INTERIOR MEETS EXTERIOR

Combing your favorite cozy exterior elements with your interior makes for a beautiful, natural space

In the ever-evolving world of interior design, a captivating trend has emerged—bringing the allure of the exterior indoors. As homeowners seek to create spaces that seamlessly blend with the natural world, a palette of exterior elements finds its place within the sanctuary of our homes. Natural stones, with their timeless elegance, are no longer confined to outdoor spaces; they grace our living rooms and kitchens, infusing a sense of organic luxury. Mixed woods, reminiscent of sprawling forests, now find a home in our bedrooms, creating warmth and character.

Greenery, once confined to gardens, introduces a breath of fresh air within our living spaces, promoting not just aesthetic appeal but also a connection with nature. The industrial charm, once associated with outdoor architecture, now defines chic urban interiors, embracing the raw beauty of exposed materials. Molding, a hallmark of exterior detailing, now adorns our interiors, adding sophistication and depth.

Natural tones and colors, inspired by earth’s palette, dominate modern interiors, fostering a sense of tranquility and serenity. This convergence of exterior aesthetics with interior design reflects a desire to create harmonious spaces that reflect the beauty of the natural world within the confines of our homes. Join us on a journey where the boundaries between inside and outside blur, and the elements of nature become integral parts of our domestic landscapes.

natural stones

Embarking on a journey to bring the outdoors inside, the timeless allure of natural stone emerges as a focal point in contemporary interior design. Beyond its traditional outdoor role, natural stone, with its unique textures and hues, now graces our indoor living spaces, adding a touch of organic sophistication. Whether adorning countertops, accent walls, or flooring, the sheer versatility of natural stone introduces a tactile and visual richness that transcends conventional design boundaries. From the rugged charm of slate to the elegant veins of marble, each stone variety tells a story of earth’s artistry. Its cooling properties also make it a practical choice for spaces seeking thermal equilibrium. The integration of natural stone seamlessly connects our interiors with the tranquility and timelessness of the natural world, creating a harmonious sanctuary within the confines of our homes.

COOL TONES

Transform your indoor haven by embracing cool tones — serene blues, tranquil greens and soothing grays. These hues effortlessly evoke a sense of calm, making your living space a haven of relaxation. From accent walls to furnishings, incorporating cool tones adds a touch of sophistication and modernity. Elevate your interior ambiance with this refreshing color palette, creating a sanctuary that reflects tranquility and style.

bring the elements indoors

Bringing a firepit table indoors ingeniously merges the allure of outdoor living with the comfort of your indoor space. This innovative feature introduces a unique, cozy ambiance reminiscent of starry nights around a campfire. It becomes a focal point for social gatherings, offering the warmth and charm of an outdoor firepit with the convenience and safety of indoor settings.

Designed to be smokeless and suitable for indoor use, these tables enhance the room’s aesthetic while providing a novel entertainment element. They perfectly blend the rustic feel of outdoor adventures with the sophistication of modern living, creating an inviting, multifunctional space for relaxation and socializing.

SPRING 2024 253 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 19

green green green

Breathe life into your indoor spaces by embracing the invigorating presence of greenery. Beyond traditional outdoor realms, plants and foliage have become essential interior design elements, infusing homes with natural vitality. Whether it’s cascading vines, statement potted plants or a lush indoor garden, incorporating greenery adds a touch of biophilic beauty.

Not only do these living accents purify the air, but they also contribute to a sense of well-being and tranquility. The dynamic interplay of textures and shades of green creates visual interest, transforming your living space into a verdant oasis. Embrace the trend of biophilic design and let nature flourish indoors, fostering a connection to the outdoors within the comfort of your home

INDUSTRIAL

Infuse urban flair into your indoor living space by incorporating industrial elements. Exposed brick, steel and concrete bring raw, edgy charm, creating a contemporary ambiance. Utilize metal fixtures, pendant lights and reclaimed materials to amplify the industrial aesthetic. This design trend not only adds a touch of urban sophistication but also celebrates the beauty found in the unconventional, transforming your home into a stylish and eclectic haven.

