Arts Resource Fair to Provide Teachers with Tools for Providing Arts Education South Shore Arts will host an Arts Education Resource Fair at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster on August 10, 2011. The fair will be a showcase for elementary schoolteachers and administrators in Northwest Indiana and south suburban Chicago, as well as parents who homeschool their children, to learn about education opportunities provided by our local arts organizations. The fair will take place just prior to teachers’ start of the new academic year and will be provided at no cost to educators.
Arts Fair will highlight organizations’ enhancements to children’s education The day will begin at 10am with an opportunity to visit with arts organizations and learn about their education programs at vendor booths. Participating organizations include:
Books, Brushes and Bands for Education Chesterton Art Center Chicago Street Theatre Indiana Ballet Theatre LaPorte County Symphony Lubeznik Center for the Arts Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra South Shore Arts South Shore Dance Alliance Theatre at the Center Towle Theater Programs such as fieldtrips, in-school and after-school programs, summer programs and more are among the educational enhancements offered by these organizations. The fair will coincide with the South Shore Arts Chamber of Commerce Luncheon for artists and arts organizations where each attendee, including educators, has a chance to stand, introduce him or herself, announce current events and network. The luncheon will feature brief performances of music, theatre and dance presented by Region 1 arts providers beginning at 11:30. At 1:30, South Shore Arts will lead a three-hour handson workshop for teachers and parents in the gallery, which will feature a 9/11-tribute exhibit from Magnum Photos. A team of instructors will show participants how to meet Indiana standards for the visual arts with ideas and projects based on visual art basics. The first 100 participants to sign up will receive a copy of The Usborne Complete Book of Art Ideas and color-wheel posters to use in the classroom. A binder filled with informational printouts about media styles and fundamental art concepts, artists, important artwork through history, art from other cultures and practical lesson plans for projects and activities that will be given to help reinforce learning in all subjects, including language and math. Each individual will rotate through three workstations to create art project examples that they can use in the classroom. A colorful 16-page teacher handbook detailing the education opportunities of South Shore Arts and its grantees will be distributed at the fair.
As a Regional Arts Partner of the Indiana Arts Commission in Region 1, South Shore Arts offers opportunities for artistic growth to children, teachers, organizations and artists along the South Shore. One successful effort to that end is the South Shore Chamber of Commerce Luncheon. In partnership with other arts organizations, bi-monthly luncheon meetings provide a networking venue for sharing events and opportunities among organizations and artists. Another education success is a professional development program for teachers in East Chicago where art was just this year reestablished in their elementary schools after a hiatus of nearly two decades. Artists and art teachers work together to develop art lessons that meet Indiana State Standards in fine arts. This summer’s Arts Education Resource Fair will combine these two ideas to give educators and arts organizations a day of networking and art education support. South Shore Arts and its partners wish to expose educators to the many wonderful cultural opportunities in our region, engage the community in celebrating the arts, and encourage creativity in teaching. The South Shore Arts Educational Resource Fair is a giant step in accomplishing all three goals. Toot ’n Doodle is a program designed for second and third grade students and is conducted in partnership between the Northwest Indiana Symphony and South Shore Arts. Students from the VanderCook College of Music in Chicago introduce over 400 children to the four instrument families and give them a chance to “play” the musical instruments. South Shore Arts instructors assist students in completing a music-inspired art project.
