ELEGANCE

A builder’s perspective on building and remodeling beautiful, strong homes in the Inland Northwest

Hey there, folks! Chris Turnbull here, the guy behind Box H Construction in the beautiful town of Sandpoint, Idaho. I wanted to take a moment to share with you what we’re all about and why we’re so passionate about building and remodeling homes that not only stand strong against the elements but also look darn good doing it.

Strength Meets Beauty

You know, I’ve always believed that a home should be more than just a place to live. It should be a piece of art that complements the stunning landscapes we’re blessed with here in the Inland Northwest. At Box H Construction, we’re all about using materials that can take a beating from Mother Nature while still giving your home that timeless elegance.

We take pride in using locally sourced and sustainable materials because, let’s face it, it just makes sense. Why not showcase the natural beauty of our surroundings by incorporating timber from our very own forests and using native stone that’s been right under our noses?

Whether it’s a new build or a remodel, it’s our way of making sure your home feels like it belongs right where it is.

Innovative Designs for Demanding Conditions

Now, this part’s exciting. The Inland Northwest throws some challenges our way—extreme temperatures, heavy snow, and the occasional shake from seismic activity. But we’ve got it covered. Our designs are all about making sure your home not only survives but thrives in these conditions.

Whether it’s a brand-new construction or a remodel, we use top-notch insulation materials and energy-efficient design principles to keep your place cozy year-round. And don’t even get me started on snow loads—we engineer our structures to handle the heaviest snowfall like it’s just another winter day.

And earthquakes? No problem. We’re all about cutting-edge engineering to give you peace of mind when the ground decides to do a little dance.

Putting the ‘Human’ in Home

For me, building and remodeling homes isn’t just about nails and beams; it’s about people. We work hand in hand with our clients, architects and craftsmen to make sure your home is not just a structure but a reflection of you and your lifestyle.

And it doesn’t stop at the blueprints. The inside of your home should feel as unique as you are. That’s why, whether it’s a new build or a remodel, we team up with local artisans to create custom touches—from handcrafted wooden details to unique stonework. Your home should be as individual as you are.

Love of Community and Sustainability

Being part of the Inland Northwest community means the world to us. We’re not just building and remodeling houses; we’re contributing to the well-being of our neighbors and the environment. We’re all about sustainable practices, using materials responsibly, and supporting our local community.

So, there you have it—Box H Construction in a nutshell. We’re not just building and remodeling houses; we’re crafting resilient elegance that stands the test of time, just like the incredible Inland Northwest that we call home!

HBOX H CONSTRUCTION

We build the future. Remodel the past.

INTERIOR MEETS EXTERIOR

Combing your favorite cozy exterior elements with your interior makes for a beautiful, natural space

In the ever-evolving world of interior design, a captivating trend has emerged—bringing the allure of the exterior indoors. As homeowners seek to create spaces that seamlessly blend with the natural world, a palette of exterior elements finds its place within the sanctuary of our homes. Natural stones, with their timeless elegance, are no longer confined to outdoor spaces; they grace our living rooms and kitchens, infusing a sense of organic luxury. Mixed woods, reminiscent of sprawling forests, now find a home in our bedrooms, creating warmth and character.

Greenery, once confined to gardens, introduces a breath of fresh air within our living spaces, promoting not just aesthetic appeal but also a connection with nature. The industrial charm, once associated with outdoor architecture, now defines chic urban interiors, embracing the raw beauty of exposed materials. Molding, a hallmark of exterior detailing, now adorns our interiors, adding sophistication and depth.

Natural tones and colors, inspired by earth’s palette, dominate modern interiors, fostering a sense of tranquility and serenity. This convergence of exterior aesthetics with interior design reflects a desire to create harmonious spaces that reflect the beauty of the natural world within the confines of our homes. Join us on a journey where the boundaries between inside and outside blur, and the elements of nature become integral parts of our domestic landscapes.

natural stones

Embarking on a journey to bring the outdoors inside, the timeless allure of natural stone emerges as a focal point in contemporary interior design. Beyond its traditional outdoor role, natural stone, with its unique textures and hues, now graces our indoor living spaces, adding a touch of organic sophistication. Whether adorning countertops, accent walls, or flooring, the sheer versatility of natural stone introduces a tactile and visual richness that transcends conventional design boundaries. From the rugged charm of slate to the elegant veins of marble, each stone variety tells a story of earth’s artistry. Its cooling properties also make it a practical choice for spaces seeking thermal equilibrium. The integration of natural stone seamlessly connects our interiors with the tranquility and timelessness of the natural world, creating a harmonious sanctuary within the confines of our homes.

