BBQ at Stevenson House

Written by Kristen Yee (Gunn) Palo Alto penguins from Gunn and Paly Key Clubs helped out at Stevenson House, which offers affordable housing for low-income seniors, at a barbecue hosted at Unitarian Universalist Church on September 10. Volunteers helped cut vegetables to make salads, cooked beans, and served burgers, hot dogs, and refreshments to seniors. Despite the fact that some of the seniors didn’t speak fluent English, they all managed to express their gratitude for the volunteers and the help they provided with smiles and laughter. In my opinion, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a smile on the faces of those who are gracious for the services that we Key Clubbers provided.

Walk and Run “It was fun coming back to volunteer again; it brought back a lot of memories. I thought the turnout this year was even bigger than last year, and it was interesting to see familiar faces running.” —Sean Lin (Gunn)

Key Clubbers participates in Abilities United fundraising event

Redwood City Aquathon Key Clubbers attended an event in Redwood City on Saturday, September 17th. Aquathon is an event held by Abilities United organization. It is a fundraising event that benefits children and adults with development and disability issues. People from all over the Bay Area formed teams and swam a 30 minute relay to raise money. Key Clubbers from Gunn and Palo Alto arrived early in the morning to help set up tables, parking, and registration. Later on in the day, Key Clubbers helped out as lap recorders. The coordinators also rewarded the volunteers with a table full of delicious snacks: cakes, granola bars, fruits, water, and coffee.

GUESS WHO SAID IT? “Adults like it when you sound sweet and genuine, like a songbird. Even though people hate songbirds, but they still like it because they sound beautiful. That’s how you get people to like you. You don’t want to sound like a murderous crow. Nobody likes crows; they are annoying and ugly. Be the songbird.”
