and presented the new board with a gift - a new stuffed penguin, marking the beginning of a tradition in Monta Vista Key Club.

SAN JOSE SPECIAL OLYMPICS Mountain View

!EVITCA EEB

On May 4th, Mountain View Key Club spent nearly 8 hours helping out at the San Jose Spring Games, an event held by Special Olympics Northern California at Fremont High School. Members primarily volunteered as timers at the swimming events, recording racers’ results and cheering them on. Many touching moments were shared between timers and racers--none of the volunteers will ever forget the swimmers’ triumphant cries of joy as they showed them their times. This event was a remarkable experience and one that Mountain View Key Club hopes to volunteer at again!

APPRECIATING OUR MENTORS

Monta Vista Monta Vista Key Club celebrated Teachers Appreciation Week, which was from May 5th to May 11th. During their meeting on the 7th, officers and members cut out and decorated cards to show appreciation for all teachers on campus. Members were given the opportunity to personally deliver finished cards to their teachers. Any and all remaining cards were placed in teachers' mailboxes, making sure that all teachers at Monta Vista received cards celebrating their contributions to the school and their students.

SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS HAVE FUN AT SHORELINE LAKE

Los Altos - Selina Zhang Working with kids who have disabilities at Shoreline was a really fun and fulfilling experience! I worked with a boy named Aiden who was super excited to go on the lake in different kinds of boats and paddleboards. Throughout the day, we did many activities, like paddleboating, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking with him. It was really cool to see him grow from a shy kid in the morning to a happy child out on the water. Overall, the event was very fun!

Volunteers help kids with aquatic activities and cheer them on.

FUNDRAISER AT

Homestead Hands on the Arts, better known as HOTS, is Sunnyvale’s annual children's’ art festival which features more than 30 workshop booths to try different art forms from different cultures, including music and dance. Every year Homestead Key Club hosts a vendor booth at the festival, selling pizza and cold beverages. Although it was pouring on the day of HOTS, Homestead was still able to fundraise over $2000. A portion will go towards PTP and the rest will go towards planning other events.

Letter from DNE Hey Key-uties! Thank you for reading through the July Newsletter! Although the school year has ended for a month now, happy summer! Ever since summer started, we jumped right into our annual Key Club Training Conference with D34N. I enjoyed the event as I was able to meet new people from both divisions and learn new lessons that can not only applied to Key Club, but also everyday life. If you weren't able to attend, that is totally fine! There are many more opportunities to explore Key Club, meet new people, serve your community, and make great memories. Speaking of opportunities, if you or your club would like to be featured on the newsletter, please contact me! You can submit articles and visuals of your club volunteering, doing service projects, or attending Key Club events that have benefited your home, school, or community. My goal this term is to give clubs and YOU the platform to share progress and experiences, inspiring others to improve. Take the summer season to reflect on the past term and stay active because service never sleeps! Thank you for reading and see you at the next Key Club event.

Waddling in Service, ANNABELLE LAW