COOL TONES

Transform your indoor haven by embracing cool tones — serene blues, tranquil greens and soothing grays. These hues effortlessly evoke a sense of calm, making your living space a haven of relaxation. From accent walls to furnishings, incorporating cool tones adds a touch of sophistication and modernity. Elevate your interior ambiance with this refreshing color palette, creating a sanctuary that reflects tranquility and style.

bring the elements indoors

Bringing a firepit table indoors ingeniously merges the allure of outdoor living with the comfort of your indoor space. This innovative feature introduces a unique, cozy ambiance reminiscent of starry nights around a campfire. It becomes a focal point for social gatherings, offering the warmth and charm of an outdoor firepit with the convenience and safety of indoor settings.

Designed to be smokeless and suitable for indoor use, these tables enhance the room’s aesthetic while providing a novel entertainment element. They perfectly blend the rustic feel of outdoor adventures with the sophistication of modern living, creating an inviting, multifunctional space for relaxation and socializing.

green green green

Breathe life into your indoor spaces by embracing the invigorating presence of greenery. Beyond traditional outdoor realms, plants and foliage have become essential interior design elements, infusing homes with natural vitality. Whether it’s cascading vines, statement potted plants or a lush indoor garden, incorporating greenery adds a touch of biophilic beauty.

Not only do these living accents purify the air, but they also contribute to a sense of well-being and tranquility. The dynamic interplay of textures and shades of green creates visual interest, transforming your living space into a verdant oasis. Embrace the trend of biophilic design and let nature flourish indoors, fostering a connection to the outdoors within the comfort of your home

INDUSTRIAL

Infuse urban flair into your indoor living space by incorporating industrial elements. Exposed brick, steel and concrete bring raw, edgy charm, creating a contemporary ambiance. Utilize metal fixtures, pendant lights and reclaimed materials to amplify the industrial aesthetic. This design trend not only adds a touch of urban sophistication but also celebrates the beauty found in the unconventional, transforming your home into a stylish and eclectic haven.

Envelop your living space in the organic comfort of natural fibers. Woven baskets, jute rugs and textured accessories bring the essence of the outdoors inside, adding an earthy and tactile quality. These elements not only infuse warmth but also connect your home to the natural world. Choose natural fibers for a touch of relaxed elegance, creating an interior ambiance that mirrors the serenity and authenticity of nature.

In the face of an economic recession in 2010, Josh Hissong and Armando Hurtado founded HDG Architecture. Over the past 14 years, HDG has undergone a remarkable journey marked by resilience, adaptability and growth. You could say that HDG is now “under adult supervision.”

A native of North Idaho, Josh developed a love for design early on. After managing and owning multiple restaurants as a young adult, he recognized the importance of better hospitality design. Venturing into designing restaurants and commercial kitchens in 2006, he joined forces with architect Armando Hurtado in 2010 to explore the broader realm of architecture.

Now licensed in 10 states across the US, HDG Architecture provides their clients architecture, interior design, branding, and material and furniture procurement. The firm’s commitment to authenticity and a unique design-forward mission has led to organic growth and recognition nationally. Committed to better design, HDG works in the commercial, residential, mixed-use and hospitality realm.

As a business owner, Josh fosters an inspiring, fun and positive work environment. His passion for design extends beyond the office, with an annual company trip to Europe and an office environment that is both creative and inspiring. His commitment to both his team and clients remains the driving force behind HDG’s success. HDG still looks at projects through the lens of the client as well as the business.

In addition, HDG Architecture has ventured into a new project, Stroom Interiors (StroomInteriors.com), alongside partners Aubrey Plaisance and Cody Hersch, highlighting the firm’s commitment to innovation and excellence. Community engagement is a core aspect of Josh’s ethos, evident in his podcast “If not now, when?” and his active support for various nonprofits, contributing both monetarily and through time and effort.

