A Special Place

A Letter from the Editor

Summertime brings a sense of freedom. With the beautiful weather, warm temperatures, blue, sunny skies, it makes it so easy to get up, get out, and start exploring this incredible place we live here in the Inland Northwest.

There’s truly no better time than summer in the Inland Northwest! With the mountains, the lakes, the rivers and streams, the prairies … what more could you ask for? From a picnic on the river to a boat ride on the lake, to hiking the many trails or biking the Hiawatha Trail, you can’t help but feel blessed. From the North Idaho Panhandle into Spokane, you truly get a taste of mountain paradise.

As fall makes its debut, the air turns crisp, the leaves begin to change, and it truly is a sight to be seen. Outdoor adventure continues, along with many autumn-inspired happenings to celebrate the season.

Those of us who live here know how blessed we are to call this place home, and our paradise continues to be discovered by people from all across the country who want a better life for themselves and their loved ones. Though we may notice more traffic and road work, and yes, a lot more building, we should remember that most everyone here—those born here and those new—want to enjoy the same simple pleasures: the beauty of this place and the ample outdoor opportunities it provides. It’s quieter here, bringing a sense of peace in an otherwise busy, noisy world.

In each issue of REAL Northwest Living, it is important for us to share just a glimpse of the beauty that resides here. We are honored to serve our communities and share stories about the people, the places, the arts, entertainment and events—and much more!

To those who live here, you already know how special it is here. For those visiting, we hope you enjoy this place we all live, work and play as much as we do.

FINANCIAL FOCUS CAN YOU COUNT ON SOCIAL SECURITY? 477100 Hwy 95, Suite B, Ponderay, ID Ken.Wood@edwardjones.com 208.255.2613 | EdwardJones.com Member SIPC 24

If you’re getting closer to retirement, you might be thinking more about Social Security. Specifically, can you count on it to contribute part of the income you’ll need as a retiree?

There’s been an increase in alarming language surrounding the solvency of Social Security, but in reality, its prospects are not nearly as gloomy as you might have heard.

Here’s the story: Under current law, Social Security is estimated to exhaust its trust funds by 2035, after which benefits could be cut by 20 percent, according to the 2022 Social Security Trustees report. However, the large cost of living adjustment (COLA) (8.7 percent) for 2023 could cause the trust funds to use up their resources sooner.

But this outlook may represent a worst-case scenario. For one thing, the cost of the 2023 COLA will be somewhat offset by higher taxes on workers contributing to Social Security. The maximum amount of earnings subject to the 6.2 percent Social Security tax jumped from $147,000 in 2022 to $160,200 in 2023. And in looking down the road, further increases in this earnings cap may also help reduce the gap in the trust funds. Increasing the payroll tax is another possibility for boosting funding to Social Security.

• Move it to your new employer’s plan

6-month

2.55

1-year 2.75 2-year 3.00

• Roll it over to an Individual Retirement Account (IRA)

And here’s a political reality: Social Security is a popular program, and it’s unlikely that any future Congress wants to be blamed for reducing benefits. Of course, there are no guarantees, but it seems fair to say that you can reasonably expect some benefits from Social Security when you retire.

• Cash out the account subject to early withdrawal penalties We can talk through

But perhaps the bigger issue is just how much you should depend on Social Security for your retirement income. On average, Social Security benefits will provide about 30 percent of a beneficiary’s preretirement earnings, according to the Social Security Administration. But the higher your earnings before you retire, the lower the percentage that will be replaced by Social Security.

Still, you’ll want to maximize the benefits that are available to you—and that means deciding when to start taking Social Security. You can begin as early as 62, but your monthly payments could be as much as 30 percent lower than your normal (or “full”) retirement age, which will likely be between 66 and 67.

Even if you were to wait until your full retirement age before collecting Social Security, you’ll also need to draw on other sources of funding. So, while you are still working, it’s a good idea to keep contributing to your IRA and 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan.

The amount you contribute should depend on your overall financial strategy and your financial needs, so, for example, you probably shouldn’t put so much into your retirement accounts that you feel significant stress in your monthly cash flow. But when you do get a chance to invest more in these accounts, such as when your salary goes up, you may want to take advantage of the opportunity.

Ultimately, you should be able to count on Social Security as part of your retirement income. You may want to consult with a financial professional to determine when taking Social Security makes the most sense for you and how you can also get the most from your other retirement accounts. You’ll want a retirement income strategy that’s built for the long run.

An Investment in Your Future

Todd Kaufman, Craig Cozad and Derick Driggs all grew up in North Idaho. Todd and Craig, both entrepreneurs, are the owners of a large asphalt and concrete company in Coeur d’Alene, while Derick’s background is in banking and finance. Together, the three formed the CDA Development team, acquiring several pieces of land throughout North Idaho, with numerous projects underway in various phases—from apartments, storage facilities and commercial properties to a riverfront RV park.

In 2022, they established Big Toy Condos. Located in Sandpoint on Schweitzer Cutoff Road, the vision for the property was originally intended to be a multifamily housing project. “However, due to the proximity to the airport, that was ultimately not an option,” shares Derick. “The project had to be more of an industrial use with low occupancy to be compatible with the airport and surrounding uses. This steered us into the storage/warehousing concept. Given the unique communities within the area, such as Schweitzer, Dover and the Idaho Club, we felt that people living in those areas needed their own space to accommodate their toys, projects and storage needs.” Thus, Big Toy Condos was born.

This upscale storage facility is unlike any other in the area, primarily due to its ownership aspect, as each unit can be individually purchased as an investment, and the owners have the right to customize their units how they choose to best meet their needs—add a loft, floor coating, ceiling fan, car lift, smart technology, shelving, and for the premier units, the option of adding a bathroom and even a kitchenette! In addition, all units are heated and insulated with 60-amp power, and the property features security cameras and 24/7 gated access.

AND THERE’S MORE! Owners can also take advantage of the private clubhouse (with Wi-Fi) featuring a living room with big-screen TV, kitchen/bar, bathrooms, showers, workout room, and meeting room to host gatherings or business meetings. Other site amenities include basketball and pickleball courts, outdoor covered seating with a gas fireplace, and a wash pad.

With a total of 107 condos, 60 units are currently still available, with varying unit types and pricing.

(conceptual rendering)

“Anyone can benefit from ownership in Big Toy Condos—from the person who needs to store their toys to a business that needs warehouse space,” affirms Derick. “Big Toy Condos is a long-term real-estate investment with the ability for future capital growth.”

If you’re looking for a home to store your boat and PWCs, RV and cars, ATVs and UTVs, or work tools and materials, Big Toy Condos is the perfect solution.

Stunning New Ridge-Side Homes Overlooking the COLUMBIA RIVER

The height of luxury living is now selling at Crescent Ridge

Just a two-and-a-half-hour drive west on I-90 is where you will discover Crescent Bar, Washington, home to Crescent Ridge—Central Washington’s ultimate playground. Perched along the Columbia River, Crescent Ridge brings a new and elevated way of living to the region, offering expansive river-view homes complete with floor-toceiling windows, gourmet chef’s kitchens, spa-like primary suites, and oversized garages. Whether seeking adventure or retreat, Crescent Ridge is an enticing home away from home.

A nod to the region’s vibrant wineries, the newly released Vineyard neighborhood boasts awe-inspiring views, spacious lots, and convenient walking-distance access to the essential Crescent Bar amenities such as the boat launch, casual golf, dining, as well as a future amenity core including a resort-style pool, fitness center, on-site tasting room, and an indoor-outdoor entertainment venue. Offered in two unique configurations, homes are clean and contemporary in design, with generous single-level floor plans starting from 2,000 to over 2,800 square feet. Each features one of three distinct finish palettes. Prices start at $1.7 million.

“What sets Crescent Ridge apart from other communities is its setting,” affirms Melissa Camp, Crescent Ridge sales director.

“We are fortunate to sit right up against magnificent 500-foot basalt cliffs and overlook the incredible Columbia River. The proximity of Crescent Ridge to the excitement of Crescent Bar is unparalleled, and these homes truly make adventuring easy. For example, each home includes oversized garages to house your boats, UTVs, golf carts, and gear. Other standout features that our buyers have really been responding to are the home automation system, dual sets of washer and dryers in most homes, sizable living areas fit for entertaining, and spacious wrap-around covered patios.”

With access to the vast array of local amenities, Melissa notes that there is much excitement surrounding the wine tasting and events venue that will be complete by spring 2024. “This building will become the hub of the Crescent Ridge community. We couldn’t be more excited to watch the progress unfold over these coming months.”

The Vineyard has just introduced its first phase of homes and is now selling for summer move-ins. For those wanting to learn more about Crescent Ridge’s available inventory or would like to schedule a private tour, you can reach out to their dedicated sales team by calling 509.787.0500 or emailing sales@crescentridgeresort.com.

Freedom and prosperity have been foundational components of the American Dream for generations, and to many, owning a home is an important milestone in achieving that dream. The feeling of having a piece of land that is yours, four walls, and a roof to hold and protect your family is unparalleled.

Reaching the goal of homeownership provides stability and connections to the community and builds financial wealth over time. It’s also one of the most significant investments you’ll make in your lifetime—both in your future and financially.

You want to choose a home that meets the needs of your current lifestyle, stage of life, and any future goals you have for yourself and your family. The journey to and the process of buying a house is unique for each buyer. A growing family has different needs than an empty nester

looking to downsize. A single parent desires vastly different features than a new retiree.

Whether you’re a first-time home buyer or a seasoned veteran, the process can be overwhelming. One of the best first steps is finding an experienced Realtor— they have the training and knowledge to walk you through the process, give you the ins and outs of the neighborhood, and get down to the nitty-gritty details to help you make an informed decision. For this reason, we’ve turned to the professionals—real estate broker Jackie Suarez of Century 21 RiverStone, Eric Skinner, owner and associate broker at Skinner & Stevens Properties, and real estate agent Brenda Burk of Brenda Burk Group, Coldwell Banker Schneidmiller Realty— for their insight to help clear up the sometimes muddy process of purchasing a home.