Envelop your living space in the organic comfort of natural fibers. Woven baskets, jute rugs and textured accessories bring the essence of the outdoors inside, adding an earthy and tactile quality. These elements not only infuse warmth but also connect your home to the natural world. Choose natural fibers for a touch of relaxed elegance, creating an interior ambiance that mirrors the serenity and authenticity of nature.

Tailored Touches

As spring blooms, it’s prime time to revitalize your dream home with tailored touches. Start by envisioning your ideal space and consult with a reputable custom home builder to bring your vision to life. Enhance the season’s natural light by incorporating expansive windows and skylights for a bright, airy ambiance. Opt for energy-efficient features like insulated windows and smart thermostats to enhance comfort and sustainability. Consider outdoor living spaces such as decks or covered porches with optional heat to savor the outdoor beauty and extend the season. With meticulous planning and expert craftsmanship, embrace the spirit of spring as you embark on creating your family’s sanctuary.

molding

Elevate your indoor living space by introducing the timeless elegance of molding, a hallmark of exterior detailing. Traditionally an outdoor architectural feature, molding seamlessly transitions into interior design, adding sophistication and character. Crown molding can redefine ceilings, while baseboards and wainscoting contribute depth and texture to walls. The intricate patterns and classic designs of molding evoke a sense of craftsmanship and refinement, transforming your home into a haven of architectural distinction. This interior design trend embraces the marriage of exterior aesthetics with indoor elegance, creating spaces that are both visually captivating and enduringly stylish.

living walls

Living walls, adorned with lush vegetation, effortlessly blur the line between interior and exterior spaces, infusing homes with a breath of natural vitality. These vertical gardens not only serve as striking visual features but also contribute to improved indoor air quality by filtering pollutants. The presence of living walls transforms interiors into vibrant, organic sanctuaries, offering a constant reminder of nature’s rejuvenating influence. As greenery thrives on the walls, residents enjoy a connection to the outdoors, creating a harmonious and refreshing ambiance within the confines of their home.

Craft an environment that exudes both timeless elegance and contemporary flair.

MIXED WOODS

Transform your indoor sanctuary with the rich allure of mixed woods, a design trend that beautifully marries various wood tones and textures. Gone are the days of uniformity — today’s interiors embrace diversity, blending light and dark woods to create a harmonious tapestry of warmth and sophistication. Whether in furniture, flooring or accents, the juxtaposition of oak, walnut and maple infuses spaces with organic charm. This eclectic approach not only adds visual interest but also reflects a connection to nature’s diversity. Embrace the depth and character inherent in mixed woods, crafting an environment that exudes both timeless elegance and contemporary flair. The result is an indoor living space that encapsulates the beauty and complexity of the natural world.

terracotta elements

Infuse your living space with the earthy allure of terracotta elements. Whether in the form of pots, tiles or accessories, these warm-hued additions not only introduce a touch of rustic elegance but also foster a seamless connection with outdoor landscapes. The distinctive reddish-brown tones evoke the warmth of sun-drenched landscapes, creating an ambiance that is both inviting and timeless. Terracotta pots housing vibrant greenery bring nature indoors, while tiles add character to floors and walls. Embrace this versatile material to sculpt an interior that mirrors the soothing embrace of the natural world, enveloping your home in a palette inspired by the rich tapestry of the great outdoors.

floor-to-ceiling windows

Floor-to-ceiling windows serve as transformative portals that seamlessly integrate the natural world with interior spaces. By ushering in abundant natural light and panoramic views, these expansive windows dissolve the boundaries between indoor and outdoor environments. The transparency of floor-to-ceiling windows creates a visual continuity, allowing inhabitants to revel in the ever-changing beauty of nature throughout the day. The interplay of sunlight, shadows and the surrounding landscape becomes an intrinsic part of the interior ambiance.