HDG ARCHITECTURE

Crafting dreams and communities

HDG Architecture’s client relations approach is illustrated through its comprehensive services, including architecture, design, branding, and immersive virtual reality experiences. The firm’s dedication to an exceptional customer experience has resulted in lifelong friendships with clients, emphasizing the human connection as a driving force.

Josh underscores HDG’s commitment to never selling out, a principle rooted in the firm’s origins during challenging economic times. Their client-forward mission ensures a consistent approach, whether working on a $25-million home, a mixed-use building or a small renovation project. Presently, HDG is engaged in over 40 projects, including a 22,000-squarefoot personal residence in Sandpoint, overseen by HDG project architect Michael Mannhard and Aubrey Plaisance. The project promises to be (in Hissong’s words) “dope AF,” with completion expected over the next 16 months.

Josh Hissong’s journey with HDG Architecture is a testament to passion, authenticity, and a commitment to creating remarkable spaces. Through organic growth, community engagement, and an unwavering dedication to their values, HDG continues to design and execute dream homes while positively impacting the communities they serve. Under Josh’s leadership, HDG Architecture’s evolution reflects not only the success of a business but the realization of dreams and the transformation of communities.

Three ways to spruce up your home garden

1

As the days lengthen and nature awakens, our yearning for the great outdoors becomes undeniable. The backyard, often relegated to the outskirts of our attention, is now poised to emerge as the star attraction in the upcoming spring season. Through a series of simple yet transformative tips and tricks, your outdoor space can evolve into a sanctuary of unparalleled comfort and relaxation, beckoning you to revel in the warmer months to come.

Begin by contemplating the furniture as the linchpin of your backyard comfort. Opt for pieces that seamlessly blend style with durability, prioritizing materials like teak, aluminum or resilient wicker. Coupled with plush cushions adorned in vibrant hues, these elements not only cater to your aesthetic sensibilities but also withstand the capricious whims of weather. Imagine sinking into a sumptuous sofa or reclining in chairs that entice you to surrender to relaxation.

To cultivate intimacy within your outdoor haven, strategically arrange your seating. By bringing chairs and sofas into close proximity, you create an inviting space conducive to conversation and communal moments. Picture a hammock gently swaying, or a hanging chair inviting whimsy — these thoughtful arrangements morph your backyard into a constellation of personal retreats within a broader canvas.

As spring ushers in warmer days and balmy evenings, consider making al fresco dining a central feature of your outdoor space. Invest in a sturdy dining set that

PROTECTING A LEGACY OF WILDERNESS IN NORTH IDAHO
44
local feature

Phil Hough and his wife, Deb, are avid outdoor enthusiasts, having hiked the “triple crown” of long-distance hikes — the Appalachian Trail, Continental Divide Trail and Pacific Crest Trail (twice).

Yet, Phil, a founding member and the executive director of Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness (FSPW), believes the 88,000-acre National Forest land located here in North Idaho is some of the most beautiful country he has ever encountered.

“In my opinion, after having hiked the entire length of the United States on three different long-distance trails and

seeing an abundance of public land management … it made me appreciate that we have something very special here,” Phil explained.

After growing up on the East Coast and spending most of his adult life in the Western U.S., Phil and his family moved to Sagle, Idaho, in 2002.

In 2003, the U.S. Forest Service began revising the land management plans for North Idaho — a process Phil was heavily involved in due to his affiliation with the Idaho Native Plant Society.

45 SPRING 2024 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL

“It became pretty clear after about a year that there was really a need to have more attention paid to the wilderness question than the Forest Service was doing at the time,” Phil recalled.

Desiring to focus more attention on that issue, Phil and a group of colleagues came together to form FSPW. Officially founded in January 2005, FSPW began advocating for a proper wilderness proposal for the Scotchmans.

Over the years, Phil and the group have learned more about how public policy works in relation to forest designation, and how important it is to educate people about what wilderness areas are and why they are important.