Important factors to consider when looking to buy your next home
30 REAL NORTHWEST LIVING

Make a list.

Most people considering buying a home have imagined their “perfect” house. For some, it’s a brick house with a white picket fence, while others crave a low-maintenance condo in the city— either way, it’s likely you have more non-negotiables than you initially realize.

Make a list. Have each person involved in buying the home and who will be living in the home make a list of the features they most want and things they truly need. Then you can review the list—maybe drop the wall-to-wall trampoline room requested by your 7-year-old—and rank the features by importance. Doing this will help narrow down properties during your search and keep you focused as you visit potential properties.

Don’t overlook MUST-HAVE features.

As potential buyers start viewing homes, they can quickly get distracted by the beautiful countertops and professionally staged presentation. Relying on an imagined picture in your head can lead to overlooking must-have features. Jackie says, “Many times, you’ll sense whether a home is the right size, layout and style for you. When it hits all of the marks, focus on things you don’t see right away. Are the systems updated or wellmaintained? How long do you anticipate you will be in this home, and will it still satisfy you in the long-term?” There’s nothing worse than falling in love with a house only to remember later that you swore you’d never share a closet with your spouse again.

Relying on an imagined picture in your head can lead to overlooking must-have features.

Location. Location. Location.

“Location, location, location” is a common phrase in real estate. Besides being in an area where you want to live, the location is also directly linked to the current and future home value. The features that determine what constitutes a good location differ for each home buyer, but there are some generally accepted objective factors to consider. The location determines which schools your children will attend, how long your commute to work will be, and which community you will be involved with daily. Brenda also says the following should be addressed when looking at a home’s location: “Schools, health care, churches, access to public parks, public water, zoning, CC&R (covenants, conditions and restrictions), flight pattern, proximity to commercial business or use, and future development in the area.”

REAL NORTHWEST LIVING 35

Research the area.

Researching an area and working with a knowledgeable Realtor also helps when evaluating neighborhoods. Take a walk in the neighborhood and talk to people who live there. This will help you get a feel for the mood of a neighborhood but can also provide invaluable insight into real-time issues or benefits of the neighborhood. Another factor to consider are the future plans for the area. New construction neighborhoods are popping up all over—depending on your needs, you may want to hold out for one of the new builds, or you might not want to buy right next to a future construction site. “Visit the property during different times of day to learn about traffic, noise or odors and look at surrounding properties to see if any changes are planned such as zoning, highway or road widening that may affect the property,” Jackie says. You should also consider the crime in the area, if there are any benefits such as recreation facilities, and if there are HOA dues that will affect your monthly payment.

Consider the lot.

Remember, your location also includes the lot on which the home stands. You can remodel and renovate a house to your every specification, but the lot will remain the same. Consider the lot location and size carefully when viewing homes. Does it get enough sunlight? Will the driveway be difficult to navigate when it snows? Is the yard large enough for your kids and dog to run around? Are you prepared for the amount of maintenance needed for this size yard?

“I think, oftentimes, folks fall in love with something about a property without thinking as much about how their daily life fits in with the property,” shares Eric. “Things like snow removal, winter sun locations and ease of lifestyle while living on

Jackie also tells potential buyers, “Research whether the land is in a flood zone or wetlands area and whether there are easements for others to cross over the property. If the data is not readily available to you, your real estate agent should know where to help you find it. If anything about the location or the lot seems concerning or feels like a compromise to you, don’t hesitate to walk away. It will be easier to find another property in a better location or lot than to live with frustrations that could’ve been avoided.

Know your budget and the market.

It is imperative to know your budget and the market. While this sounds simple enough, it can be a complex process. You need a clear picture of your finances to determine a down payment amount and the maximum mortgage payment you can afford. Your real estate team can help review various mortgage payment scenarios and point out sleeper costs, including HOA dues, homeowner’s insurance, and property taxes.

Technology in the new age.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way homes are bought and sold. Using technology became the norm, popularizing remote home buying based on video walk-throughs. Oftentimes the first chance a buyer had to go inside a home was when they began moving in. As Brenda says, “The best policy is to visit the home. If not, you need a trusted Realtor to be your eyes, ears and nose for a true and acceptable picture of the property. Virtual tours should always be done by your agent, as the seller’s polished virtual tour is edited to sell.”

The right time to buy.

The market, interest rates and inventory have been rapidly changing over the past few years, but real estate is cyclical. Depending on your circumstances, now might be a great time for you to buy, but not ideal for others. As Jackie explains, “Timing is different for each person. The right time to buy is when you are ready. Make sure your finances are in order and consider whether you need a short-term or long-term investment. Rely on local professionals for advice.”

rowing up, Jackie Suarez’s family lived in various places throughout her and her five siblings’ childhood. Her father worked for a large corporation, and relocation was standard at the time. “Moving to a different place every few years was normal for us,” she recalls. These memories help her empathize with her clients during their time of transition.Nurturing relationships are essential to Jackie and the work she does as an associate broker with Century 21 RiverStone. “I listen, communicate and work hard to help my clients prepare and negotiate to reach their goals. It’s important—that’s why they place their trust in me during their times of change.” she affirms.

Jackie’s first experience working in the real estate world would be as a paralegal for real estate attorneys in North Carolina, where she searched titles and coordinated closings. After that, she became a title officer and branch manager for a title insurance company. This experience formed the basis for her understanding the mechanics of negotiating and closing real estate transactions.

In 1999, Jackie and her husband Carlos jumped at the chance to relocate to North Idaho with his employer. “Being a real estate agent was the natural next step for me,” Jackie recalls. “In 2000, I got my license and never looked back. Now I get to help people buy and sell real estate, and it’s very gratifying work.”

As a real estate broker for more than two decades selling throughout North Idaho, Jackie has been voted Sandpoint’s Finest Realtor® 2017 through 2022 and offers her clients a unique perspective on the ever-changing real estate market, as she brings her years of knowledge and expertise home.

In May 2022, when Christian Fioravanti quit his full-time job to join the staff at Make a Difference (MAD) Energy as the chief marketing officer, he knew that—at least for the time being—his work would be completely pro bono.

And Christian was not alone. Multiple founding members of the MAD staff came to the organization without the expectation of a paycheck. They chose this because they believe in the mission of the organization, and they realize its potential to impact the world.

"Every single person here really has a dedication to the mission first," Christian affirmed. "We are not here for a job or job security. We are not here to get a paycheck and just do our tasks each day. Everyone here is dedicated to helping the world and making a difference."

With world-class energy experts in leadership positions, a network of subsidiary companies around the world and teams of researchers and scientists developing clean energy solutions, MAD Energy finds itself on the bleeding edge of some of the most innovative clean energy technologies in existence today.

In its three years of existence, MAD has raised $100 million in investment funding and created strategic partnerships across the globe, setting in motion the initial phases of the organization's mission to produce "clean, abundant and affordable energy for the world."

Admittedly, many of MAD's ambitions might sound grand and wide-ranging, but that was the emphasis from the beginning, according to Christian.

Could the next billion-dollar business be based in Sandpoint, Idaho?

REAL NORTHWEST LIVING 45
Learn
how MAD Energy is making a difference in the clean energy sector worldwide.

"We love the idea of Sandpoint, Idaho, being the headquarters for a company that is going to impact the world," Christian stated. "The comparison to Elon Musk, Starlink, and some of the big things that he is doing … We believe a company like that—like a SpaceX –can be here in Sandpoint. And that's MAD."

MAD Energy was founded in February 2020 by successful international attorney and businessman George Wentz.

Having operated in the energy sector for more than 40 years and represented some of the world's largest oil and gas companies, George has developed a knack for looking beyond the surface level and addressing the root challenges humanity faces today regarding energy production and distribution.

Access to energy can impact everything from food production to currency fluctuation. According to a recent study conducted by Our World Data, more than 750 million people still do not have access to electricity today, and 3 billion—or 40 percent of the world's population—have no access to clean fuels for cooking.

“We can do so much better,” Christian remarked. “A lot of us, if you look back in time, always imagined that in 2023 we’d have maybe flying cars by now. We assumed all of these basic human problems would’ve been long gone. And yet, here we are in 2023 with things being much worse in certain cases than they were previously.”

But MAD's philosophy is not to settle for finger pointing and arguing about who is to blame for these global issues. Conversely, for George,

Christian and the entire team at MAD, finding solutions that provide abundant and affordable energy to individuals around the globe is at the heart of everything they do.

"So, how do you solve some of these challenges for the world?" Christian interjected. "Of course, they are big challenges—it’s a tall order—but there are definitely people in positions that can make a difference and begin to shift things for humanity."

Practically speaking, MAD is attempting to solve some of these largescale issues by funding research teams and developing strategic partnerships that allow for increased creation and distribution of clean energy throughout the world.

"We are developing both large infrastructure energy projects while at the same time developing research and development technologies that have the potential to really impact the people of this world in a big way," Christian added.

One of these projects currently being negotiated and set into motion is a MAD subsidiary company called Firebird LNG, which is aiming to plant a liquefied natural gas (LNG) site in the resource-rich Guyana-Suriname Basin.

to begin construction on the 1,500-hectare site that will eventually house one of the first greenfield LNG facilities in the world.

"We are very close to hitting the key milestones to kick off that whole project off and to not only help lift up the people of Suriname and bring them to a first-world status very quickly because of this single project," Christian described, "but we are also going to be aiding Europe, which is in desperate need of natural gas."

Another strategic partnership that MAD sees as a primary fixture in achieving its goals moving forward is with ADACEN, a next-generation data center operator based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, that provides data encryption and security for the United States and international governments as well as commercial companies worldwide.

with MAD, making MAD Energy the organization's sole Power Integrator as it begins to roll out a global web of datacenter infrastructure.

A third, and possibly the most intriguing, project that MAD is currently working toward is developing a new technology designed to allow for wireless energy transmission based on the ideas of Nikola Tesla.

