Letter From The LTG HELLO DIVISION 34 SOUTH,

Summer’s over and we’re watching the sun finally set. I hope you’ve had a great summer, but it really hasn’t been productive for the division that we serve and as Key Clubbers it is imperative for us to step it up. The summer was the golden opportunity that we had, unhindered by the school year. But I feel that many of us wasted it. It was the same last year too, but I hoped that it would be different this summer. For the month of May, I received 9 Monthly Reports and a total of 809.5 hours. For the amount of members that we have, which is around 235 dues paid members - that’s four hours or so per member. So what do all these statistics mean? It means we’re not actively going out and finding and coordinating our own service events. Let’s not let down our Kiwanians, let’s make sure we’re doing our roles as officers and the leaders of the of the communities that we serve. As members, I truly encourage and insist that you head your own service projects, find them, share them and communicate with the officers and the clubs that you serve. Let’s not forget the pledge we made as Key Clubbers - to build the home, school, and community. Photo by Mark Lu

So Start proactively planning a month or two ahead. Get involved with the Projects Chairs and the Executive Board of the clubs that you serve. Be friends with them and offer to help out and ask them for resources, or talk to me and ask me how you should plan events! For officers, don’t be afraid to talk to the members you serve and ask them to spearhead and find projects. Good luck with the first month of the school year, happy serving, and talk to me!

Sincerely,

PRESIDENTS’

HELLO

I’m Vicky Chung (or Chicky Vung to most), Fremont’s president for the 2016 - 2017 term. I would describe myself as a dad; I have an amazing yet terrible sense of humor and an even worse set of dance moves. I love taking pictures, making videos, music, food, and most importantly, anything that allows me to be creative, loud and a slight public disturbance So why did I get into Key Club? I had met an incoming senior, Raechel Chen, the summer before my freshman year, and she convinced me to join Key Club. I had no clue what Key Club was and the only time I had heard of it was in an episode of Pretty Little Liars, but I attended the first meeting anyway. Knowing that I was doing something that benefited others and maybe even caused them to smile was a feeling that I couldn’t find anywhere else. I’m really looking forward to serve Division 34 South as one of its presidents, especially because I’m going into my senior year. Who knows, maybe I’ll be somebody’s Raechel. And that just got a little too sappy and heartwarming, so I’ll wrap up my description. If you ever need a laugh or someone to cheer you up, I’m always available! My pick-up lines are great.

Hey penguins! My name is Jia and I am the president of Los Altos High School's Key Club. Joining Key Club was a quick decision I made halfway through my freshman year, when I found out that I had a few friends who were involved (and still are today). My first event was the Mr. Key Club Pageant of 2015: it put the "fun" in "fundraiser" in the best way possible. From then on, I learned many times over that community service is a way of life and something everyone should do to benefit themselves as well as others, instead of clocking up volunteer hours for the sole sake of boosting a college application. The entirety of my outlook on life stems from this, which I have Key Club to thank for. On the side, when I'm not serving as president, I am a poet, debater, flow artist, tennis player, and neuroscience enthusiast. My head's always full of indie and alternative music, but I've been getting into rap and EDM lately. Other things I like include rain, the color black, summer, and open mic nights. I'm also a full-time introvert and proud of it!

Hello, I'm Julia. I am currently a senior attending Homestead High School. At Homestead In my past time, I like to go outside for jogs, babysit two wonderful siblings, and catch up with friends. For anyone who knows me well, he or she knows my obsession for cocoa. I periodically carry Godiva pearl tins, bags of chocolate chips, or personalized boxes of See’s Candies in my purse to share. Also, if you have great reads to share, I am always a listening ear. It is an honor to serve my second term as Homestead Key Club President senior year. I have always loved to serve. Traveling to an underprivileged part of China as a teacher for the English Camp for freshmen and sophomore high schoolers for the past 3 summers has taught me many things. The students who were overcoming strife, poverty, and troubles with optimistic hearts showed me that a happy life is not necessarily materialistic. This summer I flew to Belize, serving as a counselor at the Belizean Vacation Bible School, finding that all children desire to be loved. Reflecting on my Key Club experience, I do not remember the exact moment that moved me to dedicate myself to Key Club. Perhaps it was the infectious "How Do You Feel?" cheer; the snazzy Purple Penguin theme; the international ohana shared between Builders Club, Key Club, Circle K, and Kiwanis Club; being blessed with Jamie Loeber as my mentor; or the combination of all of them. I love to serve. It's what I do.

Hi D34S Key Clubbers! My name is Kirsten Kwan. I am a rising senior at Palo Alto High School and the current president of Palo Alto Key Club 2016-17. Since I will be working closely alongside all of the presidents, I am going to give a little insight for all of you Purple Penguins into who I am. I have two brothers, one older brother and one younger. I have a dog named Kobi. I really like sushi. My favorite movie so far is The Imitation Game. I love travelling and hope to travel the world someday. Some of my hobbies are playing piano or guitar, especially when I am really stressed, and going outdoors somewhere to just relax. As for my involvement with Key Club, I first joined Key Club as a sophomore and quickly became deeply involved in the club. I started out just volunteering at the small local events hosted over the weekends with a good friend but as I grew more passionate and dedicated to Key Club, I began to consider running for a board position. Now, as the current president of Palo Alto Key Club, I look forward to bonding and working well with all the other amazing presidents of our division and devoted Key Clubbers.

