Teen Arts Board: Anti-Racism Mural Project When the South Shore Arts Teen Arts Board was founded in 2019, the inaugural group of eight high school students came together to plan the activities of the first year in order to build this new program. In that visioning session, the Teens decided that they would like to try new art forms, such as a zine, participate in arts-related field experiences, connect with professional artists and arts managers, and create a mural together. The mural was the one activity that all members unanimously agreed on, but the group had not yet decided on the best theme and location for the project. So, they began participating in the other activities on their list, with the mural project always on the table for discussion. In May of 2020, the theme of the mural project suddenly became apparent. The murder of George Floyd had a huge impact on each member of the Teen Arts Board and their communities as a whole. The group decided that it was not okay to remain silent, that they must use their art to speak up for justice, and that the mural project would be the perfect platform for doing that. They decided that the mural would convey an antiracism message and that it would travel to be displayed in various locations throughout their communities. The group began researching other mural projects, learning about local mural artists, sketching, and discussing their ideas. Eventually, the Teens were granted funding from the Legacy Foundation that allowed them to begin their work. Artist Ish Muhammad was chosen to collaborate with the Teen Arts Board on the project. Ish began meeting with the group virtually to discuss the process of creating a mural and to brainstorm ideas for what they hoped to accomplish. Over the course of two months, the group worked together with Ish to sketch ideas and to bring those ideas together in a cohesive composition for their painting. Ish guided them through the process, offering advice from his many years of experience, while ensuring that the content of the mural was completely the voice of the Teens. The group participated in every phase of the project, from planning, to designing, preparing surfaces, detail painting, and sealing the finished work. Now that the mural is complete, it is scheduled to be displayed at high schools in Hammond, Lowell, Merrillville, and at Indiana University Northwest. The members of the Teen Arts Board have begun the work of talking with teachers and school administrators to find exhibition

space for this 8-foot by 16-foot work of art. Over the next year, the mural will be a traveling art piece, with the goal of displaying it in as many communities as possible, and eventually landing at a long-term home in Hammond. The display locations for the mural will be shared on South Shore Arts’ Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter feed. This project was made possible with generous support from the Legacy Foundation, an anonymous donor, and with the expertise of artist Ish Muhammad. The next cohort of the Teen Arts Board will begin in the fall with the new school year. For more information on displaying the Anti-Racism Mural Project or on joining the Teen Arts Board, visit www.southshoreartsonline.org/teenart-board or email Education@southshoreartsonline.org.

education

Virtual Art, Magic Trash! The 2020-2021 school year was a new adventure and a challenge for all students, teachers, and those that work with the schools. Despite the challenges, the Education Department at South Shore Arts remained part of it all with our everykid art and literacy program. Before the school year started, we were in communication with teachers and principals to find solutions for getting our art instructors into classrooms and continuing art and literacy programming with elementary students. The plans had many iterations as the situation changed many times, and all involved were flexible and creative, motivated to move forward into unknown territory. This collaborative planning resulted in South Shore Arts being able to provide virtual creative learning experiences for 3rd grade students in the Hammond elementary schools, thanks to generous support from Dyer Construction Company. Instruction in Hammond was 100% virtual until April 2021. South Shore Arts was able to use the funding provided to put together individual kits for each student, which contained a copy of the book, Magic Trash, and supplies necessary for a correlating art project. Elementary school teachers coordinated the distribution of these kits to their students. In April, students were allowed to return to the building, with about half of them choosing to do so, while the other half remained virtual. Teachers read and discussed the book with their students. Magic Trash is a true story about Detroit artist Tyree Guyton and the Heidelberg Project. The book offers strong themes of working together, the power of art, and the importance of inspiring community, especially kids, to affect action. Not only does the Heidelberg Project prove that when a community works together it can rebuild itself, but it also addresses the issues of recycling, environmentalism, and community activism on a global level. For our part, South Shore Arts moved forward with a virtual instruction plan, able to connect with some students

from their homes, and with the group of students who were in the classroom with their teacher, simultaneously. Whether at home or in the classroom, students were able to watch the art instructor’s demonstration, create their projects, and converse with the art instructor in real time. The project consisted of creating a home shape as a foundation to work from and utilizing the “clean trash” that students had collected to transform those shapes into works of art. The book and the art project were exciting and relevant for both the students and the teachers. As one Lew Wallace Elementary teacher stated, “I thought it was great on account of our circumstances this year.” The themes of social justice and community activism really resonated with the experiences of the past year. Although we all are looking forward to a day when we can learn and create as a group in person, the virtual art and literacy experience was a much-needed outlet for discussing big themes and for a creative outlet.