"MAD Energy is going to be the company that commercializes modern-day Nikola Tesla wireless energy transmission towers," Christian said. "And we are going to be able to bring safe energy and data transmission to the world."

While the notion sounds futuristic and bold, scientists— working in partnership with MAD—are currently in the research and development phase of a prototype tower in Milford, Texas, and they believe this technology legitimately

has the potential to change the lives of billions of people around the world.

"What it ultimately means is we can take power from anywhere—whether it’s geothermal or it’s some other source— and we can transmit it all over the globe," Christian explained. "All these different countries, island nations, very poor areas of the world, they [could then] receive access to very inexpensive energy, which could heavily reduce their power bills and overall cost of living."

Ultimately, in everything MAD does, the organization's primary goal is to put the power back into the hands of the people. One primary way MAD accomplishes this goal is by funding itself entirely through retail and accredited investors.

"Not only is MAD funded by the people—because we wanted to bring the people in to [reap] the reward that comes from this [instead of] big oil companies or Wall Street," Christian said, "but we also plan to allow for investments into our subsidiary companies, as well, by both retail and accredited investors."

When MAD conducted its initial retail raise last year, the organization gave common people the ability to invest in the company, setting the minimum investment at just $500. The response was incredible, according to Christian, as more than 400 individuals invested.

"That is pretty exciting to me because to this day, [many of] those people still have no idea exactly what they have put their money into from the standpoint of what I believe [MAD] will ultimately become and what is in store for them as we begin to see positive revenue coming into the company," Christian said.

As MAD continues furthering its global clean energy projects, the organization hopes to encourage prosperity in North Idaho, North Africa and everywhere in between.

"Something very special is being done here [at MAD]," Christian noted. "And it is the coolest thing ever, to me, that it's headquartered in Sandpoint, Idaho, because I look forward to seeing some of those external benefits supporting this area because of the success of this company.

What’s Really

the Scoop with Native Plants

Native plants are all the rage, and here’s why

My husband, Eric, and I have owned New Leaf Nursery in Hayden, Idaho, for nearly 30 years. Through the knowledge I have gained by owning a large garden center, and by being an avid gardener myself, I have learned that native plants and trees can not only create unique and interesting landscapes, but much of their true merit lies in the benefits they provide to our environment. From sculpted formal spaces, to a wild open meadow, your selections of native plants can provide a wealth of colors, textures, heights and bloom times in your spaces!

But why is it so important to consider native plants in your landscape? Native plants help our environment in so many ways! They take less water, less fertilizer and, most importantly, less pesticides. They help prevent water runoff and improve our air quality. They decrease pollution by reducing the need for mowers and other equipment. They have the ability to store excess carbon, and they provide habitats for pollinators. Plus, they are low maintenance, giving you more time to enjoy the beauty they provide.

In North Idaho, and Eastern Washington, we have a great number of native plants and trees. One of my favorites is the Western White Pine, which happens to be the state tree of Idaho. They are known for their long-elegant needles, and the cones they produce are stunning for use in holiday décor or can provide the perfect kindling.

Rocky Mountain Maples, Western Larch and Ponderosa Pines are other favorites to add color and interesting textures to your landscape. The maples show their green leaves through the summer, and as fall approaches, those leaves can turn to fiery shades of red, orange and yellow, putting on an amazing show of color for you and your neighborhood.

The Western Larch often blends in with their evergreen neighbors until fall, when their needles turn yellow, and then drop. In spring, buds on their branches burst with soft new neon-green needles.

The Ponderosa Pine are giants, growing sometimes over 200-feet tall with a trunk that measures 3 to 4 feet across. If you believe in planting a tree for future generations to enjoy, the Ponderosas are perfect for you!

One final word on native plants, in addition to all the other benefits: Native plants can also benefit local wildlife. According to our friends at The Audubon Society, native plants provide nectar for pollinators including hummingbirds, native bees, butterflies, moths and bats. They provide protective shelter for many mammals. The native nuts, seeds and fruits produced by these plants offer essential foods for all forms of wildlife. CREATIVE VERVE

An introduction of Lori Salisbury, painter extraordinaire

60
“Let the artists of the world paint their visions out among the stars.”

Iarrived at the mountain retreat and home of world-renown artist and sculptor, Lori Salisbury, to conduct this interview and was greeted by the happy young pup, held in restraint by her master. It had just started raining again, but this beautiful secluded acreage was no less pretty. I was quickly ushered into a whimsical fairytale of a cabin through a foyer of large, exquisite paintings to a kitchen table, where Lori graciously poured us each a fine tea and sat down for the ensuing conversation. The dog quickly became friendly enough to lay its head on my shoe while we talked.

Stepping past the cordialities, I asked, sweeping my hand across the room, “How did all this begin?”

“It began with my Gramma; she and Grandpa Carlson lived above their clothing store and also had a cabin in the forest near Pocatello, where she spent time on the weekends. She loved painting in watercolors and had no fear about letting me try too. I was only 6, and though water colors were sloppy and much too fluid for a child beginner, I took to it like it belonged to me.

“By the time I was a teenager, I was painting in oils and showing at an art show with many other artists. A woman walked up to one of my paintings and said, ‘How did that wolf get there? There are no tracks in the snow!’ I hadn’t thought of that. But I took note and from that point on I painted tracks where they belonged!

“What that person pointed out was a gift, to me,” Lori said. “From that day on, I gave every animal I painted a way in and a way out.”

How many young potentials are destroyed by a casual comment pointing out a flaw, I wondered; but not this lady, who had determined at the age of 6, sitting by her grandmother, that she wanted to be a painter for the rest of her life.

In the presence of her very mature talent, I asked, “How do you achieve such depth in your massive snow scenes; the great expanse in your clouds? These dramatic scenes are so powerfully accurate, so alive and living! How do you do it? I see mountains, clouds, snow, even skies and water scenes, forests and fields … all are dimensionally correct, full of natural tones and right colors: all manifested in the controlled light from an imaginary experience. I sculpt with light and dark shades to create the same illusion in 3D.”

She shrugged, smiled, and explained the impossible task, “The closer the scenes get to the viewer, the darker and more vivid the illusion has to be. It’s a critical understanding that grows in you while painting 2 dimensions from a 3-dimensional world. It’s painting,” she added. “I’ve learned how to build the correct illusions over a long period of painting. It has taken a long time to develop techniques that solve various problems found in painting. How I place the animal is just one of those solutions.”

She’s not mimicking anyone. She is not painting from photographs. She doesn’t paint to please other people. She paints to bring out the inner dimensions of understanding herself and the world around her. This unique approach has given rise to an indomitable spirit where only she can please herself with the result.

“I am painting from my heart, not trying to please anybody.” When she explained that, I recognized the source of the intrigue that brought me to her paintings in the first hours of discovery. “I’m just bringing the night dreams and experiences I have to the canvas … sometimes over a long stretch of time. I may get a vision of what to paint, but many times it evolves during the process. I’m not painting for other people.

“Maybe it’s a latent need others have, but I paint for myself. I have to please me, and that makes me diligent. A story painting, like some you see here, may take years to come out. Dreams are never predetermined. They just happen. And that is what brings most of my art to canvas and clay. But yes, I do see the image in my head before I start.

“One thing I realize is important is that we are the only protectors of this

environment for the next generation. I get really involved in every aspect of protecting Mother Nature and the wild animals that inhabit the natural realms. It’s what my work is really about: protecting nature and the many lovely creatures that live in it.”

It’s obvious when you listen to Lori talk about her work not being predetermined, because it certainly is not. She does not paint from an outline. Her images are born in the emotional, sometimes wise center of her being. They come from a place where she sees and feels these paintings.

“I’ve owned galleries in Rocky Mountain National Park, in Southern Colorado, and in places like that, along with artists of similar interests,” she explained. “Our work changed the outlook of a lot of people. We did fundraisers for wolves and injured birds of prey, so many people became more sensitive and outspoken in recognizing the beauty and the vital importance of its many creatures. My favorite quote is: ‘We have not inherited this Earth but are borrowing it from our unborn children’ by Chief Joseph Chasing Horse.

“I haven’t done that now for quite a long time, probably got a bit burned out from all the shows and attention they required. I was raising three daughters by myself during most of that time in Colorado. But I was painting to bring awareness to the natural world, painting about the importance of balance in the natural world.

“Right now, my art is teaching the fine art of style and knowledge. I have much to give too. I already have retreat cabins in the woods, with parklike pathways and trails established. And I believe more cabins are coming. I want to be the host of an artists’ collective and hold week-long retreats. The cabins would be the night quarters for artists who come here. I can even host music and writers’ retreats the same way. It’s all art!”

Innovation in tough times is not uncommon, but it is abundant in the hearts of many creative people like Lori. This is a woman who raised three daughters during most of her advancing early days of art and did it all from being a persistent, never-give-up artist. That’s part of the road to mastery.

In the beginning, for Lori, there were plenty of people who advised otherwise … she should get a job. But that’s almost an insult to someone who, from the age of 6, knew for a fact where she was going in life and never wavered from the vision, never hesitated, never considered failure. She knew who she was, and she knew where she was going. The rest of the challenge was just getting there. Is it any wonder why she loves an appreciative audience and has many long-time, loyal and lasting friends from her lifetime of pushing the dreams forward?

As an artist, Lori shares she loves the isolation of a private place, “a studio of solitude” as she refers to her home in the woods. For her, it is the sanctuary that gives light to the dreams and experiences and understandings she so needs to express. “All I hear up here is the songs of the birds, the breeze through the needles and leaves of the trees, and the creek that flows through my property. If I’m going to be inside, I want a big room with large windows that allow nature to come in and be part of me and whoever else is here.”

When she realizes that her efforts have contributed in a positive way to the advancement of understanding the importance of preservation of the natural realms, she is most happy with her journey!

