South Shore Arts recognizes excellence in our students’ artistic achievements and the teachers who nurture within them an appreciation and awareness for beauty, creativity and diversity of thought. For 85 years, South Shore Arts, a nonprofit organization, has transformed lives along the South Shore through vision and leadership in the arts, including the everykid program, quality arts instruction for children and adults, and regional, national and international exhibitions. South Shore Arts partners with schools, social service agencies, and municipal parks and recreation departments on the everykid program, which provides visual art, music, drama and dance instruction to children and families at no charge to participants. As a Regional Arts Partner of the Indiana Arts Commission serving Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties, South Shore Arts provides grants, information and referral services, and technical assistance to artists and arts providers. South Shore Arts began in 1936 in the hat department of Minas Department Store in downtown Hammond, Indiana, with an annual exhibit of regional artists known today as the Salon Show. Located at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, Munster, since 1989, South Shore Arts opened Substation No. 9, a branch location in downtown Hammond, in 1998. South Shore Arts is funded by individual and corporate contributions, program underwriting, public and private grants, the Beaux Arts Ball, income-generating art classes, annual distributions from the South Shore Arts Endowment Fund and proceeds from the South Shore Arts Gift Shop.