SHOWCASING STUDENT EXCELLENCE SINCE 1974 For 37 years, South Shore Arts has presented The Tri-County Junior/Senior High School Art Exhibition, recognizing excellence in the artistic achievements of young people and the teachers who nurture within them an appreciation and awareness for beauty, creativity, and diversity of thought. The first high school exhibition for grades 9-12 was held in 1974 under the board presidency of Anne Beckman, but it was not until the 20th annual exhibition in 1995 that seventh- and eighth-graders began exhibiting alongside upperclassmen. Sixth graders were added to the exhibit in 2008. Every year, South Shore Arts awards between five and ten thousand dollars in scholarships and monetary prizes to participating artists, including the Berwanger Scholarship for a graduating high school senior planning to attend an accredited art school. Trophies are given for the best overall school display on both the junior and senior high school levels. Thanks to the generosity of many contributors, South Shore Arts is able to recognize student excellence, while also providing students with the funding to pursue art and art-related degrees at the university level. For its first 30 years, the exhibition was open to students in three counties, Lake and Porter in Indiana and south suburban Cook County in Illinois, hence the name Tri–County; however, beginning in 2007, the exhibit was expanded to include schools in LaPorte County as well. The juried exhibit features original artwork created by students in grades seven through twelve from public, private, homebased, and parochial schools. The jurying process begins in the schools, where teachers select the work and submit a list to be entered into the exhibit. They are then invited to install the students’

work in the gallery at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts. For the past several years, South Shore Arts has invited teachers and their guests to a special private preview reception prior to the annual Sunday afternoon awards ceremony. This new tradition has become a great place for teachers to network and share ideas with one another. Through the years, the number of students participating has increased to such an extent that South Shore Arts’ 5,000-square-foot gallery has almost become too small to accommodate them all. The result is an explosion of creativity that captivates viewers of all ages! The exhibit is one of the most popular at South Shore Arts, and South Shore Arts looks forward to keeping this crowd-pleasing favorite around for many years to come! The 37th Annual Tri-County Jr/Sr High School Art Exhibition will run April 10–May 22, 2011, with an awards reception on Sunday, April 17, from 1–3pm. WE ARE THE SHIP FAMILY DAY South Shore Arts hosted a free Family Day during We are the Ship, The Story of Negro League Baseball in November. The event was sponsored by McDonald’s with Ronald McDonald and Rusty the RailCat on hand to entertain the families, while South Shore Arts instructors led children in art-making activities related to the exhibit. Kids were able to design their own sports cards by drawing a picture
of themselves on the front and writing their “stats” on the back. Giveaways included a copy of the book We Are the Ship, a signed print of one of the paintings in the exhibit, a set of Negro League Baseball Commemorative stamps created by Kadir Nelson and coupons for McDonald’s Happy Meals.

MEET THESE SOUTH SHORE ARTS BOARD MEMBERS Andy Arnold has served on the South Shore Arts Board of Directors since 2008. Andy previously served for four years on the Northwest Indiana Symphony board before the Symphony and South Shore Arts entered into a management agreement with governance provided by the South Shore Arts board. Andy joined the South Shore Arts board to help facilitate that transition and to assist in symphony fundraising and awareness in the community. Andy grew up in Lombard, Illinois, and is owner and President of Precision Control Systems in Griffith. He graduated from Brown University with a degree in engineering. Andy is an avid Blackhawks and White Sox fan. He also enjoys golf. He is currently involved with the Crisis Center in Gary where he serves as board vice president. Andy and his wife Sue live in Chesterton. Sue is the Business Manager of Waygood Productions/Switchback and is a Master Gardener in Porter County. Dr. Michael Luongo also joined the South Shore Arts Board in 2008, having served on the Symphony board prior to that time. Michael currently heads the Symphony Committee for South Shore Arts, providing artistic feedback and direction to the staff and board of directors. Michael was born in Brooklyn, New York, and received his undergraduate degree at City College of New York. He is an M.D., specializing in pediatrics with a practice in Munster. He serves on numerous medical boards. No stranger to the arts and community involvement, Mike and his wife Maureen enjoy supporting and attending exhibitions, theatre, and musical performances. They are involved in the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University, Memorial Opera House, Lyric Opera, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Art Institute of Chicago. They also love to travel. Mike joined the South Shore Arts board to advance and support music and arts education, performances and exhibits. He and Maureen live in Valparaiso and have two children, Vincent who lives in Chicago, and Marie, who lives in New York City.