Regarding where she works as a painter and sculptor, she says, “My work environment is very important. I can’t and won’t paint in a basement, not even a closed room or office. I need to be up and out, outside under a mosquito net if necessary.”

her unique EXPRESSION is full of STORY

But then she adds, “Funny, the weather affects me. I get motivated by weather, the full moon, the drama found on stormy nights and sometimes days. If it’s sunny and warm, I just want to walk and be in the mountains and play in the sun. Good weather is less motivating for me than the drama of storms and night skies.”

One of her paintings is that of a baby bear. She describes it as “a happy little bear watching the butterfly, titled Heaven on Earth. It’s a three-part series. “I like to take what I’ve done in some of my paintings and bring them into the 3-dimensional reality of sculptured portrayal, featuring Geronimo, the Baby Bear and the Butterfly.”

In her yard, the three paintings that make the story of Heaven on Earth are replicated in a large 3-dimensional sculpture.

“Adding sculptures of some of these paintings became a curious method for marketing, as it brought, of course, a much higher dollar to the sale of a specific story painting,” she added.

Her incredible painting of the Native American warrior came

from an old black and white photo. She brought him to life in the bright red colors and blacks that make him truly stand out. The Native from the Cosmos, she saw him first in her imagination. Lori lived in Montana during that time and was drawn to the Crow Indian Reservation and its people, where she came across that old photo.

“When I asked where his people came from, he pointed up and said, “We are Pleiadeans, a people from the stars.”

Thus, a fine arts painting of the Indian brave was born from a personal experience.

This is an example of the “Creative Verve,” the title I’ve given this article. It is the immediate, almost wild intuitive response to a treasured moment of experience, where an artist sees beyond his or herself into a vision that manifests a far more complete and lasting expression of a perceived reality. It is the animated spirit of an interaction that manifests into a lasting image where doubt does not exist. It is Creative Verve that ignites a painting, that brings into the imagination a vision that first must come forth,

66 REAL NORTHWEST LIVING

and second, be put to canvas, and perhaps stretched into a 3D sculpture in clay before being solidified in time by casting it to bronze, thereby preserving a moment of realization for many generations to ponder.

“The paintings are like my children; I don’t want to give them up,” she admits, “but I know they also have their own journey, like that old photo, which came to life for me.”

In my mind, as the writer of this interview, a master artist of uniquely painted stories like Lori Salisbury justifiably commands a high price for her work, not only because some of it does take years to accomplish, but also because her unique expression is full of story in many samples. Like a star athlete, she deserves what she’s achieved.

Lori’s engaging exploration of art, and its means to life, is a story of a very fine artist who started uncommonly young, thanks to the influence and encouragement of “Gramma Carlson,” her most influential mentor. Lori’s life should be a movie of a woman who overcame many obstacles found along the way, overcoming by

holding on with a fierce focus, like a Crow warrior, like a Pleiadean, regarding the purpose of her journey: that being primarily to help others become aware of the precious state of our natural world. To this, Lori Salisbury has blossomed into a storyteller whose canvases have established a lasting effect toward the preservation of our natural world, helping people realize the living reality that exists all around an otherwise often indifferent humanity.

“We all have a responsibility to our children, and all generations that might follow, to preserve what is wild and free. Let the artists of the world paint their visions out among the stars. We are like the Pleiadeans; I feel sometimes I am from the stars also. We are stewards, and the works of our art emanated from our hearts.”

Artists like Lori Salisbury have a very real purpose for the world; they awaken us to things we never thought about. They are born for it. We should laud them, listen to their stories, analyze their impressions and think about their statements. And we should support them as well.

We are stewards, after all.

Lost Treasures Found

THE ART OF ‘CREATIVE PLACEMAKING’ AT THE CONSERVATORY

“Academically, I am an archaeologist. I am really a treasure hunter, an Indiana Jane,” laughs Karin Wedemeyer, founder and director of the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint. “But artistically, as an opera singer, I’ve chosen to be a Joan of Art.”

The Music Conservatory of Sandpoint (MCS) has been an inspirational asset to the community since opening its doors in 2009. A decade later, in 2019, it would make its new home in the historic old City Hall building on Main Street. “It was our dream to restore this building and to find the original bell that once hung from the bell tower,” remembers Karin. In the spring of 2021, with the help of the Bonner County Historical Society & Museum, the bell was found at an antique store in Spokane. Karin rushed right over, used her crafty negotiating skills, and purchased the one-ton bronze bell from the owner that same day.

“It was a deeply emotional experience when I rang it for the first time,” Karin recalls. After rebuilding the bell tower and reinforcing the roof, the bell will be lifted back up and returned to its rightful place. (Currently the bell can be found at the museum, out front in Lakeview Park.)

“Creative placemaking” is an integral part of the conservatory, living in a historic building and capturing its historic charm and glory as a home/shelter for their talented and inspiring students

and staff. This includes restoring and preserving the architectural integrity of the building. Finding the bell was just the beginning of unearthing historic treasures.

They also discovered, with the help of the museum and local historian Nancy Renk, articles about the existence of a music conservatory in downtown Sandpoint dating back to 1908. “We struck gold!” Karin recalls saying when first hearing the news. “We found this to be absolutely astounding—considering that at that time there may have been just a handful of conservatories, if that, in the United States.”

In April of 2023, the excitement continued, as Karin was contacted and told that the original announcement of the opening of the Conservatory of Music on September 21, 1908, appeared in the form of a framed document at an estate sale. The Music Conservatory of Music also opened its doors in September—and it is quite possible on the exact date as well.

“It is also worth mentioning that an opera singer, Olivia Dahl, was involved in providing a rare recital of Bel Canto Arias for its opening. As an opera singer, I find this astonishing,” smiles Karin, who believes the ghost of Olivia still seems to be present at the conservatory.

People crave active, dynamic stories, and MCS is one such story

68 REAL NORTHWEST LIVING 68 68
68 REAL NORTHWEST LIVING

that continues to unfold. “There are so many stories in a historic building, from the past and the present, and for MCS, we’re transforming this building into what it used to be—highlighting the stories of the past and the present so they can be told in the future. That’s really what’s happening,” reflects Karin. “We need to look at this building as a treasure and continue to uncover its history and share it with the community.”

If we all pay attention to what’s around us, rather than just glance, wonderful treasures will be discovered. “I want everyone in Sandpoint to become a treasure hunter,” encourages Karin.

MCS’s formula of combining a historic building with a school of performing arts and a vision to expand that model and its philosophy, and its success, is truly rewarding to Karin. “Hearing the students and the staff perform and finding treasures all around me—some of those treasures are our teachers—or artifacts is more than I could have dreamt of.”

Karin invites you to stop in for a tour and listen to the music. And if you are interested in helping with MCS’s Creative Placemaking project, don’t hesitate to come by and see her.

Forward Putting Your Best Face

With a true passion and love for helping others feel confident in their skin, Sarah Hamilton has found fulfillment in helping clients reveal the best version of themselves through her namesake medical aesthetic clinic—Sarah Hamilton FACE.

Offering two locations—one in Liberty Lake, Washington, the other in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho—both are luxurious, custom, state-of-the-art medical aesthetics practices featuring the same unparalleled customer service and top-of-the-line treatments.

Sarah, a select National Allergan and Galderma trainer and speaker, has been an aesthetic nurse injector for 21 years and training other providers for 15. She has brought together a team of incredibly talented and highly trained providers and aestheticians to Sarah Hamilton FACE; you will not find this caliber of experience anywhere else in the area. They also have a certified national laser therapy trainer on staff.

Both locations provide the same amazing treatments and medical-grade skin-care products, offering the most advanced modalities in the industry to treat every skincare concern; treatments like Potenza RF, HERO, MOXI, BBL, and EMSCULPT NEO

(just to name a few). They’ve recently added two new pieces of highly sought-after equipment: Emface (Liberty Lake location only) and Sofwave (Coeur d’Alene and Liberty Lake locations). Both recently launched—and Sarah Hamilton FACE is the only place you will find these technologies across the entire Inland Northwest!

According to Sarah, Emface helps increase muscle density in the muscles in the mid-face that are responsible for lifting the forehead, midface, neck and brows. It also helps decrease wrinkles with radiofrequency. It’s like a non-surgical facelift, with no downtime and no discomfort. It takes four 20-minute treatments, four weeks apart, with optimal results three months after your final treatment. “Emface has really taken off in New York, the East Coast, Seattle, and other bigger cities,” shares Sarah, “and we’re excited to offer it at FACE!”

Sofwave uses ultrasound to tighten and lift the skin, specifically the brows, lower face, jawline and neck. All that is required is two 30-minute treatments, one month apart, and maintenance just once a year after that. Results are seen immediately, with optimal results three months after the second treatment.

If you’re looking to embark on, or continue, the journey of rejuvenating your youth, schedule a consultation, where you will discuss your skincare goals in a relaxed atmosphere, and Sarah and her team will come up with the best treatment plan to meet your needs.

“We’re very much about educating our patients and have the best tools in our beauty toolbox to take care of everyone’s needs,” affirms Sarah. “Whether you’re 18 struggling with acne or 75 concerned about loose skin, we have all the latest and the best technologies in the industry.”

More Than Aesthetic appeal

The effects of aesthetics on your mental and emotional well-being

82 REAL NORTHWEST LIVING
82
REAL NORTHWEST LIVING 83

When I was younger, I remember my grandmother telling me that when we look our best, we feel our best, and when we feel our best, we do our best. For most individuals, the simple act of doing your hair or trimming your mustache can help you to feel more confident and ready to conquer the day. On the flip side, neglecting self-care and lounging in pajamas without a shower all day can result in feelings of low self-worth and esteem. So, what is the science behind the emotions? And is taking pride in your appearance really all that important? Turns out the answer is yes.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, when many were in home isolation and unable to complete their normal self-care routines with hair appointments and spa trips, health care providers began discussing “aesthetic emotions.” This area of psychology examines how an individual’s perceived aesthetic appeal is subjectively felt as either pleasure or displeasure based on whether that individual likes or dislikes their appearance (Menninghaus et al., 2019). Completing activities that make an individual feel more attractive, such as putting on makeup or a nice outfit, can result in a release of feelgood hormones into the bloodstream that carry messages between nerve cells and improve your mood. Dopamine, serotonin, endorphins and oxytocin are all responsible for feelings of euphoria and happiness and are tightly related to aesthetic emotions. The mental health benefits of positive aesthetic emotions include:

IMPROVED QUALITY OF LIFE

When individuals are free of insecurities that once made them feel self-conscious, their social life and leisure activities can become more enjoyable by allowing them to live without the social anxiety of insecurity. Even something as simple as running into the grocery store with greasy, unwashed hair versus a fresh blow-out can make the difference between approaching an old friend you haven’t seen in ages rather than dodging out unnoticed. When social interactions can occur uninhibited, quality of life can be improved.