Moreover, these windows enhance the sense of spaciousness, making rooms feel larger and more interconnected. Beyond aesthetics, the incorporation of floor-to-ceiling windows promotes a connection to the outdoors, fostering a serene atmosphere that positively influences well-being and enriches the living experience.

Effortlessly Transform Your Home with New Flooring

Start by selecting a durable material like luxury vinyl plank for high-traffic areas or cozy carpets for bedrooms. Lighter hues can make spaces feel larger, while darker tones add warmth and depth. Opt for easy-to-clean options like laminate or tile in kitchens and bathrooms. Consider eco-friendly choices such as hardwood or wool for a sustainable touch. Take the guesswork out of your project by pairing with a professional to measure accurately and account for the finer details. Finally, a trained and licensed installer will ensure your floor performs for life and leave your home with a flawless finish. Elevate your space with stylish flooring updates that enhance both beauty and functionality.

Update your indoor haven with the inviting embrace of warm tones — rich reds, golden yellows and earthy oranges. These hues infuse your living space with a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, creating a sanctuary of comfort. From accent walls to furnishings, the incorporation of warm tones brings a touch of timeless elegance and a sense of homely charm. Elevate your interior ambiance with this comforting color palette, crafting a space that radiates both style and serenity.

“Iwouldn’t say that I’m anyone special,” says Farrah Scott, Gig Harbor resident and CEO of Trapper’s Sushi Co. “I don’t mean to say that I haven’t worked hard, but I am where I am today because I’ve had amazing support.”

Farrah Scott may be ordinary, but her story is anything but. Just 11 years ago, Farrah was a server for Trapper’s Sushi Co., but today, as CEO of the company, she shares the vision for the company with Trapper himself.

Her story begins humbly. Before working for Trapper’s Sushi, Farrah was 21 and working odd jobs typical for a young person

trying to make a living. She had graduated high school but didn’t have her sights on college. When she started work at Trapper’s Sushi it was her first serving position, a position in which she excelled. A few years later, Farrah was promoted to assistant manager in the Bremerton restaurant. Then soon after, in 2015, she was promoted to general manager. While managing in Bremerton she was responsible for training her assistant manager and noticed that there weren’t a lot of systems in place for management training. So, she created and initiated a system that did so, helping her location and its employees to thrive.

The management training that she initiated was such a success that Farrah was asked to bring the same program to eight other

locations. In 2016, this made her the director of Management Training and Development. In this position she ensured all the locations were running smoothly. If any one location lacked in any one thing, she put in systems that allowed for additional training and smooth transitions —including that of management training.

Shortly thereafter she was promoted to COO. “I guess Trapper saw something in me,” says Farrah. With her gift for organization, innovation, system integration and leadership by example, it’s easy to see exactly what he saw in her. Farrah is a good leader, and she knows how to make things run smoothly.

Farrah credits her success greatly in part to a company culture that has offered her opportunity to learn and grow, with a system of support that has recognized excellence in her, and others. The purpose of Trapper’s Sushi Co. is “to provide ordinary people with extraordinary opportunity.” Farrah does that by partnering with Trapper to bring about growth within the company but also by spearheading an accelerated leadership program called the Wingfield Program. Those people within the company who are interested in moving up in Trapper’s management enroll in the program. If leadership opportunities become available, the company has a pool of trained leaders to pull from without having to reach outside their community of excellent employees.

Farrah is a great leader because of her capacity to train and build others up, others who are already exhibiting excellence within their sphere — creating an even stronger company.

Farrah was promoted and officially began her role as CEO in January 2024. Farrah Scott’s journey, from server to CEO, is truly an inspiring story. She is a testament that anything is possible with hard work and determination.