“Our body of work is about bringing the public together in North Idaho and Northwestern Montana to demonstrate the broad-based support from all kinds of people — all walks of life — for wilderness,” Phil added.

In 2010, Idaho Department of Fish and Game commissioned a four-year study on the rare forest carnivores in the area. This project allowed FSPW to engage more than 300 volunteers, who put up cameras around the Scotchmans and helped collect data.

Over the years, Phil and the group have learned more about how public policy works in relation to forest designation, and how important it is to educate people about what wilderness areas are and why they are important.

Over the years, Phil and the group have learned more about how public policy works in relation to forest designation, and how important it is to educate people about what wilderness areas are and why they are important.

At the end of those four years, FSPW had a large collective of committed individuals desiring to stay involved, so the group started a youth education program called Winter Tracks. Winter Tracks, now in its 10th year, partners with schools throughout Bonner (Idaho), Sanders (Montana) and Lincoln (Montana) counties to plan outdoor field days and other education activities — engaging approximately 500 students per year.

FSPW’s work extends far beyond just education, however, as they hold trail maintenance service projects, offer community hikes and events, provide free online resources to learn more about the importance of stewardship and hear other people’s wilderness stories, and much more.

One upcoming event, for example, is the Wild & Scenic Film Festival that will be held Friday, March 22, at the Panida Theater, considered one of the nation’s premier environmental and adventure film festivals.

When pondering his work at FSPW over the last 19 years, Phil often comes back to the idea of author Edward Abbey, who wrote that wilderness is a necessity of the soul. That necessity must be protected and cared for, and that is the mission of FSPW.

“If we want to be able to provide the legacy of wilderness for our grandchildren — so that they can understand the wonder of wilderness just the way we did or our parents did — then we need to actively preserve that and protect that opportunity,” Phil concluded.

17th Annual CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo

Local ride raising funds for reading

Get ready to ride at this year’s CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo, set for Saturday, June 15! Started in 2008 by the Panhandle Alliance for Education, a nonprofit organization that focuses on grants to the Lake Pend Oreille School District (LPOSD), the Sandpoint Rotary took over the ride in 2013, and this year marks the 17th annual CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo.

Gran Fondos, known as “big rides,” started in Italy, and they provide a festive atmosphere with multiple timed bike routes. The CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo offers 150-, 80-, 40- and 25-mile road rides and 55- and, new in 2024, 75-mile gravel routes. There is also the family fun ride for everyone of all ages to enjoy. There are food and drink stations along the routes, as well as mechanical and medical support. The after-ride party, held on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille at City Beach Park from 2 to 8pm, concludes the day and includes prizes, food, a beer and wine garden, and music. Riders, their friends and family, and the entire community are invited to attend.

Since 2008, approximately $1 million has been raised to support educational programs of LPOSD and other Rotary Club of Sandpoint Youth initiatives, such as scholarships and leadership training for high school students.

Can you save too much for a rainy day?

This article was

“Save for a rainy day” is an old piece of advice — and a good one. But is it possible to save too much?

To begin with, what defines a “rainy day” in terms of financial needs? It could be any number of things: a temporary loss of employment, a major home or car repair, a large medical bill, and so on.

If you did not have the money readily available to pay for these types of expenses, you might be forced to dip into your IRA, 401(k) or other retirement accounts, incurring taxes and possible penalties, as well as lowering the amount of money you’d have available for retirement. And that’s why it’s a good idea to build an emergency fund containing up to six months’ worth of total expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account that’s separate from the accounts you use for your daily spending needs.

An emergency fund is valuable, but many people may be overfunding it. And while this isn’t the biggest financial mistake one can make, it could result in some missed opportunities.

For one thing, when you keep money in a low-risk account, you can generally count on your principal being protected, which means the money will be there for you when you need it — but the flip side is that this money likely won’t grow very much, if at all. And if you’re going to achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you need your investment portfolio to provide you with significant growth potential within the context of your individual risk tolerance. So, any excess dollars kept in your rainy-day

fund might be used to help fuel some growthoriented investments.

You could also use these dollars to help diversify your investment portfolio. If you only owned one type of investment, your portfolio could take a big hit if a market downturn affected just that asset class. But by owning a mix of stocks, bonds, government securities and other investments, you can help reduce the impact of market volatility. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t protect against all losses.)