BETTER SELF-ESTEEM AND CONFIDENCE

Liking what you see in the mirror helps you to feel more confident and comfortable in your skin. Remember the happy hormones we talked about? A surge is released when you are pleased with your reflection. Walking through your day feeling confident can improve productivity, mood, and feelings of well-being.

RENEWED FEELING OF YOUTH

Looking and feeling younger than your actual age can give you a newfound lease on life. A physical change can alter an individual’s mindset, making them more open to possibilities and opportunities that come their way.

Have you ever gotten a fresh haircut that makes you look younger and suddenly you feel unstoppable and ready to take on a challenge that you had been avoiding? Most of us can relate to this on some level, and small acts of self-care that boost your confidence can renew your feeling of youth.

In contrast to feel-good hormones that come with positive feelings about your appearance, the opposite can be true when you feel insecure or dissatisfied with your appearance. Feeling unattractive damages your self-esteem and makes individuals feel genuinely unhappy and less capable.

When the pandemic hit, and I was forced to isolate at home for nearly two months, I quickly found that I no longer did my hair or makeup because I wasn’t going anywhere. I lounged in my sweats all

day instead of getting dressed. My grey hair started to grow out. My Botox wore off and my wrinkles returned. All of these things affected my outward appearance, and while I still knew my own self-worth, I became depressed. I felt less productive and didn’t want to socialize with my small circle of safe contacts. I quickly learned that I don’t do my hair and makeup everyday for anyone else. I do it for ME. As soon as I began taking the time every day to look my best, even though I wasn’t leaving my house and no one besides my immediate family was going to see me, my mood improved and my productivity increased. I felt happier. If there are things you can do that make you feel more confident and happier, no matter how big or small, you should do them.

Everyone’s perception of beauty is different, but identifying what makes you feel your most confident and taking pride in your outward appearance can have a profound impact on your emotional well-being and mood. There is no shame in wanting to put your best face forward so you can live your most confident life.

Menninghaus W, Wagner V, Wassiliwizky E, Schindler I, Hanich J, Jacobsen T, Koelsch S. What are aesthetic emotions? Psychol Rev. 2019 Mar;126(2):171-195. doi: 10.1037/rev0000135. PMID: 30802122.

Ahealthy dose of sun-provided vitamin D is just the beginning of the many ways outdoor activities affect our health—mind, body and soul. Spending time in nature has been shown to help reduce stress hormones, lower blood pressure and boost overall mood. Thankfully, the Inland Northwest is rich with ideal locations for soaking up the sun, catching a breath of fresh air, and taking in the beauty of the summer season.

From biking trails to sparkling lakes, exceptional hikes and parks for the whole family, the Inland Northwest is your summer destination for outdoor activities that can boost your mental and physical health.

MOUNTAIN BIKING AND BIKE TRAILS

From North Idaho to Spokane and beyond, mountain biking trails for all skill levels are ready for the taking. Popular

spots include Spokane’s Riverside State Park and Beacon Hill, offering several highly accessible trails. The Centennial Trail, stretching from Nine Mile Falls past the Washington/ Idaho state line and into Coeur d’Alene, provides 40 miles of paved trail for local bikers to ride and explore close to home. Those ready to take a day trip can enjoy a ride on the popular Hiawatha Trail, known as a scenic, family friendly cruise alongside the Bitterroot Mountains.

TAKE A HIKE

The Inland Northwest is home to a long list of hikes offering unique viewpoints and trails of all lengths, from Spokane’s Mt. Spokane State Park, home to huckleberries and the Quartz Mountain Lookout, to the moderately challenging 8.5-mile Liberty Lake Loop, to North Idaho’s Mineral Ridge and Canfield Mountain Loop.

Spokane’s Palisades Park offers trails with city views contrasted with local wildlife. A visit to Dishman Hills Conservation Area is a great choice for climbers, with manageable all-ages trails that lead to the popular Rocks of Sharon.

Challenge yourself with the Scotchman Peak Trail, located near Clark Fork and known for its significant elevation gain, stellar views, and frequent mountain goat sightings.

LAKESIDE SWIMS

When you’re ready to hit the beach or cool off from the heat, you won’t have to look far to find a lakeside swim in the Inland Northwest. Home to popular lake day locations including beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene, Lake Pend Oreille and Priest Lake, plus more than 70 additional lakes and rivers, the Inland Northwest offers plenty of opportunity to swim, fish, boat and play in the water.

Lake Coeur d’Alene offers a complete experience, with beach volleyball, hiking at Tubbs Hill, the beautiful City Park and the Coeur d’Alene downtown area, all in one walkable location.

Additional spots include Garfield Bay on Lake Pend Oreille, Liberty Lake and Regional Park, Spirit Lake, and more.

Visiting Priest Lake is a worthwhile day trip — just 80 miles northwest of Spokane and often considered “Idaho’s Crown Jewel,” Priest Lake offers endless opportunities for recreation and adventure, including swimming, boating, hiking, golf, and views of the Selkirk Mountains.

PARK PLAY

The Inland Northwest’s unique, centrally located parks offer something for the entire family to enjoy.

At Spokane Valley’s Discovery Playground at Mirabeau Park, kids can enjoy the playground designed to accommodate all ages and abilities, including a summer splash pad, before visiting the nearby portion of the Centennial Trail. Visit on a Friday night from June to September to catch the Spokane Valley Farmer Market!

Additional local highlights include Liberty Lake’s Orchard Park, featuring multiple sport courts, pavilions, a splash pad, and large playground, and Coeur d’Alene City Park, home to the Fort Sherman playground, volleyball and basketball courts, and live music along the lake.

For an outdoor adventure in the Inland Northwest, you won’t have to go far. For a small dose of nature therapy, or an entire day trip adventure, you can hike, bike, walk

In-Home Care You Can Trust

Put your loved one’s care in trusting hands

Owners Brandt and Melissa Weaver are dedicated to doing the right thing, no matter the cost. At AAging Better In-Home Care, the Weavers focus on the clients and caregivers—rather than profit.

“We would much rather see individuals happy, healthy and comfortable instead of lonely and ailing in a facility where statistics have shown a rapid decline in their health and mental status,” states Brandt. “We watched the decline of my grandmother in a facility and saw the level of care she was not receiving and knew we needed to make a difference within our community.”

Brandt’s parents, Bruce and Charlene, founded AAging Better In-Home Care in 2001, with a focus on providing better care for the elderly, allowing them to live a longer, better quality of life at home. Prior to purchasing the business in 2020 from his parents, Brandt was the man behind the scenes working in the finance department and building the IT infrastructure of AAging Better. He joined the company more than two decades ago, and according to his wife Melissa, “His personal drive for this business is to ensure the aging population has the care needed and that professional care aides have a voice in today’s field. Doing the right thing is number one on his priority list, next to his family and his dogs.”

As for Melissa, who co-owns the business with Brandt, she has been a certified pharmacy technician since 2007 and has a background in management. She is currently completing

her last year of school to receive her bachelor’s degree as a respiratory therapist.

“Her personal drive focuses on end-of-life care including oncology and hospice, and ensuring people maintain their dignity while receiving the best care possible during the hardest time of their life,” shares Brandt. “In addition, Melissa has a passion for family, photography, travel, plants and animals.”

At AAging Better, it is their mission to offer personal care services to their clients, in their own homes, which allows folks the opportunity to age in place in their space of personal comfort. These services include bathing and dressing assistance, meal prep, ambulatory services, housekeeping, medication reminders and transportation—as well as companionship.

“We focus on the clients and caregivers. We are also the only agency that answers our phones 24/7 with one of our office staff members—we do not source after-hours or weekend calls to an answering service or a call center,” Brandt affirms.

When it comes to what the couple finds most rewarding about the work they do, Brandt says, “Knowing we are there to help the most vulnerable population.”

If you are searching for the Inland Northwest’s most trusted providers to care for someone you love, look no further than AAging Better In-Home Care. They’re ready to answer the call.

EXPERIENCE THE FLAVORS OF THE INLAND NORTHWEST

Where creativity and flavor flourish

Here in the Inland Northwest, once the sun comes out, the skies clear up and the warmer weather sets in, it makes it that much easier to escape the mundane and explore the many flavors that can be found here at home.

Though you may have your favorites that can be found just out your doorstep in your own neighborhood, you might want to try to make it a point to venture out a bit further to see what other chefs in the area are bringing to the table.

Throughout North Idaho and Spokane, there are hundreds of unique locally owned dining destinations ready to serve you, with your favorite national chains peppered throughout. Locals and visitors alike are sure to find everything from the comforts of home to unexplored flavors you would only expect to find halfway around the world.

From menus that reflect our culture here in the Northwest, with a focus on supporting local farmers and purveyors, to good old American, Southern, Cajun and French, to Italian, Mediterranean, Indian, Chinese and Japanese … the options are endless!

Whether you choose to dine in, take out or order to-go, you

can expect to enjoy some incredible food made by passionate cooks and chefs, served up by experienced staff. And, as always, remember to show your service-industry workers some grace. As worker shortages continue throughout the area, affecting many of our beloved restaurants, those who are in the kitchen, and on the floor, are continuing to work hard to ensure each guest walks away having enjoyed a pleasant, satisfying—and in many cases, exceptional—dining experience.