Cherie Rippey represents ArcelorMittal and has served on the South Shore Arts Board of Directors since 2007. She is currently serving on the executive committee as VP of Administration. Cherie was born in New Orleans, and graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in marketing/business. She works for Procter & Gamble as a District Manager, Professional Oral Health North America, and is a William Procter Sales Master, a global award she received in September of 2010. Cherie is dedicated to arts education and joined the South Shore Arts board to help further those opportunities for kids in the Northwest Indiana and south suburban Chicago communities. She has served as the PTO Board Chair at St. Thomas Moore, and as member and past president of the Marian Catholic Advisory Board. Cherie enjoys golf, reading, travel and fundraising. She and her husband Mike, who is the President and CEO of ArcelorMittal, live in Dyer. They have two children, Megan and Kevin. Denise Comer Dillard joined the South Shore Arts Board of Directors in 2007. Denise is VP of Government/External Affairs for Methodist Hospitals, where she brings a strong background in economics, public policy and program development to her position. Denise has been active in the community to help provide youth with an exposure to visual and performing arts. She graduated from Howard University with a degree in Economics and Political Science and received her Masters in Public Administration. Denise has been involved in the Gary Chamber of Commerce, Campagna Academy, March of Dimes, Region Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Initiative, Boys and Girls Club, Workforce Development Services Inc. and the Gary Rotary. In her spare time, she enjoys attending theatre and travelling, especially to cultural institutions abroad. Denise and her husband Major, who is self-employed, live in Gary. They have two children, Lorenzo and Erin, and a grandchild, Jayden.

Why the Arts and Culture Are Important in Indiana—A Message from the Indiana Coalition for the Arts As the Indiana General Assembly enters into a new budgeting session, the Indiana Coalition for the Arts reminds citizens of why the arts are important to our lives and worthy of public support. • The arts define a sense of place and identity for communities across our state. • The arts promote understanding and an open exchange of ideas and values. • The arts attract new business and talented professionals to the state. • The arts draw visitors, which generate tax revenue and jobs. • The arts make a community more livable. • The arts help improve grades and student attendance. • The arts break down racial stereotypes, religious barriers and socio-economic prejudices. We are in a recession. Aren’t the arts expendable? Every program and department in the public system must share in the burden created by the recession. However, each program should also be judged on its ability to help our economy in the recovery, both short and long term. The arts have many benefits, tangible and intangible, that must not be overlooked.
The arts must be accessible in a community, especially during a recession when workers are being challenged to learn new skills and perhaps move to other parts of the state to find meaningful and gainful employment. The arts—and arts education—must be integrated into all aspects of community life. Arts education, whether in a school setting or through community programs and partnerships, is one means to achieving this accessibility. Without a strong emphasis on arts and culture, thousands of future residents will suffer the repercussions for a generation. In North Carolina, a new Arts Education Task Force Legislation passed unanimously. On the last day of June, Gov. Beverly Perdue signed the 2010–2011 state budget into law. In the current economy, the expectation for arts funding would be ordinarily low. However, anyone following the recent advocacy for arts education would know that Gov. Perdue’s cabinet made creative growth a top priority for the state government. Arts North Carolina’s project, Senate Bill 66, unanimously passed in the state senate. The bill requires a task force to create a plan for arts education in North Carolina public schools, starting in kindergarten and requiring arts classes for high school graduation. Classes are 10 weeks unless otherwise noted. South Shore Arts is pleased to offer quality art classes at three locations in a wide variety of disciplines and media. Classes are available for ages 2 through adult. The gifted instructors at South Shore Arts are primarily working artists with degrees in their respective fields. In addition to the many classes offered at its headquarters in Munster’s Center for Visual and Performing Arts––including drawing, painting, pottery, colored pencil, cartooning, Photoshop Elements, photography––South Shore Arts maintains two branch locations. Substation No. 9 in downtown Hammond offers classes in drawing, airbrushing, painting, Photoshop, and a senior art workshop. South Shore Arts’ Crown Point location on the historic courthouse square offers pottery, manga, painting, drawing and a senior art workshop, among others.
