A Message from the Executive Director
Spring is the time of year when South Shore Arts celebrates students. The season finds us wrapping up this year’s everykid arts and literacy enrichment programs that South Shore Arts provides at no cost to almost 3,500 first, second, and third grade students in 139 classrooms across the Region. We are getting ready to celebrate and recognize over 500 student artists from almost 30 high schools and middle schools in our 49th Annual Tri-County Jr/Sr High School Art Show. The exhibit runs April 14 through May 14, 2023, in our main gallery with the award presentation on Sunday, May 7, as part of our returning Family Arts Fest (read more on page 12). We are getting ready to put the final wrap on this year’s Teen Arts Board’s work and celebrated the completion of this year’s cohort of the Hammond Arts Scholarship program on Sunday, March 18, with the students’ very own art show at Substation No. 9, the first public exhibit we have presented at our downtown Hammond branch since before the pandemic. The program is supported by the City of Hammond and allows 20+ fourth and fifth grade students, nominated by their art instructors, to participate in an enriching Saturday afternoon program of guided art instruction throughout the school year.
Standing in the gallery at Substation No. 9 that day, I realized that this coming June will mark the 25th anniversary of the opening of this branch location as part of our South Shore Arts outreach.
Through the generosity of NiSource, Inc., the City of Hammond and many other community supporters, an old out-of-date utility substation became a beacon of culture and art on June 6, 1998, in an important but transitioning Hammond neighborhood. While we can’t say that we predate all our neighbors, we like to believe we sparked an artistic reawakening downtown. Following the opening of Substation
No. 9, the Towle Theater—100 years after its original opening in downtown Hammond—was reborn under the leadership of Jeff Casey and Kevin Bellamy in 2003 and is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year as well. And the Towle re-opening was followed in 2008 by the reimaging of Mueller’s Hardware Store, originally built in 1903, into Paul Henry’s Art Gallery by fourth generation owner Dave Mueller. While COVID clearly impacted all of us, these institutions located within a block of each other and devoted to providing artistic opportunities in downtown Hammond have weathered the storm and are all celebrating important milestones this year.
The timing of these milestones is important as downtown Hammond looks forward to new life with the total redesign of Hohman Avenue to provide better pedestrian walkways, almost 100 new residential units currently under construction in the converted Bank Calumet building, and two additional planned apartment developments along Hohman Avenue that will bring an additional 263 residences to downtown Hammond over the next few years. Combine that with the expanded South Shore Double Track Rail service expected to begin operations in spring of 2024, the new downtown Hammond train station planned, as well as a $1 million exterior renovation to the local Strack & Van Til grocery store on Sibley, and this historic neighborhood is on a course for its expected resurgence.
We would like to believe that the arts helped pave the way over the last 25 years for this community revival. More importantly, we believe the arts will play a crucial role in providing many of the quality-of-life factors that will entice new residents to chose Northwest Indiana, chose Hammond and chose its renewed downtown. So if you haven’t checked out the downtown Hammond art scene lately, come catch a show at the Towle Theater, take in an acoustic open mic night or gallery exhibit at Paul Henry’s, and take an art class or two at Substation No. 9. Help us celebrate our artistic investments in this community over the last 25 years. Cheers!

This summer, South Shore Arts welcomes you to Animal House, a group exhibition of work by artists who examine various facets of the animal world curated by Dorman + Torluemke. The exhibition aims to inspire interest and illuminate details of the artists’ experience with animals as subject matter and raise awareness of the effects of man’s impact on the natural world.
Animals have appeared in art since the beginning of art history; frequently, they were used to help convey a story and represented as symbols of deeper allegorical meanings. Alongside each species’ unique beauty, we have learned much more about our animal friends: they are loving, intelligent, expressive, and playful. They are also industrious, lethal, powerful helpers, workers, congregants,
couples, and parents. Does that sound like anyone you know? This knowledge brings more dimension to animals as subject matter in art.
Animals bring joy to our lives as companions and members of our families living in our homes. Many live so we can eat. Even still today, animals work alongside us, doing the heavy lifting. The more we learn about animals, the more we learn about ourselves.
All animals keep the balance of things. Extinction sets off a chain reaction that upsets that balance causing weakness and death to other living things. As living creatures, we are all together in a co-dependent world ecosystem. We must do more than love our pets and eat and
admire the rest from afar; as stewards of the earth, we have the responsibility to make sure the world is in the condition to support life, all life.
Participating artists include Jason Brammer, Jno Cook, Laura Cutler, Victoria Fuller, Brandon Johnson, Kristina Knowski, Nathan Mason, Billy Pozzo, Jewlya Sturtevant, James Sutton and Tom Torluemke.
The artists join James Herriot, author of All Creatures Great and Small, in his observation, “If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans.”

Youth Orchestra Busy with Year-end Activities
The Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra’s final concert of the 2022–2023 season will be held on Sunday, May 7, 3pm, in the theater at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts, Munster, under the direction of Maestro Benjamin Nadel. Featured with the Youth Orchestra will be the 2023 Concerto Competition winner, flutist Dominick Travis, who began asking for a flute in 7th grade just before his family moved to Indiana from Texas.
Being a kid who had to leave behind his home, family and school brought Dominick much sympathy, and a $200 Costco flute showed up for Dominick’s 13th birthday. A couple of weeks later he was already attempting Flight of the Bumblebee. In Indiana, Dominick began studying with Cindy Fudala.
In the 9th grade, Dominick was playing in the Advanced Band and Orchestra at Chesterton High School. He is now homeschooled and sits as Principle in the Northwest Indiana Youth Symphony, also playing the flute and piccolo
Dominick Travisfor the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. He will be performing in the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra Rising Star Showcase, and will participate in the Indiana All State Band weekend at Purdue this year.