In addition to the many dining options, you can’t think of enjoying a meal out without accompanying it with a glass of wine, cold brew or cider, or craft cocktail. With dozens of wineries, breweries, distilleries and cider houses scattered across the region, chefs take full advantage, offering drink menus featuring these local producers, as well as even incorporating them into their dishes. Whether you are looking for that laid-back casual restaurant with a homey feel, or that unmatched fine-dining experience, you’ll find just the restaurant you are looking for.

Take a seat at one of our area’s prized restaurants, and explore the creativity and flavors that await. One-of-a-kind culinary experiences are ready to be discovered.

Make

your summer a culinary experience

Whether you are looking to stop in for a quick lunch, do a little shopping, pick up some wine for dinner or grab a beverage from the café—or all of the above—The Culinary Stone is the store you’re looking for, offering a variety of culinary products and services all under one roof! Located in beautiful Riverstone Village, The Culinary Stone has an expansive patio—perfect for hosting exciting events all summer long; events like BBQ & Bands, bringing together the fun of live music and flavorful BBQ cuisine from June through August.

From the grill or stovetop to tabletop, your list of kitchen items is covered. Shop from rows of kitchen gadgets, cookware, dinnerware, and gifts galore. Find specialty spices and local sauces that add new flavors to your favorite summer dishes or try fresh recipes from a wide selection of cookbooks. The team is happy to offer recommendations or answer your culinary questions and are always available to put together any size gift basket to celebrate the culinarian in your life. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a team favorite—soft brittle that melts in your mouth from International Award-Winning Premium Confectionery Robinson Confections.

The wine selection is reason enough to stop in, as wines are hand selected from most every major wine region in the world, with a focus on local wines. This summer you are invited to join The Culinary Stone for a variety of wine events, featuring tastings every Sunday afternoon and winemaker dinners hosted in-house by local wineries from across the Pacific Northwest.

“Our tastings and events are intended for everyone,” expressed Wine Buyer, Food and Beverage Manager Ethan Lillis. “Whether you are just starting to venture into wine or have been an enthusiast for years, we have something to offer each customer that walks through our doors.”

You’ll be treated to the best sandwiches in town at The Deli, prepared and served by the courteous and friendly staff. Choose

from an excellent selection of Boars Head meats and cheeses to take home, or enjoy craft and barrel-aged beer, wine and more. This is also the place to go for a beautiful and delicious charcuterie platter to impress your guests. You can order custom charcuterie boards or pick up a made-to-go gourmet spread to share.

Then there’s The Café, where specialty coffees and seasonal drinks are their forte, along with a delightful selection of pastries, all served up in a bright and cheery atmosphere. The Café now features The Culinary Stone’s own unique and carefully selected coffee, an Alderwood Roast that has been roasted over an open fire for an extra smooth, rich flavor you are sure to enjoy.

A favorite among customers are the on-site cooking classes; a fun way to experience new flavors while taking a front row seat to watch the chef in action. “Attending one of our weekly cooking classes is a must! Bring some friends for a fun night out,” shares Store Manager Susan Odell. “We have a wide variety of classes that teach you how to prepare cuisines from all around the world.” And the best part … you get to enjoy all the delicious foods prepared by the chef!

Proprietor, Patrick Volkar, is proud of all The Culinary Stone has to offer and the place it holds in so many hearts. “I love when our customers have friends and family visiting, and they share with us that we are at the top of their lists of places to bring their loved ones.”

Being a locally owned business allows The Culinary Stone team to cater directly to the local community, finding their needs and fulfilling them.“We offer our customers a comforting experience with a friendly staff that is eager to please and give personalized attention to each person who visits us,” smiles James Culp, Merchandiser Extraordinaire. “It’s the daily human interaction that brings a ‘happy buzz’ every day inside our store.”

From the kitchen to the wine, the classes and deli, to the café…The Culinary Stone family invites you to come join the experience.

CONNECTION AND COMFORT

If you’re looking for a place in Sandpoint where you’ll be treated to an incredible experience of community, connection and comfort, paired with a great drink and some spectacular live entertainment, look no further than 219 Lounge.

Since 1937, the 219 Lounge has been in continuous operation, embracing all who come through the doors. Today, customers are welcomed by the warmth and the bones of this historic building; the inviting and cozy atmosphere that will most certainly make anyone feel at home. Over the years, the 219 has adapted with the times, yet throughout the changes, they’ve retained an atmosphere where everyone feels like they have a place in the 219.

Mix in the friendly and professional bartenders, a stop at “The Niner,” as it’s been coined over the years, is a Sandpoint experience that will keep you coming back for more.

“In the last five years, the level of professionalism with the barkeeps and their skill has grown, while still maintaining each person’s own unique character,” shares Mark Terry, general manager. “You’re going to get quality service when you step foot in the bar, whether it’s for a drink during the afternoon or you’re out with friends to celebrate and listen to live music.”

At 219, they pride themselves in going out of their way to know their guests as people, not just customers. “Our staff members are the best! They are dedicated to our customers and to

being true professionals,” affirms Mel Dick, owner. “You can’t be in business since 1937 without great staff and great customers.”

The customers of 219 represent everything the Sandpoint community is about: old-timers, newcomers, visitors, and from all walks of life, according to Mel. “They are looking for a place to chill, spend time with friends, listen and dance to great music, watch a game, or just sanctuary from the daily grind of life.”

While the bar is stocked with all the familiar whiskeys, vodkas, gins and tequilas, “you never know when we will have that special, seemingly impossible to find, bottle of great aged whiskey on hand,” smiles Mel, who also mentions that they have recently started to focus on special, intimate off-site events and parties like whiskey tastings and old-school cocktails from the 1800s to the 1970s.

During the warmer months (June through September), the 219 reopens their outdoor patio and stage, where guests will be treated to live music outside every Saturday night while enjoying the full-service outside bar. Mark is excited to share that they are working hard to bring in food trucks on the weekend as well—which would make a nice addition to the great music and drinks.

Everything they do at the 219 is to bring a sense of community, connection and comfort. “I hope customers—new and old—feel that,” notes Mark. “Every person is important to us.”

Midtown Favorites!

Local couple grateful to their loyal customers and team

Syringa Japanese Café + Sushi Bar has been a favorite among locals since opening in 2006. Owners Viljo and Autumn Basso couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve built, and accomplished, since first opening their doors in that small, intimate space on Fourth Street.

With a flair for originality and excellence, Syringa, located in Coeur d’Alene’s midtown, has established itself as a restaurant destination for visitors. Always delivering the best in sushi and modern American cuisine, they’ve set the bar high and continue to deliver. Due to the restaurant’s success, they moved Syringa to a much larger location just north of the original space, and Syringa has only continued to flourish.

The couple’s second restaurant, The Bluebird - A Midtown Eatery, opened its doors in 2016. Inspired by the couple’s culinary travels and world adventures, the menu is seasonal as much as possible, with weekly

specials, allowing diners to try something new each time they visit. The menu includes an array of items including a rotating scallop special. In addition, weekends always offer dinner specials. They have an excellent wine list (you’ll want to join their monthly wine club, which Autumn oversees and manages), and a great selection of beer, ciders and sours. And don’t forget to stop in for their daily happy hour.

From late spring to early autumn, both restaurants offer outdoor dining to take in the sunshine while enjoying a beautiful meal out. At Syringa, their outdoor patio can seat 16 to 20 patrons, while The Bluebird’s sidewalk dining can accommodate 12 to 16. Guests can also enjoy a glass of wine in the private space next to The Bluebird while waiting to be seated.

The Bassos are excited to share that they recently purchased the building that houses The Bluebird and spent early spring remodeling the space. “Since the

104

building is ours now, we were able to update and elevate the interior. It’s like having a brand-new restaurant,” smiles Autumn. The Bluebird celebrated its seventh anniversary in May.

“We are just so grateful that our community has continued to support our restaurants. Being in business this long, we’ve seen families grow up, we have created so many friendships with our customers,” shares Autumn. “None of this could have been done without our employees. The crew we have is amazing. We have a couple people who have been with us for more than 10 years, a few people over 15 years. We are pretty blessed to have an incredible core crew.”

Longtime employee Sarah Champagne has recently taken over as manager for both restaurants, which allows for continuity between both locations.

As all restaurants in the Inland Northwest have experienced over the past three years, not only as a result of the pandemic but the rising costs of living in this beautiful place, Viljo and Autumn have still found it difficult to maintain a full staff but are grateful for the team they have.

Over the years, the Bassos have been dedicated to serving their guests the best in cuisine. They are proud to have been given the opportunity to provide each guest a unique—and delicious—meal, no matter where they choose to take a seat.

To explore their menus, and find their current hours, be sure to visit their restaurant websites. And don’t forget to follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

A Seed Planted 24 Years Ago

Coeur d'Alene business continues its passion for supporting a healthy community

It was 1999 when Joe Hamilton, with just one employee, opened Pilgrim’s Market in Coeur d’Alene. The goal was to invest in the local community, with a focus on providing healthy foods and supplements.

Today, Pilgrim’s Market has flourished to now occupy an entire city block, with 120 staff members.

In addition to the plethora of fresh produce and grocery items, Pilgrim’s produces its own line of fermented foods—The Cultured Mama. “Fermented foods are the traditional way to get probiotics; a very healthy tradition that’s been lost in the modern American diet,” shares Joe. What started with just sauerkraut and a fermented cashew vegetable dip has grown to offer more than 60 different items. They recently added Fermented Cashew Cheesecake to the list, with seasonal offerings utilizing raspberries and strawberries grown in Pilgrim’s organic garden, and huckleberries later in the summer and fall months.

Last year, Joe acquired the vacuum store next door to Pilgrim’s and plans on moving their Cultured Mama fermented foods production space into that building, which sits at approximately 1,300 square feet.

