exhibitions This winter, South Shore Arts has transformed the gallery at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts into a comic reading experience with A Story Like Mine, an exhibition of contemporary comic art and literature featuring works by Breena Nuñez, Carta Monir, Gabe Garcia, Jorge Garza, Lawrence Lindell, Nate Powell and Whit Taylor. These comics creators have an extensive history of distributing their work via independent presses or through selfpublishing, and their work reflects the complex and ephemeral nature of biased systems that continue to work against marginalized groups In addition to original work—finished pages, character studies, sketchbooks, typed manuscripts, etc.—the gallery is

Jorge Garza, Cover from Tetlacatl #1, Digital

dominated by large-scale reproductions of pages from their comics. Some of the reproduced pages measure nearly eight feet in height, such as pages from Northwest Indiana comic artist Jorge Garza’s Tetlacatl, a comic inspired by Aztec culture featuring a stone robot battling colossal monsters. In the case of Stealth Mechanic by Carta Monir, the comic, originally published as a webcomic, has been printed in its entirety and is displayed on the gallery floor so that viewers can read it while moving through the gallery space. The emphasis on the reproduced page is a key element of the exhibition, according to co-curators Gabe Garcia and Micah Bornstein. The two felt that including original work was important as it serves to show the process behind how comics are made, but they didn’t want the original art to take on greater importance than the printed page. With comics the original art is only a means to an end. Comics are intended to be reasonably accessible and easily disseminated in their finished form. For the co-curators, that’s why comics are so powerful. The comics by the artists featured in the exhibition, combined with the comics selected in the exhibition reading area, tell stories rooted in a diversity of lived experience. The result is a powerful collection of stories from some of the most engaging contemporary comics creators working today. A Story Like Mine will run from November 15, 2021, to March 5, 2022. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, December 17, 2021, from 6-9pm with a panel discussion featuring the artists and co-curators from 5-6pm. The exhibit is documented through the publication of an exhibition catalog featuring an essay by Howard Rambsy II, professor of literature at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he teaches courses on African American literary art and comic books. He is the author of Bad Men: Creative Touchstones of Black Writers. Contemporary comics are created for a broad range of audiences and ages, and A Story Like Mine is an exhibition of contemporary comic work. As such, it is important to note that the content of the work in this exhibition deals with mature subject matter about race, immigration, mental health, gender and sexuality. The exhibition is made possible in part by a Project Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, with lead corporate support from Peoples Bank, media sponsorship from The Times Media Company and additional support from Dyer Construction Company.

exhibitions South Shore Arts presented the 78th Annual Salon Show, September 13 through November 6, 2021, in recognition of artist members of South Shore Arts, as well as artists of Indiana and Cook County, Illinois. Over 300 works were entered with 38 artists and 55 works selected for the exhibit. This year’s juror, Tom Torluemke, is an Indianabased, contemporary American artist whose practice spans over 40 years and includes painting, drawing, sculpture, and installations in various mediums. He is known for his powerful, no-holds-barred approach to subject matter relating to socio-political, ethical, and humanistic themes. Awards were presented in a live ceremony on Sunday, October 3. In addition to the $2,000 Helen V. Surovek Memorial Award endowed by the Surovek family and the $1,500 Renee & Sam Denmark Memorial Award donated by Tracy & Marc Schwimmer, a new $1,500 award was established this year as the first ever given by a gay married couple. Bruce Cegur and Chris Pohl donated $30,000 for the creation of this annual award, donating an additional $1,500 to fund it in its inaugural year. In establishing their award, Cegur and Pohl asked that the winning work reflect the princiles of IDEA: inclusion, diversity, equity and access—as well as positivity and fun. We are grateful to the many donors who helped to make this year’s purse of prize money a record $12,000!