Still, before deciding on what to do with extra money you might have in your emergency fund, how will you know if you indeed have too much? Up to six months’ worth of total expenses may be adequate for most people — but everyone’s life is different. For example, if you have reason to believe your employment — or that of your spouse — may be in jeopardy in the near future, or if you anticipate the need for some renovations to your home, but not for a year or so, you might want more than six months of expenses tucked away in your emergency fund. Also, once you’re retired, you may well want to keep a year’s worth of expenses in the fund. If you need cash, you don’t want to be forced to sell investments when their price may be down, especially since you have less time for them to recover.

Ultimately, when thinking about how much to keep in your emergency fund, review your situation carefully and weigh as many variables as you can. And if you do decide your rainyday fund is abundant, use any “overflow” in a way that can help you keep moving toward your financial goals.

Rehabilitation Services

A deeper look into rehab services: What they are and why you might need them

We hope most have heard about the new Rehabilitation equipment at BGH, thanks to the fundraising efforts of our Foundation over the last couple of years. The EksoNR Exoskeleton is a rehab technology, retraining the brain and body to walk after stroke, injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and other conditions. Bonner General Health is the only facility In Idaho and the surrounding region with this equipment! In addition to this new technology, Performance Therapy Services, the rehabilitation entity of Bonner General Health, offers many services with highly trained therapists across four locations.

Vestibular Rehabilitation - Vertigo is the sensation of spinning, causing dizziness and feeling off balance, and is common, occurring in nearly 40 percent of U.S. adults in their lifetime. Symptoms of vertigo can include vision problems, hearing loss or ringing in one or both ears, nausea and vomiting. It can be quite debilitating without proper treatment. A physical therapist performs vestibular therapy and can improve safety, balance and the ability to focus.

Aqua Therapy - Aqua therapy aims to treat injury, disability and disease with the rehabilitative properties of water. The Aqua Fit features an underwater treadmill with parallel bars for support and variable water depth, promoting muscle relaxation, improving strength, range of motion, muscle coordination and balance, and overall function independence. Aqua therapy is used to treat many conditions, including arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia, joint injury and replacement, pregnancy-related pain, stroke and more.

Hand Therapy - Hand therapy involves evaluating, identifying and treating any condition or injury to the upper extremities: shoulder,

arm, elbow, forearm, wrist and hand. Conditions such as arthritis, carpal tunnel and tendonitis can benefit from hand therapy. Additionally, fractures, nerve and tendon disorders, post-operative surgical hand conditions, and sports injuries can be treated with hand therapy. A certified hand therapist (CHT) will work closely with your provider to establish an individualized treatment plan to address your needs.

LSVT Big & Loud Parkinson’s Therapy - Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a brain condition that causes problems with movement, mental health, sleep, pain, and other health issues. There is no cure for PD, and the condition gets worse over time. (World Health Organization) There are approximately 1 million people in the U.S. living with PD. Common symptoms include tremors, painful muscle contractions and difficulty speaking. However, there are therapies and medicines to reduce symptoms, such as LSVT Big and Loud Therapy. LVST Big aims to increase movement, leading to better balance, increased trunk rotation, and overall quality of life, while LVST Loud addresses help to improve speech and voice function.

As Michelle Tucker, Director of Rehabilitation Services at Bonner General Health, shares, “The therapists at Performance Therapy Services have the highest level of certification and advanced training for the programs offered to assist our patients to get back to living their best lives.”

All therapies are provided at our Sandpoint and Priest River locations with a referral from your provider. For a complete list of Bonner General Health services, visit our website, BonnerGeneral.org.

CRAFTING REGIMENS THAT NOURISH INSIDE OUT

62

In the fast-paced world we find ourselves in, beauty regimens have become more than just a series of skin-care steps or makeup applications. Modern beauty enthusiasts are increasingly embracing a holistic approach that considers not only external appearance but also internal well-being. This paradigm shift toward beauty routines with health at their core is gaining momentum, and for good reason. Let’s delve into the intricacies of these beauty regimens, exploring how they can contribute to both physical allure and overall well-rounded health.