Making hundreds of healthy and tasty food items from scratch every day, Pilgrim’s provides an experience and product selection not found anywhere else. They recently began a bakery renovation by updating their equipment. Though not all of the equipment has arrived yet, they are already seeing wonderful improvements from the ovens that have been installed. “Next

up is the steam-injected Italian deck oven that will produce deliciously crispy and chewy European breads,” says Joe.

The one-of-a-kind deli is filled with the healthiest foods available in town. “The reality is it is prepared food that is fresh, fast and healthy, and very affordable for the quality of food we’re producing,” Joe affirms. Pilgrim’s offers a hot bar, organic salad bar, as well as pre-made grab-and-go meals–enjoy items like the Keto Steak Salad, Salmon Rice Bowl, and Tarragon Chicken Salad. And there’s more, with a grill where items are made fresh to order. If you’re in the mood for a Yak Burger, Veggie Bean Burger or Chicken Chipotle Sandwich, this is the place to go.

Behind the store is where you’ll find Pilgrim’s organic urban farm, which produces thousands of pounds of farm-fresh foods each year. “Anytime a customer sees the GRH (Grown Right Here) logo, they will know that it was grown, or made with items grown, in our organic farm,” says Joe.

Don’t miss demos with Lorri five days a week, allowing customers to try Pilgrim’s house-made items and hand-picked products. “We try to demo foods that you may not have purchased yet to expose them to new flavors, new brands,” smiles Joe.

For the past 24 years, Pilgrim’s Market has continually expanded its space and offerings to keep up with the needs of the community. They recently launched their new website as an additional resource, with research tools for finding recipes, natural support for various conditions, and so much more!

Downtown Spokane Your one-stop shopping, dining and entertainment destination Nestled in the Heart of 110110

Spokane, Washington, is a city immersed in natural beauty and offers travel-worthy attractions. In the heart of this charming community, you will find River Park Square.

Boasting 420,000 square feet comprised of 55 businesses, River Park Square features everything from Nordstrom, movies, and home fashion to casual and full-service dining and entertainment.

Conveniently located just steps away from top hotels, Spokane Falls and Riverfront Park, there is always something to do in and around River Park Square, “whether it’s the Skate Ribbon, Looff Carrousel, Sky Ride, Mobius Discovery Center or Light Show at the Pavilion,” says Rita Koefod, senior director of Marketing, Communications and Branding for River Park Square. “River Park Square is also a pre-show hot spot within walking distance of the Fox Theater, comedy clubs, Spokane Arena and First Interstate Center for the Arts—home of Best of Broadway.” Another popular destination is River Park Square’s own AMC Theatres with IMAX, featuring recliners and reserved seating options.

Attracting visitors from the entire region (and Canada!), River Park Square is the premier shopping destination between the Seattle area and Minneapolis. “Shoppers can find sought-after brands like Nordstrom, Apple, Pottery Barn, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Nike Factory Store and Lush,” shares Rita.

And then there’s the local shopping to be had. From Here, The PNW Dream and The Small Biz Shoppe each offer its own distinct personality while offering a creative blend of products sourced from area artists and makers. Rita also suggests checking out an Inland Northwest favorite, Anderson & Co., a unique shopping destination for fine menswear with bespoke quality and extraordinary service.

When visiting with the kids, be sure to snap a pic with “Ruby,” America’s largest red stiletto on display year-round. Checking in at 9-feet 11-inches tall and weighing more than 500 pounds, it’s sure to impress. “For more family fun, check out Polka Dot Pottery, Whiz Kids Toy Store and Ben & Jerry’s,” suggests Rita.

When it comes to dining, River Park Square has a unique array of options for patrons. Rita recommends locally owned Whim Wine Bar, a charming destination dishing up thin-crust pizzas, charcuterie boards and carefully selected wines, ciders and beer from around the world. She adds that visitors will also love their newest full-service restaurants— MacDaddy’s (mac and cheese nachos anyone?) and Shiki Sushi.

The River Park Square staple Twigs is known for its martinis, wide menu and terrace dining, which opens to the center’s atrium. P.F. Chang’s is another popular destination for locals and tourists alike. For those boba tea lovers, there’s the sister-owned Tea’s Company, which launched as a farmers market pop-up stand and just last year made its new home at River Park Square.

“Whether it's for a date, family excursion, night out or a large group event, Flatstick Pub is a fun, unique experience for local craft beer, pizza, old-school fun and memorable moments, including mini golf and duffleboard,” shares Rita. Bonus: Flatstick is family friendly until 9pm.

Rita counters the narrative about malls and brick-and-mortars closing their doors by reminding the community about the importance, and elevated experience, of in-person shopping. “It’s impossible to replicate the sense of discovery that comes from shopping in-store. It’s a true benefit getting the size right on the first try. Who doesn’t love avoiding shipping delays and taking goodies home immediately? More and more, we also find customers are well-informed about the true cost and environmental impact of returning online orders. Beyond that, a day at River Park Square is about community and spending time with friends and family.”

Throughout the year, River Park Square hosts a variety of events, partnering with many local nonprofits and community organizations. Nearly every weekend, you’re sure to find something happening downtown and at River Park Square.

With the wide array of dining, fashion, events and entertainment, visitors will discover something new each time they plan a visit to River Park Square.

River Park Square is open 10am to 8pm Monday through Saturday and 11am to 6pm Sunday, with AMC Theatres and restaurants open later.

Dining

From what began as a mobile pizza oven to now two successful brick-and-mortar restaurants, Laura and Seth Carey couldn’t be prouder of Versalia Pizza and are truly grateful for those who continue to show their unwavering support of their vision.

On the menu, of course, are their flavorful thin-crust pizzas (with vegetarian and gluten-free options available). Guests can also choose from a selection of creative salads, appetizers and desserts, beer and wine, as well as a variety of seasonal cocktails (which are available at their Kendall Yards location).

Laura and Seth credit Chris Ambrose, or “lead pizza creator” as he prefers to be called, for the creativity. “Chris thinks about the tastes and flavors he’s had in the past in other dishes and asks if he can recreate that into a pizza,” affirms Laura.

Chris incorporates seasonal ingredients whenever possible and is always keeping a running list of ideas and flavors that he thinks may work well to incorporate into one of their specialty pizzas. “Sometimes great ideas get sidelined by costs, difficulty in quickly recreating, or prep time. He really tries to make the specials ‘special’ with a unique approach or ingredient,” says Laura. “His fine-dining experience has really helped with ideas and thought processes.”

To get an idea of the creativity in the kitchen, their most popular pizza has been the Peach Pie with Olive Oil: Versalia’s three-cheese blend, peaches, bacon, gorgonzola crumbles and a sage-honey drizzle. “It’s only available for two weeks in the summer, but people come in asking for it

year-round,” Laura says proudly. Another popular one, which is featured around football playoff time, is their Jalapeño Popper Pie: with a garlic cream cheese base, their three-cheese blend, Beechers cheddar, bacon, jalapeños, honey and crispy panko.

During the warmer months, you won’t want to pass up the opportunity to pair your meal with a seat outdoors. Their Kendall Yards location features an expansive patio, seating approximately 40 guests, with views showcasing the Spokane River Valley along with the city skyline and Monroe and Maple Street bridges. “It really is one of the best views in the city!” Laura smiles.

The Liberty Lake location, situated in the River District next to Orchard Park, can seat around 30 patrons on their outdoor patio—which almost doubles their seating capacity during the warmer seasons, Laura notes. Just a short walk from the Centennial Trail, guests can enjoy a meal while taking in views of the surrounding hills.

When it comes to what the Careys are most proud of when it comes to their restaurants, it is the challenges they have navigated through throughout their 14 years in business. “No one expected us to make it with our mobile woodfired oven past the first summer,” Laura reflects. “We made it through heat exhaustion, thunderstorms, wind, wildfire smoke, COVID—and now have two thriving restaurants to go with our mobile ovens.”

Laura, Seth and their Versalia team invite you to dine with them and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

John Grollmus and longtime friend and business partner Brad Fosseen grew up in the restaurant industry, working and learning from the ground—or should we say dish pit—up. Today, they are the visionaries behind Moon Time in Coeur d’Alene, The Porch in Hayden Lake, and The Elk, Two Seven and El Que in Spokane.

Employing an average of 100 staff members between all establishments, there are several components to their recipe for success. First off is location, with each restaurant located in neighborhood-centric spots to develop a hyper-local appeal. Then there’s consistency. For well over two decades, this has been key to their unwavering success—consistent menus, consistent service, consistent principles and … consistent, enthusiastic team members.

“Having employees who have worked with us for a lengthy period and who are also passionate about our restaurant is key on many levels,” affirms John. “Employee retention helps create a consistent environment for our guests not only in regard to table service but also in the food on the plate. Guests are always happy to see the same smiling faces when visiting, and having such a long-tenured kitchen staff helps ensure that guests will get the same top-notch quality food every time they eat with us.”

114

In addition, both John and Brad spend time in all of their restaurants, ensuring that they maintain their high standards of service, food and beverages.

As many restaurants experience high turnover rates, John and Brad have created a work environment that enables employees to grow with them. “Restaurant work is often thought of as short term, but with us, it becomes a way of life and a pathway to fulfilling goals,” affirms John. “You need to take care of your staff on many levels. It’s important to be respectful, friendly and thankful, but it’s also important to pay well and offer benefits too. We have always wanted to provide an environment that makes it possible to have stability, so our staff members’ desire to be able to buy a house, have kids, create a home for themselves and become an essential part of their communities is attainable.”

Some of these longstanding employees include Chris Schultz, chef and general manager of Moon Time. For the past 26 years, Chris—who has been a close friend of both Brad and John since before their opening and remains so to this day—has been an integral part of the business.

Kevin Russell has a long history with John, dating back to when they were both cooks at Schweitzer Mountain. Kevin first joined the Elk team 23 years ago as a cook and was eventually promoted to chef. While these days he is primarily the chef/manager of the Two Seven kitchen, he also plays an essential role in keeping The Elk kitchen going strong as well, according to John.