y t i h t v a e i e t r a a W e n r d C d l Cionter Mini-Sessions Are Someth W

This winter, artists of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in three new, in-person visual arts mini-sessions. Classes of shorter duration allow our instructors to provide variety of creative topics, which are perfect for those unable to make a commitment to a nine-week class. Our spacious studios at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts in Munster give artists plenty of space to safely practice a variety of art techniques. Mini-sessions will appeal to those who enjoy the satisfying experience and aspects of a fine art make-and-take. While people are continuing to be selective about their activities due to COVID, South Shore Arts staff and instructors are continuing to provide safe visual arts experiences. Valid proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required for students ages 5 and up to participate in our socially-distanced classes. In order to maintain the safest in-person experiences, South Shore Arts is still limiting class numbers with spaced seating, while also providing all materials for workshops kit-style. This February, adult artists are invited to participate in a one-day workshop that speaks to the romantic in us all. Adults can spend quality time with a loved one with our Valentine’s Day Card & Printmaking Workshop. During this two-hour workshop for adults ages 18 and up, graphic artist Jenn Maguire will lead participants in learning a variety of printmaking techniques and cardmaking methods to construct a set of custom Valentines with envelopes. All materials are provided, including a sweet treat. Yes and of course, there will be doilies! For teens who love plushies and quirky, cuddly Kawaiithemed toys, instructor Fawn Syzmoniak gives artists ages 10-17 an opportunity to learn how to hand-sew, pattern draft, and come out feeling like they can tackle the most kawaii plush of them all! This three-part mini-session will take place on three Saturday afternoons in February and will provide students with a variety of templates and textures from which to choose. Artists are guaranteed to leave with the cutest one-of-a-kind plush softie. In March, teen artists ages 13-17 will be inspired by Surrealist artist Rene Magritte while practicing their lifedrawing skills. Instructor Emily Casella will provide students with an opportunity to add to their creative portfolio by drawing a fully clothed model, who will be posed within a surrealistic tablescape. The Surrealist still-life will include natural and found objects to stoke the imagination and encourage artists to focus on the art elements within the fanciful and curated scene. Students will practice drawing contour lines and defining shapes, and explore methods for creating depth within space.

ing for Everyone

Art in Focus Goes Live & Virtual Art in Focus, founded in 1996 by retired educator Rita M. Ray for adult learners of all ages, will resume this January with a mixture of virtual webinars and in-person presentations at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts, providing insight into the work of artists and the multitude of artistic forms through which they create. Beginning on Monday, January 10, Art in Focus will return live in Munster with a presentation about the history of children’s book illustration. Attendees will learn about the diverse and rich history of children’s literature and be encouraged to think about how cross-culturally stories for children pass from one generation to the next. Examples of current and vintage children’s books will be on display and participants will be invited to talk about what books were important to them during their childhood and why. On Monday, February 7, the subject will shift to historian, educator, and artist David Driskell, who passed away in 2020. Examples of his multi-media artwork will be presented and his heartfelt mission of emphasizing importance of discussing and curating African art will be the focus of this very important lecture in celebration of Black History Month.

Balancing out the winter season, Art in Focus will feature topics such as 1:12 scale miniatures with HGTV’s “Biggest, Little Christmas Showdown” participant and bigwig in the mini-scene Darren Scala of D. Thomas Fine Miniatures, as well as a guest lecture with Micah Bornstein, co-curator of the exhibit, A Story Like Mine, currently on view at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts. On Monday, February 21, fans and supporters of the Northwest Indiana Symphony will enjoy the return of guest lecturer Maestro Kirk Muspratt, who will discuss the Symphony’s upcoming “Rach and Blue” program with a focus on Gershwin and his musical masterpiece Rhapsody in Blue. The core objective when developing any of our programs and classes at South Shore Arts is that we meet our student’s need of experiencing the cultural similarities that unite us by providing quality content that is accessible to all. Learning about others, embracing our differences and similarities, and connecting through our relationship with the humanities is how we will continue to thrive creatively. An important aspect of Art in Focus is the thoughtful dialogue between the program facilitator, the guest speakers, and the attendees to broaden views of the arts and individuals in our world. Thanks to generous support from Community Healthcare System, Art in Focus is free and open to the public. For more information on our upcoming Art in Focus presentations, please visit the South Shore Arts website at www.SouthShoreArtsOnline.org.

