FROM THE LTG

ALOHA PENGUINS, I hope we all had fun yesterday. I met a part of the Ohana that I had not seen for around five years and I was so excited to see them at Key Club Training Conference, let alone Key Club. I am grateful to Key Club and Kiwanis for helping the Conference to take place. These networks and bonds we create with the Region will motivate us to attend more events such as the upcoming Region Training Conference, Fall Rally North, etc. To see all of the members and to reunite with them is a big part of the motivation for many to attend service events, but let us not forget as the Service Leadership Program of Kiwanis, that we go wholeheartedly, especially over the summer, to lend a hand to those who selflessly commit their time and money to create a positive local and global atmosphere. I am aiming for a 100% participation this summer with the service events with the Palo Alto Kiwanis Family. I will also be traveling to other areas of Division 34 South to participate in their summer service event as well - I hope anyone who’s reading this does too. During the June DCM, I announced recognition for member, officer and club of the month. Congratulations to Khang Tran, William Suy, and Homestead Key Club for winning those awards. Khang is an invaluable member who attends every meeting and most events. I personally admire Khang for his service and time management; this is something I would like to learn from him: his attendance and time commitment. The Officer of the Month for June was Fremont Tech Chair William Suy, who was involved very quickly as soon as he arrived at Fremont High School - his web design with Editor Mark Lu was an incredible resource for members to oversee the activities of Fremont Key Club in a user-friendly interface and a visually pleasing manner. Last but not least, I would like to congratulate Homestead Key Club for raising an unbelievable $1200 for their pizza sales to aid Sunnyvale Kiwanis in sponsoring two Key Clubs. To show your appreciation for our parent clubs, I emphasize that everyone communicate more with their sponsoring Kiwanis Clubs and attend their meetings and thank them more. Write thank you cards, send them flowers, and pay for their meals and attendance. Please enjoy the rest of the newsletter - a culmination of countless hours of work by our Division News Editor Stina Chang. Make sure you thank her and tell her you loved her work at the next DCM!

Sincerely,

@ Manr

This year was the first year Key Clubbers regarded their annual training conference as Key Club Training Conference, instead of Officer Training Conference. Although we were all initially somewhat unsettled by the change, we can all agree now that the new name is more inclusive and closer to the spirit of Key Club! It was a great region-wide kickoff to the ‘16-’17 term and the young LTGs did a great job putting on an educational and fun event at the traditional Manresa State Beach. Although the sand was burning by the end

of the day, the passion for Key Club burned even stronger. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and new friendships as Key Clubbers made their way through the different workshops (ranging from fundraising tips to “safekey”), lined up for hot dogs and snacks, checked off their KCTC bucket lists, and concluded the day with a lighthearted sandcastle competition for PTP—or should I say, “burying each other in the sand as mermaids” competition? See you next year, KCTC! —Stephanie Zhang (Gunn)

JUNE DCM

This month's DCM at Manresa State Beach was my first DCM with D34S, and has been one of the most eye opening DCM that I've attended. The updates discussed on each school's club certainly showcases the progress of each club and how amazing a group of teens can do so much for their community. It's a fulfilling feeling to hear about all of the amazing feats each school in the division accomplished along with educating fellow members and officers on the foundations where Key Club lies in and what we do best -- caring. —William Shuy (Fremont)

May 14 @ Willow Glen, San jose Cupertino Key Club

This month Cupertino Key Club volunteered at an event called the Willow Glen 5K on May 14th, 2016. The marathon consisted of people of all ages and the course started and ended at the Willow Glen elementary school wrapping around and through the neighborhoods. We helped construct the course for the runners and lead them in the right direction making sure they followed the correct course. We had many enthusiastic and dedicated purple penguins show up who worked with other volunteers to make sure the event ran smoothly. penguins divided and conquered setting up blockades, steering the runners the right way, and hydrating them as they trekked the strenuous run. After the event ended, we helped gather the materials distributed across the neighborhoods and called it a day, leaving with the bright orange shirt that they let us keep. —Steven Vo (Cupertino)

Hands On the Art Festival May 21 @City of Sunnyvale Homestead key Club The City of Sunnyvale Hands on the Arts Festival is an annual event held at the Sunnyvale Community Center where children get to participate in activities involving and incorporating human creativity and expressiveness in the form of painting, sketching, coloring, music, and dance. Key Clubbers were given a booth to set up, decorate, and operate, selling pizza, soda, and juice to parents and children as they took breaks from their activities. Events like these are what better the relationship between members, officers, and advisors, and the principles conceived within an event like this are central to the foundation of Key Club. —Mark Lu (Homestead)

Rinconada Park Gardening May 14 @City of Palo ALto Palo Alto Key Club The Rinconada Park Gardening is a monthly event with both the Palo Alto Kiwanis and the friends of the Palo Alto Parks. Palo Alto Key Club members helped Palo Alto Kiwanian Mr. Marty Deggeller prune roses and other bushes around the park. — Sean Romeo (Paly)