Providing wraparound support to families

The Multicultural Child and Family Hope Center (MCFHC) is a local nonprofit whose mission it is to educate, empower and uplift our children, youth and community to increase access to opportunity. “Having access to mental health resources, family support, therapy support, etc., MCFHC has endless resources for almost everyone in my family. Knowing I have that support at the tip of my fingers has been the biggest blessing. For myself, I have been battling so much to the point that I literally lost myself, forgot who I was, in a fog most days. Once I felt comfortable talking about some things and learned to listen and learn about so many great things MCFHC has, it was a bit easier to come forth and accept the help that is there,” shares one parent who has a school-age child and toddler who attend MCFHC.

This is a mission that uplifts us all by strengthening our most vulnerable community members and families to thrive. The Multicultural Child and Family Hope Center does this by providing a full set of wraparound services to our community.

Wraparound services are divided into three different, but intertwined, approaches: childcare, service, and resources. The first, childcare, provides

There is the Family Time parent-child visitation program for families in the Child Welfare System, valuing the need for children and parents to have positive interactions. The Parents 4 Parents program is a mentorship program where parents who were previously involved in the child welfare system work with parents currently involved to help them navigate the system, with the goal being one of reunification. The Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) is a parenting program that offers targeted interventions for parents of children from 0 through 16. The last service that MCFHC offers is one of Safe Care, which is a program that works with families of children of 0 through 5 who are at risk for child neglect or abuse to teach interaction, health care and home safety skills.

MCFHC also provides resources to those struggling with homelessness. The Homeless Prevention Project prevents homelessness among families of color through peer intervention and personal goal setting. The Mom and Women’s Support Group provides curriculum and resources to moms having experienced domestic violence or are at risk for homelessness. There is a Recovery Home, which is a sober living transitional housing for women and their children, promoting permanent housing. MCFHC has also partnered with the Palmer Pathways Pre-Apprenticeship Program to build a Tiny Home Village — transitional tiny home living for families until stable permanent housing is found.

Through childcare, services and resources, the Multicultural Child and Family Hope Center supports children, women and men from all different walks experience wholeness, wellness, stability and permanent housing. Currently MCFHC is in the process of a capital campaign for the support of the Cora Whitley Family Center.

“Our waitlist for babies and young children to enroll in Early Learning is over a year long,” notes Roxy Magno, director of Outreach Services. “MCFHC wants to serve as many children and families as possible, and our new building will increase our capacity by over 100 slots. In addition to increasing childcare access, it will also provide jobs to people in our community passionate about Early Learning, Teaching, and Social Services.”

Harmonizing Beauty and Health

CRAFTING REGIMENS THAT NOURISH INSIDE OUT

In the fast-paced world we find ourselves in, beauty regimens have become more than just a series of skin-care steps or makeup applications. Modern beauty enthusiasts are increasingly embracing a holistic approach that considers not only external appearance but also internal well-being. This paradigm shift toward beauty routines with health at their core is gaining momentum, and for good reason. Let’s delve into the intricacies of these beauty regimens, exploring how they can contribute to both physical allure and overall well-rounded health.

The Fusion of Beauty and Health: A New Paradigm

The days of beauty being solely skin-deep are long gone. Today’s beauty aficionados are recognizing the intimate connection between external radiance and internal vitality. Beauty regimens that incorporate health-conscious elements aim to create a synergy that enhances both aspects simultaneously.

Mindful Skin Care: Nourishing Your Skin’s Inner Glow

The foundation of any beauty routine is skin care, and the shift toward mindful skin care is transforming the industry. Embracing natural ingredients that not only address aesthetic concerns but also nourish the skin from within is becoming a norm. Antioxidant-rich serums, hydrating toners and botanical extracts are gaining popularity for their ability to promote skin health at a cellular level. This mindful approach not only ensures a radiant complexion but also supports the skin’s resilience and longevity.