South Shore Arts celebrated Carnivale!, a late summer, in-person fundraising event, on Friday evening, August 27, 2021, at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts. Thanks to many generous supporters like you, Carnivale! was a huge success, exceeding our budgeted expectations and raising just over $109,000. Congratulations and sincere thanks to our co-Chairs, Dr. Rebecca Galante, Amy Koufos, Corey Hecht and Jenny Yalowitz, along with our charitable and connected attendees, board members, committee, community, and staff for making this event such a significant accomplishment. Carnivale! helped to make up for the funding that we lost by not being able to hold a traditional Beaux Art Ball again this past spring. It was an inside, outside, fun, casual dress, great food, drinks, and live-music-withdancing party. The Carnivale! summer party was the primary fundraiser

Director of Development & Marketing Tricia Hernandez was honored as the Carnivale’s “Queen for a Day” in celebration of her 16 years as South Shore Arts. Tricia retired at the end of September.

benefitting our everykid art education program, which focuses on acceptance, diversity, self-esteem, community pride and involvement through arts education. The auction for this event also exceeded expectations by raising over $26,000. We used an online platform to put the auction items up for bid two weeks prior to the date of the event and had raised over $10,000 before the doors opened on August 27. These funds were critical to fill a financial gap created by having to forego—for the second consecutive year—our traditional Ball in June, which typically nets $175,000. The Beaux Arts Ball is South Shore Arts’ primary fundraiser with proceeds benefitting our everykid

art education programs. The Ball’s success allows South Shore Arts to provide yearly programs for little or no cost to thousands of children, youth and families in Northwest Indiana and south suburban Chicago. The evening’s musical entertainment, The unPROFESSIONALS, featured two of our very own board members, Jeremy Willett and Gus Galante, who had the crowd on their feet dancing the night away. Centerpieces consisting of beautiful lit balloon bouquets were designed by Twisty Designs Balloons and sponsored by Amy & Michael Koufos. Major sponsors of CARNIVALE! were BMO Harris Bank, BP, Community Healthcare System, Lexus of Merrillville, Mortar Net

Solutions and NIPSCO. Printing was donated by Largus Graphix Solutions and the invitation and other graphic designs were donated by Judith Mayer Creative. Our traditional Beaux Arts Ball will return next year on Friday, June 3, 2022, when we promise another delightful evening in support of arts education! Please mark your calendars.

state of the arts Arts Commission Seeks Applications from Artists for a Business Training Workshop and Fellowship The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) is now accepting applications for the On-Ramp Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator Program, a program for artists and creative entrepreneurs seeking training and resources to help establish or support an arts-based business in Indiana. Designed by Elaine Grogan Luttrull of Minerva Financial Arts, the program focuses on ten key business concepts for a successful portfolio career, including defining value, business structure, identifying and marketing to customers, pricing strategy, marketing strategy, managing expenses and generating revenue, taxes, and planning. The On-Ramp Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator is comprised of a three-day in-person intensive entrepreneurship and community engagement workshop and up to $2,000 in fellowship funding to put training into action through a career-advancing community-engaged project. The 2022 On-Ramp workshop will be May 11-13, 2022, in Noblesville, Indiana. Based on state and national survey results, On-Ramp alumni were more financially resilient compared to artists across the nation. On-Ramp program participants retained more of their savings during the pandemic and are managing and tracking expenses, identifying new allies and partners, and adjusting their business plans more effectively. “This is an ideal program for those Indiana artists and creative entrepreneurs who want to acquire business skills to fuel their creative practice in the State of Indiana,” said Paige Sharp, Indiana Arts Commission Deputy Director of Programs. The deadline to apply to participate is January 6, 2022, at 4:30 p.m. EST. Guidelines can be downloaded from the IAC website, www.in.gov/arts.

Miah Michaelsen Named IAC Executive Director The IAC has announced that Miah Michaelsen will serve as its next Executive Director. Michaelsen’s history with the IAC spans more than a decade, beginning as a Regional Arts Partner for the City of Bloomington and the Bloomington Area Arts Council. She has served as the agency’s deputy director of operations since 2016.

“We could not be more excited to welcome Miah as our next Executive Director,” said Alberta Barker, IAC chair. “Miah has a track record of innovation, a demonstrated history of leadership, and a deeply held commitment to the arts in our state.” Before joining the IAC, Michaelsen served as an assistant economic development director for the arts for the City of Bloomington, developing and implementing programs and services for the City’s state-designated cultural district. She was also Executive Director of the Bloomington Area Arts Council, the Children’s Hands-On Museum in Tuscaloosa, AL, and the Kentuck Art Center and Festival in Northport, AL. She has served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, Arts Midwest, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and Arts Council of Indianapolis. She is a graduate of Hendrix College with a BA with Distinction in Theatre. Photo by Godwin Chou Michaelsen replaces Lewis Ricci, who retired after 15 years of service as IAC Executive Director.