The Fusion of Beauty and Health: A New Paradigm

The days of beauty being solely skin-deep are long gone. Today’s beauty aficionados are recognizing the intimate connection between external radiance and internal vitality. Beauty regimens that incorporate health-conscious elements aim to create a synergy that enhances both aspects simultaneously.

Mindful Skin Care: Nourishing Your Skin’s Inner Glow

The foundation of any beauty routine is skin care, and the shift toward mindful skin care is transforming the industry. Embracing natural ingredients that not only address aesthetic concerns but also nourish the skin from within is becoming a norm. Antioxidant-rich serums, hydrating toners and botanical extracts are gaining popularity for their ability to promote skin health at a cellular level. This mindful approach not only ensures a radiant complexion but also supports the skin’s resilience and longevity.

Nutrient-Rich Diets: The Ultimate Beauty Elixir

True beauty emanates from the inside out, and the role of nutrition in maintaining a healthy appearance cannot be overstated. Beauty regimens that prioritize nutrient-rich diets are becoming increasingly prevalent. Foods rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are the building blocks of a radiant complexion. From the collagen-boosting properties of vitamin C to the skin-loving benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, a wellrounded diet contributes significantly to the overall health of your skin, hair and nails.

Sustainable Beauty: A Trend with Environmental and Health Benefits

In the quest for beauty and wellness, the environment should not be forgotten. Sustainable beauty regimens are gaining traction, emphasizing eco-friendly products and practices. Choosing clean beauty products not only reduces your exposure to harmful chemicals but also contributes to a healthier planet. The symbiotic relationship between personal health and environmental well-being is a cornerstone of this evolving approach to beauty.

Exercise as a Beauty Ritual: Sculpting Your Body, Nourishing Your Skin

Exercise is a powerful tool that goes beyond sculpting the body. Regular physical activity promotes blood circulation, flushing toxins from the skin and imparting a natural, healthy glow. Additionally, exercise releases endorphins, the body’s natural mood enhancers, contributing to a positive mindset that

HydraFacials have become the go-to solution for achieving flawless and rejuvenated skin. This revolutionary skin-care treatment combines the benefits of hydradermabrasion, chemical peel, and infusion of nourishing serums, resulting in a radiant and youthful complexion.

Unlike traditional facials, HydraFacials utilize a unique vortex technology to deeply cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate the skin. The process starts with gentle cleansing and exfoliation, removing dead skin cells and unclogging pores. Next, a gentle acid peel is applied to further enhance the exfoliation process, revealing a fresh layer of skin.

The highlight of HydraFacials is the infusion of nourishing serums. These serums are tailored to address specific skin concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and acne. The serums are delivered deep into the skin using a vortex extraction technology, ensuring maximum absorption and effectiveness.

HydraFacials are suitable for all skin types and offer immediate and long-lasting results. After just one session, you’ll notice a significant improvement in skin texture, tone and overall appearance. The treatment is also gentle and non-irritating, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin.

Regular HydraFacial sessions can help improve skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and promote a more even skin tone. The treatment also stimulates collagen production, enhancing the skin’s natural renewal process.

radiates through your appearance. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a yoga session or a high-intensity workout, integrating exercise into your beauty regimen can be transformative.

Customization for Individual Beauty and Health Needs

One size does not fit all, especially when it comes to beauty and health. The evolving landscape of beauty regimens encourages customization based on individual needs and preferences. Tailoring your routine to address specific skin concerns, dietary requirements and lifestyle factors ensures a more personalized and effective approach. Consulting with skin-care professionals, nutritionists and wellness experts can help create a regimen that aligns with your unique beauty and health goals.

Elevating Beauty Through Holistic Health

In the pursuit of beauty, the new paradigm emphasizes the intertwining of external allure and internal vitality. Beauty regimens that prioritize health contribute to a more sustainable and fulfilling approach to personal care. From mindful skin-care routines to nutrient-rich diets, holistic wellness practices and sustainable choices, the possibilities are diverse. By crafting beauty regimens with your health in mind, you not only enhance your physical appearance but also embark on a journey toward holistic well-being. Embrace the transformative power of beauty routines rooted in wellness, and let your radiance shine from the inside out.