Nutrient-Rich Diets: The Ultimate Beauty Elixir

True beauty emanates from the inside out, and the role of nutrition in maintaining a healthy appearance cannot be overstated. Beauty regimens that prioritize nutrient-rich diets are becoming increasingly prevalent. Foods rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are the building

blocks of a radiant complexion. From the collagen-boosting properties of vitamin C to the skin-loving benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, a wellrounded diet contributes significantly to the overall health of your skin, hair and nails.

Sustainable Beauty: A Trend with Environmental and Health Benefits

In the quest for beauty and wellness, the environment should not be forgotten. Sustainable beauty regimens are gaining traction, emphasizing eco-friendly products and practices. Choosing clean beauty products not only reduces your exposure to harmful chemicals but also contributes to a healthier planet. The symbiotic relationship between personal health and environmental well-being is a cornerstone of this evolving approach to beauty.

Exercise as a Beauty Ritual: Sculpting Your Body, Nourishing Your Skin

Exercise is a powerful tool that goes beyond sculpting the body. Regular physical activity promotes blood circulation, flushing toxins from the skin and imparting a natural, healthy glow. Additionally, exercise releases endorphins, the body’s natural mood enhancers, contributing to a positive mindset that radiates through your appearance. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a yoga session or a high-intensity workout, integrating exercise into your beauty regimen can be transformative.

Customization for Individual Beauty and Health Needs

One size does not fit all, especially when it comes to beauty and health. The evolving landscape of beauty regimens encourages customization based on individual needs and preferences. Tailoring your routine to address specific skin concerns, dietary requirements and lifestyle factors ensures a more personalized and effective approach. Consulting with skin-care professionals, nutritionists and wellness experts can help create a regimen that aligns with your unique beauty and health goals.

Your Face is Important

Switching to clean makeup offers a multitude of benefits for both your skin and the environment. Free from harmful chemicals and toxins, clean makeup reduces the risk of skin irritation and breakouts while promoting healthier, more radiant skin. Additionally, opting for clean beauty products supports sustainability efforts by minimizing the environmental impact of production and disposal. Embrace clean makeup for a more beautiful, healthier, and ecoconscious approach to cosmetics.

Make Your Own Salt Scrub

Making your own salt scrub is both simple and rewarding. Begin with a base of fine Himalayan pink salt or coarser sea salt for exfoliation. Then add a carrier oil such as coconut or almond to moisturize the skin.

Personalize your scrub with essential oils: lavender for soothing, citrus for invigoration. Optional additions like honey or ground coffee can further enhance the scrub’s benefits.

This DIY approach offers a natural, chemical-free skin-care option, tailored to your specific preferences and skin needs.

Spring Into Fashion

What’s trending this season

Pastel Power: Embrace soft hues like lavender, mint and blush, infusing spring wardrobes with a dreamy and romantic vibe.

Statement Sleeves: From puffy to ruffled, exaggerated sleeves add drama and flair to tops and dresses, elevating everyday looks.

Eco-Chic: Sustainable fashion takes center stage with eco-friendly materials, upcycled pieces and ethical practices driving stylish and conscious choices.

5 Mile Drive, which is only open to bikers and pedestrians. It is a scenic ride through an old-growth forest. Another option is to bike along the waterfront. After working up a sweat and turning in your bike, walk over to Ice Cream Social to enjoy some local handcrafted ice cream. Insider Tip: Try the Almond Poppy Seed ice cream. It was once a seasonal ice cream but was so popular it is now available every day.

Catch a movie at the Cinemark Point Ruston. The movie “Dune: Part 2” will be released March 1, 2024. It is based on Frank Herbert’s book, “Dune.” The Point Ruston area was once one of the most polluted EPA Superfund sites in the United States and it inspired Herbert’s book. After seeing the movie, walk over to Dune Peninsula Park to learn more about how this area was transformed. The park is named after “Dune” and is connected to Point Defiance Park by the Frank Herbert Trail.

Sunset over Commencement Bay is a must. Take the Waterwalk trail to the edge of the property for stunning views of the Port of Tacoma and Mount Rainier. A perfect end to the day.