Lark Patton has been a part of the Moon Time family for the past 17 years, and when the restaurant acquired a spirits/ hard liquor license last year, Lark was promoted to bar/ front-of-house manager. John shares that after 16 years as one of the finest servers in the city, “it was a natural move to promote Lark into her new role as bar manager.”

Marshall Powell began as a bartender at The Elk 19 years ago and today is general manager of Two Seven, where he is the hands-on front-of-the-house manager in addition to helping with many behind-the-scenes tasks for all the restaurants including book work, policy writing, insurance and much more.

When it comes to why their employees love working for this family of restaurants, John smiles, “Because we’re awesome guys! In all seriousness, though, we love and cherish every employee as though they are a part of our families. Since neither Brad nor I have children, our employees are actually, in a way, our families.”

While most of the focus from the press in the industry tends to be about what’s new and hot, John can honestly say that he is extremely proud to experience continued growth from the shadows. “It is always a treat to meet people who are over-the-top excited to describe how much they love our restaurants and how personal they are to them. After all, we may have inadvertently created a corn pasta cult.”

Winemaking

Father/daughter duo creating a family legacy

A Love of M

ike Conway has been in the business of wine since 1972 (that’s half a century!). After a short stint in the Air Force, he would go on to work for some big wineries in California in their microbiology department. One thing led to another, and he found his way to Washington state in 1980, alongside his wife Ellena, and became the first winemaker in Spokane and went on to establish the 35th winery in the state in 1982.

On the day Mike and Ellena made the decision to start Latah Creek Wine Cellars, they found out they were pregnant with their daughter Natalie. “So really, the winery and I are both their babies,” smiles Natalie Barnes.

Fast forward 22 years to 2004, when Natalie decided to change her focus in college from physical therapy to winemaking. When the harvest rolled around that year, Mike showed Natalie a behind-the-scenes look at winemaking. “I had helped in the past with pumping wine from one tank to the next, or bottling, but I didn’t partake in the nitty gritty of it. For the 2004 vintage, he showed me the differences in the yeast we use for fermentation, tasting the juice as it ferments and the subtle flavors you can pick up on, and so much more. Just a few months later, I was hooked. I had fallen in love with the art of winemaking.”

126

Natalie graduated college the following spring and has been working full time winemaking with her dad ever since, making them the first father/daughter winemaking team in the state; the 2022 harvest marked her 18th year as a winemaker.

“I didn’t realize, until recently, the special bond you get when working so closely with your parents,” shares Natalie. “There is a nearness you experience when working alongside them. The lovingness they raised you with becomes integrated into your workday. The thought of working alone amongst the tanks and not having my buddy there to talk with is sad, so I cherish every moment I’ve got with him! And my mom too!”

When it comes to the future of Latah Creek Wine Cellars, it holds much the same, according to Natalie: “We will continue to make delicious award-winning wines at affordable prices. We will continue to make small lots of Reserve Reds, striving to educate fellow wine lovers on different varietals they may not have heard of. We will continue to treat all of our customers like family, because that’s what they are. And my dad and I will continue to make wine together until he chooses to step away—which I don’t think he’ll ever do. He started this winery, nurtured it, and watched it grow to 41 years old!”

As she looks back on the years working side by side with her father, Natalie reflects on the important lessons he has taught her that she will always carry with her. “To let the fruit speak for itself. Don’t cover up the natural flavors of the grapes, as that is what makes the wine spectacular. Don’t be suckered into trends, as they come and

go—but you need to remain. And lastly, whether you get recognition or not, know that you make incredible wines that people love—use that to fuel your passion.”

In the meantime, Natalie’s younger daughter Paige has grown more interested in the family business—especially after a recent trip to Italy, exploring generations-old family wineries. “It really stuck with her, as she listened intently to each family’s story, what a family business means and the legacy that’s passed on from generation to generation,” shares Natalie. “I spent last summer with her by my side, watching me filter, bottle, clean, and much more. It made my heart soar.”

Natalie, Mike and Ellena invite you to stop by and taste the love and dedication that’s poured into each Latah Creek wine. And be sure to sign up for their newsletter and visit their website to find out details about their 41st anniversary celebration in July.

Shopping. It’s a favorite pastime for many—especially when you stumble upon that hidden shop or specialty product you never knew existed! And there’s always a reason, if not occasion, to gift yourself or someone special a thoughtful “just because.”

Though online ordering through big-box companies has made life much easier for everything from clothes shopping to beauty and household items, holiday gifting, food and so much more, it is vital to our locally owned and operated businesses that we show our support by showing up and doing a little shopping. Plus, visiting with the owners and browsing items in person, being able to hold them in our hands, makes the experience that much better.

Across the Inland Northwest, in addition to the many wonderful locally owned businesses, there are businesses that also create many—if not all—of the items they sell (may it be in-store, online or both).

Though this is just a glimpse of all there is to discover, take a peek at some of these Inland Northwest businesses that are providing unique and distinct items, and to top it off, they’re local.

134 REAL NORTHWEST LIVING

Celebrity Cruises’ newest ship, Celebrity Beyond, takes cruising to a whole new level with its resort-at-sea concept, with high-end touches and clever design that makes the space feel more like a resort than a ship. Nothing epitomizes this more than the astounding venue, Eden. With three levels and almost 12,000 square feet, this transformative atmosphere ebbs and flows from morning to night with unique experiences. Located at the back of the ship, the space feels wrapped in glass and connects each guest with the sea surrounding the ship. The sheer size is mind-blowing, and the décor is a sensory experience with textures, colors, vibrant plants and unique seating.

The Celebrity Beyond is an elegant ship with artistic outdoor spaces as well, from the only jogging track at sea with a hill to the Magic Carpet—a floating platform with seating and a bar, where guests can be up to 13 stories above sea level off the starboard side of the ship. Even at full capacity of 3,260 guests, it never feels crowded. There are a surprising number of private nooks to find a quiet space whether indoors or outdoors.

INSIDER TIP:

Select a cruise departing from Fort Lauderdale. Both Alaska Air and Delta Air Lines offer nonstop flights to Fort Lauderdale from Seattle. The airport is just a short 10-minute drive to the port. Book an Eastern Caribbean cruise which gives you more days at sea. With a new ship you will want the extra time to enjoy all the features.

There is a variety of accommodation available on the Celebrity Beyond. The Edge Series ships have set a new standard for cruise cabins with innovative features such as in-room automation that allows you to adjust shades, lighting and temperature from your phone. Every stateroom features a king-sized bed with eXhale bedding and Cashmere mattresses. For those on a budget, the inside cabins provide comfortable lodging and access to all the included features on the ship. One of the most popular cabins aboard is the innovative Edge Stateroom with Infinite Veranda. These spacious rooms bring the outside in with a floor-to-ceiling window that opens at the touch of a button to become a balcony, allowing fresh sea air into the room and gorgeous views. It also allows the veranda, which has solid side walls, to become part of your stateroom, adding an additional 42 square feet.

Normandie offers a contemporary take on French cuisine, while Tuscan offers Italian inspired cuisine. Cosmopolitan has a global spin on new American cuisine, and Cyprus offers Mediterranean cuisine with homage to the Greek heritage of the Celebrity Line. In addition to the main dining rooms, you’ll find four casual dining venues around the ship, all included in your fare.

For foodies, the Specialty Dining restaurants are worth the extra expense. Le Voyage is Celebrity’s newest specialty restaurant and currently only available on Celebrity Beyond. It is Chef Daniel Boulud’s, Global Culinary Ambassador, first signature restaurant at sea. His skills really shine with the menu he developed for Le Voyage and in the training of the culinary

staff. With a name like Le Voyage, travel is the inspiration and is reflected in the global flavors throughout this eclectic menu.

Another must-do dining experience is the Eden Restaurant, located on the lower level of Eden. Floor-to-ceiling windows three stories high create a breathtaking atmosphere. The restaurant’s theme is rooted in nature with a garden feel and featuring a globally inspired menu. The open-kitchen concept allows diners to see their meals being prepared. Watch chefs put the finishing touches on their culinary creations, each a work of gastronomic art. Dishes such as Aegean Sea Ceviche, Sheep’s Milk Ricotta Gnocchi, Fresh Red Snapper, and Nova Scotia Lobster Casserole will make it tough to choose.

There is so much to see and do aboard the Celebrity Beyond that one cruise may not be enough to experience it all.

DoTHIN G S TO

There is so much to see and do aboard the Celebrity Beyond that one cruise may not be enough to experience it all. For a day at sea, start off with a sunrise walk on the ship’s jogging track, where only five laps equals a mile. It weaves its way through two decks with lots to see along the way—including the gorgeous pink, yellow and orange hues of a beautiful sunrise. Guests can actually book excursions that take place on the ship, such as a behind-the-scenes tour or a bridge tour, where you may luck out and meet the famous Captain Kate McCue, Celebrity’s own Instagram celebrity. Book these early, as they sell out quickly. Enjoy relaxing spa treatments, and take advantage of the thermal suite—before or after—in this luxurious sanctuary.

Celebrity Beyond offers traditional shore excursions, but if you are not into large groups they now have some great options. At least 21 days out from your cruise you can work with the private journey team to craft a special trip just for you and those traveling with you. Unlike booking on your own, you have the guarantee the ship will wait for you if your tour runs late. Small Group Discoveries are limited to 24 guests and are thoughtfully created and locally inspired. Many are community tourism, which helps support the locals such as a coffee tour in Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic that brings local farmers together with tourists. Other examples include making pasta in Florence with the Marinelli family or touring UNESCO sites. Develop a deeper appreciation of your destination through the eyes of a local guide.

The Celebrity Beyond is cruising Europe and the Caribbean during 2023, and the Celebrity Ascent launches in November 2023. Celebrity offers specials throughout the year. Book well in advance if you want to stay in the Retreat, as the suites sell out first.

• Finish with peas and bucatini, cracking the eggs on top of hot pasta and mixing in with tongs. Do not let the eggs boil in the cream sauce, as it will curdle.

• Turn off early, and if it gets thick, place a little pasta water to thin out the sauce.