While your neighborhood favorites beckon, consider venturing a little further to uncover the culinary treasures crafted by our local chefs.

Stretching across North Idaho, from Bonners Ferry to Sandpoint, Coeur d’Alene and beyond, a wealth of locally owned dining establishments await, accompanied by familiar national chains. Both locals and visitors are treated to a delectable spectrum, ranging from the comfort of homegrown flavors to international tastes that could transport you halfway around the globe.

In this culinary landscape, menus reflect North Idaho’s cultural roots, championing local farmers and purveyors whenever possible. You can savor American classics, Southern comfort, Cajun spice and French finesse, or traverse Italian, Mediterranean, Indian, Chinese and Japanese cuisines. The options are as abundant as they are diverse.

74

Savor the Season

Embrace the spring season by venturing outdoors and exploring the enticing offerings at your favorite restaurant. With the changing seasons, many eateries undergo a menu transformation, shifting from hearty winter fare to lighter, refreshing options that capture the essence of warmer weather.

It’s during the spring season that area farmers markets come alive, with their fresh produce, baked goods, artisan crafts and gifts, and so much more! Making a trip to the farmers market is a fun family affair during the warmer spring days and all summer long.

As spring unfolds, chefs skillfully incorporate fresher ingredients into their creations, presenting dishes that embody the spirit of the season. Discover a culinary journey as menus evolve to showcase the vibrancy of spring flavors.

Local Libations

Pair your meal with a glass of local wine or craft brew, as the region boasts an array of wineries and breweries—many award-winning. Pend d’Oreille Winery, Coeur d’Alene Cellars, Kootenai River Brewing, Mickduff’s Brewing Co., Selkirk Abbey Brewing Company, Paragon Brewing, Mad Bomber Brewing … These are just a sample of all there is out there to explore.

Many restaurants take pride in being able to carefully curate their drink lists to incorporate local, showing their unwavering support to other area businesses.

And you can’t forget about a hot cup of coffee to start your day or unwind with after a fantastic meal. With a number of North Idaho coffee roasters — Sprout Coffee Roasters in Hayden, Doma Coffee Roasting Company in Post Falls, Evans Brothers Coffee Roasters in Sandpoint and Lore Coffee Roasters in Bonners Ferry — coffee never tasted so good as when you know the people behind that cup o’ Joe are passionate about what they do.

It’s Time to Take a Seat

Embrace the opportunity to relish the creativity and flavors that define the Inland Northwest. From one-of-a-kind culinary experiences to cherished favorites, our region is a culinary paradise waiting to be discovered.

Show Grace to Restaurant Staff

Whether choosing to dine in, opt for takeout, or place a to-go order, local residents can look forward to an enchanting culinary experience at their favorite neighborhood eateries. Each dish is a testament to the chef’s heartfelt dedication, promising a taste sensation that transcends mere sustenance.

Accompanying these delectable creations is a service provided by a seasoned and devoted staff, despite the prevalent worker shortages affecting many local restaurants. In this challenging environment, patrons are encouraged to extend not only their palates but also their patience and gratitude to those diligently working to ensure every diner embarks on a memorable culinary journey.

Beyond the pleasure of dining, supporting these local establishments becomes a collective investment in community resilience, fostering a vibrant culinary landscape that withstands adversity and continues to enrich the lives of those who call North Idaho home.

Sandpoint Lions Club Egg Hunt

Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 30, for this year’s annual Egg Hunt, presented by the Sandpoint Lions Club. Always held the Saturday before Easter, the hunt begins at 9am sharp, rain or shine (or snow) at Lakeview Park (901 Ontario Street), so be sure to get there early! Be sure to check your eggs before you leave to see if you’ll walk away one of the lucky winners!

“Our favorite part of our traditional Egg Hunt is watching the excitement on each kid’s face as they hunt for eggs,” shares Janice Rader, Sandpoint Lions Club president. “Easter is the best part of spring. You can tell that the kids (and parents) are excited to get out and visit with their neighbors.”

The Sandpoint Lions Club will provide hot cocoa, and Evans Brothers Coffee Roasters will provide the coffee.