Hey Penguins. My name is Stina and I currently serve as the Gunn Key Club President. I am super excited for the upcoming school year. I joined Key Club my freshman year. My older sister introduced me to Key Club and I instantly fell in love with it. My very first KC event was FRN. This really opened my eyes to what Key Club was really about. I honestly don’t think Throughout my years in high school, Key Club has become my second family. I have made so many friends because of Key Club and I couldn’t be more thankful. If you know me, you would know that I am a Kpop fanatic. I can talk about it day and night. One day I will have to chance to go to KCON LA. If you would like to go with me, hmu! I also love watching Korean dramas. My ideal Friday night would be: me curled up on my couch and watching drama all night. It’s not weird. Those two things are like my life. All jokes aside now, don’t be afraid to come and talk to me. I’m really easy to talk to and I will always do my best to answer any questions that you might have. I am really looking forward to have another fantastic year with the D34 South fam! Let’s make this one the best one yet!

Hello D34S! My name is Veronica Martin and I am the President of Lynbrook High School Key Club. I am currently a junior in the class of 2018. Aside from Key, I like to play softball, volleyball, and I love participating in Homecoming and rallies. My hobbies include drawing, graphic design, and video gaming. Most of the time, I love to meet new people and try different things. Personally, I got into Key Club because of my sister. She went to Cupertino High School her freshman year and told me all about it when I was in middle school. Key Club really interested me because I wanted to have opportunities to volunteer and it seemed fun. Little did I know about the leadership opportunities and friendships I would make along the way. On that note, I look forward to working with the division this year and I hope to get to know all of you better! :)

Aloha penguins! My name is Clarissa Pham, and I am so excited to serve as Mountain View Key Club's president for the 2016-2017 Key Club term. I joined Key Club my sophomore year feeling kinda skeptical, but I soon fell in love with the club after going to my first and favorite service event: The Art and Wine Festival in Los Altos. Key Club has changed my life so much by giving me a passion for community service and has introduced me to so many friends throughout the division and district. I learned that Key Club is so much more than just another community service club to put on your resume, it’s also an ohana (family).

Hey Guys, My name is Michelle Kwan. I am the Monta Vista Key Club president. I am currently a junior. I first joined in Key Club when I was in freshman year. In my freshmen year, I joined a ton of clubs since everything was so new to me and I wanted to explore my options. Throughout the year, I narrowed down my interests and Key Club was one of the few clubs that I remained active in. I loved how tightknit the club was and how everyone had fun together while volunteering for a good cause. The spirit that Key Club has made it very different from all other volunteer clubs that I know. Outside of Key Club, I have a few hobbies (when I’m not studying). I have dived for the Monta Vista diving team for the past 2 years and will hopefully continue to do so under the junior year stress. I also love to binge watch Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal!—two of my favorite shows.

Friends, family, and fellow Key Clubbers. I am Aaron Wong, c0-president of Cupertino Key Club. I am a simple man who enjoys simple things. My hobbies include basketball, long walks on the beach, and catching them all. For those who play Pokemon Go, just know Team Instinct is where it’s at. As for my personality, I would say I’m a loud person who enjoys doing stupid things. As my ol’ man always tells me, “Act first, think later.” Overall, I am a nice and approachable gentleman who has many talents. People often ask me, “How did you get into Key Club?” Well, it all began in freshman year with my friend, Benjamin Shiao was an officer of Cupertino Key Club. Ben and I were the dynamic duo. Eventually, we convinced all our friends to join Key Club, and we all attended the events. Hanging out with my friends on the weekends while giving back to the community is what awoken my passion for Key Club. The most memorable event that I went to was The Rock and Roll event. This was very memorable because I was given the opportunity to dance battle their mascot, Kid Fit. Unfortunately, Kid Fit utterly destroyed me on the dance floor. After that, I swore I would overcome his sick moves and dope rhythm next year. IWell, my two paragraphs are up. Will I ever be able to overcome Kid Fit?

Hey Penguins! My name is Jessica Lee and I will be serving as Cupertino's president for this upcoming term. As I enter my senior year, I have realized, through college app essays, how big of an impact Key Club made on my high school experience. Back as a freshman, I joined tons of clubs, but Key Club was really the only one that I stayed in. I attended a few service events, but when Fall Rally North season came up, I finally realized how large Key Club is. Going from a member to Project Chair, and finally to President, I have definitely learned a lot about leadership and made tons of lasting friendships with Key Clubbers from different cities. I will truly miss being in Key Club, so I ask for all of 34 South to make this year an amazing year! More on a personal level, I love drinking boba, eating ramen, traveling, listening to KPOP, and watching Korean dramas, so if you ever want to talk about any bands, definitely hit me up!! LTG Albert calls me a boba addict, and I'll admit I am, haha. I wish the best of luck to all of our fellow Penguins, current and new ones. I hope that we can all have a great term, and I would love to meet all of you! If you ever want to talk to me about Key Club, or anything in general, please don't hesitate to contact me!

Cupertino Relay For LIfe By William Suy The Cupertino Relay for Life event was quite the experience. We came in and realized that there were not many things to do that the administrators needed. But as a dutiful Key Clubber, Albert and I decided to walk around asking people for help left and right, and honestly, the best feeling was getting an answer from other people saying 'Oh yes, we do need help. Here, you can do...' Along with the things that we did such as restocking on ice and water, helping set the bags for the luminari festival, rearranging the bags so it doesn't fall over, making a Breast cancer symbol with plastic cups on the fence, it was overall a busy and really fun day hanging out with fellow Key Clubbers, bonding with each other, and mostly, meeting other people from other areas and schools. So all in all, the Cupertino Relay for Life event was one of the most tiring, fun, and bondable experience that I've gone to.