“My students really enjoyed the activity and the history behind it. They learned that art is all around them,” said another teacher from Maywood Elementary. “No student felt left out,” she continued. “Everyone’s art was shared and celebrated.” We are grateful to Scott Sowinski of the School City of Hammond for helping to coordinate and navigate the challenges of providing this program during a pandemic. We are so impressed by the Hammond 3rd grade elementary teachers and their dedication to quality learning experiences for their students. As always, we are amazed by the kids and their ability to tackle difficult topics, their open-mindedness, and their unbelievable energy and creativity.

Art in Focus Continues to Evolve Art in Focus is a long-standing program at South Shore Arts that was founded in 1996 by retired educator, Rita M. Ray. For most of the past 25 years, the program was an in-person activity with a presenting artist conversing live with an audience about his or her artistic practice or an exploration of the arts through film, lecture and thoughtful dialogue. In 2020, it became impossible to safely continue the program in person, so, the most recent season took place virtually with live interaction via Zoom Webinar and YouTube Live. The format change arose from necessity, but many unexpected benefits resulted. For instance, we were able to engage with a wider range of artists, some of whom came from disparate locations. We engaged with these artists, who would not otherwise have been able to participate. Presenting virtually also opened up the program to new audiences, and we were able to record and archive these sessions on our YouTube channel, which can now be viewed by any person at any time of day or night. We are eager to return to in-person events but also want to capitalize on our experiences over the past year. To that end, the 2021-22 season of Art in Focus will be a combination of in-person presentations and discussions on the second Monday of each month with virtual presentations on the fourth Monday of each month. Presenters will include

street artist Ish Muhammad, ceramicist Emily Casella, art educator Marcia Carson, and many more. An important aspect of Art in Focus is the thoughtful dialogue between the program facilitator, the guest speakers and the attendees to broaden views of the arts and individuals in our world. Art in Focus is for adult learners of all ages who are interested in the arts and their impact on the world. Thanks to generous support from Community Healthcare System, it is free and open to the public.

One benefit of this virtual format, which can be seen at SouthShoreArtsOnline.org, is that it will remain online to view, along with the entire exhibit, including the work of all 650 students and 21 schools (16 high schools and five middle schools), beyond the actual dates of the live exhibit. On behalf of the students, teachers, parents and families who were enriched by their participation in this year’s somewhat unconventional Tri-County exhibit, we say thank you for continuing to support this annual South Shore Arts event and for encouraging our region’s art students through your generous contribution. Without you, we couldn’t present this annual recognition of student talent and award over $8,000 in prizes and scholarships. We are truly grateful! APRIL 23– MAY 22, 2021

The Tri-County Junior/Senior High School Art Exhibit, always a favorite with our audiences, is usually a time for students, family members, friends and teachers to crowd into the gallery for the annual awards ceremony. For this year’s show, our 47th, we creatively persevered for the second consecutive year with some schools participating both live in the gallery and online, while others participated only online. This year’s winners, selected by artist Dawn Diamantopoulos, were announced in a somewhat modified online ceremony, without the excitement of everybody standing shoulder-to-shoulder, rooting for their favorite student artists.

Despite the closures and cutbacks of the past year, the Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra was able to fulfill its mission of educating young musicians in a professional symphony atmosphere, providing training by professional musicians, and giving opportunities to perform a wide variety of symphonic music. Throughout the year, musicians met in small groups, working with Maestro Philip Bauman and adult musicians from the Orchestra. Each six-week session ended with a filming day, and the performances remain available to view on YouTube. In March, the Youth Orchestra performed a virtual version of its annual Showcase Gala. Unable to gather for dinner and a concert, patrons were given the opportunity to donate directly to the Youth Orchestra, which thanks all those who contributed and helped make this event a success. The season culminated with a spring concert in which special guests were invited by graduating seniors and soloists. Family and friends enjoyed live performances by the full orchestra, a variety of small ensembles, and Concerto Competition winners. The 2021-22 season will continue to follow CDC guidelines to give musicians another year of opportunities. Plans for the year include concerts at Theatre at the Center and the return of the Showcase Gala. Information regarding dates and times can be found on the Symphony website.
